Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong both delayed over agreeing a new contract with Manchester United as their deal was set to expire in the summer. Mason Greenwood, who is younger than the pair, forced his way in to the first team during this time and currently has 17 goals for the first team this season.

Gomes opted to leave the club for Lille where he will go on loan at Boavista. This move has raised eyebrows, with people questioning why he couldn’t go on loan from United. His father is from Portugal and his new French club have arranged with a move there. Possibly United weren’t keen on this direction for him but it appears as though, after 44 Premier League minutes in two seasons, Gomes realised that it was unlikely he had a future at the club. He turns 20 this month so maybe felt it was time to make the brave decision to leave the club he’s been with since he was six for more regular playing time.

Chong, by contrast, committed his future to the club by extending his contract, but has only made one sub appearance for the first team since. His agent, Erkan Alkan, has told BILD that Gomes is set for a move to Germany.

“Tahith would like to go to the Bundesliga,” he said. “We’ll talk to Manchester United about it on Thursday.”

Werder Bremen sporting director Frank Baumann has confirmed to Weser Kurier that they are interested in our player.

“[Chong] is very fast, he comes in from the wing – he fits our profile,” he said. “We can add two or three more players. Borrowing guys from top clubs like this can make sense to us. Because of our situation, he’s a player who could be interesting.”

Chong came off the bench during our 2-1 win over LASK on Wednesday at left-back.
