Berba: I Am Staying

After Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t even give a spot on the bench in the Champions League final to the Premier League top scorer, Dimitar Berbatov, it was hard to imagine that the Bulgarian had a future at the club. With just one year remaining on his current deal, it looked as though the striker who scored more winning goals than any player in the league (according to Opta) would be off.

Two days after the final, United were set to show the Premier League trophy to the fans in Manchester. After failing to travel back to Manchester with the team, it was assumed that Berba would be absent. However, he spent a large chunk of the parade at the front of the bus, grinning and filming the occasion.

Exhibiting his excellent attitude once again, Berba has confirmed that despite being shunned for this final, he will stay and fight for his place in the next one.

“I will stay,” Berbatov told Bulgarian TV. “I will fight for the twentieth title. There will be new finals and we will be fighting for new titles. I am moving ahead. When you go through difficult times, you should not quit. Everything at Manchester United starts from scratch for me on July 4th.”

Berba wasn’t seen in the stands and some reports suggested he had left the ground, which was quickly denied by the manager and his agent.

“The truth is that I stayed at the dressing room and watched the Champions League final there, on a TV screen,” he said. “I was really disappointed. I was ashamed that I was not part of the team and did not want people to see how sad I feel.”

Personally, I am glad Michael Owen is staying as well….

  6. hammons says:

Oh, and it does not matter if Berbatov wants to stay or not. It is all what Sir Alex Ferguson wants.

  7. Costas says:

It’s great to hear. I love this man’s attitude. I wish it was enough.

  8. denton davey says:

    Costas @ 11:40: ” I love this man’s attitude. I wish it was enough.”

Sums up my position on Dimmy; maybe, he will be better next year – playing more centrally and more forward, he had a very good year but I always have the sense that he should do more.

The talent is there but I always have the feeling that he’s a square-peg-in-a-round-hole.

C’mon Dimmy, prove me wrong !

  9. Mannings says:

Park was left out of the sqaud in 2008. Let’s hope this has the same effect on Berbatov!

May it be a Berbatunday every day for us and the rest of his Berbareer!!

  13. MG says:

    Excellent news

We need WC midfielder – no need to change the striking department – injury free Michael Owen will be brilliant too

  14. MG says:

The United ladies can take a very deep sigh of relief

  15. Balaji Sivaraman says:

@denton, Square peg in a round hole. Pretty much what me and Costas were discussing in the other thread.

Words cannot explain my admiration for Dimitar Berbatov, the player and the person. His technical skills is second to none and his character is perfect for United.

But Sir Alex’s mind is set to a different tune and he wants us to play a style of football for which I feel Dimitar Berbatov will never be suited for. Unless we specifically make perfect use of him like we did in the early part of the season which, with the advent of Chicarito, I don’t think we will.

I think moving on will be better for him in a sense but I would love if he stays and if we find some way to work with him. I have no idea what Sir Alex feels but I’ve always felt that he was a fan of having four top-quality strikers – Rooney, Chicha, Owen and Berba.

Also, not to mention, we might “need” Berba if Sir Alex decides to permanently shift Rooney to a more central role from next season.

  16. Gorse Hill Red says:

At least we know he will fight for his place which is good for United.

  17. Saad says:

More than him staying, I hope major success comes his way. So far, he has 2 Premier League titles and a Golden Boot. I hope he gets more. Such positive attitude deserves some reward in the end. I know he wants that Champions League medal more than anything else now. May God give that to him.

  18. robbo says:

Hope he stays, as well. If we pick up a decent midfielder (Sneider / Modric ) Dimi will have some decent service.

  19. livewia says:

YESS!!! Get in Berba you absolute genius you!!! Go out and win the golden boot again, coz apparently winning it this year is still not enough for some people…

  20. bchilds says:

Great news, less so about Owen!

  21. Saad says:

These two pieces of news might also suggest that Danny Welbeck will either stay out on loan at Sunderland or be sold. No point in him staying at OT and wasting time on the bench. Better he get 30-40 games at a Premier League club and score 15-20 goals.

  22. S18 says:

With this attitude and determination how can anyone not liking him?? My love for him grown deeper and deeper! LOL!! After all the humiliation he av to endure…he STILL wants to stay!! What a FIGHTER!! what a MAN!!

  23. lukemallia says:

Great attitude !!! if any more players were like him

  24. Zelh says:

Still don’t understand why Owen is staying.
He (Owen) playned just 11 games as the 4th striker. How many games will Welbeck play as the 5th?!
As much as I rate Owen Welbeck deserved his chance.

  25. Costas says:

He also said that he watched the game from the dressing room because he didn’t want people to see how disappointed he was about missing out. It’s really ridiculous how modest he is compared to former players of ours when they lost their spot.

  26. Andykong says:

    What a class act!

So many other players will have thrown an almighty hissy fit in the same situation.

So so happy he is staying

  27. sachu says:

    @costas
    good point mate
also having seen how players like tevez ronaldo and rooney behaved
    thisis certainly great
i expected him to say this to be honest
but it doesnt realy matter wat matters is if fergie wants him or not

  28. Saad says:

    @Zelh

Owen has played for Liverpool, Real Madrid and now United. Going to any other club would be a major drop in standard for him. He’s at the twilight of his career and he doesnt want to just fade away. Why should he? He wants to go out with a bang. Can he get that bang at Aston Villa or Sunderland or Fulham?? No. At United, he has a chance of winning things…scoring important goals…getting that Champions League medal he desperately wants.

I do believe, though, that he’s been under-utilized. There’s more to come from Michael Owen.

  29. GhostViking says:

When it comes to the bulgarian i think many of you are deluded.
ffs when van nisteroy had to go as he was stopping our counterattacking he was sold and he was a GOAL MACHINE who ALSO SCORED IN THE BIG GAMES.
Andy Garcia is slow, lazy, big game bottler, arrogant and chastizes our players if the ball doesnt arrive where he wants it.
HE IS OUR RECORD SIGNING BUT IS NOT TRUSTED WHEN IT MATTERS.

bUT yeah lets keep him i mean 30 million for a bench warmer is really sensible isnt it?

GLAD WERE KEEPING OWEN, HE NEEDED 1 SHOT TO SCORE AGAINST BLACKPOOL, ANDY NEEDED 7 AND STILL DIDNT SCORE EVEN 1 GOAL.

When did the bulgarian last score in the champions league?
Anderson has scored THREE since then, YES ANDERSON.

Oh yeah its ridiculous to claim the bulgarian has a great attitiude. He wants to stay where he is THIRD choice striker, what a winning mentality!

A great attitude where he sulked like a little girl and couldnt be fucked to SUPPORT HIS TEAM MATES IN THE CHAMP LEAGUE FINAL!

get rid while hes still worth anything.

  30. Zelh says:

Saad – most of the time he was injured so I dunno if he ‘s been under-utilized. And still Welbeck derserved his spot in the team like SAF said, but I dunno how he wants to give him enough game-time.

  31. United4eva says:

Although Berbatov wishes to stay I don’t necessarily think the club want him to. Re-signing Owen today when they’ve had months to re-sign Berba, to me, sends of a clear sign. The guy’s class, yes, but so was Van Nistlerooy. Ruud scored more goals and was even more crucial to us winning the title in 2002/03 when his continous goalscoring dragged us to the title in a manner in which Berba’s preXmas form cannot even compare. Yet when the Boss wanted to change the style of play Ruud got the boot and I just dont see how Berbatov fits into Fergie’s thinking. He wants to play hard pressing, fast paced football and Berbatov can do many things on a football pitch but not that.

  32. Saad says:

GhostViking really loves Berbatov, doesnt he? :)

    Now bloweth the RoM volcano…

  33. Costas says:

Wow. Looks like Berb slept with someone’s wife. How many chances did Michael Lethal Owen need to score against Juventus by the way? Get a grip.

    @sachu

I agree. That’s why I said that his desire might not be enough. And imo Fergie has decided to move ahead without him. But it is refreshing to see a player understand it’s a team game as opposed to the likes of Tevez.

  34. Saad says:

    @Zelh

I think Welbeck needs a little bit more development as a true centre-forward and needs to improve his fitness. I personally find it inexcusable when professional athletes frequently come down with muscle injuries like calf strains and hamstring pulls. Giggsy used to have the same problems in his younger years and he’s dealt with them now primarily by taking yoga.

  35. Bohemet says:

After the news about Scholes yesterday this was great news :)
I would rather have Berba than Owen, who just will take up space for Welbeck.

  36. GhostViking says:

    @ UNITED4EVER,
    spot on sir,

To be honest , id take ashley young over berbatov, young is young lol , mobile skillful and can be a better player at OT.
Under 20 mil is a good price for him i beleive.

JUST DONT BUY ANYMORE SPURS PLAYERS PLEASE!!!

  37. MG says:

    No Benzema then :(

  38. MG says:

    Ashley Young?

    God no

  39. Kevin says:

Thank God.lt’s a squad game nowadays.l am glad that even Owen is staying.lf we are to win all competitions we should ensure we are covered in all areas be it injuries or fatigue after Champions league away games.

  40. GhostViking says:

COSTAS what are you on about juventus for? I dont see the connection.
Did or did not the bulgarian have 7 chances to score against blackpool but fucked them all up?

I d say thats why he was isnt even in the fucking squad, wouldnt you?

  41. Oscar Madison says:

He is pure class. So many athletes in all sports can learn from him.

  42. musca says:

ashley young? oh please no, he’s overrated. i’d rather have berbatov than 2 ashleys

  43. Red Devil says:

Great man…I must say I had a similar situation at work, when after giving my all and being acknowledged and commended by senior people at several times, I was left in the lurch when it came to the final reckoning in favour of some undeserving (but hot!!) bitch.

I gave it another year but the same fucking thing happened again and this time it just broke the camel’s back and I was outta there…but this guy here is showing such tremendous resolve and such a fantastic attitude swallowing his ego and all….I bow my head in respect my man….absolutely brilliant.

My respect for him as a person has just gone up ten-fold

  44. Saad says:

Aren’t there any decent left-footed talent out there to replace Giggsy? How is it that we always miss out on the Overmars’s and Robbens?

  45. GhostViking says:

    mg yes ashley young,
Its simple really he and abonglahor ripped us to peices at villa park, remember how they gave vidic a rough ride.

Berbatov gives noone a tough ride , he is slow so the defence push right up and he becomes a peripheral figure/

We need young hungry playerss not 30 year olds who are happy to sit on the bench.
With Owen its ok for him to be a fringe player HE WAS A FREE TRANSFER NOT OUR RECORD SIGNING OF 31.7MIL.

  46. Costas says:

So what? The Blackpool game was the deciding factor that would make or break a United career? How about the 21 goals that Berbatov scored before that? Those count for nothing? Say what you will about Berbatov, but he played a huge part in us winning title 19 and deserves more respect that what he’s got from some United fans. So yeah, he should have been at least on the bench at Wembley.

And I mentioned the Juventus game to prove that even Owen can miss 7, 17 or 27 chances in a game. It happens.

  47. Costas says:

On that note. Sell Berba and buy Heskey. ;)

  48. GhostViking says:

Id bet most of the berbalovers are foreign

  49. badger says:

Alright lads, long time reader here but not really posted before.

I think a lot of people are missing the point with Berba, he’s a class player no doubt but its blatantly obvious that Fergie doesn’t trust him one bit – the big games where we have needed him to step up (Blackburn away last season, City FA Cup this season etc) he has failed. Not only that but when he misses a few chances his head goes down and he might as well not be on the pitch, compare that to Rooney that even when he was playing shite he kept going for 90 mins and would lift the team, something that Berbs has never done.

GhostViking makes a vaild point in that Berbs doesn’t suit or style of play, we are (or at least used to be) a fast, counter attacking team but he slows it down too much. Great player yes but square peg in round hole is just about right to me.

  50. Saad says:

What is the opinion on Eden Hazard?

  51. harry says:

Great commitment, can’t argue with that. How many other people would come out so soon and still pledge everything to the club after being completely snubbed. Only worry is.. is it his decision to make? I have a feeling this snub was part of a wider plan to ship him out to be honest. If you don’t put Berbatov on the bench for the Champions League Final then he obviously isn’t in the manager’s long term plans. Great response from Berba but I just think his card has been marked and he will effectively be forced out. Could be wrong but the signs are there.

  52. Costas says:

    Racist on top of ignorant?

  53. willierednut says:

MG – Pretty much much my thoughts. Once we get a keeper and a top CM, I’ll start to relax a little. Heard Fergie went on holiday today and Gill has the task of getting the players the boss wants. I hope it doesn’t drag on all summer.

  54. Doghouse says:

United won their 19th title because of our amazing home form. Berbatov -was- that amazing home form for the majority of the season. For the months where Rooney was shit, actually, factually, fucking useless and bitching about quitting the club, Berbatov lead the line for us, kept us in the league, set us up to win the title as part of the 29 game unbeaten run. Of course we were all overcome with Shock And Awww when Chicharito started banging in goals for fun, but Berbatov (and Nani) at the front line carried us through the season. Carried a team with a wonky midfield, that was being derided and written off by all elements of the press, and won us games.

I don’t want to sound harsh, but anybody who doesn’t rate Berbatov is a fucking retard. And I’m sorry if that offends people but it’s true. You have got to have the memory of a goldfish and the mind of a chimp not to recognise that Berbatov’s contribution was absolutely critical to the 19th title win. Without Berbatov we wouldn’t have won 19. Simple as that. The stats bear that out, watching the fucking matches bears that out. Hell the economics bears it out, we’ve paid the money already, that’s the hard part done, so why talk about getting rid at all?

Going forward, without Berbatov we don’t win title 20 next season. We all saw the champions league final. We all saw that, when push comes to shove, even our much beloved Little Pea is capable of an absolute mare. Berbatov is not the only player who chokes you know. Hell Rooney was gagging on his own arse for half the season. For Cantona’s sake the guy was the top scorer in the league and he was barely even playing for a big chunk of it. Does that not count for anything?

Maybe I’ve just been trolled, I dunno. But I happen to think Dimitar Berbatov is not only one of the most gifted players ever to wear our shirt, but he’s also a really good guy who has worked hard, and continues to work hard, and who deserves to be treated better by the fans of the club. Makes me sick to my arse the way some people conduct themselves.

  55. Notey90 says:

Aftr his hat trick agnst liverfool “..I’M HAPPY AT UNITED AND WANT TO END MY FOOTBALL CAREER HERE. I CANT SEE MYSELF PLAYING FOR ANOTHER CLUB BESIDES UNITED, AND IF SO, I BETTER QUIT MY PLAYING CAREER..”

    Berba breathes United. Top Class.

  56. musca says:

    doghouse

well said. that just summed up everything to the haters and complain-ers

  57. GhostViking says:

YES he scored over 20 goals but that is what happens when you play for united. That has to do with valencia nani giggs rooney too no?

I dont see why you have to defend him to the death , are you his agents?
OUR BOSS DOES NOT TRUST HIM

You guys can call him a god , say hes a genius , say hes sexy like portugese princess you can say hes the top scorer. BUT all that means nothing if SIR alex wants the bulgarian out.

He does NOT play in the important games FACT so whats the fucking point?
OUR record signing and i expect a LOT more

  58. Costas says:

That was a belter Doghouse. :)

  59. GhostViking says:

no not racist costas far from it call it an observation.
    Is it true?

  60. Costas says:

Yeah why would we support a United player to death? Lets trash him.

  61. Costas says:

    @GhostViking

Have you conducted a poll here?

  62. wayne says:

berba you had nothing to be ashamed of buddy,it was wrong what happened to you.like a few others said utd resigning owen imo leaves the writing on the wall for berba.
on the surface it looks like berba will be used to raise funds to sign someone else.
fuck me though gotta love his attitude and desire to stay, been a fucking doormat by the press, the fans and finally sir alex.
hope he stays makes utd a much more cohesive and would have had a better chance of beating barca with him playing.
other news carrick is suffering from a mental breakdown been withdrawn from the england squad, looks like the pressure has finally got to him, that’s really fucked up hope he can work it out

  63. Fred says:

He’s going to be sold anyway. This is heartbreaking for the guy.

  64. wayne says:

ignore the carrick statement one of those stupid fake reports, just woke up only 6.30am got sucked in

  65. Costas says:

    @wayne

Hi mate. What happened with Carrick? I thought it was a hip injury that ruled him out of the England game.

  66. MG says:

    GhostViking

Unless you are in any sort of way close to Sir Alex Ferguson:

“OUR BOSS DOES NOT TRUST HIM” and any statements to that point are absolute full of fucking shit

Nani didn’t start the CL final does that mean that the boss doesn’t trust him?

Or Scholes? Or Rafael? Or Evans?

Give it a fucking break – Football Manager is all well and good – no one including me knows what the gaffer is thinking and why he thinks it – to argue otherwise is fucking hypocritical.

  67. Costas says:

Ah, forget it wayne. Drink some coffee before you read reports mate. :D

  68. Fred says:

It’s one thing that the fans seemed to prefer Tevez to him, but Sir Alex choosing Michael Owen over him? That’s just a slap in the face.

  69. wayne says:

Costas one of those spoof sites mate didn’t pick up on it

  70. Swissdevil says:

great attitude, incredible loyality! Cmon Berba, score 30 next season!

  71. portugueseprincess says:

“The truth is that I stayed at the dressing room and watched the Champions League final there, on a TV screen,” he said. “I was really disappointed. I was ashamed that I was not part of the team and did not want people to see how sad I feel.” awwwwwwwww, that would have broken my heart too lololol :)

  72. Fred says:

@MG – come on, not even putting him on the bench for the final is pretty damning evidence. What other big games has he started for us?

  73. MG says:

I’m sorry – it seems that the gaffer deemed Hernandez to be the better starter at the latter stage of the campaign and up until the CL final it worked

What Berba did was important – fair enough he didn’t do it in the FA cup SF – but neither did any one else

United fail collectively or make it collectively – arguably some players may move on because they are just not good enough – but all you lot calling for Berbas head go fucking find a world class striker for peanuts and then talk to me – the fact you can’t means this conversation is over.

  74. willierednut says:

I’d have a mental breakdown as well, trying to chase that lot on Saturday. Felt sorry for Carrick. He tried his best, but came up against two world class midfielders, in their pomp. Didn’t help either, playing him with Giggsy, who’s mind clearly wasn’t on the job.

  75. wayne says:

@Costas lol my morning routine is put coffee on and go to newsnow for updates while coffee is brewing should start using the timer.

  76. Fred says:

@portugueseprincess – I know! Damn, Fergie is pretty ruthless. He must have known how this would hurt Berba. I can’t believe he could be so cold, especially after he had to leave out Park in the 2008 final.

Did anyone here believe Owen could actually do anything against Barcelona?

  77. MG says:

    Fred

Oh yes then let’s come on Shall we fuck Rafael John and Evans too?

I admit players like Obertan Diouf to a certain extent Macheda and Bebe may go – wether for good or for loan but players like Berba who kept this team when it was thrown into chaos by WR – he’s a big man holding his nerve – and he’ll be a bigger man for firing on the team next season

Seriously I don’t give a shit what big games he has started or not – that’s not my job to pick the team – I respect the man – other players just wilt in SAF mind games – so fair play to him.

  78. minimal says:

hope he stays. really pissing me off people who say he’s not good or not united player, without him we would win fuck all this season.

  79. FULLARD says:

with an attitude like his we should sign him up for life. but with his footballing ability the question of weather the club want him to stay should never have been questioned in the first place.

  80. Mr C says:

Rejoice – this is great news!

@Doghouse – 100% excellent post! Thanks for telling it as it is.

  81. Costas says:

The thing with Park, is that at the time we also had Hargo, Giggs, Ronaldo and Nani that could do the job on the wing. Regardless of his performances against Barcelona in the semis, he had a tough job if he was going to be a part of the Moscow squad. In Berbatov’s case, I think he felt worse because he lost his spot on the bench to one player that’s scored 16 goals less than him this season.

    @wayne

Yeah that might be better, lol. You will find a lot of bs on newsnow. Especially the Daily Mail articles!

  82. MG says:

    willierednut

    Good point that

Thanks to Imogen Thomas Giggsy decided to have a bad night on the wrong night – damn forget the way Barca play – the way they mentally go about the game is something else too – United are equal in that department and let themselves down when they at least couldn’t go one to one with Barcas mental technique.

Again the side doesn’t need to change so far but it does need the appropriate personnel to put a bite back in in order to take teams like Barca on.

  83. Jeet says:

@Wyane: WTF re Carrick? Source? “Mental breakdown” sounds effing strong, mate!
@Costas: Racist and ignorant, but you got it wrong. It’s actually the mum, not the wife!
@GhostViking: Let’s assume you showed a little more respect to Berbatov. If I were to do such a thought experiment, I would have “reasoned” with you. I would have reminded you how the foreigner Berbatov rescued our season when it was at risk of unravelling due to the shenannigans of homeboy Rooney. I would have reminded you that a guy who scores a hattrick against Liverpool and scores the winning goal in more matches than any of his EPL compatriots deserve more admiration and patience from us and the manager. I would have reminded you that to score in the CL, you actually need to play those matches.
But, since you haven’t shown due respect for Berbatov, I will tell you this – I do not want to reason with you. You intelligence has shrivelled like a mangy leper’s cock. You do not deserve the joys of being a Berbatov fan, or a United fan. You deserve the abuse of all true Reds. You deserve to fuck off right now, because if you don’t the foreign Berba fans will punch so many holes in you, you won’t know which one’s for speaking and which one’s for farting. Ohh, why bother – you talking outta your ass anyway! FUCK OFF!

  84. scott deletes anti berbatov posts says:

costas owen scored with 1 shot coming on as sub
Berbatov scored 0 with 7 attempts

Why on earth would you play the guy with. such poor conversion rate?
You think you re gonna get 7 chances to score agaiinst barca um, no

Rooney and chicha started as they are

    faster
    more clinical
    a better partnership
    close down defenders

    make good runs
    etc etc

  85. redbob says:

I cant believe we are debating the striker department at this stage. Surely midfield
is the area which needs strenghtening.

The simple minded will always look at the strikers first in order to improve a team, but
the midfield is often more important actually.

  87. Costas says:

    @MG, willie

Personally, I don’t think the scandal affected Ryan that much. I just don’t think he could do anything more on the night. Giggsy’s pace works for him when he plays against Chelsea’s midfield, but the Barcelona one is a differet animal. More passing and more movement. He had the same problems in the Rome final. It was a sad issue that heading into the Wembley final we didn’t have a perfect midfield partner for Carrick. Not saying that’s why we lost, but it didn’t help.

    @Jeet

    Lol. Touche.

  89. livewia says:

I’d rather have Berbs coming in for the non “big games” (that phrase cracks me up…EVERY game has been a big game this year!) and bang in 20+ a season, than have someone coming on who can’t perform.

And what is all this bollocks about big games anyway??? HELLOOOO???? LIVERPOOL???? HAT-TRICK???? JEEZ!!!

And IMHO (and with hindsight) the BIGGEST game of them all, the champions league final, was begging out for some Berba class…because, once again, IMHO, Chicha did nothing. In fact he was so offside he gave possession straight back to the opposition. Berba should have played, he would have held the ball up at least.

    Costas

Someone said to me we should have done this:

    VDS
    Smalling Vidic Rio
    Fabio/Valencia Rafael/Fabio
    Carrick Scholes
    Anderson
    Rooney
    Hernandez

I don’t know if that is the answer – he partly mentioned the Arsenal FA cup game as reason

I thought I’d throw it out for the sake of throwing out.

  93. FletchTHEMAN says:

Classy response from Berbatov. Would be very pleased with him and the club if he stayed, but starting to think he will be part of a trade from all the press. The prices quoted for Modric and the italian lad are beyond ridiculous so feel Berba is our most valuable make weigh for those.

  94. slim says:

You need players like Berbatov in my opinion. T e champs league is always going to be a good reference.

With all the pace SAF could muster in his squad, it wasn’t effective for over 80% of the game. We see now that having players with fantastic ability on the ball is a must. Not saying he would have made a diffrence on the night. Only saying that if more players were as comfortable and classy on the ball we could have given a better account of ourselves .

That leads me to the square peg in a round hole analogy. Yes it seems that way but why isn’t any one thinking about mending the hole to take in square pegs. Again after the game on Saturday, its more and more apparent that a change in strategy, thinking, personnel is required. Berbs can play a huge part in any gamble SAF decides to take and make no mistake the enormity of the challenge he faces will make it just that, a gamble.

His attitude is good, very good. Like OGS, except we didn’t pay 30million for him, that nutter GhostViking said it though, if SAF doesn’t want him then he’s most likely off.

  95. urval87 says:

The attitude of this man is unbelievable. After reading those lines he said about being ashamed that he was not part of the team, I nearly welled up.

Though I don’t think that he and the style we play are a great fit and I would probably have made the same call that the boss made on Saturday, he really shows he is a true gentleman.

I hope he either gets a lot of playing opportunities or that for his own sake, he leaves. Sadly Dimi, at this point it makes me ashamed that this team and this style is not good enough for your class.

  96. The Truth And Nothing But The Truth says:

De gea , Young, who is the third signing do you guys think?

  97. wayne says:

does anyone know what the stat is little pea scoring as sub as compared to starter.i never thought he should start ahead of berba and seemed to have his best games as sub or am i dreaming that and before anybody jumps on me i was saying that all season nothing to do with cl final.

  98. The Truth And Nothing But The Truth says:

so im a nutter because i share the same opinion as Sir Alex?
I guess he is a nutter too?

Or maybe the people who disagree with us are nutters ? Yes that makes more sense.

  99. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

    I love you Dimitar Berbatov.

His disappointment at not even being in the squad is very understandable. I feel for him when he says the word ashamed. He’s set high standards for himself, you can see the amount of pressure he puts on himself on the pitch just by reading his expressions.

I will always respect and love any United player that respects and loves Manchester United. Always.

Late to the partay but HAPPY BIRTHDAY LITTLE PEA!

  100. supertramp says:

Difficult to believe so many ppl here are slagging off Berba and Owen. Is this really ROM or EOTK?

  101. HarambeeRed says:

Ive been a staunch reader of Rom for a long time now, only that this is my first post.i think berba deserves better treatment by united fans from the way he chose united over shitty to his contributions to make no.19 a reality.i’ve been in love with united for a very long time yet i havent been to the uk(not my choosing though) some posts are just annoying coming from fellow reds, isnt united supposed to be a global name?does it mean that u only have to live in manchester to understand what mufc is?sorry guys but the post about Dimmy’s fans being foreign was ill advised, afteral we are all but a big red family.

  102. StatesideAussie says:

Well, if he does go, there can’t be any silly arguments about whose idea it was for him to leave and about whether he’s committed or not. The man’s ability isn’t in doubt. His class isn’t in doubt. His commitment and love for this club aren’t in doubt, either.

I have watched the match against Barcelona again, especially the last 20 minutes or so. As much as I love Hernandez, it is painfully obvious that the Barca defense had his measure. Obviously, we had severe difficulty getting the ball forward, but when we did, they had his measure. Apart from the opening spell, where he saw a bit of the ball but was offside several times, he was unable to get into the game even when the ball did go forward.

In the last few minutes of extra time, we were on the attack. Scholes swings the ball out left to Rooney, who then floats in a looping cross. Hernandez runs in to contest the ball with Pique, but runs in behind Pique, who is 6-7 inches taller than him. Pique barely even jumps off the ground while heading the ball. The Little Pea never stood a chance. Even had he run in front of Pique, it’s hard to see how he could have won a one-on-one battle against someone 6-7 inches taller and much bigger/stronger.

Back in March, against Bolton, Sir Alex took Hernandez off and subbed Berbatov on. I think it was a decision that surprised some people at the time. Berbatov, however, did score the late winner. After the match, Sir Alex said he made the move because he felt we needed more height in their penalty box. (In fact, The Berb scored his winner from a low ball, but the point is not what happened, but the details that Sir Alex thinks of.)

The Berb’s height, his physicality (he out-muscled and out-jumped Carragher to score, remember), his ability to take instant control of a ball, to hold on to it under pressure (even for a few moments), his ability to pull something different out of the hat — to surprise the defense, and his proven chemistry with Nani — all those things might have served us very well in the last 15-20 minutes on Saturday. It wouldn’t have been enough, but it would have been something.

  103. Vilhelm28 says:

The manager pretty much decides who stays and who doesnt.

As for United meeting Barcelona again and having a chance at beating them. We wil need quicker feet, faster players who all put in double shifts.

Berbatov amoung others don’t fully fit that mold. But, it could also be fixed with better midfielders. Difficult to know. What I don’t like reading are members on this board saying “ship Welbeck out – keep Berbatov”. Welbeck is a Mancunia, if he continus to develope he could be a one club player. If we want lojal players at United and not rent boys, we need our own talent in our first team.

  104. The Truth And Nothing But The Truth says:

mg what the fuck are you on about?
Berbatovs last big game was against city and he fucked it .

    Did he play against Chelsea?
    Did he play against Arsenal?
wasnt even in sqaud for the final , so yes i think its safe to say that he is not trusted for the big games.
    Blackpool league already won? yes
schalke when we were nearly through ? yes

Do you think i want to have doubts about our record signing?
Of course not, but thats how it goes.

  105. 0161-Jon says:

Wow, got to love how professional the Berb is. Hats off to him!

  106. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

    @Stateside Aussie

Hello fellow Berba appreciator! Agree with you there. Berba gives us extra option, although i don’t think starting him would have made any difference to the result on Sat (since our midfield is all in all the weak link regardless of our strikers on show).i think of him as a ‘linker’ he links the midfield to the front. Controls the ball perfectly and pulls it away well. I’m positive he’ll stay, and we have to use him well. This disappointment could well give us a new Berba next season. He’s said that everything starts from scratch fro July 4th, and that’s the indicator. Slap your detractors across the face Berba.

  107. wayne says:

@Vilhelm i’m all for keeping welbeck but i hope your rentboy statement isn’t aimed at berba, one thing berba isn’t is a rentboy

  108. BerbaGod says:

What a guy! The more he speaks the more I fall in love with the man! The modesty, honesty and integrity of this man should make other players stand up and take notice! *This is Manchester United!* – said like Leonidas in 300.

  109. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

The logic of only local lads will be loyal is flawed. Shocker.

  110. urval87 says:

    @ Stateside Aussie

Top post… Though I agree with most of what you said in hindsight, before the match, if you gave me a choice of who to bring on (assuming only one sub striker) if we needed a goal, given that paucity of chances that one gets against Barca, I would have been more inclined towards Owen who still has the instincts to sniff a half chance and turn it into a goal.

The only trick I think the boss missed on the night and I told my best friend who was watching the match with me, was that without Scholes, the quick distribution of the ball to the wings never happened. Barca defenders had the time to position themselves well before the ball ever came in.

  111. StatesideAussie says:

KingofStretfordEnd … yea, I would not have started Berbatov on Saturday, though if we had to replay the match again this week, I might :-) But I would have had him available for the last 20 or 25 minutes — would have brought him and Nani on at the same time.

urval87 … before the match, I said that Sir Alex would bring on Owen if he wanted “more of the same but with fresher legs”, and Berbatov if he wanted something completely different. What I never imagined was that he would make that choice before the match even started. I assumed he would have both options available but there was only one. If I had considered that possibility before the match, I would definitely have had The Berb available. Owen is very similar to Hernandez — not quite as fast these days, but more experienced. If the idea of using Hernandez had been working (and don’t me wrong, I don’t blame him or Sir Alex that it didn’t), then having Owen available was a good idea. But if it didn’t, then having Owen was a waste. And not having Berbatov available was a tragedy.

  112. urval87 says:

    @ Stateside Aussie

Agree that choosing Owen before the match turned out to be a mistake.A bigger error then was that as Rooney said yesterday on Talksport, Barca sometimes had six guys in midfield with Messi and Villa dropping in and Mascherano coming ahead. We did nothing after half time to change it. Scholesy and Fletch should have come on for Giggs and Hernandez and that would have given us some strength in midfield. Two guys in midfield closing down six also exhausted them that beyond a certain point we were unable to press which led to the Messi and Villa goals.

  113. Paul H says:

The subtext of these remarks could very easily be “I’m not going to be offloaded now, I want to see out the last year of my contract and then go on a free transfer with a big signing on fee thank you very much”

Alternatively, it could just be that he really does want to stay and fight Rooney, Chicharito, Welbeck, Owen and whoever else we might sign for that one or two places in the starting line up.

    H’mmm.

Agree with others that the midfield is the area that requires the focus though. So it is very possible we’ll go into the new season with the five strikers listed above.

  114. Mickjk says:

Brilliant fella. Love that guy. We should feel privledged that a player of his calibre has the desire to stay after being arguably mistreated. The guy is fuckin awesome. I’ll be gutted if fergie shifts him. Nuff said!

  115. berbatunday says:

thanks park life, saves me the thought f changing my username, phew! glad he is staying though, and much competition for space up front, macheda must be loaned out again and mame diouf hmmn

  116. howie says:

I have seen this quite a few times last season, and I kindda like it. Why don’t SAF try putting the three strikers on the first 11 ? Berbatov is such a good anchor up front (especially during counters) and he has excellent one-two touch passes. Putting in the 3 strikers will also lift some pressure off Berbatov. Rooney can cover the hole in midfield if needed be since he likes to be everywhere anyway. With Berbatov and Rooney precise passing, I’m sure Hernandez/Nani/anyone will bag quite a few goals for us.

    just my 2 cents

  117. howie says:

and also, this suits Berbatov who doesn’t like to run much…

  118. Berbatov's Love Life says:

    @ Saad

I love Hazard, I think he is the best young prospect in football and can play wide or in the middle, looks shockingly like Messi when I watch him (in full matches, not just youtube videos) but every time i mention him he never picks up momentum on this blog, I am not sure why, I just hope he doesnt end up at Arsenal.

What are thoughts an Ganzo, I hear he is class but haven’t seen much of him, I know he plays an attacking midfield/playmaker role but haven’t heard him mentioned with us??

  119. united4ever says:

    GOOOOOO PLEASE

  120. Costas says:

    @MG

3-5-2? Maybe this is what works best against them. But we couldn’t just pull it out of the hat for this one game if we haven’t used it on a regular basis. It could have been disastrous or a stroke of genius. It was best that we went with what brought us there. I would have started with a 4-5-1 in hindsight though.

    @Paul H

I’d like to think it’s the latter. But he has a lot to do if he is going to take back his spot from Hernandez. It’s not just about those two though. It’s also how the rest of the team works around each player that could make up Fergie’s mind.

Anyway, I do feel there’s a chess game going on here. From both parties. Maybe we want him to stay at the club, but on different terms. Berb is playing his hand well thus far if I may say.

  121. Nina says:

this guy is awesome, I love him! I feel ashamed that a guy with such an attitude like him, with his playing skill, his talent can be so badly treated as a member of a football team he has given quite a lot to. He fought to come to this club, and he has worked so hard this season I’d be sad to see him go. I love his spirit, and I’m glad he is staying! Long live Berba at man united!!

  122. gaurav12931 says:

people talk about him not fitting into the current scheme of things……has everyone forgotten what he has done for the team when it was required the most!!….rooney and chicha combination is awesome and i luv it….but god forbid one of them gets injured then in berba we have the perfect fallback guy…..i would prefer berbatov to michel owen anyday when it comes to starting and influencing games…..Dont forget this guy is class and is capable of producing classi goals and passes that leave all of ur mermerised!!…..

    GO BERBA!!!!!!

  123. Denise Williams says:

Right time for a few home truths.here. Whilst I understand Berba is a big favourite with some of you there is absolutely no need to abuse and insult other players while defending him. Football is a team game and all players are important. So cut the name calling and abuse. Costas you are always on here giving your opinions and fair enough you are entitled to but GhostViking is also just as entitled to his opinions as you are. Cut the nonsense and please don’t lets start pulling the race card. Just because GhostViking has a different opinion to you does not make him a racist. Personally I had enough of that rubbish from Lewis Hamilton over the weekend with reading it here.

One more thing who is the manager Fergie or you people. I hate to disapoint some of you but I have more faith in Fergies opinion than yours. He is infinitely better qualified to judge players abilities that anyone. So please allow Fergie to do his job. If Fergie decides to offload Berba there is nothing you can do about it anyway and I don’t think having Owen on the bench and not Berba was a mistake. That is my opinion but ultimately Fergie makes the final decision. I read one comment saying that if Fergie ever chose Owen over Berba again he would want us to lose. That is an utter disgrace and people like that clearly do not support the club anyway.

  124. MrKirie says:

YES! this saved my day! Just failed my neruroanatomy exam, fucking Hungarians, Next try will be golden! Love that Berba is staying. Better touch than Messi, if we just play to his strenghts., I Love this man, even have his jersey (yes, the one we lost the final in)

Next time pay attention to the conversation better Denise Williams.

    1) GhostViking came here and called people deluded first. Go back and check it out at 12:09.

    2) You don’t like it when people badmouth Owen. Read some of his “constructive critisism” on Berbatov at 12:09.

    3) He said at 12:27 and I quote, “I’d bet most of the berbalovers be foreign”. That’s not racism at all right? It’s not about having a different opinion. It’s about bringing up someone’s origins to validate your comment. That’s crap and it has no place here. Not to mention stupid, since I’ve see a lot of United fans from England and Manchester that like Berbatov.

Next time you don’t like someone’s opinion, don’t put words in their mouth and learn to observe both sides of the coin. Thanks for coming.

  129. Gaffer says:

The first good news after Scholesy left. Must agree with all of you who praises Berbatovs attitude. This is the kind of players that makes Manchester United.

  130. Freedom of speech says:

  131. DonLuckyLuciano says:

How can some United fans even doubt Berba for his top season?
How can some United fans not even appreciate for what he have done for the club?
Have people forgot what he did against the scousers?

Berba is one of the big reasons why we are celebrating our 19th title.
Cant understand why some fans hate some of our players… I love all the players, dont matter, they play for United.

If hes going to be sold, then its a fucking shame. Berbatov loves United! Its not fair at all. I believe that Berba wants to end his career her at United.
Dont forget that he did sign for us and said fuck off to city.

    Dont hate, appreciate.
    One Love

  132. Freedom of speech says:

Commenting that most on here who love berbatov are foreign is an observation. Nothing more, I may be wrong.
By the way my mate called it right , he said berbatov would be in a suit in the final.
He is 22 only a lil kid but he knows more about football than some here.

Thanks for insulting me by the way Nut,
I like the way you juddge someone you have never spoken to before.

Did Berbatov have 7 chances against bpool and miss all of them yes or no?

  133. abusaud says:

Maybe the reason SAF left Berba off the CL Final team is because Berba would not have been effective against Barcelona. Barca play fast and swift, something that Berbatov would have trouble with. SAF had to pick players who would be effective against the playing style of Barcelona, which Berbatov was not.

  134. Freedom of speech says:

How can anyone blame the little Pea, when posesion of the ball was almost 70% for Barcelona??? it clearly tells you on what side of the field the game was played!! Rooney defending and fighting in the midfield to regain the ball, left the Pea BY HIMSELF playing point against 4 world defenders that have won the champions league before.. Berbatov, would have done just about the same as Hernandez..

I do believe we are a very solid 2nd place, its just that at the moment, it feels like its still a loong way from the 1st.

i strongly belive if daniela de rossi leaves roma we will get him
he has only 1 year left on his contravt so we can get him for 20-22 million
and also i think we will get de gea young and rodwell
it will be fantastic if we can get these guys as they will be available at realistic prices

  152. ALEX THE GREAT says:

Hi,to everyone.I read your posts and can’t believe how can you criticise the boys, anyone. They’ve all got qualities in abundance but the problem was getting those qualities to win us the game, the only problem was we didn’t get much time on the ball,I don’t doubt Sir Alex The Great but was expecting more of him at least two or three shapes and the reality is He kept the formation the way we started.I’ve been saying to all my mates that if we played 4-6-0 the way As Roma played with Totti,no4 would’ve been easily achieved and at the same time play most of our midfielders and have a bench with strikers not with midfielders, even Sir Alex said the important battles will be won or lost in midfield. If we stuffed our midfield Barsa would be playing the carousel in their own half impotent and they would be there for the taking because they would need to all come out to be able to have a chance to score.I adore Sir Alex but he needed to be bolder and more exotic as when he played 6defenders vs Arsenal I think that’s the gentleman trying to go out on a good note.
P.S was very scared to see Sir Alex’s hands shake very violently with 10mins.to go,fuck the final don’t wanna lose that man,I’ve allmost started crying worrying for him

  153. sachu says:

Berbatov is such a bad footballer, he had the chance to join Man Shitty for Higher Wages But the Beautiful Man picked us. WHY?? Also he says he loves the club?? yeh sure so does Solskjaer doesn’t make him anymore liked within United

The Worst Thing Of All Is That Hes Scored The Most Equaliser/Winners this Season, i think its poor 9 but doesn’t that Mean Berbatov Being In The Team Guarantees the team needing to equalise or win with him on it. Use LOGIC if he is SOLD We Wont Need To Rely on Him for goals, assists, depth in striking areas.

  155. Warwick says:

Berba’s like marmite – love him or hate him. I think we owe our 19th to him – no doubt, along with nani, when several players went missing on the pitch for first half of season. delighted he wants to stay. Get that jar of marmite open!!

  156. Zibbie says:

In the US there has been free agents in sport for 35 years now. So my feelings when it first started was why leave the club and so on. Then realized it was big business and the owners had slaves or indentured servants in the players, and the owners were making all the money. That stunk give it to the players like all other entertainment business’s. Movie stars, rock stars ect.
Players move for money, weather, location, and big clubs. Man Utd is in the UK so the tax structures hurt the big money part, the weather in Manchester sucks, ( at least London is London) so you have the Big Club allure. 1 of 4 reasons for players to come to the club. It is a great reason to come. This is a reality.

Yes, he’d be a great back up option to have (variety and all that)- but for his wages, that’s out of the question. We’re not Real Madrid who can have Kaka as a back up and still pay him shitloads. Berba’s wages can easily go to that new, quality centre mid we might be getting.

With owen signing a new deal, and Wellbeck returning (I’m sure of that, SAF has said it many times)- I can’t see a space for Berba.

  160. ALEX THE GREAT says:

as regarding new players,we don’t need any,we’ve got everything that we need, lots of young players coming back from loans, enough experienced players still in the team apart from PIG and if ashley young comes then I only see Obertan leaving with Bebe having a year to prove himself.Looking forward to see Cleverley get enough recognition and time to show his qualities, would be very sorry for Macheda if it ends like that after helping us to no18.The boy’s got potential but front line at Utd and all the games are cut throat,no time for learners.which is a pity

@sachu I’ll be surprised if sir alex spends 40 mill + on anyone guess it depends if he believes the youngsters are ready to step in

  163. NBI Red Onion says:

I can’t see him and Owen staying – none of the youngsters would be able to break through. My view – and I know it;s worth half a p – sell. Berba is divisive for a reason – he is skillful, but inconsistent, insecure and the manager does not rate him highly. SAF puts him fourth despite his goals, that says alot.

I think if an offer comes in Berba will be used as a make weight, he needs to move on, we need 4 competitive strikers not 2 who are automatically on the bench – Owen also being injury prone – and Berba who SAF does not have faith in to get a goal under pressure which is what you want of someone on the bench – ie if you don’t start and can’t score under pressure off the bench then the boss is not using in you in a way you will deliver and 30 million and 100,000 a week is a lot for a bench warmer. Also Berba is a confidence player and he is prone to be insecure, so being on the bench as much as he is means he will not be delivering on the pitch with confidence. Not to be skeptical, but I also doubt he would get the same wages elsewhere.

A Benzema , Henry or a tall Drogba style forward to terrorise defences would be a plus. Versus Barca they were short but we lacked height, strength and pace at the front to bring the ball down in Drogba style and then turn and terrorise the defence.

  164. sachu says:

    @wayne i agree

If you ever see Barca’s team up close you will notice a massive lack of height. Only Pique is anywhere near over 6ft. I agree with NBI Red Onion, sell Berba and get a Drogba style forward who can hold the ball up and turn with it. It was unbelieveable that we never exploited their lack of height. Seriously they are a bunch of midgets.

  167. sachu says:

    @willie

    @GhostViking

Seems to me you’re the type of shallow fan who’s quick to jump on the “sell-the-out-of-form” player bandwagon. Berbatov is useless eh? You went so far as to claim his 20 goals don’t matter? Because its mostly Nani’s and Valencia’s work?? Given Rooney’s form at the first half of the season, would Rooney have converted all the chances that Berba had? How come i don’t see u slagging off Rooney? Shoud we have sold Rooney in January as well? Just cause Rooney was disrupting our play with embarrasing first touches? The stats speak for themselves, that Berba has scored the most WINNING goals for us this season. The most vital contribution to our 19th title is down to our HOME form. And guess just WHO loves scoring at home for us? Sorry for the 101 questions but just take ur time to answer them and then get back to me when u finally (hopefully) realise how deluded u sounded earlier.

RedLife … “sell Berba and get a Drogba style forward who can hold the ball up and turn with it. It was unbelieveable that we never exploited their lack of height. Seriously they are a bunch of midgets.”

Berba is 6ft-2, uses his strength and height well. Earlier this season, he out-jumped and out-muscled Jamie Carragher to score a wonderful headed goal, and while Carragher might be a scouse prick, he’s also a pretty good center back and no lightweight in size or height. In the same match, Berbatov easily shrugged off the attentions of Torres for his first goal, and again, Torres is no midget. Not to mention that if there’s one thing even the Berb’s detractors agree he’s good at, it is holding up the ball.

You’re right, it is unbelievable that we never tried to exploit their lack of height. It is also unbelievable that in the one match-up where they could get a height advantage over us — by using Pique — we allowed them to do that by fielding Hernandez for the entire match. I have already pointed out how easily 6ft-3 Pique was able to deal with high balls when competing against 5ft-9 Little Pea — Pique didn’t even need to jump. Equally unbelievable that the one forward on our team who could have done that best, wasn’t even on the bench.

  186. willierednut says:

ALEX THE GREAT – Where did I say I don’t have faith in the younger players? I would like United to sign a keeper and a central midfielder. These areas need strengthening IMO. And funny enough, the manager says he wants 3 players. He feels the squad needs new blood. I don’t know why you mentioned Torres, so I’ll pass on that one.

  199. StatesideAussie says:

Funny, didn’t see all this Berba-hatred back in the first half of the season, when he was busy laying the foundation for us to win #19. You know, back when WR10 was sticking his finger up at the club and the manager and holding us to ransom, and going to Oregon for a rest; when Hernandez was still finding his feet. After The Berb single-handedly won us the match against the dippers, I don’t recall people coming on here saying “he’s not a big-game player” or “he doesn’t score important goals”. And before anyone leaps in and tells me that the dippers aren’t a big club anymore — hold your tongue. Because that was only the fifth match of the season, so no one knew back then that dippers were on their way to becoming ordinary, before a late-season revival into respectability. In fact, it was that defeat that set the trend for their descent into mediocrity, and The Berb was single-handedly responsible for it. Oh how quickly and easily we forget! Oh, how easy it is to rewrite history!

  204. jellybean says:

Damn everyone’s on this thread, just posted on the other one. I knew Berba would stay unless he was asked to leave. I don’t know why there was such a knee jerk reaction to the Owen contract extension that Berbatov would leave. They have shared the same squad for the last 2 seasons :S

Off topic, just read that Ruud signed for Malaga. They got taken over by some billionaire, didn’t they? Haha tough luck to Blackburn lol.

  205. Sparkz says:

The Young thing baffled me at first, because I don’t rate him ahead of nani and Valencia. But I can sort of see SAF’s thinking, if he does end up signing him. It’s all about versatility in the front line.

Go back to when we won the Double in 2008- the great thing about the Ronaldo-Rooney-Tevez tro was that they could all go out to either flank, second striker, or lone forward. On top of this, nani and Park could also swap flanks with Ronaldo if need be, so the interchange was great.

Last year, we generally played 4-3-3 with Valencia-Rooney-Nani (or at times Park/Giggs). As versatile as Rooney is, SAF was insistent that he would exclusively play up front (due to our lack of players in that position). On top of that, Valencia can only operate on the right. That basically meant we were a bit too fixed and rigid.

This year it’s been a bit more fluid when Rooney plays in the hole, and sometimes switches with whoever the left winger is. If Young comes, don’t be surprised if you see sometimes see a 4-2-3-1 type formation, with a ’3′ of Nani-Rooney-Young all switching around behind Chicha. Throw in someone like Wellbeck who can play as central striker, wide man, or second striker (his best games for Sunderland were when he was playing off Gyan IMO- he’s an extremely intelligent player), Giggsy, Park etc and it could be interesting. Rotation is the name of the game so Valencia will still get chances of course.

  206. ALEX THE GREAT says:

@fergie s the boss n @willierednut ,it’s up to you guys if you think like that ,we’ve got Ando having a proper preseason Fletch anew,Golden Johhny who can play anywhere, attacking midfielder in Scholes mould like Cleverley or Rooney maybe pulling back a bit there are lots of options when barca can even play masch.in centr.def. we doubt our own players when our undoing was the tactical approach. We couldn’t use Chicha’s pace cause we didn’t get time on the ball and it was too much one dimensional only playing through him.As good as Chicha is we would’ve been better with Nani on the wing and Park let to roam between Messi n Xavi, with Roo playing his defensive part and the attacking bit.
P.S please tell me who of Nani,Park,Giggs,Rooney n Toni can’t score in counter attack.Guys no diss we’re all hurt but I trust them fully they got us no19,young is coming to make a better player out of Nani :-D

  207. jellybean says:

The more I think about the Young signing, the more I think it’ll be a good idea. We were desperately short of wingers at a point this season due to injuries and couldn’t play Obertan or Bebe so we obviously need cover. He’ll also provide more of an attacking option than Park and is a decent set-piece taker, something we’ve sorely lacked. I wonder who we’re going to go for in midfield though, Fergie always conducts his transfers in such a ‘cloak and dagger’ manner lol.

  208. youCANTbuyTHISfeeling says:

YAY! He needs to work on his finishing and i reckon a top top season for him and us next year. Top lad! Good to have people like him in the dressing room

  209. Fred says:

@StatesideAussie – Look pal, I can’t speak for anyone else but all I was doing was backing someone up who said Ferguson doesn’t trust him. That Liverpool game seems to be the only big game any of us can remember him playing in in the last two seasons. I’m not dissing the man, he was brilliant this season and I can’t understand why Fergie has frozen him out. Baffling really.

@Costas – aye, Elsa Schneider. We can sign Sean Connery too while we’re at it, junior! ;)

  210. CedarsDevil says:

wayne – you seem confused buddy, must hook you up with a dick head here, I am sure he will help…

Costas – We are not foreigners my friend, we are UNITED… Racist pricks can go and……. finish the sentence

jellybean- How have you been? Missed you here…. Care for a couple of flat liners? :-)

  211. Fred says:

Nice to see people getting on the Ashley Young bandwagon now that he has my endorsement. :D

  212. fergie is the boss says:

ALEX THE GREAT – the midfield was found out on saterday, carrick fletcher are good but not great, anderson I am not convinced same with gibson. Valencia and nani are quality, cleverly where does he play., We tried having rooney drop deep, but unless we have the CM upgraded rooney hernandez or who ever plays there are gonna be useless when we face sides like barca and we will be beaten again, its simple.

  213. Costas says:

    @Cedars

Lol, I like the civilized you.

    @Fred

Great. Now if you only endorse Heskey. :D

  214. CedarsDevil says:

    Fred

You have my endorsement buddy, your posts crack me up!

    Cheers

  215. StatesideAussie says:

Fred, I wasn’t having a shot at you in particular, in fact, I hadn’t even read any of your posts. But as for big games: these days, every match in the PL is a big game — in that none of them (or very, very few) can be taken for granted. As I’ve said before, three years ago, in the Fat Spanish Waiter’s last season with the dippers, they came second in the league and we won — yet that was the year when they had the wood on all of the other three members of the “big four”, beating us twice, beat the rent boys twice, and two draws against The Arse. So why did they come second? Because they consistently dropped points against mid to lower table teams. Some matches have a higher profile than others, for lots of reasons — history, geography, whatever. But in terms of winning the PL, every match these days is “big”.

I’d be the first to admit that The Berb’s greatest value may be in his ability to unlock a massed defense, which is largely what we get when playing lower teams, especially when they come to OT. But unlike others, I don’t dismiss that as a trivial or insignificant or “lesser” thing. Because these days, it’s those matches that hold the key to winning the league. Simple as.

  216. AnomanderRake says:

    @Fred

I dont want Ashley Young. I think he is over-rated and will be available only at an over-inflated price.
Cant see him adding much value.

Also, personally, I hate him. A big cheat, thats what he is.

  217. NBI Red Onion says:

    @ StatesideAussi

Fair comment but I disagree. Berbatov is not that great at keeping possession, he tends to get stuck in corners and by the line and lose the ball and with Barca he would have been surrounded pretty quickly. He can take a ball down, he loses it pretty quickly against good teams.

  218. MG says:

Ashley Young is fucking shit – he can’t do fuck all more than Danny Welbeck can

If he can then I must be fucking warped

Also Berba must be fucking useless – when the going was fucking tough he kept us going – the fact that it was the gaffer’s decision to change tactics and go with Hernandez and that Berba kept the faith means that when so called fans think they have the measure of him then it’s fucking useless

Go ahead take away his goals and we wouldn’t be celebrating history here

    Fucking comical and suicidal

Would Ashley Young have the better of Barca?

Fuck no – that’s not the player we need in midfield – we need playmakers destroyers – engine rooms not fucking wannabes

  219. willierednut says:

ALEX THE GREAT – It’s not just me that thinks like that, It’s the manager also and quite a few on here, I would guess. There is high hopes Pogba, Morrison, Tunnicliffe and Cleverley can make an impression in the first team squad next season. But, that doesn’t mean United don’t need a couple of signings as well. The boss thinks we do and I for one, agree with him.

  220. willierednut says:

I heard Liverpool are still in the running for Young. Hope they get him! :D

  221. Costas says:

If Young joins us, where does that leave Bebe? :(

  222. jellybean says:

Cedars- Hiya. Flatliners are a kind of shot, aren’t they? Haha everytime I got on RoM the last few days I think it was really late and people were asleep :( I’ve been out of the loop. Catch me up, what are we talking about here :D

  223. Fred says:

@StatesideAussie – great points, well made. :) I don’t want to give the impression that I was bashing the Berb at all. If you check my only post about him you’ll see I was only playing devil’s advocate really.

    @Costas & CedarsDevil – LOL! Good stuff. :)

@AnomanderRake – Yeah, well, that’s just like, your opinion, man. ;)

  224. Sparkz says:

Stateside- “I’d be the first to admit that The Berb’s greatest value may be in his ability to unlock a massed defense, which is largely what we get when playing lower teams, especially when they come to OT. But unlike others, I don’t dismiss that as a trivial or insignificant or “lesser” thing. Because these days, it’s those matches that hold the key to winning the league. Simple as.”

Agreed, but as I’ve said- can we afford his wages on a player who more often than not will be used as a back up? Rooney and Chicha will be Fergie’s preferred 2, no doubt. But a 30 year old on close to 100k a week does not make economical sense. Owen is cheaper and probably more happy with a limited role- add that to Wellbeck and one of Macheda/Diouf, and I think we might be covered.

As for your definition of a big game- I can sort of see where you’re coming from, but would you say that the pressure when playing certain teams in the league i.e the teams in and around us, is the same as when playing the lower teams, particularly in a home game?

As an example, I think back to Chelsea at OT last season, (and even City in the cup semi this year) – games where we were without our frontline striker/s, the heat was on in terms of pressure (title/cup final on stake)…..and he didn’t turn up. Not just in terms of goals, but his overall shift.

  225. Fred says:

WTF is this? The anti-Young movement is gathering steam!

  226. NBI Red Onion says:

If all else fails, and we need cash, we can flog Bebe and Obertan to Chelsea or City for 50mn.

  227. StatesideAussie says:

    MG … right on, brother.

I also am not holding my breath waiting for Ashley Young. I hope the boss doesn’t see Young as an important part of his plan for dismantling Barcelona. If he does, then all I can say is that our best plan for Barca is to hope someone else does the job for us so we never have to play them. I mean, when SAF said that, after Saturday, and then Gill and the Glazers said the checkbook was ready, I have to confess, the name “Ashley Young” wasn’t anywhere on the last of names that sprang to my mind when considering who we might buy in order to achieve that.

As for the “buy” versus “build” argument, it will surely be a bit of both. That’s what we’ve done in the past, and here’s no reason to think it will, or should, be different this time. So, starting with the new season, and over the next few seasons, I think we’ll see a combination of some high-profile purchases (plus, maybe, Ashely Young lol) and the academy players coming through. Best way to go, imo.

  228. CedarsDevil says:

jellybean – hello my darling (I hope King Eric does not read this statement!) lol

Cutting the long story short can you tell me how many times he played last season? – how many goals did he score? How many assists?

Then from that can you tell me how many times did he score and assist against who?

Please enlighten me – I thought we needed squad enhancing to beat Barca – I must be living in another alternate universe.

    PMSL! Thanks Cedars!

  242. Saad says:

Anybody here a fan of Aston Villa’s Marc Albrighton?

Albrighton, Bannan, Clark, Delfouneso…Villa have got a great batch of padawans coming thru their ranks.

I like Barry Bannan too. Good player.

  243. Fred says:

@MG – I can get those stats for you, sure thing. Let me tell you something now: Ashley Young can be our Messi.

  244. NBI Red Onion says:

Basically Berbatov is like a porn star you watch and drool at.

Then you get the porn star and bring them home.

At the start nothing much happens, the porn star seems nervous and slouches on the sofa, a little unbother, disappointed you get some drinks and talk about the cool posters in your bedroom of Giggs and Scholes, hinting hard.

Finally! It happens, the porn star drags you in the room and does it 5 TIMES!!! Wow, the moves, your head almost explodes! Yes you think – this is it.

The next day, you feel good, you get an orange juice, sit with the lady and pat her on the thigh and say, come on – slowly she follows you into the bed room, you dim the lights and trun around, destracted by a whistling sound – she is fast asleep snoring. You cannot wake her. When you finally wake her, she just lies there and does her nails, but night after night, you stare at your posters of Giggs and Scholes and sigh, but you keep on at it because that memory of that one night which you hope will be repeated…occassionally, you cry,

  245. Ryandunny says:

With Berba more likely staying and Owen signing a new deal… where does it leave Welbeck

Surely he deserves a chance in the first team?

  246. Costas says:

    @Saad

I liked Albrighton from what I saw last season. Maybe more than Young. I saw more potential there.

  247. Fred says:

They have, Saad. I seem to remember their reserves giving ours an absolute walloping this season. They also beat Arsenal’s reserves 10-1! :-0

  248. Saad says:

Barry Bannan is very highly rated as a pass-master. United should seriously consider getting him. He’s only 21.

  249. Fred says:

@NBI Red Onion – yep, we’ve all been there pal!

  250. jellybean says:

Is this Fred the Red taking some downtime from wearing a hot devil suit?

  251. Fred says:

  252. CedarsDevil says:

    Fred

You are so wrong, Young will be a combo of Pele, Maradona and Law combined, you have your stats wrong there buddy….

Still cannot believe that some are not getting the humor of your posts!

  253. jellybean says:

By hot I mean it looks very warm in that thing lol. The only person to don a hot devil suit was Liz Hurley. Or hot college chicks on Halloween…

  254. MG says:

    Fred – two things

When you cannot tell me what Ashley Young has done for Villa last year yet he’s good enough for United – I apologise for the way I respond to you – but that’s fucking immature and bollocks.

Secondly Danny Welbeck is equal or better than Ashley Young – the kid can play up front as Steve Bruce used him or on the wings – that’s how he has been drilled at United

Thirdly Ashley Young equals Messi? At that point you lost your argument hands down

The fact that I consider Xavi to be the best player in the world is one thing – but Ashley Young couldn’t even lace up Messi’s one boot let alone dictate and kill a game like he can.

Football Manager does not equate to real life – sorry for the blast – but I know I’m right because I know exactly how Ashley Young has fared – and he’s not up to it.

  255. Costas says:

  256. MG says:

  258. Fred says:

    @MG – LMFAO! I missed that! :lol:

MG … I have to think Fred was kidding when he used that line about Young = Messi. Only StevieMe uses lines like that and is serious about them (Joe Cole = Messi, remember?). Fred, you weren’t serious, were you? Say it ain’t so, Fred!

  262. CedarsDevil says:

jellybean – did you get the combo of that drink?

  263. Costas says:

Of course Fred wasn’t serious. He meant to say Naseri = Messi.

  264. Fred says:

Ashley Young’s career stats can be viewed here: http://www.football-lineups.com/footballer/1896/ Plenty of goals and assists in there, including against the likes of us, Arsenal and Chelsea no less.

@ Fred- Ashley Young is no Messi, he’s CR7. Bale is the Welsh Messi! lol

  274. Fred says:

I’m hearing some very sinister talk on the grapevine that Ashley Young is going to Liverpool, not United. You lot will be thrilled to hear this no doubt!

If it’s true, he must have shit for brains – either that or United never wanted him in the first place, just like the ridiculous Joe Cole rumours last year.

  275. Fred says:

  276. willierednut says:

  277. Ryandunny says:

Ashley Young stats for Aston Villa

    Played: 188
    Scored: 37
    Assisted: 54
    * Important to notice that his strike force for the majority of his Villa career has been Carew, Agbonglahor, Heskey so his assists are impressive. His crosses form a great partnership with the defender Laursen the same could be done with Vidic.

Also Nani hasn’t been as great on the left as he has been on the right. Nani on the right = fantastic player – Nani on the left = average most of the time.

Valencia very rarely uses his left foot. Giggs is going to be used in CM role mostly next season. Park handy for a goal is not the most creative. Cleverley and Welbeck can do a job there but are more effective in their natural positions.

He has a fantastic cross on him… two footed…. quick and can take set pieces.

He can play on the left – the right and in Rooney’s role.

I’m not saying he would be an outstanding signing… but he could turn out to be a very good one.

He’d also be relatively cheap around 15 million. So instead of signing an Alexis Sanchez for about 30 we can sign him and have more funds to buy a quality central midfielder while still improving the squad.

Anyone who thinks that Owen signing a one year contract is going to ruin Welbeck’s United career is off their trolley. Does anyone actually believe that Ferguson is going to sacrifice such a great prospect just to keep Michael Owen around. What’s the bloody harm in keeping him around. He doesn’t cause any fuss and he’s got all the experience in the world and is capable of scoring vital goals. This is good news for us and only strengthens our squad for next season. Let’s not forget that Welbeck has been deployed quite a bit on the left side of midfield for Sunderland. There’s room in the squad for Rooney Hernandez Berbatov Owen and Welbeck. I’ve said it a million times before, if Welbeck is good enough he will get his chance to prove it and he will have a long United career, if he’s not good enough then he’ll have a career somewhere else. Who at the start of the season would have thought that Hernandez would be starting a European Cup final for us in May. He kept producing the goods until he proved himself too good to be left out. The same will apply to Welbeck.

With the great one retiring does anyone think there’s any use in us putting in a massive bid for Fagregas?

I know he seems to have his heart set on Barcelona but maybe it’s worth testing the waters. I mean if Real Madrid can get Figo off Barcelona then surely anything is possible.

  294. Fred says:

Byron, although Fabregas would be a sensational signing, he probably feels as though he belongs back at Barca with all his bum chums like Pique, Messi and Busquets. Arsenal would not sell him to us either. No chance whatsoever of him coming here.

  295. Che's Red Reaction says:

OK, lads… After 7 hours of boredom at office, I am here with my unofficially official Manchester United 2011-12 line up.

De Gea (I wanted Stekelenburg, thats how it is, need to deal with this spainard, 2nd choice Lindegaard)

rafael, vidic, rio, evra (2nd choice- O’shea, evans, smalling, fabio)

Valencia, Carrick, Nani (2nd choice – Cleverly, one left winger, giggs, one holding mf, gibson, fletcher, fabio)

Rooney (2nd choice – I dont know, one more signing? anderson?, Gibson?)

Berba, chicha (2nd choice – Owen, wellback, Rooney?)

Rotate according to the PL, CL, games…. for CL, Rooney + Ando in the hole n chichrito away n berba home upfront…

    more importantly –
    - Play berbatov consistantly n he will give you lots of goals.
    - Stop considering rooney as striker n allow him to develope as excellent passer of the game, a one who can control the game + can score, just like scholes used to do, only that Rooney can give greater work rate.
    - Beat fucking barcelona next time, dont go hiding like we did twice in last two games… they are not gods… just pass the fucking ball 8 times in their half n they will concede the goal, just like they did last weekend. start believing that you can beat barcelona n you WILL beat them.

  296. jellybean says:

@ Fred and Cedars- you two may actually hv smth there lol. He was tweeting abt how he was playing Villa in training, and whaddya know? Villa starts on the right in the final instead of the left where he’s been playing all season for Barca. Damn that Scouse double agent lol!

    - I’ve stopped drinking, but only while I’m asleep.

    NBI Red Onion

Love the analogy about Berbatov and the pornstar. Think you’ve got issues mate.

Anyway, enough about porn and lets talk about football. I posted after the CL final that Sir Alex was showing a ruthless streak designed to hurt and undermine the confidence of a loyal and unassuming player who despite his laid back style has undoubted natural ability that when executed, can leave the supporters awestruck.
The decision to sign Owen on a one year contract today as well as the recalls of Welbeck and Macheda make me more convinced than ever that Berbatov is being reluctantly pushed out and is being lined up as a bargaining chip for the Manager’s summer transfer targets.
That is all well and good as in the manager we trust but if this is the case lets have a little more transparency. I personally believe Fergie has got a real bee in his bonnet about the two chances Berbatov missed in the semi against City, albeit the first one was denied by a world class save by Hart.
I have a few theories based on Dimitar’s market value of £8million based on the length of his current contract. Please feel free to take the piss and comment on them if you think I am talking shite.

    1. Berbatov part ex. Ashley Young.Young can play through the middle, has pace, power and might free Rooney up to play in a Paul Scholes type role given his range of passing, positional sense and vision.
    2. Berbatov part ex. Modric. Spurs fans would love him back and would deflect a lot of the shit that would be aimed at Daniel Levy for selling Spur’s best players.
    3. Berbatov and Carrick part ex. Modric. Not too much cash outlay. Would allow funds to pick up a quality midfielder to complement Modric. Would love to think Schneider but fear that City will outbid us on any Marquee players.
    4. Berbatov straight swap Joey Barton. (I can hear you all laughing!). Since Keane left we have never had anyone in Midfield who can seriously leave his foot in.Barton was on Fergie’s radar before he kicked fuck out of someone in a MacDonalds in Liverpool and got sent to prison. Gets stuck in, great passer.great shot and good in a fight. Big Sam said he was one of the best professionals he ever managed. Berbatov was also a Newcastle supporter in Bulgaria when he was a kid and would love going back to the ‘Big fish,Small pond’ mentality that made him so prolific at Spurs.

My comments are based on the belief that there is not as much cash available for transfers as the club would have you believe. The recalls of Welbeck and Macheda are either genuine attempts by the club to get them back in training to see how much they have progressed or to let them know they are now up for sale. Welbeck will prosper in the Premier League. Macheda opted to go back to Italy and play slower football so he can fuck off and be sold.

    @Fred and everyone else …

    Re: Ashley Young.

He may be good. He may be impressive. But I dont think we need him. Especially not for that kind of money we will have to pay for him.
We have enough wingers on either side. And enough players who play behind the striker and link-up play.

For sure, Ashley Young would be a good addition to the squad BUT not at the price he is valuated at.

I would use the same argument against Alexis Sanchez., who is a whole LOT better than Young.

In fact, I would generalize that argument and say that we dont need anymore wingers. Plenty of cover and plenty of youth prospects waiting on the fringes.
Its the middle of the pitch we need to concentrate on. Someone to retain and dictate posession, with a good workrate will do.

Also, Ashley Young is a stinking cheat :P

  305. StatesideAussie says:

Sparkz … missed your post, way earlier. What I mean about “big games” is that the PL is a tough fight these days. Of the 38 matches in a season, it’s no longer enough to worry about winning the handful of games that you have to play against the other “major contenders”, you have to worry about them all. In the context of winning the league, every match is “big”. A match against a lower-half team might not have the prestige and history of a match against the rent boys, the arse, the dippers or shitty — but it is absolutely “big” in terms of winning the title. The lower teams in the PL have become crafty and adept at what i call ‘survival football”. They’ve figured out that beating the other teams around them is difficult, so if they can scrap a few points — a draw here and there against the major teams — that may just make the difference between survival and relegation at the end of the year. And they’ve figured how to do that. I mean look at this year — the number of teams in realistic danger of relegation going into the last two weeks was fucking extraordinary, man. What was it, 7 or 8 teams all within 3 ooints of each other? Wow.

This is a totally different situation to what happens in other leagues (with the possible exception of Germany). Sir Alex himself has said, there are no easy matches anymore in the premier league. And what’s noticeable is that in order to beat those lower teams, the tactics and styles that you have to use are really very different to what you use against the bigger teams, or in Europe. So to me, it makes no sense to say, as some do, that Berbatov isn’t worth it because he’s only effective against those teams, like a flat-track bully. First of all, I don’t think that’s true. But even if it is, that makes him extremely valuable. STR pointed out that Berbatov scored 7 winning goals for us this year — 21 points. Others have responded, “yeah, but those were all against lower teams”. And you yourself said, is that worth 100 grand a week? My answer is: fucking oath it’s worth 100 grand a week, because without that, our chances of winning the PL each year are slim to none — and winning the PL is still our main thing.

  306. StatesideAussie says:

Cedars … more George Best quotes:

On David Beckham: “”He can’t kick with his left foot, he can’t head a ball, he can’t tackle and he doesn’t score many goals. Apart from that he’s all right.”

On Kevin Keegan: “He’s been very, very lucky; an average player who came into the game when it was short of personalities.”

“In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol; it was the worst 20 minutes of my life.”

On Cantona: “I’d give all the champagne I’ve ever drunk to be playing alongside him in a big European match at Old Trafford.”

Fred are you on tablets? If not you ought to be after that load of dribble. Owen is not a scouser he was born in Chester and has lived virtually all his life in North Wales. In Flintshire to be precise. As a youngster he supported Everton. So the fact that he played for Liverpool has nothing to do with it. Baerba that you think so much of played for Tottenham so he played for other clubs too. Owen had an awful lot to put up with from the scousers so why should he be considered untrustworthy. Also Owen played for Real Madrid Baca’s biggest rivals so that rather destroys your theory anyway. CedarsDevil you claim to support all United’s players yet then proceed to agree with Fred’s pearls of garbage. Do you understand the word support?

People say ‘he deserves to stay’ or ‘he doesn’t deserve to stay’. Our current crop of players contain quite a few that stayed in the team even though they were ‘undeserving’. Fletch a few years back, Anderson recently, Carrick…

Berbatov for me, needs to stay. This team simply needs some fine tuning and we will conquer Europe. No wholesale changes needed.

Fuck me drunk … yesterday, the rags were all, “Ashley Young’s off to United, so it’s the end for Berba”. Today, they’re all, “Owen got a one-year extension, so it’s the end for Berba”. Bastards just can’t help themselves, can they?

  335. Clint-IamYourPapii says:

Fred,Costas, MG & Cedars…Big Willie ;) What Fucking great entertainment Who Needs arsenal in england when You fellas here at ROM are a bagful of giggles.

    Berba. Sheer Class.

  337. Balaji Sivaraman says:

Damn all you guys. I fucking hate you all. Next time you have a fucking party, invite me. Why does all the fun at ROM only occur during my nap time?

I wake up and come on ROM only for the Berba thread to have increased threefold and find references to Indiana Jones, James Bond and, last but not the least, The Dude.

Fuck all you guys! Ima leaving.

  338. parjo says:

Berba, if you read this, don’t be ashamed, most people know that you’re out of the team because of strategy, it’s not because you are not out of class.

  339. CROoney says:

    noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo !!!!!!!

  340. CROoney says:

lol the game would have been closer in him with the team…who says that he knows shit…he wouldn’t have touched the ball…there’s a reason why he doesn’t play against arsenal and barca

  341. CROoney says:

*who says that, he doesnt know shit

  342. Costas says:

    @parjo

Exactly. But you need to understand football to understand Berbatov. ;)

I believe I do understand the word support very much but thanks for asking… Pity you do not understand the word humor. So do me a favor and never question my support again.

MG & Costas – Cheers buddies

Balaji – Sorry you missed out on all the fun!

    Morning all true REDS

  344. Jig3000 says:

Great skill, great comments, great guy, wrong club.

Really like the man, incredibly indebted to his contribution to our club this season but he’s always been a square peg in a round hole and I think Fergie is going to move him on.

Hope he does well either way, seems a good lad.

  345. Fred says:

@Balaji – Hahahaha! Glad you appreciated those references! :D

  346. nmostonred says:

    @CROoney

Ball retention is key against Barca if only to relieve pressure, Berba and Scholes are unquestionably the 2 in our ranks who are unflappable on the ball. If we were to have had more ball it would have gave them less ball to attack with. As for being closer as a contest well never know, its my opinion.
Pretty much every Red on the train back to Manchester had pretty much the view we were overran in midfield and needed Scholes for Hernandez at half time with Rooney up top. All ifs and buts anyway!
