Cantona Competition – The Rebel Who Would Be King

Philippe Auclair, one of France’s most passionate and talented football journalists, has written a book on The King.

“I’d read a great deal about Eric before, and had always felt frustrated by how willing profile writers and biographers were to take his dark legend at face value. It suited everyone, it seems,” said Auclair. “I was also very lucky be already in touch with a number of people who’d been major characters in his story; and I loved the player, of course: the most collectively-minded of all soloists, a true footballer whose greatness was belittled by the excessive admiration or vilification that had come his way.”

PanMacmillan.com are running a competition, well, a give-away really, judging on how easy the question is, with a United shirt signed by Cantona up for grabs as well as five signed copies of this new book. All you have to do is tell them which country Cantona is from. It really is that easy but is only open for UK residents.

RoM have a copy of the book to give away (unfortunately it’s not signed), so once you’ve put yourself in with a chance of winning Pan Macmillan’s competition, send your favourite Eric Cantona quote, whether it’s about him or by him, to republik_of_mancunia_competition@hotmail.co.uk, with your full name and address.

Cantona: The Rebel Who Would Be King, RRP £17.99, will be available to buy from August 21st 2009.

1.”The ball is like a woman, she loves to be caressed.”

2.”I prefer to play and lose than win, because I know in advance I’m going to win.”

3.I am very mistrustful of people who are constantly overintellectualising things. It kills passion. You have to allow yourself to lose control from time to time.

  4. RedMegleeker says:

“Fowler was so good at 18, and four, five years later, at 23 or 24, finished, not even for England, not even for the best teams. Finished. Completely. Out. Why?”

    Yep.

The 1st Nike Advert he did.

“I been punished, striking Goalkeeper. For spitting at a supporter… and for calling my manager a bag of shit. I also called the jury of punishment, a bunch of idiots. I thought i might have trouble finding a sponsor”

    Classic !!!!

  6. Trevor says:

The man is a true legend!

  7. aig alex is god says:

we have seen many legends at old trafford but the big fact is none of them have had the charisma and unique style that king eric had.he was different breed

thanks king eric for being the initiator the endless era of United dominance that began 17 years back.

  8. Stephen says:

Philippe Auclair, no relation to Brian?

    Ok not a good one.

  9. Muggaz says:

‘My best moment? I have a lot of good moments but the one I prefer it when I kicked the hooligan.’

The tongue in cheek arrogance of this statement is absolutely sublime.

The man was 1 in a million, and aside from Ferige, I seriously beleive he is a foundation for the success United have enjoyed since his time at Old Trafford. If I don’t win the book, i’ll definitely be buying a copy.

  10. Chep says:

I am not a man, I am Cantona!

    - but I will go to the competition with a different one

“I don’t play against a particular team. I play against the idea of losing”
the second is why he played the matt busby way
“I feel close to the rebelliousness and vigour of the youth here. Perhaps time will separate us, but nobody can deny that here, behind the windows of Manchester, there is an insane love of football, of celebration and of music.”

  21. MUFC the Religion says:

    When I think of Cantona….

Yellow and Green kit, Crystal Palace, tee’s it up and Volley into top corner.

  22. Paul the red says:

sunderland….. chip in to the top corner after taking on about 5….. scores, stops, chest out as if to say….. “how good was that”

  23. Tony_Oldham says:

Still when ever i see the goal i am not sure how he managed to hook that one in against the vermin in the last minute of the 96 final, quite unbelievable…..
An absolute Legend, my mate met him a few years ago in a club in Madrid and when he asked for his autograph he invited him over to his table and bought him drinks, what a top bloke.

  24. smithy99 says:

One Eric moment that sticks in my mind was an FA cup game away to Sheffield United in early 1995. It was a shitter of a night, totally blowing a gale. The King beat Simon Tracey with a magnificent chip from long range. How he did it was unbelievable. When he scored it, he just stood there and then took this sort of step forward. I think even he was amazed he’d scored it!

Has anyone got a link to this goal?

  25. theboogeyman says:

smithy99,he is never amazed at anything he does.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRRdXPqnZBA

Brilliant goal, from the little move in the beginning to the one-two and the chip and especially the celebration.

  26. smithy99 says:

    @theboogeyman……

No not that goal mate, i’m talking about another one. Sheffield United away,1995. we were wearing the blue and white striped shirt with all the players names in it. I can’t find a link to it though. It was a beautiful goal.

  27. KingBG says:

King Eric is simply the best!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8vnfUrXcdk

  29. smithy99 says:

@GHTT….. I remember watching that when it was on TV, Yorkshire Televisions ‘Calendar’ local news programme. Didn’t think anything of it. A few days later,Eric had told Wednesday to piss off as Trevor Francis wanted him on another weeks trial. Next thing he’d joined Leeds and the rest, as they say, is history!

  30. ellioman says:

    @Smithy99
Is this the goal you’re looking for?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etAwiDwZHQc (nr.3)

  31. gotta hate tiny tears says:

its was francis made him do his full trial indoors
then when it was finished and was asking if he would be signed they said they wanted to do the same trial out doors on real grass
    what a plonker
    eric cantona is a genius

  32. gotta hate tiny tears says:

my favourite cantona goal was the fa cup final against liverpool
yes it was a late winner in a final against the dippers
but the way he hit he ball by pulling all his weight back while at the same time putting all his power forward keeping his balance while being off balance and striking it so it flys past 3/4 defenders into the top corner it could of been in a pre season against some bottom of the table team from japan and it would still be an amazingly impossible strike, but it seems nothing was impossible for the king

  33. smithy99 says:

@ellioman….Thats it fella! Number 3, 3mins 56 secs. That goal was scored into a head wind, if you look at the pitch there was shit blowing all over the place!! Fantastic. I love the way Simon Tracey is frantically scrambling backwards trying to get to it!

    Cheers for finding that!

@GHTT…. Trevor Francis is an arsehole. A dour, boring cunt who obviously has no eye for football talent!

  34. cantona7 says:

to the man that made me fall in luv with Manchester United, Eric Cantona, I cannot thank you enough.

He is the greatest footballer i have seen in my lifetime. NOBODY else comes close, not even Maradona. (i’m 26)

GHTT, thanks for the videos bro.

  35. smithy99 says:

@Cantona7…. I agree with you totally. He is the greatest footballer i have ever seen, and, i suspect, the greatest player i will ever see. My favouite player of all time. No one will ever come close. Eric Cantona – Legend.

  36. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    @cantona7

  40. cantona7 says:

thank you GHTT. i registered another youtube account just to rate that vid 5stars :)

sometimes we tend to forget, he’s not a man, he’s Cantona.

  41. Buildabonfire68 says:

Even though he was obviously a great player my favourite memory of Eric was when he battered the Crystal Palace fan. I was at the game but had no view of that side. I seen him get sent off and it obvious somthing had happened but nobody knew what. Then somebody with a radio said Eric had twated a Palace fan. I remember watching it the next day. The look on the face of that prick as Eric threw that punch. He picked the wrong guy to call a French motherfucker. That is the moment Eric became my all time hero.

  42. King Eric says:

Buildabonfire68 – Yeah spot on, loved that moment too. The day a United legend thought “I ain’t gonna take this shite from the racist cockney thug”. Superb moment. Not just Matthew Simmons face but all those next to him. Absolute shock horror!

  43. LET ME FEEL THE LOVE AGAIN says:

TO MANY TO MENTION WE WERE SO LUCKY TO HAVE SEEN HIM AT THE TOP GOD I LOVE ERIC………….PURE CLASS

  44. Zulu-Malta says:

WHAT A MAN. FRANKLY HE WASN’T JUST A MAN. HE WAS THE MAN OF ALL MEN!
THAT SONG ”WIND BENEATH MY WINGS” WAS ABSOLUTLEY TAILOR MADE FOR HIM ! IN FACT WHEN I HEAR IT ON THE RADIO IT ALWAYS REMIND OF EVERYTHING WHAT I WANTED TO BE………AND I JUST WANTED TO BE LIKE MY HERO……………….KING ERIC !!!!!!!!!!!
