Remember the years of rivalry with Arsenal? The punch-ups, the tunnel chases, the red cards, the penalties, the head-butts… ah yes, those were the days.

Sadly for Arsenal fans, their club haven’t been able to sustain the success they enjoyed as our rivals, failing to win back to back titles under Wenger and reaching just one European Cup final. They have been “in transition” since 2005, like United were, however they haven’t managed to develop out of this period yet.

In contrast, United have gone from strength to strength since 2005, winning the title three years in a row, winning the European Cup (and reaching another final) and the League Cup.

Manchester United are in the process of doing the best bit of business in football history in claiming £80m for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid. Whilst other players, like Nicolas Anelka, might have made their club more of a relative profit, no deal can be compared with this of Ronaldo, who not only is being sold on for £68m profit, but who played a massive part in three league titles and a European Cup win. We’ve got all we possibly could out him, yet still made a fortune on his sale.

Ronaldo’s reason for leaving was he’d won everything in England, as well as scoring goals in the final of the European Cup, FA Cup and League Cup for United. Arsenal captain, Cesc Fabregas, wishes he had the same reason for leaving Arsenal.

“The absence of titles at Arsenal is what angers me the most,” said Fabregas. “Cristiano said he’s leaving Manchester United because he had nothing else to win. For me right now it is the exact opposite, seeing the impotence. This year we wanted it, we were giving everything – but we couldn’t reach the level that everyone expected of Arsenal. When you win, you’re well. But when you don’t, everyone is in a bad mood. For four years now, we’ve needed a title to regain our belief in ourselves.”
