Can Arsenal Stop Us Scoring At The Emirates? Not Bothered About The Win!

Manchester United don’t have a great record at the Emirates stadium, never winning a match there in the three years since Arsenal moved stadiums.

However, our second leg Champions League semi-final isn’t just any trip to Arsenal. We can go there with the hope of winning, but it isn’t our primary objective. Any score draw will see us in the final as well as a 2-1 defeat.

History is in our favour!

06/07
Arsenal 2 – 1 United

07/08
Arsenal 2 – 2 United

08/09
Arsenal 2 – 1 United

Every result we’ve achieved at the Emirates before would be enough to see us through to the final of the European Cup. Is Arsenal’s defence strong enough to stop us scoring? And is their attack good enough to score three against us? Who knows, but Ferguson said he would settle for a 1-0 before the game and it certainly does give us the advantage!

Scott i was thinking the exact same thing.Every Emirates result we have had, gets us to the final. But we have to win there at some point!I see both teams scoring to be honest. But for us to concede 3, it will be tough. We have rediscovered out defensive stability as well as our freshness.

  2. corea says:

    yes yes yes
but i would have prefered to think about the game in Rome already.
    Didn’t happen.

    let’s say 0-0, 1-0 or 1-1 at the Emirates.
there is a strong chance for us not to concede.
but predictions nowadays is an ungrateful thing to do.

  3. Colbert says:

Let’s just pray that Ferdinand will be OK for the 2nd leg because his return to the side has our defence return to its resilient self after the shockers against Liverpool and Fulham. Arsenal have no option but to go for the jugular against us and we need to be prepared to do the same.

  4. toby says:

I dont understand why it seems like everyone is thinking 1-0 is a bad result. Sure, it should of been 3-0 at least, but find me someone who doesnt believe we wont score at arsenal? If we do, tha means arsenal have to score 3, which they would of had to do anyway if we’d won by 2 or more goals.

The only worry for me is Rio, if we dont have him I feel we might struggle at the back, you can see what adifference he made when he played against porto.

    I just hope he’s ok

  5. corea says:

We will handle the situation even without Rio.
We shouldn’t rely on a single player. Jonny will do the job for us.

  6. Sash Sylvarre says:

True, Scott. But records are meant to be broken, and I’m praying for a win nonetheless.

  7. Rotegzy says:

i was told whichever team knocks r.madrid out of the UCL gets knocked out too and the teams that knocks them out goes all the way to win the trophy.is this true scott?

  8. Scott the Red says:

    No idea. Anyone?

  9. Zana says:

Am positive that we can score more than two in the 2nd leg .for god sake it was man united vs almunia not man united vs arsenal .

  10. Cap says:

Although I wouldve loved to see more goals last night 1-0 is a great result. Its not fantastic like 2-0 or 3-0 wouldve been, but its a lot better than 2-1.
We can go to Emirates and let Arsenal dominate the game – they had the ball quite a bit last night but everytime they got to our penalty area it was taken from them with ease. On top of that we saw how dodgy their defense was at times last night so an away goal shouldnt be unrealistic in any way.

  11. corea says:

Did Rome knock out Madrid last year ?

  12. Rotegzy says:

I was told its been like that for some years now,it seem to hold true for us last year and the year before for AC milan

  13. the Count says:

stiil biting my nails about the rooney yellow card situation – one more and he can forget his trip to rome and CL winners medal

  14. costas says:

Rotegzy is right.Ever since Real won at Hampden Park, the pattern is like this: Whoever knocks Real out, gets dumped out by the eventual winners. Hopefully this will break this season.

  15. Xyth says:

Attack will be the best defence. Surely we’ll get a chance or two.

If my memory is not failing me, in all above matches, we had enough chances to win them. So will be more of the same on Tuesday.

  16. cherry says:

    I dont understand that Costas

  17. costas says:

It’s simple Cherry. Last year,Roma knocked Real out right? And then Roma were knocked out by the eventual champions. It’s a bit complex. The team that knocks Real out of the Ch.League, then gets knocked out by the team that will go on to lift the trophy. If the trend continues this year,Chelsea will win it.

  18. AlphaRS says:

Er why do we need to score at the Emirates?

I don’t think we will even concede. I think it will be nil nil.

  19. Jessie says:

the Count, Rooney would still get a medal if Man Utd won the final; on the pre-show to the final last year SkySports interviewed Scholes who said he got a medal even though he was suspended in the winning ’99 final.
I’m really excited about this next game, I feel like the away support will be awesome and as long as United prepare for Arsenal putting on a better show, I’m sure we’lll be fine.
Also, I’m University of Toronto student over here in Canada, and trust me that you could hear the crowd at OT last night on the television. My favourite part was when everyone was chanting ‘same old Arsenal, always cheating.’

  20. AlphaRS says:

Costa is trying to say the team who beats the team who beats Real Madrid will win the European Cup.

This season Liverpool beat Real Madrid.
Chelsea beat Liverpool. Therefore Chelsea will win the European Cup.

Last season Roma beat Real Madrid.
Manchester United beat Roma. Therefore United won the European Cup.

And so the trend continues for the last 5 years.

But trends mean nothing as the holders normally get knocked out the following season at the last 16 stage. Not this season.

Porto never beaten by an English club at home. Not this season.

  21. cherry says:

That trend will not continue costas!! God forbid! We re gonna be Champions of Europe again!!

  22. Rotegzy says:

thanks costas for the help, but i hope that stops this year and in few weeks time for that matter, its all about united and its all about breaking records/trend

  23. costas says:

AlphaRS exactly! It has been going on ever since the 02-03 season, but this UNited team has been breaking records and trends left and right this year!

  24. costas says:

Oh yeah,Rooney must not miss the final. It will be the equivalent of Keane missing the 99 final. That’s how good he has been this year.

  25. cherry says:

This year it’s all about breaking records and trends and making firsts. It has been ordained that United are gonna be the first team to defend CL trophy in its current format.

  26. AlphaRS says:

Rooney and Tevez are both on yellow cards?

If we could stick Berbatov and Macheda upfront I’d be happy.
    Unlikely as it sounds.

It looked like a return to 4-3-3 last night. Brilliant fluid flowing football.
That is ho we won the European cup last season. Hopefully the same combination will work this season and if not get Berba on!

  27. Gooner77 says:

You lot spanked us last night and should of won 3-0. Swarmed all over us.
Our recent run of good form has been down to the addition of Arshavin. Our performances against Chelsea and now you last was a throwback to our form at the turn of the year where we had zero cutting edge.
I think we can play better at home but if we are to knock you out I think we will have to score 3 times as I just don’t see us getting a clean sheet.
If you do knock us out. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU BEAT CHELSEA IN THE FINAL (IF THEY GET THERE). THE THOUGHT OF THEM BEING THE FIRST LONDON CLUB TO WINTHE CL MAKES ME SICK!!!!!

  28. Jessie says:

Rooney, Tevez AND Evra are on yellow cards right now… Tevez’s yellow card was stupid yesterday, was he not suppose to go for the loose ball? He pulled of the challenge as soon as it was clear he couldn’t get it. And no yellow card for Adebayor even though he handled the ball in United’s penalty area? yeeeesh
And I thought Anderson played great yesterday, but his corners were terrible.

  29. Mic says:

History was on Chelseas side against Arsenal and Liverpool in the league yet they actually lost, history was on our side against Liverpool at home yet we got hammered! History is history but I like where you’re coming from!!

  30. Alan says:

JUST PRAY TO GOD MAN U MANAGED 1-0 AT HOME, WITH ALL THEIR 1ST AND 2ND TEAM PLAYERS FIT AGAINST AN ARSENAL MISSING 4-5 FIRST TEAM PLAYERS!

  31. corea says:

    Gooner77

    LOL
i don’t want money to win the CL title as well.)))
    Terry, Ballack, Mickel and others.

  32. AlphaRS says:

Gooner77 as much as it is gonna pain you to hear it your lads got battered yesterday. Couldn’t capitalise on 1-0 though and that will give you hope.
Arsenal are by no means out of this competition and I think their may be a few twists and turns yet. You got a quality side but seemed a bit flat yesterday for some reason. I thought it was up to Fabregas to get that drive, determination, hunger going but it all seemed to be suppressed by Anderson.

Unforuntately history shows us that the team who beats the team who beat Real Madrid win the Champions League and this season that looks like Chelsea. The omens are bad. So hopefully Barcelona put pay to Chelsea.

I think an all English Final for the 2nd year running will annoy Blatter enough to change the rules of when English teams can meet eachother. For instance they are not split in the last 16 like they are now.

  33. corea says:

“I think an all English Final for the 2nd year running will annoy Blatter enough to change the rules of when English teams can meet eachother. For instance they are not split in the last 16 like they are now.”

    it won’t happen )

  34. Gooner77 says:

    @ AlphaRS

Yeah our side is ok, but you have to remember that I watch this lot every week. I didn’t see where the goals would come from yesterday.
Adebayor was awful, Diaby is a player that is either excellent or awful(more often than not the latter). It says a lot that our best players on the night were Almunia and our kid left back, Gibbs.
Anderson and Fabregas didn’t even go head to head as Fabregas was played too high up the pitch as some kind of second striker.
I don’t have a lot of confidence for next week but who knows. I do know that Man Utd are a better side than us ( as shown by league standings ) and have a lot more options in attack and defence. If we do get through I really hope we face Barca rather than Chelsea in the final. I also think you would do better against Barca.
Hiddink is great in cup competitions and Chelsea really are able to stop good footballing sides from playing……..

  35. wazza says:

we will definitely score at the emirates from a set piece.

  36. AlphaRS says:

    @Gooner77

The balls seemed to be aimlessly punted forward yesterday but you also had some spells of possession outside the penalty area and one through ball and a slip from a United player could have been costly. So I was still certainly worried that you guys could score.

Fabregas did play too far up the field. I don’t know I just expected more from him. Especially after Barcelona are after him.

Do you think Wenger is the right man for Arsenal? I think he is a very good managewr and get’s you lads to play some really attractive football. But all I tend to hear from Gooners is 2 things.
    1. Wenger has assembled his squad at the price of one of your big signings.
    2. Wenger plays the most attractive football in the Premiership.

If you share these views would you take spending money on a few big players and playing some ugly football to win trophies?

  37. munty says:

Hey you..day dreamers!!!…the underdogs will give cut your dreams at the emirates…GO GUNNERS….there still exist a golden chance. Crush the devils

  38. costas says:

So Carlos is also on 2 yellows?I think Fergie might not use him anyway and go with Berba in order to hold more of the ball.Rooney has shown tremendoys composure recently and the wing role helps keep his temper in check. But Evra against Walcott at the Emirates might spell trouble for him.It will be a challenge for him not to get a yellow.

  39. AlphaRS says:

Plus all Barcelona need is 1 goal at Stamford Bridge and the Rent Boys will need 2 so I don’t think it is as clear cut as the media make out.
Nil nil at the Camp Nou is a good result but bringing them back to your own back yard and beating them is another story. Rent boys need to remember this.

  40. Zana says:

Let us talk about boro game..

  41. AlphaRS says:

    @Costas

    Fabio at left back?

  42. costas says:

When AphaRS?At the final or at the Emirates?I like Fabio but at the moment he hasn’t shown he can complete 90 minuts for the first team.I think he needs ti build on his endurance. As far as Saturday’s game is concerned, Fergie said that the defence will be the same with the exception of Jonny. I do think he was bluffing about changing the whole of the midfield and attack though.

  43. markroy says:

we alway’s manage to score away.Nothing to be scared of!!!

  44. Gooner77 says:

    @AlphaRS

I do think Wenger is the right man for us. Despite our 4 year trophy drought.
Like Ferguson said about Wenger himself, ‘people are cynical these days’. I don’t expect us to win all the time but I do expect a certain level of performance.
The most frustrating thing for me this season was our loss of Flamini who finally provided the aggression we lost with Viera and that we signed Arshavin so late. Our best chance of silverware was the FA cup and we left him on the bench.
It’s also frustrating that our defence did really well up until Gallas and Clichy got injured. At the same time Fabregas, Walcott and Adebayor came back.

Either way I respect Wenger for not heaping us with debt and having the courage to develop players – no one complained when he did and won stuff. Nevertheless he has his faults like every other manager, but still feel he is right for us.

  45. olusanjo says:

rotegzy, you are right. it has been like that since 2003. it must change this year by the grace of God. infact i am so optimistic i see us winning at the emirates. WATCH THIS SPACE!!!

  46. markroy says:

our biggest worry is if Ferdinand is injured or not!!! our diffence hasn’t been brilliant.

  47. Jessie says:

I want rafael to start on saturday!

  48. markroy says:

i’m not that sure if we can cope without Ferdinand!! hope Wes Brown will be back for us if Ferdinand is injured cause i’m still not convinced that Evan’s is good enough.

  49. costas says:

Wes will be a big risk at the Emirates given that he has just come back.I think he will go with Evans but this suspence is killing me.

  50. Zana says:

I expect this is the ideal team 4 yesterday
    Vds,vidic,evans,evra,rafael da silva,park,anderson,scholes,ronaldo,rooney and berbatov

  51. Kings says:

toby – I agree with you that 1-0 is a good result mate, purely because we didn’t concede the away goal. It’s just frustrating seeing us waste 3 other clear cut chances, chances that should have been despatched, and would have put us in a much greater position. We have the capability of scoring, but the onus is not on us to chase a goal. Hopefully Arsenal’s urgency to attack will leave spaces for us to exploit. Come on United!

  52. ENAD says:

And it’s Arsenal. Arseenaaaal FC, your by far the worst worst team that Old Trafford’s ever seen!

    Enjoy and share it!

  53. Ken says:

What.remember when arsnal went to the final they beat real then went ahead to beat juve but lost in the final.i wish for a chelsea v man u or arsnal v barca final

  54. Chris says:

It was a good result for us last night, in all honesty I cannot see us not scoring at the Emirates. Arsenal’s defence is just simply poor, even there midfield is still lacking.

  55. corea says:

Silly is out of the Pompey game (groin)
    Clichy definitely out of Tuesday.
RvP will have to pass the fitness test before the Tuesday game so it’s not sure until the matchday itself whether he will play.

Good news for us. We will score.

  56. costas says:

Thanx Corea.Heard about these myself. They do have some problems don’t they?I wouldn’t put it beyond them to start with Ade and Bendtner and play long balls to both from the start.

  57. Bud says:

I think we’ll concede at Emirates if Rio doesn’t play, if he’ll be fit then there’s a chance to keep a clean sheet. But even though I predict Arsenal scoring one or two goals, I’m 100% sure that we’ll score too. The Arsenal defense is weak at the moment and now Silvestre is in doubt.

  58. Trevor says:

I think Rio has been playing with an injury for quite some time. He hasnt looked his agile self!!

Evans is good but definatly not as good as the rio vidic combo!

I honestly think vidic looks a better player when rio plays! Either rio comunicates with him to keep him on track or he has more confidence playing along side rio!

  59. King Eric says:

Lest we forget that when United went on that “clean sheet” run Rio was missing for a fair few of those games. Jonny will be fine if needed.

Trevor – You are spot on about the pairing though, Vid much better player when with Rio.

  60. corea says:

And Rio much better player when with Vida )
This combo is the best defence partnership in Europe.

  61. trevor says:

Yeah, Rio really performs when he is comfortable who he is playing beside! Before Vidic Rio was getting caught out a lot! This was mainly because he was covering for the other center half and keeping too much an eye on where they were being caught out rather than his own game!

WIth Rio and Vidic i think Rio Organises Vidic and he does his thing! Rio then concentrates on his game and it works!

Its by far my ideal center of defence partnership!

    Vidic the Warrier and Braveheart!
Rio cool calm and comfortable on the ball!

A team without either of these or both in center defence is not as effective! FOr me it is very important that you have a center half who can bring the ball into midfield and pick a pass! It creates space and chances for others!

I only wish we could get Gary Nev fit and playing at least 10 straight games! People have jumped on him after judging him in a few games! Alothough he has got fit he never has been match fit! What does Nev give us most ask! Well to be honest for a right back his crossing is the best i have seen! Time and time again i have seen him whip cracking balls into the box! Further more he is a True Red!

  62. jcolas says:

I don’t think that arsenal has the attacking prowess that they did when we got those results. Plus I would think that the porto 2nd leg would be a more difficult game.

  63. trevor says:

To be honest i think we have been lucky!!! They are missing Van Persie!

AS much as i hate arsenal that fella can play! I just hope he doesnt make it back for that match!

One other thing! Everyone raves about Fabregas! He had a cracking first third of last season but what else id he do?? He has been injured this season which is fair enough!

Against liverpool what did he do?
Against us in our last encounters what has he done?

yes he can control the ball and play the odd nice pass! Maybe its wengers style of play where he likes too fancy a build up. I personaly prefer my midfielders to be more direct! Carrick, Scholes, Anderson and Giggs as well as fletcher! – When they get the ball the first thing they are looking for is a runner to put through!

I think this is where fergie wins over Wenger! Fergie looks for the result! The killer pass more! We certainly have the players on the pitch to deliver thats for sure! We mix and match more, and change our style throught the game! Arsenal are one trick ponys but nice to watch when it comes off! Who cares if you put together a slick 20 pass move round every player and not get into the final thrid! United can have a slick 5 pass move and get to the byline! or on goal! Thats whats more productive!
