Well, Busby certainly played for a great team..

  2. redscouse says:

couple of points; Carras on record as saying he admires Ferguson and utd and for the record we dont have half-a-dozen anti man u songs which we sing every week! perhaps at little humilty is due the east end of the ’62′ eh as I cant recall to many compliments heading this way from anyone at utd about argueably, at least, the most successful English side ever

  3. hugo_reds says:

Yeah, honnest words from another great manager of english football. One thing to remind Manchester United fans / Sir Matt Busby played for Liverpool FC ! He learnt the culture of football in the City of the Beatles. And it’s great one player left Liverpool FC and turned Manchester United to one of the biggest club in the world. Great achievement…

  4. JaseFace says:

Why wouldn’t we praise one of our own? He was Liverpool’s Matt Busby before he was united’s. In the same way that most, if not all, Liverpool fans applauded when Sir Matt led United to the first Eurpoean cup won by an english team.

There’s a reason why we’re the most knowledgeable footie fans in the world. Would an away team goalie get a standing ovation by your shower? If you had lost the title in 89 from an injury time goal, would you have given Arsenal a standing ovation? No, you’d have streamed out of the stadium in your thousands.

I’ve been both gracious and honest; I know very few United fans who’d be willing to do the same.

  5. Joff says:

I take it you are the same honest & gracious fans that rolled out the Killers banner at Old Trafford when we played a couple of weeks ago then???

  6. jon jonson says:

    salute to the greatest ever!

  7. MARK A MURPHY1 says:

bill shankly was an honest man and most lfc fans would have agreed at the time as he was an ex player for liverpool also..
unfortunately you have stated something that you wouldnt know the answer to but i dont know many liverpool fans who would have a bad thing to say about sir matt.
i think your bitterness has got in the way of an honest quote which would be backed up by a lot of people in merseyside and the blue half of manchester
but would manu fans admit that shankly and then paisley were two of the greatest managers ever,im not so sure.

we have to admit that ferguson is the best modern day manager but he still hasnt equalled bob paisleys trophy haul.

  8. jobo says:

haha – can anyone else see the double meaning in the heading ?

  9. franco says:

Shame you had to use this as a pathetic attempt to discredit Liverpool fans. Anyone would think you were obsessed or even worse worried about us. For the record as a LFC fan of over 40 years I have never heard any Liverpool fan say a bad word about Sir Matt. That’s because he was a man of dignity and honour who knew the importance of being gracious in the face of defeat as well as victory.

  10. the king says:

ha ha good one……thats the best april fools day prank i have heard in ages!…….ps two words….BOB PAISLEY!

  11. Stephen says:

    Two words, fuck off.

  12. jakethelad says:

Sir Matt was Liverpool captain and a great servant to our club. Yes he possibly was the greatest manager ever lived. Who am I to argue with the great Bill Shankly- but you have to ask yourself, where did he learn his great talents..anfield..yes manchester..you can thank us for giving you a football club worthy of support.

  13. Shanklyboys says:

I am a lifelong red and have huge respect for Matt Busby. It was Matt that brought the great Billy Liddel to our club. For that alone he is a heroe.

  14. bradh05 says:

Well what did you expect; once you were a former liverpool captain you are always meant for greatest even if its with you guys.

  15. SirRoger says:

I have to tip my hat to Sir Matt. He was an incredibly forward thinking man, getting Manchester United involved in Europe, and building them the way he did.

The greatest ever? Well, if Shanks thought so, then you’d have to give it serious consideration.

Busby was the captain of Liverpool when Paisley signed as a young player from Bishop Auckland in 1939 and immediately took the new arrival under his wing. When war was declared Busby was among several Anfield players who joined the King’s Liverpool Regiment.

Liverpool decided to make Busby club coach but before he could take up the appointment at the end of the war, United offered him their vacant manager’s job and Liverpool chairman Billy McConnell persuaded the board to release him.

  16. Stephen says:

Well thats me sold, what a load of bollox, you are now getting desperate why don’t you have a days holiday in Liverpool next March 14th, sad wankers.

  17. Albie says:

Scott – you last line does you a disservice – Busby, as a former captain of Liverpool is rightly revered by LFC. He was a great manager. There’s no point descending into petty interclub squabbles. Grow up.

“Busby joined Liverpool for £8,000 from Manchester City in March 1936 and was immediately made captain. He led the team with distinction under new manager George Kay but as with many players at the time found the peak years of his career lost between 1939 and 1945. On declaration of war Busby was among several Anfield players who immediately signed up with the King’s Liverpool Regiment.

Just prior to the war Busby was to meet a man who would remain a close friend throughout his life, Bob Paisley. Paisley was signed as a young player from Bishop Auckland in May 1939 and immediately taken under the wing of his captain. Paisley said of him “He was a man you could look up to and respect. He’d played the game and people like him weren’t solely tied down with tactics, which was a valuable lesson for me”.

As the war came to a close and football returned to the national agenda Liverpool offered Matt a position as club coach but before he could take up the appointment Manchester United offered him their vacant manager’s job and Liverpool chairman Billy McConnell persuaded the Reds’ board to release him.”

Salute to Matt Busby great manager, made by his time at Liverpool FC. I beleive Paisley Came after Shankley and was a lot better though.

The all have a picture of the fat Spanish twat in their wallets, they havn’t won a trophy since 2006 and that was against West Ham on penalties!

its a man united blog ya’s nuts

google liverpool blog and go nuts

good words from Sir Bill Shankly there

oh wait thats not his name

    april fool

  22. invertedquestionmark says:

I’ve been an United fan since childhood and I hold nothing but respect for Bill Shankly. It’s a shame that Liverpool have consistently been becoming a disgrace since his era.

  23. Popeye says:

Jobo he was a Liverpool Legend (read below)

Franco you are correct, no Liverpool fan would say a bad word against Matt Busby because he was a Red and Team Captain (1936-39) long before he went to manage Man Utd. He probably would have gone on to be a Liverpool manager if he didn’t have different footballing ideas compaired to the board (Hmmm sounds like the recent USA/Rafa spat).

Whilst, Liverpool fans will always show respect to Sir Matt Busby, who is without doubt a legend, Man Utd should show less ignorance to the achievement of the greatest manager of all time, Bob Paisley ! Whilst Fergie is trying he hardest to match his record, it has taken him nearly 3 times as long so far and he’s still a European Cup short therefore, SAF can never be the greatest manager.

Paisley (9 years = 6 titles, 3 Euro Cups, 1 UEFA, 3 League Cups, 1 Super Cup, 5 Charity Shields) what would he have achieved in the next 14?????

SAF (First 9 years = 3 titles, 3 FA Cups, 1 League Cup, 1 UEFA, 1 Super Cup, 3 Charity Shields).

Before you Man Utd fans get upset, that it is not to pour scorn on SAF achievements, he is the virtually the most successful manager in most respects, but not the greatest.

SO WHO IS THE GREATEST………The truth is probably none of them. In a strange twist of fate, most would not have been successful without the others existance, influence, friendship, admiration etc etc etc! Busby admired Shankly, Paisley learned from Shankly, Busby took Paisley under his wing at Anfield, Shankly respected Busby’s ethos, Fergie followed Busby’s example as Dalglish followed Paisley’s.

Shankly, Busby, Paisley, Ferguson, they were/are all great in their time but their achievements cannot be truly measured in terms of silverware. They were all great servants and they made the people happy, that is all that really matters. Paisley would not have achieved so much if Shankly hadn’t laid the foundations, Likewise, Paisley did it for Dalglish. Busby laid the building blocks for Man Utd, it just took 20 years to find a manager who could fill the shoes and benefit from them.

  24. Scott the Red says:

Albie – grow up? It’s not a petty squabble. If you saw how many comments on a daily basis I had to delete from Liverpool fans, laughing about the Busby Babes dying in Munich, then you would understand why my opinion is the way it is. Your fans were singing about Munich three weeks ago in the concourses at OT (I’m sure you, like me, saw the videos on YouTube). I’m not being petty, I’m simply saying things as I see them. Most Liverpool fans wouldn’t say Sir Matt was the greatest and many Liverpool fans mock the crash that so very nearly took his life and did take the life of others. That’s fact, not opinion, or immaturity.

Joff – just because John Smith claimed it wasn’t you, everybody else knows those 39 Italians died because of Liverpool fans. Are we being honest by calling them murderers? Yes.

You could just tell Scott and the owners of this site to stop it being posted on Liverpool Newsnow and the Liverpool fans would stop posting here, – Too sensible?

Sir Matt was a Brilliant , Brilliant Manager and a great Man , and too use his name like this is a terrible shame on this site.

  30. NickOGS20 says:

Really don’t see the point in this post, or at the very least the last line of it. Reads as bitter and frankly quite obsessed.

  31. Liverpool_Andy says:

    @ Scott The Red,

Please dont delete this comment, as i am offering a counter view to what you are saying in your last post…

I totally disagree with any fellow Liverpool Fans mocking the Munich tradgedy, its sick and wrong no arguments from me there…. But you have to expect some sick retalliation from our moronic fans when you have your moronic fans waving flags that say ‘murderers’. It would have been nice if you included that detail when putting Liverpool down ala your previous comment.

sure if you ‘youtubed’ that you find that on there too!

  34. Tom F says:

Sir Matt Busby lead an English team in to Europe for the first time, against the wishes of the FA and with the initiative and vision that nobody before had even contemplated.

He re-built Manchester United after the war and again after Munch 58, So he didn’t only change a club, he changed the English game. Not many managers can say they did that.

    Forever and Ever…

newcastle has named that prick to be there next manager

am i wrong in saying thats 4 managers in 1 season

  40. Scott the Red says:

Andy – so because we reminded Liverpool fans of the people they killed in the past, we therefore deserve to have songs sung at us about innocent people who lost their lives whilst representing our club? I don’t see your logic.

Had John Smith not blamed Chelsea fans for the loss of those 39 lives and taken the responsibility of it, then there would be little need to talk about it. However, the denial back then and the continued denial by some sections of your support makes it easy for us to confront you with what your fans did.

We call you MURDERERS because your fans killed people. Before you start though, do remember your own fans were singing “2-0 to the murderers” against Everton this season, so you no longer have any moral high ground. Unless you want to argue that people who managed to get tickets for Goodison away in the Liverpool end weren’t “proper” fans lol.

  44. Giles Oakley says:

It’s tragic that there is so much ill-will and hatred between United and Liverpool supporters, something that all the great managers of the past would have deplored, Busby, Shankly and Paisley. It shocks me that there are Munich songs still being sung, especially now I can see that the better educated Liverpool fans do actually acknowledge Matt Busby’s contribution to their own club’s illustrious history. As it happens, that should not matter, no one should be celebrating the deaths of so many people in an air-crash, let alone taunting survivors and relatives. I’ve supportd United since Munich, through thick and thin, sometimes envious of Liverpool’s many successes, always admiring of men like Shankly and Paisley (not forgetting Joe Fagan), occasionally embarrassed by the excesses of United fans, and always happy to get into a bit of banter with friends who happen to support Liverpool, just as I am with City fans, or Arsenal, or anyone (Yes Richard, I know the atmosphere at Luton is ‘fantastic’). I think it’s very fitting that Shankly’s generous words about his very old friend Busby have come to light, and the point he makes about the wreckage of Old Trafford in the Blitz is important. In comparing records, none of these managers had such a poor inheritance as Busby did in 1945, with no ground and no resources. And of course none had to overcome a tragedy like Munich. Paisley was a brilliant manger, no question, but he inherited a well-oiled boot-room regime, with top class players there, already habituated to success, all part ot the Shankly legacy. When Fergie took over United, they were an under-achieving club with great traditions but few trophies to sing about. At that point United weren’t even particularly rich, they just had potential because even in the bad years there was a commitment to attacking, care-free football over decades that no other club in English football history could match, including Liverpool. That meant there were supporters (like me) loyal to a vision of how football should be played, always dreaming of the time when those great ideals would come back to fruition in the form of trophies won. That tradition of going on the attack was created in Ernest Mangnall’s day, before WWI, but it was really Busby who entrenched the ideal into United’ DNA. Dave Sexton was sacked as manager at United in the 70s, not for being unsuccessful, but for not sticking to the attacking principle that is demanded by everyone who has sought to fill Busby’s managerial chair. Forget the Blitz, even forget Munich, what makes Busby the greatest is the philosophy of life he gave expression to in the football teams he sent out play, telling them to ‘Go out and express yourselves, and enjoy it’.

Just a few comments on Bob Paisley.
He inherited a very good team. All he had to do was carry on doing what had been done before.
‘Pool’s greatest ever manager was without a doubt Bill Shankly.
When he took over ‘Pool were a mediocre bunch going nowhere in the 2nd Division. He tranformed the whole ethos of the club and set the scene for their future success. Without Shankly, there would have been no success for Paisley.
And just a reminder to younger ‘Pool fans – no ‘Pool fan can seriously say that a ‘Pool team in the 80s was the best club team in English football history as ‘Pool were in the 2nd Division when the Busby Babes were at their best and very few ‘Pool fans would have seen them ‘in the flesh’. In the mid 50s the only ‘live’ football shown on TV were the FA Cup Finals.
