If you’re unfamiliar with Studs Up Football Club, it’s an excellent football clothing line started by Chris Toy of Studs Up fame. They’ve got a great range of football t-shirts, polos, sweatshirts and more on the way all inspired by football culture. I’m delighted to say I’ve partnered up with SUFC to get all RoM readers 10% off their full range of gear until January 16th. Simply use code: ROMREADER at checkout.
If you’re deciding what to get, one shirt in particular grabbed me as perfect for United fans – the excellent Red “Greatest Team” shirt.
You hear it all around the country.
“And it’s *insert club name here*, *insert club name* FC, we’re by far the greatest team, the world has ever seen…”
It doesn’t matter if you’re nowhere near to being the greatest team the world has ever seen or whether the name of your team doesn’t even fit in to the song, you will sing it.
“And it’s Sun-der-lerernd Sun-derlerernd FC!” is one of my favourites, along with “And it’s Hull-ull City, Hull-ull City AFC”. Chelsea change their name to ‘super Chelsea’ to make it fit whilst Watford go as far as changing the song to “And it’s Watford FC, Watford FC are great.”
Then we have football clubs like Manchester United who are one of the few teams who can actually justify singing that song every week, and not just because our name has the correct number of syllables! From the Busby Babes to the Treble winners, from the first English club to win the European Cup in ’68 to our team of kids who would ‘never win anything’ that won the Double with Cantona in their first season. George Best, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton all were named the best player in Europe within the space of 5 years, beating the likes of Eusébio, Franz Beckenbauer, Ferenc Puskás and Johan Cruijff. Charlton insisted that Duncan Edwards was the best he’d ever seen though, one of our eight young lads who lost their lives before they’d hardly even started to set the world alight. Under Ferguson, we’ve won 11 titles in 18 years and since 1990 have never gone longer than just one season without a trophy, lead by the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.
Not arrogant, just better.
