Becks: No Club Can Repeat 1999

With David Beckham’s contract with LA Galaxy coming to an end the midfielder has been linked with a move back to Europe.

Having already played in England, Spain and Italy, French side PSG are the latest team to show an interest.

However, when he has finished playing, he claims he would like to turn to United in some role, just like his former Real Madrid team mate Zidane.

“I’d love to do that,” said Beckham. “The best memory of my career came in 1999, no doubt, when Manchester United won the treble. In my opinion, no club can repeat that feat.”

well a certain Manchester United can do that ( again ) ;)

  2. Saad says:

uhhh, no doubt I am biased towards our own Treble but…what about Barcelona and Inter? They too have done Trebles.

  3. Buliwyf says:

Bloody Barcelona and Inter did it (easy league and cup though :-)

  4. feedemscraps says:

Except Inter? Maybe just in this country, eh Becks.

  5. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

I think he includes the coming back from being down part too.

  6. spacemanspiff says:

Maybe Becks is talking about England. Barcelona and Inter did the treble.

  7. ClaytonBlackmoresTan says:

Bnanana and Innerner did the treblahblah-

    Sound like fecking ABU’s.

The WAY we did it will never be repeated, especially the teams we beat along the way and the strength of the English sides at the time.

1999, oh, how I love thee.

  8. Costas says:

One thing’s for sure. It’s impossible to replicate those crazy last 3 minutes again. In a Ch.League final nonetheless…

  9. King Eric says:

I don’t think it will be repeated BUT if it is it will be this new United team in a few years. It fucks me off when the media talk about Arsenal and the Rentboys winning quadruples in December. They haven’t got it in them.

  10. King Eric says:

ClaytonBlackmoresTan – Hello mate. Yes and also considering the strength of teams like Inter and Juve we knocked out along the way.

  11. Red rob v says:

1999 – just thinking about it again makes
me excited at united. The affect on the players would have given that extra never
say die mentality – hope it does not fade as the new players come through. Is there anyone left playing? Did Giggs play in the
    final? That’s it I think.

  12. José McG says:

Prem League, FA cup, and Champs league in one season!!! Neither Barca or Inter will ever be capable of doing that, lol. No mater how much possession Barca have.

Just saw Hernandez’ goal in training with Mexico, check it out

    http://football-talk.co.uk/43294/video-javier-hernandez-scores-stunning-goal-mexico-training/

I think he’s ready for the dippers.

  13. CedarsDevil says:

A list of European teams that won the treble (League, Cup & European Cup )

    Celtic 1967
    Ajax 1972
    PSV 1988
    United 1999
    Barca 2009
    Inter 2010

Other trebles were achieved however by winning the UEFA (Europa) cup

  14. wiuru says:

Leaving aside the treble , a role similar to Zidane ? Will the wife let him ? If its at his own expense and time maybe .He is not for me his lifestyle has been to glitzy.self absorbed in his own image. Maybe the FA has more for you David .

  15. feedemscraps says:

Who’s an ABU,ya jumped up little prick.

  16. King Eric says:

feedemscraps – ? Who is that directed at mate?

  17. King Eric says:

I thought the dippers won the treble in 01? Ha. Silly cunts.

  18. CedarsDevil says:

    King Eric

Like fuck they did! Remember we were the team that prevented them from achieving the proper treble back in 1977 and so it will forever be written in history that United were the first English club to win the treble….

  19. feedemscraps says:

    Claytons fake tan.

  20. ClaytonBlackmoresTan says:

King Eric, hello mate, it’s all about the style and drama of it and quality of the oppo…

feedemscraps- No one is an ABU as far as i’m aware-I said ‘sounds like’ to make a point- jumped up little prick? Save your bile for the Scousers sunshine and mind your fucking manners.

Jumped up? Definitely. Little? Not compared to your cock. Prick? I’d say that was a fair assumption.

  21. NotoriousRedDevil says:

His glitz and glamour would actually work wonders for the club in the Director of Football role if he were to come. When you see the personnel other clubs hire for that role, he is definitely head and shoulders above the majority. Cannoli at the vermin springs to mind. If he speaks to a young player they will instantly be drawn in because of that horrible horrible “glitz and glamour.” However being viewed by many on ROM as the evil dastardly cockney will always work against him.

  22. Gerriered says:

    Hi Reds,

Well said Becks, though from many posts above it is evident that it has been done by many other clubs except not in England…

  23. AK47 says:

leave David alone, he probably hadn’t taken his clever pills before he gave this interview.

  24. King Eric says:

feedemscraps – I don’t think Clayton meant anything mate.

  25. King Eric says:

Cedars – Oh I know mate. I love the way the dippers call the FA Cup, UEFA Cup and League cup their treble!!

  26. FletchTHEMAN says:

First, Becks is paying us a complement. Low class not to be a bit gracious me thinks.
Second, Becks is talking about the English classic treble, as he is english and understands that he would only fit in as an English symbol, which he is.
Third, Who cares if it is marketing. The man is a world wide brand and surely made his biggest mark in a United shirt. Surely this club is big enough, and has enough marketing savvy, to use him. Not much different than Dennis Law coming back as a United ambassador after playing for some rivals etc.

Come back to the fold Becks, theres a good lad.

  27. WillieRedNut says:

Quite right Becks! It will never be done again in this country. An incredible achievement by the lads.

  28. Sparkz says:

Extremely unlikely to be done again by a Premier League side. Why? Becausen the pace and intensity of our League is ridiculous. Even since 1999, we’ve come close on a few occasions (07,08,09 and 2011). But always came up short.

In this League we’re far more likely to get fatigued/injured as the season closes. Fergie’s always said that we were really lucky in 1999, in that we didn’t get any big injuries (bar Giggsy’s dodgy hamstrings!), which 99% of the time will never happen again. That was a freak, once in a blue moon occurrence.

Spanish and Italian teams play in a less intense league, which is why they are always more likely to do a Treble. Its credit to us that we’ve been there or thereabouts over the last few years.

Also gotta say- I’ve never understood the lack of respect many have for Becks. The guy is an absolute legend. Yeah he’s a bit showbizzy- but he was quality for us. Supported Utd since he was a kid, gave his all for us, and is always respectful towards the club.

  29. King Eric says:

Sparkz – Good post but lets not forget we did the European Cup without Keano and Scholes. Now THAT in itself is a huge achivement.

  30. King Eric says:

Oh and as much as I hate the Legend debate on Becks, in my eyes he isnt a legend. A fucking great player and a top lad for us but his final year or two left a sour taste . Top lad and will always respect him for what he did for United.

  31. Giggsy's Lawyer says:

    ClaytonBlackmore’sTan – never change please. :D

  32. What??? says:

He’s absolutely right, you won’t ever see another club win a Treble like 1999.

@King Eric, agreed at 11:20 mate. Alex is taking it back to mid 90s with this new lot. Who knows what they’ll achieve under the Genius? Having the Class of 99 around the Club will work wonders for years to come as well.

  33. What??? says:

With Beckham, must say time heals all wounds that aren’t fatal. Between an alleged/accidental/well aimed boot and Beckham’s shenanigans, I think him and Alex have let that pass under the bridge a while ago. I can completely understand any United supporter stopping short of calling Beckham a legend because of it, but future supporters who look back on his whole career will see him as one of the Clubs many legends based on his performances alone.

  34. Fred says:

I think our Treble was the most impressive feat of all the examples Cedars listed.

Did you know that Bayern were also going for their Treble when we beat them in Barcelona? 8)

  35. Fred says:

Don’t forget what a difficult path we had to the Treble. We had Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in the FA Cup (the Chelsea and Arsenal games going to replays) and in the Champions League we had to overcome a group including Bayern Munich and Barcelona, then Inter and Juventus in the knockout rounds and then Bayern again in the final (who, as I said, were also looking to complete a Treble.)

  36. Fred says:

In the Premier League we were going head to head with a damn good Arsenal team, who had won the Double the previous season. Chelsea were pretty handy too that season, eventually finishing 3 points behind Arsenal and 4 behind us.

  37. Fred says:

So don’t talk to me about “Barca” beating Racing Nobody 6-0 evey week and getting a helping hand from UEFA in every round of the Champions League.

Don’t talk to me about Inter either, who were by far the richest team in Italy and had won the previous 9 Serie A titles or something.

This is what Becks means when he says the feat will never be replicated.

(The other teams were before my time, so someone else will have to belittle their achievements for me.)

  38. smartalex says:

Well then what shall we talk about? I also like to belittle belatedly, so fuck ‘em all again!

  39. Belfast Red says:

Would love Beckham to come back in some capacity. He loves UTD,its in his heart. He had an unbelievable season the year of the treble, which came off the back of that sending off. Wankers up and down the league were vilifying him and his riposte was supreme. He racked up so many assists and scored some important goals along the way that year. I think he has missed the club, would make a great ambassador.

  40. Busbybabes says:

This treble is “special” for him ! only with UNITED you can feel it !

  41. feedemscraps says:

KE, your probably right, my apologies to the tan man.
