Alves: Perhaps My Time In Spain Is Over
Manchester United are seeking a long term replacement for Gary Neville after retaining the title again this year. Our captain has been injured all season, not making a single appearance in the league, so United will certainly be looking to strengthen the position.
Wes Brown signed a new contract, after several months of confusion, although it is likely United will be looking for a better player than him to hold the position permanently. Porto’s Jose Bosingwa looked to be the favourite, but after a surprise £16.2 million move to Chelsea, clearly our sights have been set elsewhere.
Is Daniel Alves the man we want?
The impressive full back, who is widely regarded as the best for the position, confessed earlier this season that he was looking for a move. “I want to leave Sevilla by the nearest exit,” he said. “I believe I deserve it. I don’t want to leave the club, to which I owe everything, on a bad note. I want to play for one of those clubs that can influence your career and your life, where you have to earn the interest of the manager and have a good income. I want to improve as a professional and as a person.”
Today, it appears as though those sentiments are still the same, with the 24-year old Brazilian possibly seeking a move away from the club.
“I am attending a meeting with the president to resolve the subject,” he said, “but perhaps my cycle has finished in Sevilla.”
Barcelona were the favourites to sign the Brazilian, however, after United knocked them out of the Champions League and they finished 3rd in La Liga, some 18 points behind Real Madrid, there is a chance his head could be turned to United.

Alves is very, very impressive. Dunga is an idiot not to choose him for Brazil ahead of Maicon. Alves is very much like Evra but drifts inside quite often as well as he is Sevilla’s best player and is involved with everything on the right side of the pitch. He’s very quick and skillful and can beat his man like a winger. The prospect of him and Ronaldo linking up is mouthwatering.
His reported 25 million price tag is huge, even for the best in his position. But if a less-known Bosingwa goes for 16 million, I guess that’s what you have to pay for in the market these days.
He is the right back equivalent to Evra. Strong, hard working, brilliant in defence and stunning in attack this guy has it all! He will be a perfect role model for the brasillian twins and will settle in nicely with the porutgese speaking contingent at the club.
QUE SERA, SERA
WHATEVER WILL BE, WILL BE
WE’RE GOING TO LUZHNIKI!
QUE SERA SERA
he is a perfect 2 for manchester,he would compliment ronaldo on the wings and also help the brazillians like anderson, rodrigo, and the silver twin, please man u buy alves for the sake of us(fans)
I’m a Sevilla sympathiser and yes, Alves is brilliant for the team. Just what we need for United and provides the attacking flair that we like. He’ll need to learn to defend more the way Evra’s learnt though.
Meanwhile, if get Alves instead, I’ll just laugh because Chelsea wanted him last season and even loaned Khalid Boulahrouz to Sevilla to try sweeten the deal, not that it’s been much good since the Cannibal hardly played. It’d be sweet revenge of a sort.
would love to see him at old trafford but seriously doubt that’s gonna happen . barca are in pole position for the deal .
however we could get sergio ramos - herad he wants to move, and he would be perfect for us
I was overjoyed to hear that Boswinga had signed for Chelski because it meant they weren’t going to pursue Alves who in is considerbaly superior player. This is the sort of right back that United need and the board should do everything in their power to secure his signature.
Technically brilliant with all the attacking flair associated with Brazilian wingbacks Alves can play anywhere on the right side. He is tailor made to fill in the right back slot and will be the perfect partner to Ronaldo or any of the other wingers United choose to deploy. He’s got a terrific cross on him and great work rate for a player who likes to get forward as much as he does.
With Evra on one side (Please Give the man a new contract !!!) and Alves on the other our team will provide the type of menace that will also us to play 4-5-1 without sacrificing United’s attacking style of play.
We simply must do everything we can to lure him to Old Trafford!!!
I think he would provide the perfect balance to our team in an attacking notion, he is obviously VERY impressive and at 24 you could get years out of him if you wanted. I didn’t really feel bothered about Bosingwa joining Chelsea because it was money over pride and if Alves WANTED to play for United more than our rivals it would be great.
I still think Wes has a lot to prove and with Neville coming back I would like to see a real battle for positions, a long term defence of Rio, Vida, Evra, Brown and Alves (what’s with all the V’s) we would get more out of our defense in attacking situations. Brown has done well and his runs forward and crossing is always improving but Gary Neville is top at that and with only a year or two left in him he may grow off the pace… hopefully he ends up like Cafu.
I agree with TomF - this guiy would provide a right-sided equivalent to Patrice Evra.
It’s always seemed to me that the value of the overlapping fullback is under-rated. Wesley is a terrific, hard-as-nails defender but his offensive prowess is, well, under-developed.
Obviously, having a pair like Evra/Alves would give UTD tremendous attacking flair and would also be a boon defensively since it would keep the opposition on its back foot.
If the massive infusion of ca$h from the television contract and the CL final comes true then the money is available to keep the gravy train rolling with exceptional additions like Alves - and Karim Benzema.
Bugger the cost, the money is there to be won !
I have three names in my head - Lahm, Alves and Micah Richards(yes yes he’s from the blue side of Manchester but if Sven leaves, he might also contemplate leaving City).
I have this feeling that Pique will probably leave us this summer. Every time a central defender is injured, Fergie would bring in Brown rather than play Pique.
Rossi left us for similar reasons and I wouldn’t be surprised if Pique also does that
