Can United put more than 3 goals past Hull?

With the rest of the Premier League in FA Cup action the pressure is on United to clamber above Chelsea and Arsenal with a win over Hull this weekend.

A victory would make the Reds the first top flight team to reach 50 points this season and take them two clear of those London rivals. Three points is imperative.

And if Betfair layers are to be believed it will be achieved with little fuss as United go in to the game as overwhelming 1.17 (1-6) favourites.

Those odds aren’t particularly surprising given the champions’ dominance over the Tigers in the Premier League (three wins from three) and Hull’s position in the relegation scrap, but there are better bets to be had. Let’s find them.

With such weak opposition in town, Sir Alex may have one eye more focused on Wednesday’s second leg Carling Cup semi-final and that should be factored into our betting.

It’s highly unusual to see over 3.5 goals trading so close to odds on at 2.22 (6-5) and it’s simply too low a price to ignore. Lay that. United are capable of running up big scores, but they do so less frequently than people suspect. Since the 5-0 win over Wigan on December 30, five goals have been scored in four games with three coming against Burnley last weekend.

The chance of a low score is increased by Hull’s defensive mindset. The Tigers are highly likely to approach the game with the same ‘backs-to-the-wall’ formation that worked so well at White Hart Lane. Nevertheless, a Reds win has to be the fancy so let’s take a gamble on the 2-0 and 3-0 wins at 7 (6-1) and 8 (7-1) respectively.

Those score predictions suggest we fancy a home clean sheet and at 1.8 (4-5) it’s short but tempting nevertheless.

Away from Old Trafford the FA Cup will bring its usual array of mismatches, upsets and close-run-things.

We will undoubtedly lose a few Premier League clubs this weekend but three look worth following – a multiple on Aston Villa (at home to Brighton), Tottenham (at home to Leeds) and Everton (at home to Birmingham) pays at odds of 2.9 (19-10). The Toffees have the toughest task but the tails are up at Goodison and Birmingham’s run must end soon. Spurs and Villa just have to play to their ability and they should progress.

You can also win two tickets in the North Stand for the second leg of the Carling Cup semifinal on Wednesday. Watch Manchester United beat Manchester City live at Old Trafford by placing a risk-free bet with Betfair.

4-0 to united!!! i think rooney shud b restd so berba and owen to start with diouf comin on for berba early in the second half

  2. Kenyan-Canadian Reds says:

5-0 UNITED!! Diouf 1 berba 2 if Owen will play then he will get 1 Valancea 1

  3. jsyred says:

This is a must win game, we cannot afford to slip up again. I hope we start with two up front today as Wayne needs support. 4-0 with Diouf featuring. His hat trick in the reserves shows what potential he has.

  4. DownunderManc says:

If Nani & Park don’t play we should get 10.

  5. curtis says:

every time i read the comments on here before a game i’ve noticed that when we expect a big win we either lose (burnley away & leeds home) or draw .. so personally i hope the rest of the people on here anticipate a low score and just a victory none the less anything else is a bonus with united currently..
I’ll be happy with a 90th minute og winner to be honest, a win is a must before the arsenal game. so with all the betting sites anticipating a big win a late 1-0 winner should be worth a punt lol and if we happen to trounce them then we still happy, its a win win thing lol

  6. DownunderManc says:

Rooney sitting in behind Beratov and Aguero – whooohooo.

  7. Costas says:

    Morning guys.

3 goals is not out of the question. This season, we have noticed a trend. United strggle to make the breakthrough, but when we do, we score again.
We haven’t had many games where we just scored once. Our games either consist 0 goals or 2 or 3 goals on our behalf.

But it’s not an easy game by any means. It could be a scrap. Hopefully Rio won’t take long to settle.

  8. KungFuKick says:

    my bet is on 4-0
rooney to bag 2 goals ,valencia and diouf.
diouf should play at least 30 mins to let him build on what he has shown so far.
Also want to see obertan in the second half.

  9. jsyred says:

Agree re Obertan, he is a far better bet than playing Nani and needs game time.

  10. Costas says:

I don’t know guys. I think Nani did quite well against Burnley. I wouldn’t be surprised if he started today. The question is how does Sir Alex choose to utilise Giggs. He can’t play against City and Arsenal, so they will have to choose a game for him. We could see Obertan on the bench today and possibly get a run out in the second half.

  11. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

costa good morning its not that often this happens but i have to disagree with your nani point,i didnt think nani did well against burnley he was passable in my book, i watched the game in a bar/restaurant on saturday with my girls and trigger who isnt big into the ball was watching nani waiting for him to make a mistake due to herself noticeing a few balls up passes that he’d tried makeing. Burnley counter attacked fast but the united defence was strong enough for them but if burnley had that defence nani would of been shown up. he doesnt seem up to seal drippling the ball around arsenal in his head any more. as ive said i am no nani hater im a nani supporter nani is just a human frustrater when it comes to me

  12. arijc says:

Completely disagree with you about Nani. I thought it was the perceived threat of Nani from the left wing that made our attack against Burnley look more credible. Just want to emphasize the word “perceived” again because he has the pace and the skills to beat the defense and create chances and that makes opposition defenses wary. I would say that he had an average game but he looked more capable of delivering quality from the left hand side than any of the other options that we have deployed on that side. I think with a run of games he will improve.
I could easily think of another player who is more frustrating but had a good game that day.

Since Rooney wil be rested & Rio is back in defence i’ll settle for a 2-0 with us keeping a cleansheet.i’m cautiously optimistic since this season we’re no strangers to unusual results.we’ve got to tame tigers early on & give ourselves the chance to rest key players for the bitters. It’s not like the Carling is a priority but we’ve got to block them suckers from getting to the final via Old Trafford.let them use any other route but not thru our doorstep!Cook will swallow his vomit

  14. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

is your disagreeing point on mine not just agreeing with me
and i said it was the mentality of the way burnley played that made nani look like he’d a good game. if it was at a stronger team like the above said arsenal he would of had a stinker

  15. Costas says:

I see what you mean. Opinions were divided about his performance last Saturday.I thought that he did quite well for himself, given the 1 month lay off and the (rumored) bust up with Fergie. He has gone anonymous in the big games and that’s why I believe that he could start a game like the one today, but probably not the next two. We will see. I would start him ahead of Obertan today, but that’s just me.

  16. Lexxy says:

We should win, if we cant beat a relegation threatened hull @ O T then we can kiss the league gudbye

  17. arijc says:

To make it as clear as possible… Although Nani was not playing his best, he still gave the attack more balance by providing a threat down the left hand side. His pace gives the attack more potency. So in my opinion, he should be given more chances.

  18. Fze123 says:

I am not so confident about the game today. Whenever we have a chance to go top, we simply blow it. We cannot afford to lose, given the fact that we are playing the gooners very soon. I would be more than happy with a 1-0 tbh. Hopefully Fergie picks a good team, as well as resting key players for the CC game next week.

  19. bchilds says:

Going conservative again with a 2-0 United win, I think we’ll have a difficult start with players either still thinking about the Citeh game Tuesday or thinking about the Citeh game Wednesday.

I’m expecting a lot of changes too which usually brings its own set of problems with the team adapting to each other but I’m confident we’ll get the result we need.

    We have to!

  20. rooney the new king says:

well I am back after having such bad food poisen, well I dont care howman goals unted score at the moment has long as they win

  21. Marq says:

Agreed, I don’t care how we win it, just please win it. Its getting close to crunch time, and we don’t want to have too many heart attacks

  22. DEVILisRED says:

performance is improving in é last few games but not necessarity é results though. winning is a habit but so is losing. we need to fucking get back é winning mentality & habit. was hoping é 3-0 vs. burnley start our winning streak but we bloody lose ê next shitty game despite a superior performance. so fuck ê scoreline i say. juz fucking start off a winning streak.
    Come On United!!!
    Come On!!!

  23. wiuru says:

Just want us to get the tactics right . retain possesion effectivley ,Keep a clean sheet. 1 nil will do as long as we are constantly threatening .

  24. Tony Starks says:

funny how Obertan has suddenly become better than Nani, based on what, I wonder… Nani has more talent with his eyes closed than most of our squad – the guy needs the confidence of his manager and teammates – and to be played in his correct position…

  25. Drabik says:

I agree Tony. I have a feeling that if we ever do sell Nani, he will become a superstar somewhere. Thats why I wan’t to keep him, give him more playing time, and I am sure he will flourish!

  26. rooney the new king says:

what I do not get with the subs bench is why does fergie need to have both gibson and carrick on the bench. wont it be a little wiser to have diouf on the bench to give united more options to get a goal, add the fact its hull I thought it would be a great chance to see what this diouf really has to offer.

  27. Tony Starks says:

think Diouf is injured, he picked up an injury in the reserve match

  28. Drabik says:

TEAM NEWS Man Utd v Hull
Man Utd: Van der Sar, Rafael Da Silva, Ferdinand, Jonathan Evans, Evra, Nani, Scholes, Fletcher, Park, Owen, Rooney. Subs: Kuszczak, Brown, Berbatov, Carrick, Fabio Da Silva, Valencia, Gibson.
Hull: Myhill, McShane, Gardner, Zayatte, Dawson, Garcia, Barmby, Boateng, Geovanni, Hunt, Fagan. Subs: Duke, Mendy, Kilbane, Mouyokolo, Ghilas, Vennegoor of Hesselink, Cairney.
    Referee: Steve Bennett (Kent)

  29. Drabik says:

Owen and Rooney – lets hope they can prove Sir Alex wrong

Berbatov is the only substitute striker. Hopefully we wont need him. I think he will be more effective in the City game.

Hope Nani and Park disprove their critics, and that Ferdinand is playing. Also glad that Fergie has stuck with Rafael, especially now Brown is available to play RB, as Rafael might have lost confidence against city.

  30. radzio says:

You can watch United vs Hull game using free video live streams

    Hope United will win today

  31. NotoriousRedDevil says:

We can’t score more than 3 and Nani is playing well today.

  32. steamdigit says:

this was nani’s best game ever!!

if he can only keep pn playing like this!

rooney looked more selfish after owen was subbed! :) nani and rooney the difference today! :)

  33. horaceTheRed says:

We did, Nani had a fantastic game today. Rooney MOTM, though.

  34. geneside says:

i am satisfied with our perf today although the last three goals came very late……
but today nani played his part really well…

i am also sure that there would have been 12 goals if i am not mistaken……
and every chance created were easy to grasp…..
    but bad luck/……….
never the less rooney have always been our most dedicated player…..

  35. Kenyan-Canadian Reds says:

well done boys………nani was good today he creat alot of chances good game back on our spot 1

  36. geneside says:

if own could have responded well we would have blown away hull………….

  37. Mikael says:

Well it was an average performance bar Nani and Rooney. Owen was a bit off (he hasn’t played much so I wasn’t expecting much), some nervy defending by Evans and Rafael, som bad passing by almost everyone at times. On a good note Rio was back and he looked ok, Van was solid and Nani had his best game ever for Utd, som awesome crossing and skills… getting pass the defenders. Rooney was as hungry as always but he was leading the line very well and had som great link-up play with Owen that should have resulted in a goal for Owen.

    Let’s get it on shitty!
