After plenty of drama, Manchester United secured the signing of Dimitar Berbatov. Given the fact we had months to sort out this transfer, you wouldn’t have thought it would have been as last minute as it was.
United fans mobbed Berbatov as he left Old Trafford at around 12.30am, half an hour after the transfer window had closed. The fact that the bright flash of a camera was seen from inside the office where the contracts were being decided certainly gave United fans hope that the deal had been completed in time, but there was still no confirmation.
With Spurs claiming we didn’t have permission to talk to the player and a complaint to the Premier League already in place, there were fears the deal could be pulled at the last moment.
However, our new number 9 is here, and he says it is a dream move for him.
“Joining United is a dream come true,” he said. “I look forward to playing my part in helping this club win more honours.”
Sir Alex Ferguson was equally pleased with the situation, happy to finally land his man. “This is a key signing,” he said. “Dimitar is one of the best and most exciting strikers in world football. His style and ability will give the team a different dimension and I’m sure he will be a popular player with the fans.”

Well done S.A.F and the Board,
And am sure Rooney is the most happiest
UTD paid too much for a 28-year old. No question about that. But SAF must have seen Berbatov as the now-proverbial “last piece in the puzzle”.
The Glazers are calculating gamblers – not wild, crazy spenders. SO, when you connect the dots between this signing and the absolute refusal to countenance Ronaldo’s transfer to Madrid earlier this summer then I think it is possible to see how SAF is “positioning” this team. SAF has obviously sold the owners’ into his plans for a repeat of last year’s success – but with the likelihood of making the run-in easier and the wins more dominant. AND, given the size of the debt, it is damned-near imperative for UTD to win, win, win.
Clearly, this year’s team is stronger than the 07/08 double-winners. And the opposition is only marginally stronger. So the opportunity is there for UTD to run the table – forgetting, of course, the little banana-skin in Monaco last week !
I was hoping that the Berbatov-transfer noise was a smoke-screen and that the primary target was Karim Benzema – and I am sure that IF that would have been possible then even more money would have been spent last night. However, getting Berbatov will be a nice, short-term stop-gap move. I don’t doubt that he should make both Rooney and Tevez better since they can play their more “natural” roles/positions. And, Berbatov’s presence probably means that opponents will not be able to double-team Ronaldo and we have seen that he thrives on space/time.
Since UTD’s attack has sputtered on occasion – and too often on big occasions – this signing should go a long way towards making the “NewUTD” a very formidable assembly of talent. It’s up to SAF to get the parts functioning as a single unit. And who would doubt his ability to do that ?
I think Queiroz s loss is being overlooked too easily..
We all forgot about the need for a new #2…
