Coley, what a legend. I was still living up in Gateshead when we signed him, the barcodes up there worshiped him, they were devastated when he left. I had to keep my head down for a few weeks, think any United fan would have been lynched at that point in time!
But after his first season I was taking a load of stick from my pals, Cole hadn't looked good at all, only managed about 13 goals in his first full season if I recall correctly, less than a young, mainly substitute Paul Scholes, and Gillespie had had a storming debut season on Tyneside. How they loved to rip the piss out of the 'flop', laughing at how they'd done us and sold us a one season wonder. Well he certainly came good didn't he? Second highest prem scorer ever, despite never taking penalties, unlike Shearer, Fowler, Henry, Ferdinand, Le Tessier, pretty much all the top scorers actually. Think how many more goals he could have scored if he'd 1. Taken penalties, and 2. Stayed at United an extra couple of seasons instead of joining shitty Blackburn, Fulham, and City. If only Fergie hadn't signed fucking Veron and stuck to a 4-4-2 with RVN and Cole alongside each other.

Giles - Cannot wait for "Hitting the fan with United - Part II".

That Giggsy effort from the half way line was 00/01 season I think. " He was superb that day.

Cantona7, my memory is actually very imperfect and patchy. There are all sorts of odd things I remember about some games, including the weather, but others are a complete blank. I can recall some games from 1960 better than ones from 2000, but others have left no trace. Likewise with more recent ones, some I remember with as much pleasure as any from long ago whereas very little sticks with others. Sometimes I have absolutely vivid memories of goals, but I struggle to work out which season it took place (For example the other day I was thinking about a shot of Giggsy's from over the halfway line against Charlton, much like Becks' classic, only this one hit the bar and came out for the ever-alert Ole to volley home from close range. Now when was that??) One thing I can say with hand on heart, I take as much pleasure now as I did 51 years ago from every victory, every great goal and suffer as much pain from every defeat. Some of you envy the fact I've been lucky enough to see all the great United teams I have over all those years. Well, I envy you, because you've got so many more great players to see in the future, long after I've gone. Incidentally I have not forgotten I have promised Part 2 of 'Hitting the Fan With United' which will be all about how much of a kick I got out of King Eric's career...I'm slowly recovering from my third eye op (I won't repeat my little joke about that) and then I'll embark on it.

@GHTT: That's called bad luck mate. But then again, no one at the Streford End saw up close our remarkable comeback against them last April! It was too bad that Coley couldn't stay that season. He really wanted a place in England's world cup squad and he saw that Fergie was putting all of his focus on the 4-4-1-1 system with Scholes playing behind Van Nistelrooy. He could have enjoyed at least 3 more prosperous years at United. He is one of my favorite players, because he is the first signing i ever saw United make: 7 million pounds from Newcastle. How much is Darren Bent worth these days?
