The good thing about this formation is that it’s pretty much a 4-4-2 with the ball, but a 4-5-1 without, as these days Rooney drops way back into midfield when he needs to. He was fantastic against Everton when we were seeing out the game, holding back, winning and keeping possession.
It used to be a constant source of frustration seeing Rooney back on the halfway line trying to win the ball and influence the game, but the constant, tireless and intelligent movement of Hernandez changes this completely, as all it takes is one good ball to set him through and the midfielders know this, meaning Rooney really occupies them and causes problems when he drops deep – something which Chelsea failed to deal with over two legs.

Yeh, I’m leaning towards Valencia as well mate. He never seems to be phased by any sense of occasion, does gets on with his job all night and is always there as an out-ball. Nani can get a bit over-excited in big games and starts being silly… coming inside, indecision, going to ground etc. I’m sure that will be ironed out of his game eventually, but I’d rather see him on as a sub – if needed – tonight.

@Costas, I think you have it spot on. I would be very surprised if Rafael starts the game ahead of O’Shea. Given Schalke’s attacking prowess, Sir Alex is bound to go for a more defensive line-up away from home. Hence, it is spot on that you have both Park and O’Shea in the team ahead of Rafa and Nani who, for all their attacking capabilties, come up short at the back.
We all know that no matter what lineup plays with whatever formation, there is always a goal in us. As long as we don’t concede, we might be able to nick one like we did at Chelsea which is exactly what I think SAF will be aiming for here.
I cannot wait for tonight. No matter what we say about the 19th being our priority, there is something romantic about these European nights that League and Cup football cannot match ever.

If he doesn’t start either leg I think its curtains for his career. The manager probably does still have an eye on Sundays game. We’ve been impressive away from home this season and playing Scholes and Giggs means a lot of ball retention. Thats important for an away day in Europe. We shall see though.

Was just thinking about how everyone seems to think this is the worst team to possibly win the league.
For me, Van Der Sar, Vidic, Smalling, Rafael, Giggs, Nani, Hernandez and Berbatov have been outstanding. Rooney has been brilliant the last fee months as to has Valencia. With all the injuries we’ve had to contend with I’d say this was a pretty good side. I also think Scholes had been very influential especially at the start of the season.
So all this talk about new signings – I can imagine one or two but I very much doubt it will be wholesale changes.

I think if City could clean up their act it would go a long way to improving their image and hell, improving the club. The fact is they don’t have to be small time forever. A club can improve, it can raise itself and the standards to which it holds itself. The problem City have is that they want to be a big club, but on the big stage the only thing anybody sees is a diffident team and a crowd singing about a plane crash. What kind of an advert for the club is that? Who would want to wear their shirt? A big club has to appeal to people beyond it’s local area, especially if it shares that local area with a vastly superior rival.
So in short, City face a choice, small time forever, clinging to the joy of beating us maybe one time in four with a billion pound squad and singing about a plane crash, or cleaning up their act and making a genuine effort to improve the club. For a club that can talk about the future all day long they seem to be very unwilling to actually attempt to reach that future.
The bottom line is that if clubs say, “But they do it too,” then nothing will change and there will be no improvement. And it’s just an excuse. If a club wants to clean up its act, it can. Millwall tried it with a reasonable amount of success for example, and Tottenham are making the effort to get rid of the term ‘Yids’ from references to their team. It’s not easy and it takes time, but it can only happen if your club actually tries to make it happen. If City do make the effort to eradicate the word Munich from the culture of their club then it would only benefit them.
It’s ironic really that a disaster for United has served to define our rivals more than it has us.
Agree with Doghouse. United will be too strong for Schalke. Instead of worrying about what the Germans can do, they have to deal with our players. I don’t think they will in all honesty. I always had a soft spot for Everton, when we played them and their fans observed the minute silence for SMB, without any problems. I suppose a minority spoil it for the vast majority.

I remember a few seasons ago at Pompey away the lads behind me got told they’d be ejected if they didn’t take down their United -> England banner. As well as not wanting to help feed the Glazers greed I one of the reasons I stopped going to OT was the fact that you’d usually get people looking at you like an alien if you made a bit of noise. Away days are the best and I’ll keep going. Our home fans aren’t the worst by any strectch but because a lot of the vocal fans are all spread apart it makes it difficult to get a good atmosphere going unless it’s a big match.
