UTD paid too much for a 28-year old. No question about that. But SAF must have seen Berbatov as the now-proverbial "last piece in the puzzle".

The Glazers are calculating gamblers - not wild, crazy spenders. SO, when you connect the dots between this signing and the absolute refusal to countenance Ronaldo's transfer to Madrid earlier this summer then I think it is possible to see how SAF is "positioning" this team. SAF has obviously sold the owners' into his plans for a repeat of last year's success - but with the likelihood of making the run-in easier and the wins more dominant. AND, given the size of the debt, it is damned-near imperative for UTD to win, win, win.

Clearly, this year's team is stronger than the 07/08 double-winners. And the opposition is only marginally stronger. So the opportunity is there for UTD to run the table - forgetting, of course, the little banana-skin in Monaco last week !

I was hoping that the Berbatov-transfer noise was a smoke-screen and that the primary target was Karim Benzema - and I am sure that IF that would have been possible then even more money would have been spent last night. However, getting Berbatov will be a nice, short-term stop-gap move. I don't doubt that he should make both Rooney and Tevez better since they can play their more "natural" roles/positions. And, Berbatov's presence probably means that opponents will not be able to double-team Ronaldo and we have seen that he thrives on space/time.

Since UTD's attack has sputtered on occasion - and too often on big occasions - this signing should go a long way towards making the "NewUTD" a very formidable assembly of talent. It's up to SAF to get the parts functioning as a single unit. And who would doubt his ability to do that ?

Bring on the dippers. Soft-Arse Gerrard will be glad not to be involved because United are going to EVISERATE THEM Ha ha ha
P.S. I know we paid a lot of money for the Berbmeister, but read all the comments from fans of other clubs (especially spurs) on the various blogs. Funny. There's only us smiling after yesterday (Oh and Citeh, but they're all on glue)
