Chelsea Boss Doesn’t Need Owen

Chelsea’s new boss has today claimed that there was no need for him to try to sign Michael Owen because they already have a good enough strike force.

“Because now we have very good strikers in the team – Drogba, Anelka, Kalou,” said Ancelotti. “Sturridge is a young player but he can potentially be a great striker. Michael Owen is a great striker and at the moment is in a low period, but I think he is not an old player, he is young at 29. For sure Manchester United have lost two important players but United maintain a great team because they have a lot of good players and also have a tradition, and this is also important to build a team.”

Whilst it’s hard to argue with Anelka’s goalscoring record last season, particularly considering he isn’t the club’s penalty taker, it’s hard to imagine he will score 25 goals again, given that he will be turning 31 this season. He also went 13 games without a goal during the crucial February to April period and didn’t manage a goal in the big games.

Salomon Kalou has age on his side, set to turn 24-years-old this summer, however he’s never scored more than 7 goals in a season during his three years at the club.

Didier Drogba turns 32 this season after spending chunks of last season out on the treatment table. Every few months he seems to change his mind on where he wants to be playing and scored just five goals in the league last season.

Only time will tell how good this bit of business by Sir Alex was.

Chelsea need pato to make sure they finish 2nd behind us.

  7. davetian says:

Carlo is a right sack. He spent last summer chasing Adebayor, who the fuck is he to tell us about strikers? Silly old c*nt. Kalou is a right bag of wank, Anelka is a decent player but still a c*nt, and Dogbra should just do one because i literally hate him. Seriously, how long has it been since he washed his hair? My dog bathes more than him.

We’ve signed a proven goalscorer, on a piss poor contract (by footballers standards, anyway), for free. If it wasnt for the fact that he’s been at Newcastle and had recent injury problems everyone outside the club and it’s fans would be saying its a masterstroke, which reckon is what we’ll see it as in a few months.

Isnt this a man managing a new-money club thats just spent 15 odd million on a left back when they already have Cashley anyway? Cashley is a proper money grabbing c*nt, and i’ll never forgive him for taking Cheryl off me, but the lad can play. So i’m not having this old fucks transfer policy, he can do one. Isnt this also the guy who signed Flamini on a free and didnt play him? Yeah, he knows his stuff alright. Granted, he’s won the european cup , but so has FSW, so that’s hardly the be all and end all.

And is it me, or was he sounding very condisending towards us, a team that’s pipped his new side to the title 3 years in a row, and beat them in a european cup final just a year ago? Thought so. And saying Owen is a young man at 29? Fucking hell, i’d you’d of seen his Milan side last year then Owen is positively youthful!!!

  9. Pi says:

Hey…. everyone’s forgotten Shevchenko. He’s 33, out of form, unsettled and looking to head back to Ukraine where he started out and ppl won’t mind how he plays.

Very interesting set of strikers they have! :-) Maybe they’ll take some on loan from City!

  28. ROJO RED ROT ROUGE says:

Ancelotti is typical of those managers who unlike Sir Alex, only know how to spend Big in order to get quality.

Like most “Russian” purchases they look at the price tag to tell them if it is any good.

He knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Little Michael Owen – Now that is what you call value for money !

  29. ROJO RED ROT ROUGE says:

    @ SMOKIEJACK

Fair and unbiased comment is always refreshing from the enemy (lol)
I think a lot of people are starting to realise the great value punt Sir Alex has taken on Michael Owen.
Owen has nothing to prove but he does have everything to disprove. He is a proven goalscorer and a proven big match winner, that is already written in the history books.
What he has to disprove is the injury- prone label. Yes, he has been injured but then again so was Ruud, so was Keano and the list could go on. Owen has that priceless quality that Rooney has and that Sir Alex has in abundance and that is the hunger to win things. He knows full well goals are what it takes and everything thing else is just a footnote. He will get busy in double quick time and will score for fun and by the end of the season could prove to be the highest earner at the club once he has totted up all his bonuses!

  30. RomansUncle says:

I think what Ancelotti is trying to say (maybe his English isn’t perfect yet) is “Owen is a pile of sh1t!”. Something you lot were probably saying for the last 5 years. How fickle some people can be!

  31. Stephen says:

But Owen was free and his wages are very low, unlike Shevchenko who is a pile of shit.

  32. Gudjohnsen says:

Just watched a short interview with Eidur Gudjohnsen taken by some kid in Iceland 3 or 4 days ago. He was asked “What team would you never play for?”. He responded instantly “Liverpool”.

Whats wrong with testin out a few youngsters with the first team?
Just cos the scouse paper puts a stupid title on the story.

  36. MUFC the Religion says:

    @King Eric

Benitez is such a prick. Thinks he’s the Simon Cowell of young talent or something. Even their youth side is full of filthy spaniards.

The best bit about it are the deluded pricks comments at the bottom. They think Benitez is a genius and that the “Kop Idol” will work. It’s laughable.

Another thing, Benitez says “the chance to train alongside players like Benayoun and Skrtel”. He puts them pair of freaks in his list of best players at the club. Liverpool do not compare to United. First team or squad. That is FACT. They are going to have two players in the most important position, Mascherano and Alonso, who will not want to be there.

  37. King Eric says:

Doherty – Has he not heard of scouting players mate? What sort of a way is this to get players, it is lazyness.

  38. King Eric says:

Sorry to go off topic but have seen summat interesting on the MEN site regarding Valencia. By all accounts and I did not know this he plays central midfield for Ecuador, very effectively and is considered their best player. Is Sir Alex planning on playing him in this role, which could explain our sudden influx of “wingers”? Personally I would love to see him on the flank. Cannot wait to see him in action for us actually.

  39. Fze123 says:

“My time was a little different – we did not have the big sponsors.” Pele said. “Today they have big sponsors, big companies to support football. But in my point of view and the point of view of Fifa, these (players salaries) must be controlled.

You get a player today that they announce in Manchester United, Real Madrid or Milan or any other team, and they kiss their shirt,” he added. “The next day, he goes to another team and he kisses that shirt. This, I think, is something we have to pay attention to for the next generation.”

    True words.

  40. King Eric says:

Did anyone see Premier league years 06/07? Berba can certainly take free kicks judging by the one featured on there!

  41. Corea says:

    @ King Eric

i remember his free kick against West Ham.. what season not sure..

  42. Doherty says:

    @ King Eric
I saw that profile on Valencia as well,

“He is always first choice, holding a spot in the middle as Ecuador’s dynamo all-purpose player.

not sure that means he plays a central midfield role tho, maybe im wrong, but any Ecuador games iv seen hes on the wing.

    Article: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/manchester_united/s/1124694_antonio_valencia_profile

  43. Jonny says:

Everyones a bit baffled by Ferguson signing Owen, but he is without doubt a quality player. Houllier burnt him out when he first broke through which has led to the injury problems but I can see him being used as a very effective impact sub, used in the same way Tevez was often used and Solskjaer as well. I think its a tidy bit of business.

  44. Fze123 says:

i think valencia should just be played in his original role on the wing by fergie, it could take him a while to adapt to playing as CM anyway. but i am still wondering why fergie’s getting more wingers, will Obertan be loaned out next season, or play in the reserves..?

reportedly, our players are back at carrington, started pre-season gym training today. can’t wait for pre-season now, 11 days to go.

  45. MUFC the Religion says:

depending on how well Michael Owen gets on, I think that he and Valencia could form a great partnership. Valencia’s crossing ability is amazing and Owen puts chances away. Also, Rooney and Owen were rated as one of the best partnerships in the world. We all know Wazza and Berba will shine. Berba will be unplayable from now on and with Rooney being the best player in the world an’ all, I’m more excited about this season than any other.

This team is more United than that of last year.

  46. Fze123 says:

    @ MUFC the Religion
“I’m more excited about this season than any other.”

So am I, though my non utd friends are sceptical of this, keep saying to me “you must be gutted, you lost the best player in the world + tevez, real will have more chance in reaching the CL final than you will.” told them to shut up. no doubt berba and rooney will be ruthless, and have a feeling berba will be the PL player with the most assists.

can’t wait for pre-season to see how they’ll play together.

  47. MUFC the Religion says:

    @Fze123

Do you know when they start training at carrington. I think it might be tomorow. Can’t wait for pics of Owen in UTD training gear. Dippers will not be amused.

I like it when other fans say we won’t win anything. The end of the season always proves them to be mugs.

Agreed about Berba. Rooney to reach at least 30 goals, that has to be worth a punt.

Anyone else realise how important United are to them when they’re not playing. I love football.

  48. Buliwyf says:

Well it’s a good start when opponent Managers start to look for explenations on why they haven’t signed Michael on a free!

  49. Sam says:

I’m a Chelsea supporter but I don’t care about the replies cause I talk sense. I just have my doubts on owen. He’s been plagued with injuries and it’s not a surprise that when a team faces Manu , they tend to be more physical. I don’t know if owen can handle such physical opposition after all he’s been thru. I feel SAF still will pull out an ace b4 the window ends. BTW no matter how bad kalou is, atleast he didn’t cost 30 million pounds (berb) and result in the departure of a much better striker (read tevez)

  50. fze123 says:

    MUFC the Religion
yeah, they’ll start training either this week or probably monday, because they’re going Asia on the 16th. you’re saying you can’t wait for pics of owen in a utd gear, well i can’t wait to see owen in a utd shirt!

apparently, douglas costa is saying he wants a move to the premier league.

  51. MUFC the Religion says:

  55. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    afromanc
    do unitted have him

  56. afromanc says:

It seems most likely. But until it is confirmed it is never confirmed…

All im hoping for more than any wide player right now, is the purchase of another top class striker, owen is not going to be enough in the bigger games and relying on berbatov and rooney to score goals in 3 or 4 competions throughout the season is going to be a big ask…
Samuel Eto looks like a huge possibilty as villa looks barca bound and tevez(cunt) looks city bound…

  57. AIG Alex is GOD says:

etoo not wanted.his wage demands are waytoo much.i would rather have huntelaar

  58. afromanc says:

huntelaar could be a great option…We should have got him two years ago

  59. AIG Alex is GOD says:

afromanc spot on. huntelaar reminds me of van nistelrooy.but his reputation has taken a battering at real madrid.

  60. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

micheal owens reputation had taken a battering at real madrid but he’ll come good at a top team that will treat him right

  64. Costas says:

    Morning guys!

Great video GHTT, as usual. She doesn’t seem too excited though. I think she is still puzzled as to how Owen ended up at United! Regarding Huntelaar, i will say what i said in the past: We never know if a prolific goalscorer in Holland will end up as the next Ruud or the next Alfonso Alves.

  65. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    morning my man costa
i think i wanna head to greece to buy you a beer mate

  66. willierednut says:

    @Sam
Check tevez’s scoring rate for club and country, then Owen’s think you will see who’s is better.

  67. King Eric says:

Morning folk. Was watching Live from OT last night and is it just me who is getting fucked off with callers and people in general expecting Sir Alex to go and splash £50 million plus on players like Aguero and Ribery? I suggest to those people that they go and read about United and its history. We are not in the habit of wasting money on vastly overpriced players. It is NOT the United way. Build from the youth up with a mixture of experience and squad players.

  68. AIG Alex is GOD says:

spot on king eric.United are known for making legends, not buying legends.

  69. willierednut says:

Whoever SAF brings in ill be happy, after all he knows best. That header calderon loves the spotlight still trying to get the credit for ronny.

  70. Costas says:

Thanks GHTT. I will drink one on your behalf with my lunch. I know many would like Huntelaar, but at the moment i think we need to buy another creative player.

@King ERic: I am not against splashing 50 million pounds. But if we are going to do this for once in the club’s history, it has to be for someone truly worth it. The players you mentioned, simply aren’t. I don’t know if anyone is at the moment. That’s not to say that the Ronaldo money should be saved for other purposes of course.

  71. Stephen says:

There two schools of thought with regards to teh “Ronaldo noney” one being that we go out and try to purchase one or two big names who will significantly improve the team, or go out and plan for the long term future in buing 3 or 4 young player who might be world class in a few years time.
The key is not to buy big on a player for the sake of it, or buy someone we simply don’t need or will not settle, also they other side of the coin is not to fritter the money away on players who simply have no chance of making it as the saud already looks quite large.
For me it is a gentle balance, we need at least one centrel midfield player, and we could raid Real for the players who always seem to get banaded about likewise someone like Drenthe as we seem to intersted in more players who can play out wide.
We simply have to put our trust in the manager because this is a big summer for the club loosing a player like Ronaldo who was so instrumental to our play to sort this dilema out.

  72. Costas says:

If we were the kind of club to panic buy, we would have got Darren Anderton after Kanchelskis left and not taken our chances with Beckham. United fans should remember that. The way the game is today, that’s not as easy anymore. We just have to buy 2-3 young players as Stephen says, and put our faith behind them. Just like we did with Anderson and Nani. These 2 players haven’t turned out all bad. I know Nani gets a lot of stick, but i think he can still turn things around.

  73. theboogeyman says:

Have faith in Sir Alex to bring us number 19.I will support whoever he signs because he knows what to do at these times when we don’t.That’s why he is the manager and we are just supporters.

    PS:No problem,GHTT.To be honest,I didn’t think I helped much.Be honest if I didn’t. :)

  74. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

  76. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

i followed what ya told me and found them

  77. Stephen says:

I suppose the only isuue in the past was swapping like for like, with Ronaldo there simply isn’t another winger bar Messi who can score the level of goals he has, so SAFFY will just re shape the side I suppose with more crosses getting into the box, this is why with Owen picking up the bits and pieces in the box he could be the bargain of the summer.

  78. Costas says:

I have heard that Marca is writing that Real are after De Rossi. If there is a chance of that player leaving Roma, we should be in the hunt i believe.

  79. Costas says:

You are right Stephen. SAF must have thought this through. With Nani and Valencia playing,we do have good crossers of the ball in there.

  80. Stephen says:

It seems logical Costas doesn’t it which will do us good as maybe other Premier league sides probably would have worked out how to stop us to some degree as we were grinding out a lot of results last season, I can see us playing more fluid which in turn should bring the best out of Berba.

  81. AIG Alex is GOD says:

Nani, good crosser???.Cmmon Costas.he is awful.i get so frustrated seeing him beat defenders and then putting in shit of a cross.valencia is good though and i have heard Tosic is a dead ball expert

  82. Gudjohnsen says:

Now City have made a bid on Rossi, but it was denied. Rossi has stated he only wants to go to the top 6 European clubs and City don’t fit into that category. Also, it is believed that Man Utd have the first buy option if the player is to be sold to England.

What do Terry, Puyol, Eto’o, Kaka, Rossi and Berbatov have in common…?

  83. theboogeyman says:

Nani is a superb crosser, one of the best we have.Give him a run in the team and see what he does.If he doesn’t take his chance, then it’s the end of the road here for him,in my opinion.Unless Sir Alex believes in him.In which case,I believe in him.

  84. theboogeyman says:

    ALL REJECTED CITEH!!

  85. Stephen says:

AIG Alex is GOD, Nani is the best crosser at the club mate.

  86. AIG Alex is GOD says:

I think we shud give him a chance. No doubt???but he is like lennon.great speed but he can improve his final ball.dont knw what dis guy obertan is like

Gudjhonsen, only assholes like tevez want to go to wastelands

  87. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    Stephen
check valencias stats if you wanna know the best crosser at the mo

  88. AIG Alex is GOD says:

stephen, sorry mate i was impressed with his crosses and corners in da first season but last season he was a major major disappointment.i hope thoug he comes good.he can score some scorchers though (spurs, middlesbrough, derby, etc)

  89. Costas says:

Nani is a good crosser. We just didn’t have a target man at the end of them. Valencia’s crossing skills were more evident becuase he had Heskey fo that job. But i will say that sometimes Nani doesn’t know when it’s the right time to cross. That’s what lets him and us down.

  90. Stephen says:

I was talking pre Valencia mate, sorry.

  91. Stephen says:

AIG Alex is GOD, He has a lot of ability and just needs in my view a decent run of games to get settled which will build his confidence, but for him and Anderson it is a make of break season for them.

  92. AIG Alex is GOD says:

spot on costas.berba is good at heading but often drops too deep.Roo and Owen are not that good in the air and we dont have ron to cme from the wing and head them in.Berba has to stay in the box more

  93. AIG Alex is GOD says:

Stephen,i agree Nani has great talent and ability but he has to get into the act this season. As for Anderson,2 years no goal???and he is a replacement for scholsey???? he can take penalties well under pressure though

  94. Trevor says:

    Yeah.

We will see how they fair next year! They are still reliant on Lampard, Ballack and Drogba! They are getting on in years!!

Some players play better in later years some performances Drop! – Im just interested in how the perform next year!

In addition, will be interested in how he adapts to life in the premiership!!

Fergie Laughed last year when Scolari Ridiculed the Squad Size! – erm we have a big squad as In the Premiership as the demands are higher than other leagues squad rotation is a must!!

  95. Doherty says:

    @AIG Alex is GOD:

Have u even read that adebayor brochure. It’s a complete piss take.
    with lines like:
“he has a chance to goal ratio of 0.0045, bettered only by 453 players last year”
It was created on some fan site as a joke.

  96. Gudjohnsen says:

Owen would be awesome in the air if he was a little taller. But he’s a good finisher and I’m sure he’ll have no trouble netting some of Valencia’s crosses. I agree with Berbatov, he’s also a great target man but he sometimes drops a little too deep and isn’t in the box when needed, perhaps that will change now that Ronaldo is gone. I hope we use Berba and Rooney up front, they can switch positions easily if they want; one is in the box while the other plays a little deeper in the hole.

  97. Stephen says:

I am a true Anderson sceptic, he is very popular but I never get the hype about the lad, he had good games against Arsenal and the Dippers in his first season, but in the second half of that season his form dwindled at first I felt he was tired but after watching him last I deep down feel he is not up to it.
I am not saying I want him to fail far from it i want all players to succeed and needs to be given a chance this season, but he is known to be a bit of a joker and should just get his head down because he is at a fantastic club and does not want to regret not making it if he can.
I was reading about Kleberson in the paper this moring saying with a bit of luck he could have done the business for us lets hope Anderson does not end up having those same thoughts 5 years from now.

  98. Doherty says:

Sure this is the quote from rio:

i remember saying to vidic after the game how glad i was we wouldnt have to play against him every week… vidic just grunted like a wild boar”

    Hardly serious.

  99. AIG Alex is GOD says:

    doherty

precisely wat i m saying.i was searching for one true line in that brochure.vida and rio will whack him any day

  100. Costas says:

If anything drops in the box, Owen will be there to score. That’s where he will be usefull, especially in the dying minutes of stalemates when we will be piling the pressure forward.

    @AIG Alex is GOD :

You are right about Berba. As the season wore on, he started playing more and more out of the box. I wish that changes next season. And it will definitely be a make or break season for Ando and Nani.

  101. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

valencia was eyed up last season and berba was bought last season
i think this was all because ronaldo’s deal reportly was sorted last years
owen in tiny tevez out its an improvment on respect and goals stats levels
united are growiing better and are trying to build onto a team that have won 6 in 3 years, united are the soul of english and european football
to quote from a set of Manchester United programme notes from 1937: “Manchester United stands for more than any person, any player, any supporter. It is the soul of a sporting organisation which goes on season after season, making history all the time”
manchester united is not about buying its abought making
its not about winning its about making history
its about being the soul of everyone who has seen them play

and chelsea ill never ever match that

  102. AIG Alex is GOD says:

ya stephen, right abt the joker thing.he said he wud dance like a crazy cat wen he wud scre his first goal.sir Alex said we r lighting candles so that he will scre.

  103. King Eric says:

Alex is God – Despite his size Owen is actually pretty good in the air and has scored a fair few goals with his head. Oh it is funny to see everyone rejecting Citeh!

  104. AIG Alex is GOD says:

i think Berba is jst dropping deep bcoz people say he does nt work hard like roo or tevez which is aoad of crap.wen he has hardworking plyrs around him, surely he can stay around the penalty area.he afterall has best first touch in the world.it is jst his style that makes him look lazy.he is not in reality

  105. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    my lastmessage was for sam

  106. rc7 says:

I think Berba has dropped deep because SAF has asked him to play that role. He’s become a much better player than he was at Spurs. He didn’t score as many last season because he didn’t have as many chances on goal due to his deeper role.

  107. Kings says:

Sam – we spent 30 million on Berba and he won 2 medals last season (didn’t feature in the Carling Cup), so that is money well spent as far as I am concerned. Tevez did well for us, but he is no way a better striker – 15 goals in 51 games bares testament to that.

  108. MUFC the Religion says:

Anderson will be the best player in the world. Slight injuries and being on the bench mostly for last season. The moment he scores a goal more will follow. He has great power. So long as he is played in attacking mid, he will progress to the player we know he can be.

  109. Costas says:

    @MUFC the Religion :

I liked Ando in his first season because i thought he had the ingridients to become the perfect midfielder. He had good passing ability and his engine room was great as well. Last year, i think that apart from injuries and the bench, he took a couple of steps back. I don’t like to live my life with “what ifs”, but i think that Anderson of 07-08 would have never allowed Iniesta to get past him so easily in that dreaded first goal in Rome. But i really love the guy and i hope you are right about him!

  110. Costas says:

Of course as you say, DM might not be his best position and he should play as an AM.

  111. porter says:

obertan is a done deal, says manutd.com

  112. Doherty says:

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of winger Gabriel Obertan from Bordeaux on a four-year contract.

  113. Oooodz says:

And he’s not coming on pre season tour due to a slight injury :(

  114. rc7 says:

He looks like Sylvestre in that photo.

  115. porter says:

and SAF says give him 2 years… can’t say i’m too excited

  116. Stephen says:

I think saying “He will be the best player in the World” is way off the mark sorry mate, he will need to firstly break into the first team and find his form consistently, then he will be a good player but he will never be the best player in the world.
