With Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Manchester United for Real Madrid, Eric Cantona is puzzled as to why any player would make the choice to move away from United.
“I can’t understand why he would want to leave United,” said Cantona. “For me the biggest club in the world is United. When you are at United, if you don’t have a problem with the club, if they give you the contract and if they really want you to play, then you can’t have any problems. I don’t understand why he’d want to leave. All the owners of clubs now are businessmen. I’m not sure if football was like this 20 years ago. I’m not sure these people would buy United or Chelsea or Liverpool then. When we see these kind of businessmen as owners of the clubs I’m not surprised that they don’t care about working-class fans.”

Cue I love Eric Cantona comments!
I love Eric Cantona.
There’s only one reason why Ronaldo wanted to go there, and it is not because they were his childhood team (Benfica was his childhood team). It’s because his Mother and his Father (especially him) wanted him to play for Real Madrid. He always stayed loyal to his parents.
If he wanted the money, he would of gone for another club like City or Barcelona.
He’s even said that he’ll come back to United one day, and SAF has said that. Probably both of them know exactly when that will happen
Drink-a-Drink-a-drink to Eric the King the King the King
real madrid are users rthey wont stay loyal to anyone or anything. The minute he starts to fade or there is a new shiny stone that catches their eye he will be back. Real madrid is a basket case of a club that is continually going through boom bust cycles and its only a matter of time.
Cantona’s got nothing to lose and everything to gain from making comments like these but we don’t need to villianize Ronaldo. He was a terrific signing for us, he brought success, money, tons of great moments and he’s shown a lot of class in what he’s said since he left.
Maybe while Eric grow up “his dream” was to come to Manchester and play for United but unfortunately for us it wasn’t Ronaldo’s and we can’t fault him for that. Let’s move on.
Why did he leave? Because he isn’t Cantona/Keane/Robson/Giggs. Simple enough. Sad too. Too bad for him. United will win more trophies than the clusterfuck. Thanks for the memories though.
Why did he leave King Eric? Because he was a man, not Cantona.
eric cantona must realise ronaldo is not like others like gjggs and himself along with solkjaer, ronaldo sees the likes of madrid and barcelona has the club of clubs. he is a latin player who sees idols like figo zidane ronaldo who have played in spain and that is where it is and he wants to match that. also he is a family man and they wanted him to play there and they are closer to madrid than manchester and the weather is better and city, the story in january 2008 if his mother wanting ronaldo playing for madrid was the turning point in the future of ronaldos mind made up. plus a better bank balance.
you cant blame the guy he is like an eagle he wants to spread his wings and see something different. also he wants to get a different taste on a different league and challenge himself. it is like us do we want to play the same old computer game or do the same routine no it gets boring. he also felt he was doing it for the best of united that he may have lost his desire playing for united after completing his legacy at united and it would not have helped man utd.
Cantona is the king no doubt but we have to move on Ronaldo is his own man who makes his own decisions not like couldnt CARless about the fans Tevez. it’s all about 09/10 not any other season we have a fresh set of heroes to worship (except maybe MO still don’t feel comfortable with that). C’mon united for the quadruple and knockin liverpool off there bar stool once and for all.
Encouraged not burdened by the history that they create, they know what is expected of them. The Are Manchester United
lol @ costas
As Ronaldo put it(describing his feelings after winning last year’s CL) – there was nothing else left to achieve in England.
His mum was pictured in Real Madrid shirts in summer 2008 – it was inevitable I guess.
When he trademarked CR9 early 2009 – we chose to ignore it, sticking our heads in the sand – all the signs were there, despite him saying United was his home.
Would have him back without a doubt, but can’t see him returning. How much would they want for a start??
Micky the only way ronaldo could possibly return is he only signs this contract with madrid like beckham done in 2003 when he only signed 1 contract. and ronaldo when he hits 30 he will become a free on 2015 which almost impossible. or madrid see nani has a world beater or someone else coming through and they want to flog ronaldo off to get that player if ronaldo starts going down hill.
@manutdchampions2008
All due respect to Ronaldo, but surely we won’t want him aged 30?
Ronaldo has been and forever will be a great player for man utd. He`s gone with the biggest blessing a player ever has left with and we wish him luck and will miss him. We move on and we have a great team with the mighty rooonster at our helm,God bless man utd and all the great players we still have. Don`t miss what we`ve lost, be grateful for what we have. We could be Man City with their temporary fame!
Micky what makes ronaldo such a special player and unique is his versitlity. when united only had rooney and tevez fit in the 07/08 season with saha broke if one of those 2 was injured you can stick ronaldo upfront has a striker and make it rooney and ronaldo upfront. when ronaldo is 30 he will be an out an out striker. he will have lost some of his key assets like his devestating pace which now is already on the waine, I think ronaldo already has lost a yard of pace from his operation back in summer 2008 which has slowed him down. his quick movement that would have gone also, but he would have picked some other talents on the way like his goals and one thing that will never escape ronaldo is his ability to take free kicks. so yes a ronaldo at 30 I will still take in a heart beat he will still bag 20 goals a season, are you saying berbatov at 30 should not be a united player. age is not a factor its the qualitys the player can still give.
seems to me he was answering seperate questions, one about ronaldo, one about owners.
Eric Cantona = LEGEND!
6 years from now we will have moved so far ahead that Ronaldo won’t even fit in anymore. It doesn’t work like that. Two things can happen with Ronaldo, he can either be a huge success or he will decline into a has-been. The success is unlikely but supposing it happens there is no reason for him to leave or for RM to let him go. And if he is in decline why the hell would we want him?
It’s time to move on. United are bigger than anyone and as a club we will get better and stronger. Our future as far as I am concerned has nothing to do with Ronaldo.
Nothing else to achieve in England = only thinks of his own selfish ambition
It’s not that hard to understand why he’d want to leave, assuming Real really is his dream club. If any of us were footballers, of course we’d leave any other team in the world if it meant coming to United. The only thing that’s difficult to understand is why he’d be in love with Real in the first place. I can’t imagine how anyone respects them at this point, with their pathetic practice of buying everyone else’s stars rather than figuring out how to cultivate their own. It warms my heart to see them trying to compete with their hodgepodge of a team against Barcelona’s sublime harmony of homegrown talent and a few foreign purchases.
I love King Eric.
PS:How do you guys stay awake till so early in the morning?
Ohh Ahh Cantona !
@theboogeyman : last night was Sat dude. its party time. but one thing i know about King Eric (not the real one), that he sleeps on the sofa and gets up in the middle of the night and posts a comment here, lol
Long live the king.
Thanks for posting this. Always a good thing to see Cantona’s name & thoughts. Especially when I agree with him 100%.
i believe ron wen he says that he left bcoz he won everything.also he wanted to be closer to his family.fair enough.atleast he helped us win somany title in last 3 years.thanks for everything ron.we will miss u
If i was the best footballer in the world and playing for a big club like Barca or Madrid. It would be my dream to play for United and i would do every thing i could to make that dream come true. Ronalaldo is a madrid fan and he is following his dream.
I was always shit at football though.
the big day has finally arrived.the quest for 4 in a row and record 19th title begins today. my prediction .unconvincing 2-1 win.berba and micky owen to scre
God has spoken!
I fucking love that man!
The king has spoken, but i think it’s important to realize that for Ronaldo United was never his dream club. It was always a massive step in the right direction, perhaps the penultimate step towards what he considered his ultimate goal. Yes. I know it sucks because madrid is despicable in many ways but most fans who knew Ronaldo always realized that he was always going to leave for Madrid one day.
he[ronaldo] can neva be bigger than united that was wat he was begining 2 feel.d unite player around him made him wat he is especially fergie n wayne rooney but he had always love madrid i still love him though
The king understands football
Ronaldo went to Madrid because he is a greedy twat.
United should never allow him back even if he sensationally flops at Madrid and begs to return at cut down price. He burned all the bridges by treating United and fans the way he did.
ronaldo was the biggest star of oldtrafford for last 3years no doubt but not necessary to be a the true legend like giggsy, keane, king Eric.he is physically a magnificent footballer but he is still immature as a man , so may be in the future realize it was the greatest mistake to leave man united.
Morning guys.
The Arsenal home game and Tevez’s antics seem ages ago. It’s a new age and we have to kick off with a win. We can’t start with a draw again.
We probably will,Costa.
Good morning,Costa and everyone else.
Ronaldo left because it was his boyhood dream to playu for Real Madrid.
Be careful what you wish for Ronnie.
King Eric is such a cool fucker and is incapable of ever saying the wrong thing. If I could write the future he would replace Sir Alex and would go on to be an even more succesful manager – he has no record as a manager but you wouldnt put it past him.
6-1 TODAY OFF TO A FLYER !!!!!!
Hi boogeyman.
It’s not often Cantona speaks about United, but whenever he does, he says something meaningful.
The fucking greatest living Frenchman!!
Also Ronaldo was hated in England. Thats the English way. If a Player plays for a rival club we despise him. And every club in the country think we are their rivals. No matter how small and insignificant we think they are. Every body hates United therefore every body hated Ronaldo.
Ronaldo Claimed that this didn’t affect him. He said it made him play better but thats not the point. I dont think he will meet such hatred in Spain. Ive spent quite a lot of time in Madrid over the last 5 years. (I have freinds there and will go anywhere for a free holiday). Whilst there is rivalry it doesn’t come close to what he had to put up with in England. If you talk to the average none United fan in the street and ask their opinion of Ronaldo and they will call him a cheat before they call him a great player.
Fergie bring him back !
