Diouf Pinches Welbeck’s Place… And Darren Reaps The Rewards

Like Danny Welbeck did last season, Mame Biram Diouf scored on his home debut for Manchester United, in last week’s 3-0 win over Burnley.

Sir Alex Ferguson has now decided to keep him in the squad, whilst Welbeck, whose last performance was his fairly dreadful outing against Leeds, which lead to him being subbed before an hour played, has been shipped off to Preston on loan.

Darren Ferguson, Preston’s new manager, has spoken about the deal.

“Danny is a young lad who has played quite a few games for United this season,” Ferguson junior. “He’s got fantastic potential. I think it helped with United going out of the FA Cup – they wanted him to go out and get experience. He’ll come here and get games, and I’m sure he’ll show the right attitude because of where he’s come from.”

Kiko came back from injury last thursday
diouf scored 3 in that game
    Berbatov is here to stay
    Rooney is Rooney
if Owen gets kept on next season to keep playing the role he’s playing and accepted he’d play before he signed and
If Preston works out for Wellbeck I can se dad helping son out with a cheap deal in the summer

  2. King Eric says:

Best thing for Danny really. Hope he gets some games under his belt and impresses the way Cleverley has at Watford.

  3. sppibsihmkcrkg says:

think this is right move for the lad, get a run of games in his prefered position. Any one who judges him solely on an out of position showing against leeds is foolish. Although loan move for united youngster now is normally first steps to transfer

  4. keano77 says:

Good move for Danny too. I think he´ll be a premiership striker of the future. With wich team I can´t say?

  5. Costas says:

He needed it at this point. It doesn’t do him much good to stay in his comfort zone at United. Just like Jonny Evans in 07-08, Danny has to go to a smaller club and toughen up a bit. I rate him highly as a player and hopefully he will come back next season a better player. And hopefully, he will play as a striker at Preston.

Good move for danny,hp he can get him self in d score sheet regularly.wish him best.

  7. afromanc says:

It had to happen. Diouf really looks like something special. A striker with the ability to turn and out pace defenders is exactly what we need. Think him and Rooney will be great upfront together. Bring on the citeh scum!!

  8. willierednut says:

Great move for danny, the championship is a good league for him to earn his stripes.

Talking of strikers hope this is true.

  10. trevor says:

With regards to Welbeck i think he has to toughen up a little and has some filling out to do!

Plying his trade at Preston is a fantastic idea and loads of first team football will do him the world of good in a real enviroment!

I dont rate Reserve football the same as the experience gained in the Championship!

  11. trevor says:

I am sure some will have a quibble about Players going to preston.> Fergie is only helping his son.. Blah Blah BLah..

I find this plus point!! Not much differnt to him playing in the reserves realling. Will get honest feedback from Fergie Junior, Gaurentee of First team Games & also ensured Danny will be given good treatment.

We previously have had failed Loan Deals, poor Frazer Campbell wasted his time at Spurs, Rossie wasted his time at Newcastle!..> Get em into the championship where they are guarenteed games & to be kicked!

  12. Giles Oakley says:

I hope he comes back bigger, tougher, more experienced, and ready to play for United again. Not all loan deals end in leaving United, viz Beckham and Jonny Evans. I think Danny Boy’s got a lot of raw talent and skill and it’ll come back to haunt us if he gooes elsewhere…

  13. Tony Starks says:

ghtt.. you saying Welbeck will be sold in the summer? – I highly doubt that, hes got too much potential to be sold just like that… the guy needs games and this is a perfect move…

  14. Lexxy says:

He will go and come back

  15. bigphil2003 says:

Welbeck just signed a 4 year deal in december so I don’t think selling him is high on the priorities.

  16. KingAbdullah says:

Sad that he won’t get to lift the League Cup

  17. Simply Red says:

If Welbeck cant score lots of goal in PNE…I think he is a decent striker…like Sylvain Ebanks Blake…sorry to say but it fact.

  18. Tony Starks says:

funny how people like Darron Gibson still get benefit of doubt from fans even in their near-mid twenties, but kids like Welbeck get written off before they turn 20…

  19. willierednut says:

    @Tony Starks

Ive seen gibbo get lots of stick on this blog from fans, its just not welbeck mate.

  20. Dave Mack says:

Tony Starks .. I think it is the reverse. Wellbeck isn’t being written off by this loan spell. SAF wants to see if he can develope …. he certainly needs to for me. On the other hand.. I see Gibson as a weak squad player and that his next move will be a permanent transfer.

  21. Tony Starks says:

@Dave Mack – yes agree totally, it’s just some people here seem to be saying Welbeck ain’t gona make it even before he’s out of his nappies…

  22. Giles Oakley says:

People forget how long it sometimes takes even for players who end up as ‘legends’ to fully develop and find their best position, including Bobby Charlton, who frequently got written off by restless and impatient fans and was dropped at intervals by the manager, or Nobby Stiles, who for ages had to play out of position as an inside right and was in-and-out of the team until clinching his place as a hunter-killer defensive midfielder. Or take Sammy McIlroy, who began as a less-than-prolific striker and ended up in midfield. Then there’s David Beckham who was actually quite patchy at first, ‘too slow’ on the wing etc. It’s particulary tough for strikers, as with Teddy Sheringham, and even Andy Cole (remember all those groans in his early days?). I know there are countless players who never made it, both kids and expensive purchases, but with all of them I can never understand why supporters don’t give them a break and get behind them. There are few players who play better because the fans have turned against them. The people who really annoy me are those whose priority seems to be proven right that so-and-so ‘isn’t up to it’, rather than supporting the team, whoever is playing. You can see it very clearly when it’s happening at another club. I can remember when I was at Highbury to see United a few years ago and the Gooners were getting on Sol Campbell’s back, as it were, calling him a ‘black c**t’ and screaming at him to ‘f**k off’ , until they took the lead and suddenly it was all ‘There’s only one Sol Campbell’ etc.

I hope Danny comes back a stronger player as it would be great to see him succeed, where so many promising strikers in the past have failed.

  23. aaron says:

I don’t think welbeck will be sold in the summer.. his status as a homegrown player will prb mean hes retained.. plus the kid has the talent to be a prem striker as some have said hopefully it will be with us.. always impt to have local boys playing in the team cos u noe the club means the world to them..

not that the non-locals wun grow to luv us too of cos

  24. rewind says:

Welbeck needs to use this loan to learn his trade, because when I see him play as a striker, he really frustrates me with his selfishness and poor decisions. There can be no doubt that he does have quality and I hope he goes and gets stronger aswell as he does get knocked off the ball far too easily!!

Should do him good, fingers crossed!

  25. jsyred says:

Welbeck is a youngster who needs to develop. What better way than first team regular football. He can only come back stronger and more confident for it and we will benefit in the long run. Let’s hope that he starts banging them in for fun at PNE. No one should write the lad off at this early stage in his career.

  26. giggs says:

sorry i hope he stays there myself. Think hes a bit greedy and hasnt much vision. I dont expect him back anytime soon.

  27. stretfordender says:

I think he needs this, but it could go one of two ways, he’ll struggle in the championship or he’ll be a revolation, we know he is very quick and can finish on occasion! He must improve his vision but I think he will with games under his belt. On another note, has anyone heard more about Ando? Stories coming out he missed training yesterday after being dropped on the weekend, doubt this is true as he seems like a great lad who loves the club, but, like Nani, he must improve. So much potential and no excuses for the poor game at City wherre he got his wish in an advanced role.
