ASIA CUP: How Is Park Getting On?

South Korea 2 – 1 Bahrain
Attendance: 6,669

Ji-Sung Park was captain and played just behind the striker Ji Dong-Won. It was left winger Koo Ja-Cheol who scored both the goals though.

Australia 1 – 1 South Korea
Attendance: 15,526

Park played the same role and Koo Ja-Cheol scored the only goal again.

South Korea 4 – 1 India
Attendance: 11,366
Ji Dong-Won and Koo Ja-Cheol put South Korea 2-0 up after 9 minutes before India pulled back a goal with a penalty in the 12th minute. Ji Dong-Won scored to make it 3-1 before Son Heung-Min made it 4.

As it stands, South Korea will play Iran in the quarter-finals, potentially facing Uzbekistan or Jordan in the semis.

I hope they lose soon, we need him back

  2. FULLARD says:

this competition is a joke it’s supposed to be watched by over a billion people and yet only attracts minuscule attendances. i watched the australia vs south korea game and you could actually hear individual people yelling stuff, absolutely zero atmosphere. gonna be one hell of a world cup (!)

  3. Costas says:

    Bring our boy back soon.

  4. dannysoya says:

how can you be praying for them to lose? Good luck to Park. help your team as much as possible. all i pray for is that you don;t get injured cuz you will be a massive part of our title push. you are more important this yr than you have ever been at united .

  5. kel says:

Koo Ja-Cheol is amazing. How can he score goals which won them matches for 2times and yet again he score on his third game.

  6. LucasUTD says:

    cmon you aussies

  7. RedScot says:

Good to hear this news.India have a solid defense then!

  8. Jeet says:

@RedScot : India has made some improvements in the last few years, but our starting pt. is so unbelievably primitive, that its still gonna take like 50 yrs of sustained focus on infra, coaching, and talent spotting before we even come close to competing in Asia, forget the world stage. The good news is, just like everything else, the footy industry is beginning to realize we are a potentially huge market, and hopefully that should mean some inflow of investment and expertise. On the flip side, the same logic makes Sepp Blatter talk of hosting the WC here in 20 yrs time, which would mean an embarrassment beyond belief if we get to parade our football incompetence before the entire world, simply because FIFA wants to make more $$.

  9. Chep13 says:

    I am shocked from attendances

  10. mo says:

not many countries in asia care about football

  11. willierednut says:

i think It’d be selfish to say, come home Ji. We want him to do well and come back to United with his confidence sky high. The importance of Ji is only realized, when he’s not playing for United.

  12. Always Be Closing says:

mo – most of the countries in Asia love football and watch the Premier League matches whenever they’re on.

  13. RedScot says:

@Jeet, thanks for the update on the state of football in India and its progress.
I understand what you are saying regards the reasons why you may or may not be offered to host the World cup.
I follow the thinking behind Sepp Blatter we have debated the issue’s on ROM before regards the pro’s and cons of Qatar and Russia being allowed to host the World Cup , in the future.
Anyways it was me just having a wee pop laugh at the defensive fralties of India on quickly looking at the Goals difference in the Asia cup.
All of football is geared around the moolah/sheckels mate its a bare fact but a truth.
Must go and have a glance over the Economist magazine its just dropped through my letter box.

I wonder if anybody has any updates on that player banging in the goals in Germany(Dortmund i fink) that plays for Japan and is currently participating in the Asia tournie, canna mind his name sounds like a Sushi roll or a bit of Dim Sum. United are meant to be keen on him.
8 Goals in 17 games i think it is, from midfield, nae bad eh.
Anyways must fly Economist magazine begging to be opened. lol Toodles.

  14. willierednut says:

    Cum get sum?

  15. thedonmassawe says:

    Anyone seen this? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1348228/Wayne-Rooney-best-striker-Manchester-claims-Mario-Balotelli.html

Who the hell does this kid think he is? The second coming of Pelle or something?

  16. scruffynat says:

    @RedScot

would that be Shinji Kagawa? looks quite a player!

  17. willierednut says:

Blow sideways, 18 million for Bent, plus add ons? No value there, me thinks.

  18. Saad says:

India’s problem is physicality. Example: early in the game, an Indian left-sided player took the ball off of the Korean right-back from Celtic, Cha Du Ri. After taking the ball, he ran down the wing. Cha Du Ri turned, ran him down and took the ball away from the Indian player just like that.

You need players with an average height of 5’10″ and able to run fast and have strong aerial ability. Talent is not a problem. 1 billion people…there’s bound to 30/40 good footballers in the country!

  19. Dave says:

@thedonmassawe, no, he thinks he’s better than Pele lol

  20. bigphil2003 says:

Balotelli scored a “stunning hat trick” according to that article. Two penalties?! Piss off

  21. willierednut says:

Balotelli is the undisputed king at talking shite.

  22. RedScot says:

@Scruffynat Yes thats him, mate he does look the real deal well as far as the stats go.
Somebody I think it was the moderator on Truly Reds named him as a goer for United and therefore the commercial aspects that this opens up bye recruiting from Japan.
Liking you name mate, may I be so bold and ask where that name comes from.?
A Nat to me is a fly type insect, Scruffy well thats just a Tink an untidy SOB.
I am sorta flicking back and fro doing work etc. lol
Yes well located on my briefest of info. Shinji Kagawa, just rolls of the Tongue. lol.
    Have fun. xxxx

  23. fergie is the boss says:

willierednut – perhaps Balotelli puts food up his ass and shit comes out of his mouth, because that is all I see from his mouth

  24. jay says:

Have seen what Balotelli has said about Rooney and United fans not really about Rooney because it is true but saying United fans want him to come to United. I think this boys thinks he is Ronaldo and even Ronaldo was not that arrogant and he has bundles of ability and skill and Balotelli has a big mouth.

  25. Vish says:

India’s footballing talent is defo there to be tapped into, but its the mismanagement that puts many people off. There have been some cases of players going overseas (our striker, Chhetri, was on trial at QPR and now plays in the MLS for Kansas), but overall its not managed well by the AIFF (football federation). This discourages the talent from trying at the higher levels. However, most people expected us to get absolutely annihilated in this group, and even though the scorelines show a goal difference of -10, for a fan whos followed the team, I (and im sure Jeet as well) have noticed that we never actually rolled over- we put up a pretty good fight for the most part.

  26. Gee says:

Have ranted about Bottyjelly on another thread!! Grade A fucking plank, really believes he is the best thing out there!! I honestly haven’t seen him do anything to make me think he is a world class player, no flashes of skill (Ronaldo, Messi, Rooney and Berba have all left me speechless at times) no sublime passes (Scholes still at his age makes me shake my head at how good his passing can be, even Beckham has!!) no extraordinary finishing (Ronaldo, Rooney, Messi again but Berba has had some magic finishes this season) so what is it exactly that this lad thinks he brings to football?? I honestly hope he breaks something and it ends his career coz he is over hyped and a fucking clown.

I have only mentioned a couple of great players here who have done great things from recent times I know, but if I actually thought about it I’d be here all twating night!! Somebody needs to end this fucking idiot!!

  27. bobbycharlie1968 says:

    @jay

was just about to say has anyone else seen that, I’ve never heard such rubbish in my life, claiming city have the best attack in the world, and i’m sorry but if i saw that prick in the street i would hurl insults at him, most deluded selfish arrogant cunt ive seen in football. Oh wait no, thinking of john terry. he’s still a prick though

  28. willierednut says:

    http://www.newsnow.co.uk/A/470156514?-11193

    Rafael accepts FA charge.

  29. smartalex says:

Rafael (ie Sir Alex) is sensible to accept the charge. First prize would be if he’s found innocent, never going to happen. If he’s found guilty I”d prefer it if Rafael is banned also for Blackpool. Then the maximum punishment has been meted. All the ABU’s will be smiling and we will carry on regardless. We don’t want ‘suspended’ sentences etc. Finish, and proceed to glory.

  30. UNITED4life says:

I am not a big Park fan but he is a good squade player and showed time and again his importance to the team..however if we are serious about rebuilding we have to bring a winger and top midfielder in the mold of modrich..

  31. fergie is the boss says:

UNITED4life – agreed he is a good squad player. maybe welbeck and cleverly will offer united the quality we need in the wide positions, maybe cleverly can play has a CM.

  32. K-TR7 says:

Goon in peace.i wanted a utd fan perspective about the recent Ballon d’Or awards.i find it sad that the art of defending rarely gets recognition.pique/alves/maicon are decent defenders but they are in there because of their attacking ability.vidic may not be the most technical but he’s a better defender than all of them.he has had very few bad games for like 3 years.Beckenbauer got recognition because of his ability with the ball at his feet not defending.i love attacking football but i feel defending as an art is never recognised.PS:how scholes never got recognised we’ll never know.thanks in advance.

  33. Costas says:

Gerrard wants King Kenny to be Liverpool manager for a long time.

So there’s still hope that we will get plenty of laughs from their lot next season.

  34. MyCowIsTheBest says:

i have been following Korean progress everyday. I have to say, their best player so far is that Koo Ja-Cheol, hands down. He is worthy of a place in almost any premier league club starting line-up.

I suppose Park Ji-Sung is supposed to be playing as the playmaker.. but he is closed down very tightly. Almost every team puts two men to shackle him.

  35. dannysoya says:

redscot i think you are referring to shinji kagawa the 20 yr old goal machine playing for Dortmund.

  36. fergie is the boss says:

K-TR7 – well the world player of the year in the year 2006 when cannavaro won it, shows that defending is recognised. Even though he did not really deserve it, same with kaka in 2007. xavi will be the same if he wins it in 2010

  37. UNITED4life says:

fergi is the boss-welbeck will definitly come back as a good stricket and i have high hope for cleverly but it has been long time since we get quality players through the ranks(scholes and co.) and sometimes you have to look somewhere for quality players..am still can’t understand why we didn’t go for VSV..However one bright spot on the rebuilding process is the defence; in smalling, evance, fabio and rafael we have defenders for the next decade or so..however as i said the midfield needs attention..

  38. smartalex says:

    MyCowIsTheBest
Koo Ja-Cheol had an unsuccessful trial with Blackburn in January 2010.

  39. K-TR7 says:

FIB-Thats precisely my point.cannavaro is the only defender to win it in the last decade and as you say he didn’t deserve it.they don’t even recognise goalkeepers.buffon/casillas/cech/to an extent EVDS have been excellent but rarely get mentioned.

  40. MyCowIsTheBest says:

smartalex really? wow.. but it shows how much a year can make a difference.. or maybe he just couldnt adapt.. or maybe Blackburn is not good enough for him lolololol

  41. UNITED4life says:

K-TR7- The way i see it you can’t be entertained by the skill of defenders rather strickers and creative midfielders that gives football fans joy/entertainment. I think only managers(because defence is the back bone of a winning team) would have voted for a defender. Yes defenders should be appreciated for what they do but let’s be honest here is scholes/xavi or vidic/rio gives fance some thing to enjoy? it is my perception

  42. MyCowIsTheBest says:

off topic but Steven Pienaar chose Spurs over Chelsea hahahahahaha

  43. smartalex says:

    K-TR7
Scott did an article on RoM about Ballon d’Or recipients 3 days ago (not re defenders.)
    http://therepublikofmancunia.com/united-represented-with-every-ballon-dor-winner/

A comment by Saad on that article.

    JANUARY 15, 2011 AT 10:39
    Saad says:
I personally think there aren’t enough world awards to properly recognize the contributions of different types of footballers. In America, in the MLB, there is an award for each category (hitting, pitching, fielding, etc.). Each award has its own prestige and gives due recognition to the very best in each category. There needs to be a world award for goalkeepers, defenders, central midfielders and forwards (strikers + wingers). The way the politics of football is set up, goalscorers will always outshine fullbacks even though fullbacks probably do the most amount of work in the average football match (running up and down the full length of the field, defending, attacking, sometimes even scoring goals).

My take is that the general public wants 1 overall winner, and the flashier the better.

  44. smartalex says:

    MyCowIsTheBest
    Chelsea, the new Black(burn).

  45. MyCowIsTheBest says:

    why new Blackburn?

  46. smartalex says:

I’m ‘guessing’ that Koo Ja-Cheol turned Blackburn down, now Pienaar turns Chelsea down.

  47. MyCowIsTheBest says:

    ooo.. hahaha..

i think it is a serious blow to Chelsea in terms of their pride, to have a player like Pienaar turning them down. I mean, he is good but he is not among the biggest names of the world.. hahahahahha

  48. K-TR7 says:

Smart Alex/U4L Thanks for your input.i have been thinking of it for several days now but saad’s idea would be great but i can’t see it happening.xavi/sneijder had better seasons in terms of team contribution but messi beat them all because of his individual perfomances that were dazzling.i just hope one day they’ll find a way to balance it out.

  49. walk in the park says:

i wonder why spurs needs pienaar for… since they will no be playing in CL again next season…lol

  50. FletchTHEMAN says:

I agree that there needs to be more individual awards in global football. The WFY award is going to the most influential player in the Euro or WC competition. This year it was all Barcelona because most of those lads were also on Spains WC team. enough said and probably fair enough, but always going to be overly focused on Europeans and within that lads who play for the top 8-12 teams. Again, possibly fair enough.
This still leaves alot of room for developing other awards. This could happen if someone put up 20M to establish a 1M euro award for best defender/midfielder/ etc. Still believe that the big 12 would dominate, but hey, they do try to get the best players.

  51. smartalex says:

When I heard Chelsea wanted Pienaar, I was laughing, now I’m in hysterics!
    HaHaHaHaHa. Big club, chelsea… hahahahaha!

  52. mufc4life says:

park coming back a winner wil be more of a boost than him losin out there . mon parky son

  53. smartalex says:

city vs Leicester City tonight. Starts in half an hour? I think….

  54. K-TR7 says:

U4L I may be in the minority camp on this but i usually get the same thrill watching a perfectly timed last ditch tackle as i do when watching a goal scored.i remember feeling the same emotions when eto’o ko’d the chavs last season as i did watching samuel make last ditch tackles to deny lampard/malouda clear goal scoring opportunities.i hate the ‘arry hotspuds so i got chills watching vidic throw his body at everything.thats the art of defending.

  55. smartalex says:

    mufc4life
Agreed. Silverware begets Silverware. I’m sure Ji can convince South Korea (the country is putty in his hands) to let him bring the Trophy ‘home’.

  56. Mickjk says:

K-T7R I agree with your comments and other folks too. I think what should be done is that American thing that someone mentioned. It’s a shame because most ‘football fans’ don’t realise quality defending though. I mean I argued with a load of ABU colleagues, when the question to name a world class English player was posed. Instead of going for your obvious couple I mentioned Rio ferdy5 twitter maniac and they laughed me out of the place. The guy is outstanding he reads the game so well and knows what his opponent will do a week before his opponent has even decided, he’s as graceful and patient with the ball as your likely to see, always wins an aerial battle, great influence on the pitch and has conceded what 1 foul in about 40 years. Not to mention the team he plays for have been unbeaten since he’s taken his position back and have conceded just 1 goal in the creme de la creme of club football. How can that talent not be recognised by anyone? FIFA hates the PL and it constantly shows with their favour or continental teams and players. Disgrace.

  57. smartalex says:

fantastic! city have their 1st team on the pitch, as expected. So much money spent, so many players bought. Where are they? These players will have another game added to their burn-out-bonus.

    city 0:0 Leicester City
    1 minute played.

  58. UNITED4life says:

K-TR7-i understand your point but it is only the defender plays for your team..remember the CL final at OT b/n AC vs Juve..the defence was excellent for both teams but it was the worst final in years and fans of other team including me never enjoy such game..so when it comes to such awards i think it is natural fans want creative/attacking players to win it..let me ask you this do you want to watch Barca or jose’s chelsea?

  59. willierednut says:

City fans have went to wastelands in fancy dress, as empty seats, boom boom!

  60. redrider says:

Talented players in India rarely make it into football. They strut their skills in some low level competitions, and then they worry about gettin settled and eventually quit the game. I know a lot of guys in my state Kerala who can make the current national team think about playing again. Unfortunately, the goddamn population is so hell bent on promoting a stupid waste of time called cricket. Sucks. :’-(

  61. smartalex says:

Leicester could have had 3 in the first 10 minutes.

  62. smartalex says:

    city 1:0 Leicester City Tevez

That’s ok. Break city’s hearts when Leicester equalize.

  63. smartalex says:

    Penalty for Leicester City!

  64. Sanj says:

    1-1 hahaha

  65. smartalex says:

    city 1:1 Leicester City
    20 minute played.

  66. K-TR7 says:

U4L Fair enough.barca are a delight to watch and that juve milan final was regarded as poor.however the point am making is that defending should also be applauded.not parking the bus type but brilliant artful defending that italians are famed for.

  67. K-TR7 says:

Mickjk i agree on rio.he reads the game so well that he doesn’t even have to tackle.i can’t even remember the last time he was booked.this season ive only seen him commit 1 foul in the w.brom game when he conceded a penalty.he is the beauty to vidic’s beast and thats why you are rock solid at the back.as a goon its frustrating to see vermy who is our best CB out, djourou playing so many games in a row despite missing the whole of last season, squillaci is out but yet Aw isn’t signing anyone.he neglects the defense most of the time.two years ago rosicky broke down for 18 months and he immediately went for AA.he like many football purists neglect the defensive side of the game and it may be our undoing again this season.

  68. smartalex says:

    city 3:1 Leicester City
    40 minute played.

  69. bchilds says:

It’s not nice to wish unfortune on one of our own players but I hope South Korea get knocked out! Park will still need a week or so rest anyway after the long flight and a quick run of games so the sooner he’s back at Carrington the better.

  70. TonyBee says:

How are the KYNG brothers getting on in Asia….you know FUH and WAN…. also heard WUN HUNG LOW is scraping by…….

  71. willierednut says:

The cream of sum yum guy.

  72. MG says:

And city have won the FA cup

No sorry to burst the bubble just got out of the 3rd round lol :)

  73. smartalex says:

    city 3:2 Leicester City
    87 minute played.

  74. smartalex says:

    city 4:2 Leicester City Kolarov
    87 minute played.

  75. UNITED4life says:

this guy tevez is scoaring for fun..shocking pen though..he is a player you always want to be in your team.

  76. RedScot says:

Jaysus just listening to Robbie Savage on Espn talking up City he fucking makes me want to puke.
He is a provocative twat. I hate him.
He just angers me watching his tirade of nonesense.

  77. Costas says:

    @UNITED4life

Heh, I prefer Berb though. :)

  78. UNITED4life says:

    @Costas

hey man! i know you are Berba’s big fan and to his credit he improved this season.

  79. willierednut says:

Has Tevez been watching Rooneys penalty’s? Leicester played well, great away support for a midweek game.

  80. Costas says:

    @UNITED4life

Yeah but a bigger United fan than a Berba one obviously, lol. Yeah he has improved, but I am a bit bothered by our goalscoring in recent games. After the Blackburn game, we’ve scored no more than 2 goals in our games.

  81. UNITED4life says:

Costas-i think that we managed only few goals in most part down to our creativity in midfield..it is not that the strickers missed that many chances..we lack creativity and scholes was a big miss in that period.

  82. Costas says:

    @UNITED4life

Yeah we’ve missed him on that department. It’s not always about assists or goalscoring nowdays. Just the way he controls our tempo and sets up attacking moves. I am sure the Reserves would like him to play for them every week after yesterday, lol.

  83. UNITED4life says:

Costas-I hope this summer we will give that department a long over due attention..i don’t think we will go on like this for another season..btw the retur of Valencia will gie us some option as well.

  84. UNITED ROAD says:

I saw the three games for korea ,park did well he was soooooooo fast they will face Iran in the next match I really wish him all the best & also missed him at united :(

  85. smartalex says:

    UNITED ROAD
That’s great to hear, thanks. Do they stand a good chance of going all the way?

  86. mltezr says:

    cmon Australia.

  87. KJ says:

I’m from Bahrain so I’m gutted that we didn’t make it through. We played really well against Park and co as well. I’ll be backing him all that way for sure though.

  88. smartalex says:

    KJ
Hello there Bahraini. What can you tell us about Park at the tournament?

  89. Dave Malaysia says:

I want Park Ji Sung to win the Asian Cup,celebrate with his country, retire from international duty on a high, focus on Manchester United ,after a deserved rest, come back into the team and continue where he left off, take it into another higher level and play for years with us.

The trustworthy ,loyal ,hardworking ,never say die atitude ,brilliant goals when we need it player.

Love and respect. True Red. God Bless.

  90. Jeet says:

    MyCowIsTheBest says:
off topic but Steven Pienaar chose Spurs over Chelsea hahahahahaha

MCTB – he probably has a GF/wife who doesnt want to be part of “his” team……….:)

  91. Red Typhoon says:

Hey guys, let me teel you…i am here in Qatar and i have watched all games Korea have played…not that i am Korean..but…it’s coz of our boy Mr. Park… :)

Atmosphere that you get on Tv does not really do justice when you are actually in the stadium though. But seriously, attendances are really bad anyway!! Anyway not as near as atmospheric as The Theatre Of Dreams though on a European Night!! :)

I am going to the hotel tonite or every other day to see if Park is hanging around to get a pic taken with him and also an autograph. Wish me luck guys..need me to pass a message too him??..lol

  92. Red Typhoon says:

    Sorry..it’s let me tell* you….not teel you..LOL

  93. ROONEY MAKUEI says:

j.s.park well done to bring asia cup to south korea and to show the world were you are coming from england of manchester united

  94. smartalex says:

    Red Typhoon
Good luck mate! And wish Ji the best of tournaments for all us RoMmers. Tell him to come back healthy and raring to go!

  95. Utdforever says:

Always laughed at those who used to slag off Ji and some still do. He’s a top little football who scores vital goals in big games and works like a bloody horse. Can’t figure out how some fans don’t rate him but he fits in really well at Utd with his strong work ethic, clever runs and crucial goals.. great little player and a pleasure to watch. Good luck Ji, hope you come home soon pal as we need you in our midfield engine.
