What made it even more special was that coming into the game Cantona had been in poor form by his high standards and was getting all sorts of shit from the media and that was one of the reasons for his celebration……..

Diretta Newsare reporting that one of the Reds’ ‘main objectives’ in the transfer market is Barcelona prodigy Thiago Alcantara. The midfielder, a team-mate of David De Gea’s at last year’s Under-21 European finals and a scorer against United on tour, was apparently offered in part-exchange to AC Milan for Thiago Silva, who is now seemingly PSG-bound. It’s said the 21-year-old would still be difficult to lure away from Camp Nou but he’s valued at €25million.

    I would love it too.
The likelihood of that ever happening is probably Zero. We have grown so much as a club that the tourists visit OT regularly, the wealthy aswell, the lazy ones with cash and the daytrippers looking to have a good day out with the Manchester United Gold treatment.

But I can imagine it in a scenario that: it is the opening day of the season where we begin our mission to get promotion back into the Premier League.

 In modern times, 2008-CL-Barca at OT will never be rivalled. 70,000+ cheering like crazy !

Well damn, just got beat 4-0 by Spain :-( Impossible task anyway, we needed something from Croatia to have a chance against Italy in the last game, but we didn’t get it.

Still, while its a sad moment for Irish fans who waited 24 years to get back to the Euros, the fans were awesome. Spain mesmerized us on the pitch…. Irish fans mesmerized Spanish fans in the stands to the point that the camera was being taken away from the pitch to show fans singing at the top of their voice, despite being 4-0 down with their Euro campaign only minutes from ending. Hopefully people can remember that instead of the fears of racism and violence that marred the tournament from the beginning.

Has anyone commented on Italy’s 3-5-2 formation ? I’d just love to see SAF tinker with that.

  48. samuel - united WE stand says:

Spain are just too classy and they will take some stopping. Pass, pass, pass. They fucking pass teams into oblivion and it just seems very difficult to stop. Forget about their crisp accurate passing and brilliant technical abilities, they press teams relentlessly that you do not get a break on the ball. They hunt teams down like a pack of wolves and then rip you to shreds. Xavi and iniesta are just superb, they combine effectively to carve teams open regularly. Torres looks back with his confidence but it’s ireland and they were so poor all over the pitch.

Spain continue to produce from this never ending conveyor belt of talent, i worry for football if one nation dominates everything.

  49. WillieRedNut says:

    Mikey – I had Spain to win 4 1? Cunt! :)

  50. dannysoya LOVES SIAN MASSEY says:

@Denton Davey. I see why one would like the 3-5=2 my only qualms is that it is a defensive formation and I will explain myself.

A 3-5-2 majority of the time involves playing with 3 centre backs and two wing backs or wingers who are defensively sound. that leaves 4 players to do 80% of the attacking as you need some balance in the middle with a sitting midfielder. Not the kind of way I would like to see United play but it could work because Valencia is defensively sound and Evra is more of wing back than a Left back at this point in his career. Ideally for me, the three centre backs would be Smalling, Evans and Vidic. the wing backs would be valencia and Evra the three midfielders would be carrick ( Sitting), Kagawa ( LAM) New Signing/Cleverley ( RAM) the two strikers are of course Welbeck and Rooney. means no place for Nani in the team unless you wanna play him in the middle which is not his strongest position ( I don’t think it is).

  51. FletchTHEMAN says:

Danny, Lets just hope we get something out of Cleverley this season.

Imagine a year with contributions from Cleverley, Vidic, and maybe even Fletcher fit.

  52. samuel - united WE stand says:

Actually, 3-5-2 involves wings backs who patrol up and down the by line. No way is it a defensive formation. Anyone that watched napoli regularly last season would notice how attack minded they are. If you have the right players in the tactics then it works.

The three centre backs are there but they also distribute the ball from the back.

The irish unfortunately got hammered today. By the end they looked too tired to even defend against the Spanish.

  56. Clint-Iamyourpapii says:

    Denton -

It is not possible with United to play 3-5-2, we simply don’t have the italian quality or composure on the ball to pull it off, We also don’t have the De Rossi battler type sweeper or the 4-man QUAD in the middle to become the “carousel” of our team.

    Italy have ;
    ———Chiellini ——-Bonucci —–
    Maggio—— DE ROSSI —-GiaccherinI
    ———–PIRLO———-MOTTA———–
    —————–MARCHISIO———-
    ———–Ballotelli—– Cassano ——-
The key men are in caps lock.
We are lacking in a Battler (although we have Fletch) and we are still crying out for a centre midfielder, plus this formation would take away our traditional width because of what it asks of the midfield to do. I really wouldn’t trust Giggs to do the Motta or Pirlo role.

    We’d looks ridiculous too because some of our players are lacking technically and are very young. If we was to do this thing 3-5-2 we look somewhat like;

    ———— Vidic ——–Rio———
    –Rafael———Jones———Evra–
    ——-Scholes———Carrick——–
    ——————Kagawa————–
    —–Welbeck————–Rooney——

 No Nani,Young,Valencia, Jones would run loose because of the lack of discipline, we’d be heavily reliant on the width of two wing back in the Premier League !!! Plus Carrick does the holding role for us well, so a battler taking that De Rossi spot would probably spoil his game and natural floating about presence in the midfield.

It works in International football because the game is slower and more central but in the premier league we’d get mullered week in week out ;)

  57. fergie is the boss says:

Clint-Iamyourpapii – this is where I disagree, this idea we need a battler is a myth, I have said it time and time again, from when I thought we need a battler a few years ago, it was further from the truth, we are lacking a midfielder who can hold onto the ball and create those intelligent passes when scholes is not there, when cleverly was fit and on form, he was giving united that ability, and united were destroying sides, because we could hold onto the ball, I do think a modric type player will go a long way to solving those problems. We saw the benefits of the midfield we had between 06/08, when it was scholes/carrick, we won the back to back titles, and a european cup

  58. Clint-Iamyourpapii says:

    Fergie is the boss -

I’m saying we’d need a battler for that crazy 3-5-2 formation, in the current system I agree with you 100% we’d need that ball retaining midfielder that just sticks to the ball, a guy that is just like a magnet and pulls the ball towards wherever he is moving.

Guys like Scholes,Xavi,Iniesta, Pirlo, Silva have this quality where the ball and those around them want to give up the ball to them and pass it too them, they have this gravitational pull towards the ball and always seem to find it, rarely any players have this, not even Fabregas or Marchisio etc do imo or De Rossi,Gerrard, Cabaye,Cleverley yet.

Thiago Alcantara in my opinion does but he operates to much in a forward position, I have watched Modric and I’d say he’d the fit mould of the player we need but as I said a few weeks ago…..I think we are being played with by the media and being naive. I don’t we will go in for Modric simply because of Daniel Levy and trouble he brings.

  59. denton davey says:

fitb @ 01:32: ” I do think a modric type player will go a long way to solving those problems.”

I think he’d be a move in the wrong direction; first, he’s waaaay over-rated and, second, he’s not what’s missing. NoFletch/NoWin

Clint @ 01:19: ” we are still crying out for a centre midfielder, plus this formation would take away our traditional width because of what it asks of the midfield to do”

I don’t disagree with your first point about a centre midfielder (see above) BUT I really disagree with the second point about “traditional width”. It seems to me that this kind of formation – which really shifts according to the situation from a 3-5-2 to a 5-3-2, depending on whether the ‘wing-backs” (for argument’s sake, we’ll say Valencia and NinjaEvra) are forward on attacking duty or back defending. Similarly, it seems to me that Michael Carrick is essentially playing as part of the “3″ most of the time, either sweeping or shielding in concert with the two regular central defenders (again, for argument’s sake, let’s say CaptainVidic and Rio/BigManSmalling). What about the “3-2″ ? To me, that’s where it gets interesting – let’s say that the “2″ are some combination of TheWayneBoy, Chicharito, and DannyTheLad; so that would mean that the “3″ would be Nani, KagawaBunga, and Ashley Young.

While this “formation” would go a long way towards optimizing the attacking potential of the two wing-backs and the five attackers, it would be vulnerable to counter-attacking UNLESS the two wing-backs are defensively cognizant of their dual roles and not simply going for the jugular. In the match today, Italy were caught out once or twice when Croatia got the ball forward very quickly but having “3″ in the middle forced the Croatian attackers wide or shooting from distance.

Sure, this is not a safety-first organization but it is actually pretty close to how SAF frequently deploys the troops. Michael Carrick is no longer the player who roams forward but is much more likely to keep himself in the area between the defence and the attacking midfield. When TheGingerNinja plays, it seems that Michael Carrick does roam more widely but that’s because Scholes just can’t cover the ground that he used to do so, in effect, what we see is these two guys holding themselves back and, quite often, in each other’s way rather than acting in a complementary fashion.

I’d like to be more coherent about this but I do think that UTD have the players to make this kind of system work – the three wing-backs (Valencia/NinjaEvra and Rafael) are superior to the guys Italy put onto the field; UTD’s collection of central defenders are better than Chielini and Bonucci if they can stay healthy enough to form stable partnerships; Daniele De Rossi is a much more “macho” player than Michael Carrick but even though I’m a huge fan of DDR I’m not sure that he’s that much more effective in this role than Michael Carrick has proven himself to be. The big question-mark is whether – or not ! – UTD have someone like Andrea Pirlo who can act as a fulcrum – he’s a fantastic player and was simply outstanding again today. I”d like to think that KagawaBunga and YoungTom can do something like what Pirlo does. I’m a huge fan of three of the other four – Nani, TheWayneBoy, and DannyTheLad but not completely won over by Ashley Young.

So, I think that the shifting 3-5-2/5-3-2 is an interesting way to make optimum use of the talent at UTD nowadays – give me a fit, healthy DarrenFletcherinho and I might change my mind BUT that’s another story, eh ?

  60. cubs says:

This guy isAwesome I see why he is so loved!

Hello all you pencil neck geeks.

  61. Jeet says:

Ha, when Denton and I talked of deploying 3-5-2 against Barca in the Cl finals, we were laughed off the blog by you lot! Now that the Mafiosi used it stifle Los Bastardos, everyone’s talking about it – well what do you know, you got a couple of tactical geniuses, the greatest armchair strategists of your generation, right here on RoM!!

If we had to play 3-5-2 today, here’s how I would go about it:
    DDG
    Smalling Rio Vidic
    Rafael Jones Carrick Fabio
    Kagawa
    Rooney Welbeck

Big apologies to all the United wingers, but I don;t see any of them offering enough defensively, not even valencia, though there is a fair chance that he and one of Young/Nani will have to come on after 60 minutes, because the twins would have run themselves ragged by then (remember Le Arse FA Cup).

The weak link in that team is of course the Carrick-Jones duo. Basically the roles of those two are
    a) deep lying playmaker and
    b) box-to-box beast

Instead of Carrick-Jones if you had Scholesy of 5 years back and a Keanoesque beast (alternatively Pirlo/DeRossi), then I tell you, that would have been some mutherfucking team.

All now bow down and pay obesiance to my visionary thinking – all together now, “fergie, Fergie sign him up!” ;)

  62. Jeet says:

…and ohh, Modric did look grossly overrated yesterday…I am becoming increasingly sceptical of what he would add to United, should we get him….

  63. Jeet says:

…and I am not sure if you should ever use that 3-5-2 against teams that like to play wide with genuine top quality wingers – but then very few teams apart from United have that today…Bayern maybe…

  64. Jeet says:

“…and if any one of you motherfuckers got anything to say, NOW is the fucking time!!!”….GRRRR!!!!

  67. CedarsDevil says:

Ever get the feeling that you’re talking to yourself? I guess I should ask Jeet!!

  68. Jeet says:

Good morning, and screw you Cedars

Anyway, I dont hold a candle to Zibbie aka Cubs aka Dick when it comes to talking to self….

  69. CedarsDevil says:

    Jeet

Ha ha ha…..Too right about Zibbie, when he gets going he GETS going!!

Right where were we, oh Modric…..Never really thought that highly of him and I am not just basing that on his non performance yesterday…..Tricky little player no doubt but seems to have a lot of off days….Besides we’ve got Kagawa now

  70. CedarsDevil says:

On the 3 5 2 thingy……I am guessing that is 3 central defenders with both full backs bombing down the wings……When defending that becomes 5 3 2 right?

Cannot see United playing that formation, we would have no width whatsoever……

For those proclaiming themselves geniuses for suggesting this before I say think again, its way too negative and provides no flair…………Keeping Valencia, Young and Nani out makes no sense

  71. 0161-Jon says:

The Sunderland one comes close but this one for me, against the scousers in the final:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz9ulOKhJ-c

  72. samuel - united WE stand says:

Modric wasn’t great in the first half because the brilliant pirlo was orchestrating everything, in fact italy dominated. Second half, bilic changed tactics and moved modric further forward, i thought he played well. Linking up play, cutting in and rifling shots. What we have to know is, against top class opposition, the best players can’t always show what they have. Italy are renowned for stifling creative players. Modric however will face the ultimate test against the slick passing spanish. Xavi, iniesta, alonso and co. I think he’ll be busy chasing shadows and again, that doesn’t give an indication of your quality but i’m sure a lot of people will roll out the usual “He’s crap”.

  73. Jeet says:

    @Cedars:

I am not so sure about 3-5-2 being “negative” – if you have Kagawa-Rooney-Welbeck and an exciting box-to-box player, it can be pretty good attacking-wise. Last time we played that way was because our backline was decimated by injuries, and we beat the then german champions away from home by 3 to zip, with Mikey Owen getting a fantastic hattrick…

You are right in saying that it would be a waste of our talent on the wings, so I would deploy it only as a special case when the usual formulae are very unlikely to work…The only time I would suggest it strongly would be when we play Barca (as much as I hate the bastards, they ARE special)…don’t know if we will get a chance against them anytime soon, but in 2011 it was obvious that we would need to be a bit “negative” if we were to have a realistic chance at beating them…but then again, you just can’t change everything for one big game without players really having trained at playing the formation. I understand that.

  74. Jeet says:

@Samuel: I only watched till 55 min or thereabouts so you could be right…

  75. samuel - united WE stand says:

If jones plays in midfield next season then it would indicate united have not learnt any lessons. We want to dominate games and you put a centre-half in midfield because he has enthusiasm and energy. While we’re at it, why not bring back robbie savage and play him at centre half.

I’m tired of watching players forced into roles they’re not effective at, buy a proper central midfielder. Yeah, one that can actually control the tempo of a game and apply quality with their passing skills, tactical awareness, intelligent reading of the game e.t.c. If united can’t buy one then promote from within.

  76. CedarsDevil says:

    Sammy Sam Samuel

I doubt anyone with half a brain would say that Modric is crap……Personally I do not think he is an ‘excellent’ player though….Seen him way too many times in the league and to be honest I was never left with the ‘wow’ factor

  77. samuel - united WE stand says:

I think FERGIE now knows he needs to be flexible with his tactics. 4-4-2 is a rigid formation, best implemented when the opposition haven’t flood the middle in order to dominate the game. I don’t think you necessarily need width from wingers, full-backs can provide it in a 3-5-2, 5-4-1 or whatever. In some game, you probably need that magic and ability to open up defences from midfield. Wingers can be nullified hence why we at times look devoid of ideas last season. If we have creative playmakers, then they can open up the tightest of defences with an assist or goals because whipping in crosses isn’t always effective and teams can stop the supply to players out wide But in midfield, it’s unpredictable. Anyway i think FERGIE is clearly building a team with flexibility, pace, interchanging e.t.c. We clearly look we might have a plan A and B which is, united either bamboozle teams with the wingers or they carve teams through the centre. Very intriguing to see how that works out But it’s great.

  78. CedarsDevil says:

    Jeet

I see where you’re coming from mate, perhaps calling the formation negative was over board….It will of course mean that we will have to play through the middle, may as you say with Kagawa and hopefully a fit Clev it could work……..I would still like to see us play with wingers, always was the United way and to be honest I would rather teams worry when they played us as opposed to the other way around

  79. samuel - united WE stand says:

Cedars – I personally agree he’s not a world beater but i can see he’s technically gifted. I’m not sure his role of pulling the strings in midfield is best to show the wow factor but you may be right, maybe he needs to impose himself more. I think environment he surrounds himself with at spurs doesn’t help in terms of showing true qualities, maybe he would flourish amongst players with a step higher in quality. I wouldn’t recommend he joins united but he’s a very good player, perhaps a player just needing that extra belief in order to elevate.

  80. Jeet says:

Ohh, Cedars – totally agree about United and wingplay… :)

Jones needs to be given a fixed position ASAP. I think his preferred position is CB but I feel he could do the job of defensive midfielder also. I have never liked Jones playing at RB reason being he tends to drift in a central position more often than not. I actually hoped to see Jones play in defensive midfield role for england in euros.

3-5-2 looks good but it can be dangerous. One mistake by the midfielder will see us conceding goal. Kagawa will play as a second striker. So it would be interesting to see what Sir Alex does with our line Up.

  85. Harish says:

Modric is a decent midfielder but the question is Do we need him. He is not good defensively and neither has the art of scoring goals. Yeah he can make goals but that job will also be done by Kagawa now. I doubt if we will sign him.

  86. MG says:

A note for a couple of mates here………….

For Mike – Fuck off city, fuck off city, fuck off city………..Glad you got the suit for Saturday pal…..

For James – Come ON England

For me – Fuck off you sheep shagging cunts!!!

  88. Jeet says:

    Question for you all:

If funds/availability were not a problem, but you were constrained to sign just ONE more player for United this season, who would it be? If you are torn by indecision, you could say “One out of X,Y or Z”.

  89. CedarsDevil says:

I keep hearing on the news that president x called president y and had a chat!!! What the fuck do they talk about???

  90. CedarsDevil says:

    Jeet

No doubt I would go with Z…………Always fascinated me

  91. Jeet says:

@MG: Take it easy. I have pretty weak eyes myself, and got a right scare a few months back when I was playing footie and someone smashed a shot right over my glasses (the travails of us courageous defenders, aah… ). Sparklers in front of watery eyes for a minute but then I went back in. Trouble was I started getting pretty bad aches a week after that. Had to get tests done which cost a bomb, but luckily it was nothing more than some light bruising. No taking chances with eyes.

  92. Jeet says:

Cedars, you fucker, you got me again

  93. Jeet says:

…The only good thing that came out of it was around 10 minutes chat with a very pretty doc, but then I’m sure MG knows more about pretty docs than I’ll ever learn in mutliple lifetimes

  94. CedarsDevil says:

Pretty Docs?? Fuck me sideways, had this really hot dentist that I used to visit…..Never had a problem with my teeth but the thought of her pressing her breasts against me as she ‘looked’ into my mouth was worth the money every time

  95. WillieRedNut says:

352? I would write a letter to SAF expressing my disgust if we went down this road….. Besides, Fergie is a flat back 4 boss! I see where it could benefit the twins, but you would also need CH’s who are comfortable on ball. Rio and Evans are our best 2 ball playing CH’s. Vidic is a beast. Brilliant at attacking the ball, but not the greatest at bringing the round thing out of defense. Jones and Smalling aren’t there yet either. For that reason lads, I’m out! :P

  96. Jeet says:

@Cedars: I once had a goddamn pretty dentist too…she was to die for. I wasn’t even married then, so seriously contemplated asking her out a couple of times. But the thought of what might happen if she got offended (perfectly possible in Indian culture), always stopped me

  97. CedarsDevil says:

    Jeet

She would have drilled your fucking brain mate!! ha ha ha ha

  98. Jeet says:

…instead of Ol Polly here doing the fucking drilling

  99. CedarsDevil says:

You fucking beauty………..We see eye to eye…..Another reason for loving the day lights out of you??

Italy have failed to record a win in any of their last 6 games in major international tournaments.

Spain have now scored 43 goals in the Euro final competition. Only Germany(58), Holland(56), France(47) have scored more.

Spain’s 4-0 win over Ireland was their biggest Euro championship win, surpassing the 4-1 and 3-0 wins over Russia in Euro ’08.

    Happy birthday to Oliver Kahn,

what a brilliant goal keeping Legend!!

  106. Jeet says:

Evening, Sandeep. No news on Kolkata match, my friend called up AIFF and WB Sports Ministtry – nobody knows nothing…can’t find anything on the net either. With each passing day it seems less likely :(

  107. dannysoya LOVES SIAN MASSEY says:

@denton davey I did not put Nani in there because I personally don’t think we would be getting the best out of him down the middle. Nani is more of a winger than an attacking midfielder. Same with Robben, Ribery, Valencia, Ashley Young. if you play ANY of them down the middle you will not see their best performance. This is what happened to Young in the first game against France. but your formation could work if we have the defensive discipline of the Italians and we put two balls of energy at the Wing Back positions.

  110. Drewgen says:

For my 2 cents worth, I think this 3-5-2 idea is worth at least a shot. Evra has always been far stronger offensively so would make a good left wing back, and Valencia has the stamina to charge up and down that right flank all day. In Smalling, Jones, Rio and Evans we have very good ball playing defenders, three of whom have experience at full back so would have to knowledge to get across and cover if the wing backs get caught out too far up the pitch. For me, I’d have Welbeck up top and 2 from Rooney, Kagawa, Nani and Young in behind him.
    De Gea
    Smalling-Vidic-Evans
    Valencia-Carrick-Cleverly-Evra
    Rooney or Nani-Kagawa or Young
    Welbeck
This would also give Nani a chance to play more centrally, which i know is something alot of people are crying out for.
I know this is extremely unlikely to ever happen, but just an interesting tactical thought. Plus it works a treat on Football manager =P

  111. Drewgen says:

Basically I’m thinking a 1990s Brazil style formation – Cafu and Roberto Carlos certainly weren’t defensively minded!
Swap the central midfield pair depending on preference/fitness/new signings

  112. denton davey says:

Jeet @ 11:03: “If funds/availability were not a problem, but you were constrained to sign just ONE more player for United this season, who would it be? If you are torn by indecision, you could say “One out of X,Y or Z”.”

Simple – DDR or Schweini. BUT De Rossi is a Roman and Schweini is a Bavarian so neither one is “available” – and both have recently re-upped for huge money and long term contracts.

In the real world, it seems to me that finding a way to get the most out of the current squad is probably more important than importing another new player. That’s why I suggested (in the wee small hours) that the Italian 3-5-2/5-3-2 might be something good “to think with”.

  113. denton davey says:

WillieRedNut @ 11:17: “Fergie is a flat back 4 boss!”

To date, yes. BUT one of the reasons why SAF is such a great manager is that he isn’t stubborn about players or formations – he’s a WilyOldFootieKnight and he seems to be setting up his squad to play in a different manner. We saw a hint of that at the beginning of last season before injuries just blew up in his face. With the signing of KagawaBunga it sure looks like he has “different” in mind for now and the future. Also, he can’t watch his old buddy, Woy, without seeing how badly Ingerland fare against more “sophisticated” schemes.

  114. JC says:

It’s not like we weren’t playing with 3 at the back for much of many of our games anyway with Evra way upfield out of position to cover. /snark

  115. Red Neck says:

Is it just me, but according to the BBC commentators, Gerrard had a great first half ?

  116. Red Neck says:

Rio would have got to that.

  117. Red Neck says:

Walcotts first touch and they say he’s got Sweden worried. WHTF.

  118. Red Neck says:

Wallcot changed the game and won it. Oh for fucks sake.Gerrard, Terry, world beaters, and to top it all Ashley young is singled out for fault for one of the goals. Pure comedy gold.
