Manchester United’s mixed start to the Premier League season hasn’t been ideal, but things could look much rosier by the end of September.

United’s 2-1 victory over Leicester City on the opening day of the campaign was fully deserved, but their defensive frailties were laid bare during last week’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Tottenham Hotspur are next on the agenda on Monday live on Sky Sports and the game is the perfect opportunity to show the world that United are serious title contenders.

Spurs have started the season with victories over Newcastle United and Fulham, although they haven’t been overly impressive in either match.

The last three meetings at Old Trafford between these two sides have resulted in a 1-0 home victory and a repeat of that scoreline would set the Red Devils up nicely for what appears to be a favourable run of games during September.

Jose Mourinho’s side visit Burnley on Sunday, September 2, just three days after the Clarets face Olympiakos in the Europa League.

United have lost just one of their last 25 meetings with Burnley in all competitions and they can take advantage of any fatigue in the home ranks by picking up three points before the international break.

Mourinho will hope for a clean bill of health amongst his squad when they travel to face Watford on Saturday, September 15.

Goals by Ashley Young (2), Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard helped United to a 4-2 victory in the corresponding fixture last term and they went on to complete the double later in the season.

United have lost just once against the Hornets in their last 15 meetings and another three points look likely.

Games against Wolverhampton Wanderers (H) and West Ham United (A) over the next two weekends look excellent opportunities to record two more victories and put a different slant on their season.

Mourinho made it clear that he was unhappy with the club’s transfer business this summer and last week’s performance did little to improve his mood.

However, he has the ideal opportunity to get United firing over the next few weeks and put some pressure on the other title contenders.

With Man City also having a winnable run of fixtures during September, it’s hugely important that the club keeps pace at the top of the table over the coming weeks.
