PICTURE: Cantona Makes Bizarre Return To Football

Bizarrely, Eric Cantona has returned to football as director of ‘soccer’ at New York Cosmos.

“I am very honoured to join the legendary New York Cosmos,” said Cantona. “It’s a big project, a wonderful project. The Cosmos are very strong, beautifully made, with a great past. It’s kind of a mix between football and art. I will do everything I can to help us first find our way to regain the No. 1 position in the United States, and then for us to become one of the best clubs in the world.”

New York Cosmos formed in 1971 but dissolved in 1985, however the team’s youth camps continued to operate. The name was sold in 2009 to a new organization featuring Pelé as Honorary President, who revealed that the club would be back last year with the goal of joining the MLS.

Franz Beckenbauer, Pelé and Carlos Alberto Torres are amongst the famous names who have played for the club. Between 1977 and 1981 their average yearly attendance was between 34,000 and 48,00.

very strange, but i will be searching for ever press conference he gives. pure legend.

  2. Poppycock says:

    Eric the King!

  3. Dave Malaysia says:

I am glad. In the US. so we wont be playing against him, maybe a friendly in the summer.

Finally step up from beach football, lets see how he does .

This is interesting,if he does well ,possibilities for us in years to come.

  4. Mark says:

Off topic, but I read this in the Guardian this morning, can anyone explain what the off the field issues are and who else is involved?

Manchester United are holding top-level talks to determine whether Ravel Morrison has a future at Old Trafford because of off-field issues affecting one of the more promising young players to come through the club’s ranks since Sir Alex Ferguson’s “golden generation”.

Morrison, 17, made his debut for the first team in October, coming on as a substitute in the Carling Cup fourth-round tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The teenager is rated as one of the more naturally talented players to emerge from the youth academy since the breakthrough of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes but his career at Old Trafford is now in the balance.

Morrison, who turned professional on his 17th birthday last February and has represented England at Under-18, Under-17 and Under-16 level, has not been involved in United’s past two reserve fixtures. The club are considering all options for the left-sided attacker and a decision will be made in the next two weeks.

  5. Mark says:

@Paulj20. I was wondering that too.

  6. Dave Malaysia says:

Ravel Morrision was in a car with his mates ,got pulled over by the cops ,found a gun or more, plus drugs.

    Not his but ………

He returned to Manutd , eberything seemed to be working out ,then some rumor about witness intimidation in some case and his name comes up.

    And now all this news.

  7. paulj20 says:

No way, thats a disaster, have high hopes for that kid, hope it works itself out somehow..

  8. bchilds says:

The only thing that’s standing in Ravels way is his attitude and off field problems, we have the best manager in the world to help him though.

  9. Costas says:

Legenday New York Cosmos? Lol. Anyway, best of luck to the king.

  10. devilnani says:

Smells like utter crap from the guardian. This story has been running around for the past few days and is wildly blown up by twitter. Its true that he has missed a couple of matches and there may be trouble outside the field , but to say that his future is being reconsidered is purely rubbish. Sir alex mentioned him, pogba, keane and cofie in their bid for fa youth cup. It will be interesting to see if he will play against young hammers..

  11. Dave Malaysia says:

Yesterday some spurs fans ,a chelsea girl came into the blog with some interesting comments and insults.

Was good to see when the regulars came in with guns blazing, many packed it in,few stayed though.

    Few things for today:

    1) Danny Welbeck is having knee looked at in surgery.

    2) Sound from United Youth blog that another Norwegian Husain ,also midfeilder is heading back to norway. Eikrem has a buy back clause.

3)We are linked again to Michel Bastos, LB and LW. Hope Evra stays ,I beleive he will but maybe for backup.

4)Yesterday this chelsea chick gave some link with stats on chelsea pulling in the biggest crowds in thier USA tour. Not a problem for me but doesnt sound right ,sound like made up crap. werent they partying with paris hilton in clubs?

5)When we played dzeko at old trafford ,it was a out of form Rio/Vidic/Kuzs in the centre.
In germany It was Fletcher/Carrick/Kuzs. We won both games , they score once only in both.
So a fit ,in form defence would do better in my opinion to neutralise dzeko.
His statement on the fans ,the city staff must have educated him to say that. so its actually a pot shot from the club really ,and the player ma beleive it till he gets his dream move to Italy .

  12. Dave Malaysia says:

What do u guys think of Suarez moving to liverpool ?him and tores, we face them 6/3/11.

    Babel is leaving.

Bent with Agbonlahor ,dangerous. We face them 1/2/11.

Pinear at spurs over chelski. We dont play them again this season ,unless FA Cup.
    Hopefully they take out city.arsenal.chelski.liverpool.

  13. MyCowIsTheBest says:

@Dave Malaysia i think Bent and Agbonlahor can form deadly partnership.

Suarez is a good move for Liverpool.. well.. any decent player is a good move for them now LMAO

On Ravel Morrison story.. the lad seems to have a serious background problem. I guess this is more related to his personal life, if he cannot change himself first, there is nothing more we can do to help him. And the press are looking for any story related to us, because United-related news sells.

And on King Eric.. I am getting very excited.. I hope he will come back here one day.. And that New York Cosmos seems to have a rich history comparing to their young age (we are 100+..) , with several top names in football world related to them. I am really really excited by this..

  14. Dave Malaysia says:

@MyCowIsTheBest : Well we were linked to Suarez for a long time like Huntelear but nothing happened,if we did sign him someone will have to leave. If they do get him wud change things.

On Ravel ,he very good ,maybe a similiar player to Giggs, not sure if as good but the excitement suggests something special. But as always time will tell.

  15. smartalex says:

Good heavens! Cosmos may not be legendary, but they are universal. And Eric’s a star!
So can we stop looking for Eric now? I’m sure he’ll be well received in New York. Perhaps they will help draw US club football up a level or two, some cosmosis, perhaps. I hope they can hold on to him, cosmos don’t stick to a rolling tone.

  16. MG says:

The King is on holiday in New York

  17. smartalex says:

    Inspired by MG

    New York, New York.

Start spreading the news, I’m leaving today
I want to be a part of it – New York, New York
These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it – New York, New York.

I wanna wake up in a city, that doesn’t sleep
And find I’m KING of the hill – top of the heap
    New York, New York.

  18. bigphil2003 says:

Suarez to Liverpool is a great move. He’ll fit right in with that pack of cunts – just a pity we’ll have to see his rat face on MoTD every week.

  19. indiandevil says:

Guys check this out, nice balanced read on our unbeaten run :

  20. Justin10RvN says:

im REALLY excited about King Eric being involved with the cosmos, hopefully he can teach the American players some skills, instead of them all being engines with no horsepower(Analogies FTW) I might even go see a few matches

  21. hammons says:

Being an American, I am loving this…..

Something Cantona’s game never had was fear and/or leadership problems ….

First Fear Factor, Now Personality Problems

  22. sean says:

    don cantonio

  23. smartalex says:

“I tried to get out, but they pulled me back in”

  24. ahjs says:

Cosmos have probably had more global icons play for them than most clubs – Carlos Alberto, Neeskens, Pele and Beckenbauer for starters. Could this be a second merry-goround with Cantona there in the foreground? Sounds like a circus but a damn entertaining one.

  25. Utdforever says:

He’s looks pretty fuckin cool in that pic doesn’t he? Legend.

  26. Slabs says:

No lose situation for him really. If it goes wrong he simply bows out, if it goes right we could see him further his career in a bigger league…. ;)

  27. willierednut says:

Has anyone ever seem the film based on the New York cosmos? Once in a life time you call it lads. A must watch for any football fan. Anyways, good luck Eric. When ze seagulls……..

  28. willierednut says:

  29. ididnotzeeit says:

Looking like a serious badass in that pic. Could’ve been casted in Resevoir Dogs as Mr. Red ; )

    Fucking Legend.

  30. King Eric says:

willlie – No mate but a mate at work lent me it, just haven’t watched it yet. Is it decent?

  31. RedScot says:

Gotta love him he just courts controversy.
A mix between football and art…………..Fart, I smell shite !

“When the eagles follow the Staten Island ferry its because they smell the Hot Dogs”

The Seagull is ready to take off, this will be fun

  32. willierednut says:

King Eric – I liked It mate. Rodney Marsh makes a cameo in it as well. Some of the players they signed, were unbelievable.
