Europe this season: Finished 3rd in Group D behind Real Madrid and Lyon. Despite finishing on the same points as Lyon, they were knocked out on goal difference, after drawing both games against Lyon 0-0. Lyon beat Dinamo Zagreb 7-1 in one of the group stage games.

- Johan Cruyff’s old shirt number, 14, was retired by the club in honour of their legend.

- Like Spurs, Ajax are seen to have “Jewish roots” after their stadium was located next to the Jewish neighbourhood in the 1930s. Whilst their fans aren’t predominantly Jewish, they have embraced the connection and chant “Jews! Jews!” (Joden) at games.

- United played against Ajax in the 1st Round of the UEFA Cup in 1976. United lost 1-0 away but in front of 60,000 people at Old Trafford, won 2-0, thanks to goals from Macari and McIlroy. United played a team with an average age of 23-years-old that night, against the Dutch side who went on to be crowned Champions that season.

- “Ajax are a good team and I’ve never faced them in competitive European football,” said Ferguson. “I’m looking forward to it.”

- The first leg will take at the Amsterdam ArenA on Thursday 16 February, KO 6pm (GMT), with the second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday 23 February, KO 8.05pm (GMT).

I fancy us to go through easily, Dutch football is great at national level but ordinary at domestic.

  2. Saad says:

    Hope we crush them.

  3. Saad says:

We beat them when we met them in 1976. Lost 0-1 away and won 2-0 at home.

  7. thecrazywolfe says:

While we’re at it, could we maybe take Eriksen with us..?

  8. Costas says:

Didn’t expect our first official meeting with them ion decades to be in the Europa League, but it’s an attractive tie.

  9. keegan4england says:

Brass, Heineken and United, Oh Amsterdam is wonderful

  10. smartalex says:

Ajax are great European competitors with a proud history. A wonderful tie.

I repeat my views expressed on a different thread:

Most clubs in Europe will only dream of the heady heights of winning the Europa League. It would be churlish and vain for us to consider it in any other light than a serious opportunity to win a major trophy. We don’t value it as highly as the Premiership, but no competition is as important to United as the League.

We’re in it to win it.

  11. WillieRedNut says:

The Red army will be elevating their minds in Amsterdam! :) Wink, wink. ;)

  12. wayne says:

All we need to know it’s in Amsterdam degenerates dream, who gives a flying fuck about the EL,good fucking tie for the fans who like to PARTY

  13. Bring Back Ruud says:

I’m going to the away game fuck it. I can’t pass up on the chance to see United AND get totally STONED!

  14. lordrt says:

Another tough tie waiting, hope this time the lads dont screw it up.. and a good opportunity to assess Eriksen’s talent as well :)

  15. dela says:

The only problem I had with the Europa was the fact that we’d be travelling halfway across the world to play minnows like Lech Poznan and Trabzonspor.

Drawing Ajax really is fantastic. Great club. Great history. And I will finally get to watch Christian Eriksen in action.

  16. slim says:

saw a thread on Utd.com. Question was would you swap Rooney for a yonger Paul Scholes say a 23/24 year old Paul.

I would. In a heart beat

On topic, Akax are a great side and i still think the young players should get a run, no harm in mixing the senior players with 3 up and coming youngsters. E.g Ravel playing left, Pogba and Jones in Midfield, Berba and Danny or Berba and Will Keane, Fryers at LB. Gives the gaffer a chance to play these lads

  17. kevin says:

yes, Ajax can be considered to be European giants. They have a good history as Smartalex. We have a game on our hands. They have their old players as coaches and I believe they will be up for this one.

  18. kevin says:

slim, well said on the young Scholes.

  19. smartalex says:

Surely every broadcaster of the Europa League is overjoyed we’re in it, and is praying that we go all the way to the final. Hopefully we’ll get pro-United commentators for a change.

  20. slim says:

    kevin

i miss him, watched an interview on how he’s getting on with the reserves couldn’t help reminiscing

  21. WillieRedNut says:

Ajax have a great European pedigree. 4 times champions of Europe. Really looking forward to the two games. It’s a top champions league tie, in all but name. I’m sure our fans will be in full voice!

  22. wayne says:

Think Utd should just treat it like the carling cup, play 2nd stringers if we win it fine,if not it doesn’t become a distraction for the Prem

  23. giggs12gerrard0 says:

Still cant go over the dissapointment, its a shit competion, shit day for Football, Channel 5 and ITV fucking 4 its a complete joke…….

That said I have booked my hotel for Bucharest will opt in all home games so I can get a ticket for the final and currently looking at Amsterdam

    United United United

  24. giggs12gerrard0 says:

She wore she wore she wore a scarlet ribbon she wore a scarlet ribbon in the merry month of May
and when I asked, why she wore that ribbon, she shaid she wore it for United and were going to Bucharest

Bucharest Bucharest were the famous Man United and were going to Bucharest……………

Who the fuck are Man United, as the reds go marching on on on……….

  25. Balls of Steel says:

My Dutch friends say Anita is their best player. One to watch out for.

  26. Mikekelly12 says:

    Should be a great tie.
    Slim
Was that even a serious question? I’d swap a fit and injury free Scholes for Rooney every day of the week. Wouldn’t everyone? My second all time favourite United player.

  27. Gary says:

Well on the poll on Rooney and Scholes it’s a bit of a silly one in all honesty seeing as they play in different positions. I can’t see Rooney contributing more to United’s success come the end of his career than Scholes though and of course I’ll never love Rooney like I do with Scholes. Paul Scholes was arguably the greatest creative centre midfielder of his generation along with Zidane and Pavel Nedved, I feel privelaged to have seen him live so many times. Rooney’s form is too inconsistent for him to ever really be considered a world great, through out his United career he has spells of 3 to 5 months where he completely loses form and that is what seperates him from the greatest ever. Personally I want to see him playing out and out up top like the 2009/10 where he proved that’s where he is at his best. I don’t want to see him picking the ball up of Carrick in the centre circle with his back to goal, he’s bloody wasted doing that!

  28. kevin says:

Slim, what I like about our born and bred players is their humility and spirit. The others seem to turn it on and off.
Wayne,This is a top tie. We cant be embarrased and playing our Carling team will give us that.

  29. WillieRedNut says:

Balls of Steel – Anita? Is she fit? ;)

  30. wayne says:

Just want to thank all the lads giving support to me yesterday, getting into personnel shit like that makes me uncomfortable tbh.
Day finished great 20mins from home after a 12 hr drive, rear ended a car and totaled mine, fucking unbelievable

  31. Mikekelly12 says:

    Wayne
It was all heart felt. Shit news on the motor, you ok ? Let’s hope the boys can give you something to smile about Sunday.

  32. wayne says:

kevin if we play our carling cup team and get beat don’t see it being a big deal mate.If Utd play 1st team and get beat that would be embarrasing.Just can’t see Sir Alex playing a strong team on a Thursday and risking burn out for the Prem

  33. smartalex says:

Terrible news wayne! fuck it man, hurdles that you don’t need. Sorry brother.
I suppose that no-one was hurt? Thank goodness no alcohol or anger seen to be involved.
    Better days ahead, my friend!

  34. wayne says:

Mike thanks mate yeah i’m fine i’d ridden the car into the ground anyway had 320,000kms on it,adjuster will write it off and i’ll end up getting something back, just a pain in the ass xmas week

  35. avishek says:

    great tie.

    no space for being complacent……..

not sure if the youngsters will come in handy in these kind of games….

  36. Dandivine7 says:

I personally think this(Europa League) will help the likes of Jones, Cleverley and Welbeck for future Champions League Campaigns. Its always good to look on the bright side . Think of this, compete in the Champions League and crash out in the semi, or Win the Europa League, Premier League and FA Cup. Its very very possible with all due respect to the teams in the competition.

  37. wayne says:

smartalex thanks mate, everything is cool, get this though the woman i hit had the same birthdate, what’s the odds on that.

  38. Dandivine7 says:

Expect Lindergaard to play more. I think We’ll see a mixed lineup in the Europa like 7 first team and 4 young players or 6 :5 as the games roll in. I believe it will be very Useful for Our Young players to have European experience too. Its helped the Young guys at Spurs too, Livermore etc

  39. Bili Albania says:

i just don’t believe that we want to win this competition. So it will be nice to watch those games…

  40. Gary says:

The youngsters will definitely come in handy in these kind of games. If we’re not going to play them in these kind of matches then when are we going to play them? It’s about getting the right balance between youth and maturity and Fergie has been pretty damn good at it. Cleverley, Jones, Smalling and Welbeck will play in these games believe it.

  41. giggs12gerrard0 says:

    @Wayne

so you rear ended a women today and you feel down?

It’s only on my birthday am I afforded that luxury with Mrs Giggs12

  42. smartalex says:

The odds are close to 1:364 which is four-fifths of fuck all.

I’ll bet your horoscope says that it’s an uneventful day for you.

Maybe you should accidentally bump and grind her rear more frequently?
    Birthdays, perhaps?

  43. FletchTHEMAN says:

Couldn’t be better. One of the crown jewels of European Football and also one of the shortest flights for the lads. It will be easy to get the entire team, the fans and even the pundits very excited about this match up.
So delaying the ignomy of a draw to uzbekistans or somat (no disrespect to our Uzbek suport!).

Ajax are a team with history. They are a massive club……… unlike cittay in every way.

    Off topic:
New Chant GrowUpBalotelli!BaloBalotelli! GrowUpBalotelli!BaloBalotelli! With mates like Richards, who needs enemies! Why not come and play for us! HAHAHAHA

  44. wayne says:

@giggs 12 lol, i guess that’s just life any contact with a woman normally ends up costing money

  45. smartalex says:

As a football fan you get to watch a certain number of games involving your team. As United fans we get far more games than most. In that way at least, we are fortunate for the parachute into the Europa. The fringe players too, are reliant on a heavy United workload to get more games.

  46. giggs12gerrard0 says:

    @Wayne

Correct mate its my bday but to get lucky I need to get her a present lol……

    Son> United > Wife

  47. dannysoya says:

COME ON BOYS!!! SMASH THE DUTCH MEN!!! might as well make the most out of our predicament. we should be in this to WIN IT.

  48. giggs12gerrard0 says:

    @Smartalex

Stop being so pragmatic and correct, the Europa league is shite and you are changing my mind with every sensible post :-)

  49. Mikekelly12 says:

Whoever pulls on that red shirt and goes out to play is going out to win. Every team sir alex prepares, he prepares to try and win. Who are we to dismiss a trophy with such disdain, we’re bigger than that surely. It’s a trophy were competing for because quite simply we weren’t good enough to win the other one so it’s a bit arrogant to suddenly dismiss the Europa as a tin pot trophy. Yes, people may not mind being knocked out but defeat to me will feel like any other defeat and mark my words, when we get to the semis, people will start thinking a bit differently.

  50. smartalex says:

Yeah! Fuck the Europa League will be shite as soon as we’re out. We want to play in a respectable competition, so let’s disrespect the one we’re in. I think, therefore I fail.

Oh well giggs12gerrard0, have some tequila and my sensible posts will become the insane rumblings of a blinkered fool that recedes into the background. Once more, your true feelings will fly, unhindered by the false-truths of a blatherer!

    Enjoy!

  51. smartalex says:

giggs12gerrard0 – Is it your birthday today?

  52. Mikekelly12 says:

    Smartalex
Your blatherings entertain the hell out of me! Blather on my friend, blather on.

  53. Utd4life says:

Great draw. Disappointed it’s not a CL draw. Anyways, I think SAF will play the fringe players and carling cup players for the EL. It should be a good learning experience for the likes of Fryers, Pogba and Morrison. Imagine getting european experience at such an early age, it would only do their careers a world of good.

  54. WillieRedNut says:

Mike – His blathering, is not bothering me! :)

  55. Captain Park says:

In addition to being a club with a strong tradition and history, more tradition and history than your chelseas and man cities and tottenhams, mind you, Ajax have European pedigree. Many of the Netherlands’ best players started their careers at Ajax and if we want to win the competition, we should never under estimate them.

  56. smartalex says:

    ok, ta G12g0

  57. Mikekelly12 says:

    Willie
Blather and blast. Maybe we can sort the loan deal out with Ajax for Macheda. Erikkson coming the other way possibly?!’

  58. smartalex says:

    oops, ta 12mikes

  59. Mikekelly12 says:

    Smartalex
No, thank you. So 12 days of Christmas? What were ther 12 of??

  60. smartalex says:

    CANTONAS! ! !

  61. samuel - united WE stand says:

Fergie has been singing paul pogba’s praises today, looks like he ain’t go anywhere, we might well see more of him, same with tunnicliffe who is on loan.

Great draw for united because ajax are a big team but if we underestimate them like we’ve done to teams in the champions league then an upset may be on the cards.

Eriksen, sulejmani and gregory van der weil are their best players, it’s relatively a young team so they’ll be a definite threat. Fergie will find it tricky between balancing his priorities in terms of the europa league and the premier league however i reckon he’ll mix youth and experience.

  62. WillieRedNut says:

Mike – If anyone could swing that mate, Fergie can! All it needs is the great man to have a word in Frankie De Boer’s ear hole! Careless whispers……wham!

  63. Mikekelly12 says:

11 CANTONAS 10 CANTONAS 9 CANTONAS 8 CANTONAS 7 CANTONAS 6 CANTONAS 5 CANTONAS 4 CANTONAS 3 CANTONAS 2 CANTONAS and an ERIC CANTONA!!!!! UNITED!!! UNITED!!!

  64. Ash says:

Great Draw for us. Will be a great experience for our young boys. Ajax are a lovely team .They play a great style of football.
    Lets play to win

  65. dannysoya says:

Ajax are a pretty good side and they would prolly have gotten thru to the round of 16 if not for some miraculous result by Lyon in Zagreb. We should be wary of them and Hopefully we put in a performance for the ages in both legs. We have to take this tournament seriously. We cannot dismiss it at all. We are one of the main crowd drawers left in the europa lge we have to take the tournament as seriously as everyone else. It will not only help United, it will also help the Europa lge too. I say we go out and try to win this trophy. COME ON UNITEDDD!!!

  66. Mikekelly12 says:

    Smartalex
Good answer pal. Sure fire way to spot a United fan this yule tide! Anyone who says 12 drummers drumming is a bitter!!!

  67. WillieRedNut says:

    Oh ah…………………………………………………………….Cantona!

  68. smartalex says:

Mikekelly12 – I enjoyed your belted out edition of the timeless classic!

Merry life to you, yours, one and all Reds, everywhere!

  69. CJ says:

I see certain individuals are taking the opposition lightly again.Making that mistake twice, would be dumb as that is the reason why we now have to play thursday nights. We’ll have to wait and for Fergie’s team he picks,to see how serious he is about this cup.Stats guys should correct me if im wrong, but i think UTD and Ajax are part of a few teams that achieved the treble(League, champsleague, cup). They gave Real a good scare in 2nd leg,had 2 goals dissalowed and a few dodgy decisions against them.Just sayin.

  70. Quiza says:

As good a tie as any champs league round of 16 game. Now I’l just pretend I’m watching d CL. Bring on d europa! Giggs…will…tear u
    ap-a-r-t…again!

  71. WillieRedNut says:

I miss papii’s input on the draw? He is one crazy cracker! :)

  72. Dakduivel says:

Really felt this one was coming!

I’m Dutch, from Amsterdam and my hometeam is AFC Ajax. But I also watch every United game I can and visit this blog almost every day (which is absolute quality by the way ;) ).. Man United are my favourite team outside Holland and I’m really lokking forward to the game. In my opnion this is the best possible outcome of the draw, I don’t like the EL one bit but now one of my favourite teams will move on no matter what. It isn’t really a big deal for either clubs so there’s no real pain after one loses, especially since United are likely to play with a lot of young lads.

Ajax is playing very poor football at the moment but things with United are also not as smooth as I would like them to be. With Eriksen and Vertonghen we got some players who will be able to compete but if nothing crazy happens United will go through. Anyhow, I really look forward to the game and hopefully I’m able to attend the first leg in Amsterdam. It would be absolutely stunning to go the OT game but given the expenses that’s not very likely to happen. :(

Oh, and if any of you lads wanna visit the greenery’s I highly recommend the Green House in Haarlemmerstraat. Haven’t got any experience with the Red Light ladies so I’ll leave that up to you. :D

  73. smartalex says:

Dakduivel, good to see you here again! We need lots more from you in the the next couple of months. Inside info and on-the-ground reporting please.

  74. Quiza says:

Dd any1 else notice hw tough n western English CL n EL opposition is?
    United-Ajax
    Citeh-Porto
    Stoke-Valencia Chelski-Napoli
    Le Arse-Milan.

  75. Costas says:

Heh, Lyon get a free pass in Zagreb to qualify in the last 16 and then they get Apoel as a reward. Ajax get screwed over against Real and end up in the Europa League where they get drawn against United. Platini’s Uefa…

  76. slim says:

Got a namesake in the Ajax team anyone like to hazard a guess.

  77. smartalex says:

Did anyone else notice that city’s name-tag was a little reluctant to join the big-guns in the Europa League? If you want to piss with the big dogs, they might see your tiny winkie.

  78. smartalex says:

List the players slim, that we might guess.

  79. Mikekelly12 says:

    Slim
    Dico Koppers??

  80. Mikekelly12 says:

    gregory-van-der-wile?

  81. smartalex says:

The Netherlands plays Belarus tonight at 19:30 RST (RoM Standard time)

Might get some pointers on any Ajax players present, of which I’d expect there to be some.

  82. smartalex says:

    Dick Van Dyke?

  83. smartalex says:

Aah! The nether regions! How low can one man safely go?

  84. smartalex says:

    Ruud von Basten?

  85. WillieRedNut says:

    Clarence Trotter?

  86. smartalex says:

Sorry! I thought Mikekelly12′s retort of ‘Dico Koppers’ was a made-up name. When added to gregory-van-der-wile, I thought he was knobbing around, so to speak.

Who are the players we’re to guess from, I ask listlessly?

  87. LUHG says:

Tough draw we have to take the Europa league seriously, that could be great to win it !!!!!

  88. WillieRedNut says:

    Ruptured Vaart?

  89. MG says:

You see I sill can’t find United in the CL draw

    Confused…

  90. smartalex says:

    Marco van Polo. You’re it!

  91. WillieRedNut says:

  95. Mikekelly12 says:

Hahaha didn’t even notice the penis connection???

  96. JC says:

Was kinda hoping for AZ so I could watch Jozy play but Ajax is going to be a good two games.

  97. WillieRedNut says:

  100. WillieRedNut says:

    Slugger Greenback!

  101. smartalex says:

Snuff Gezuindheit, a blessing in disguise.

  102. Jeet says:

@King Eric: May I also suggest The Doors Cafe? Great place with non-stop Morrison playing (so perfect for me) and very inexpensive. Spent many a happy hour there. You also get to meet some absolutely crazy motherfuckers – met an Israeli guy, who incidentally has to be the most handsome dude I’ve ever seen live, who claimed to have fled the Palestinians after throwing a bomb at them, and now supplies weed to the joint lol…kept saying “Europeans are pussies, including the police…” Totally crazy cat and you will find lots like that out there…

  103. Jeet says:

…ohh nd if you go there, try the Stella Blue…with caution :)

  104. WillieRedNut says:

    Try the brownies! With delight!

  105. smartalex says:

    Koffihuis Marijaana-Winkel, he’s a smoking playmaker.

  106. smartalex says:

Wimpie Grootbroek, played in France under the name Le Big Mac.

  107. smartalex says:

Don’t go to any lesbian shows in Amsterdam. Your natural inclination will be to stick your finger in the hole in the dyke, and you’ll get booted for sure.

  109. Mikekelly12 says:

  111. CedarsDevil says:

Ajax? who the fuck are Ajax?

    Bonsoir every one

  112. James21 says:

White Van Man. Very agressive player.

I’m going to the away game. You can keep your weed tho. Beer Beer and more Beer.

  113. Jeet says:

    @Willie, I just hope she wasn’t spit roasted :)

…And to add to the list of amsterdam advisory – be careful to avoid dealers pushing hard drugs outside the cafes. You can tell them easy – big, leather jackets and they tend to accost you on the streets and strike a conversation. Just look through them, gently sidestep and walk away.
Net-net, it’s a great party place. have fun, but remember it’s a place for grown men who can handle the stuff. Accidents do happen there.

  114. WillieRedNut says:

In Baltimore……they call it Hamsterdam! Druggies looking for their daily fix of Heron and coke! What a sandwich that is!

  115. Jeet says:

…and with that, gnite…tomorrow morning I, hardman defender of my team, vanquish all who dare to step on my turf…sweet dreams and kisses…!!!

  116. Mikekelly12 says:

    James

  117. It's in my blood says:

  118. WillieRedNut says:

Jeet – Nightie night! Don’t let the scousers bite! :)

  119. Zibbie says:

@Wayne glad your OK. I use to travel 1200 miles a week, and almost got killed by a farmer loosing a big round bale of hay hitting my truck at 60 mph. Many surgery’s later I’m doing fine. Could have so easily dies that day.

  151. smartalex says:

    Some great troll-free evening
    You may see a stranger
You may see a stranger, across a crowded rom
    And somehow you know
    You know even then
    That’s somewhere you’ll see him
    Again and again

    Some great troll-free evening
    We all may be laughing
You will hear us laughing across a crowded rom
    And night after night
    As strange as it seems
The sound of our laughter will sing in our dreams

    Who can explain it?
    Who can tell you why?
    Fools give you reasons
    Wise men never try
    Some great troll-free evening
Where we find our true love
    Among a crowded rom

  204. smartalex says:

Evening United – My friends called and well I’m here ;)

  206. King Eric says:

Dave malaysia. Hello mate. No he is due tomorrow but looking like he is gonna go over that date. Hope you are well my friend.

Hey up Jeet. No not been there but you can’t beat the doors. Superb band. Yeah the dealers tend to hang around the canal area. Its a very odd place Dam. Fit as fuck birds in one section. Older ones in another. Blacks in another. Ugly fat bewers in another. Went for the smoke myself BUT there is no getting away from the fact there are some seriously fit pro`s out there. Smoke wise always liked the Gaz “Nevilles Haze“. Top weed. Bubblegum over rated. That Ice is strong shit. Its a resin but compiled from all the crystals off the plant. Eight years ago it was around fifteen euros a gram. Considering some of the top skunk was eight a gram its seriously strong resin. By the way my apologies to any that are anti drugs. Mind you I don’t consider weed a fucking drug. I aint a drinker. Don’t like the taste or effects. They know the score in Dam. It should be legal everywhere. You don’t see people fighting and kicking off after a smoke. I honestly think alcohol is worse. Just my opinion obviously.

  207. wayne says:

@Zibbie thanks mate, getting close to about 10 now for me,rollovers, spin offs, accidents first time it was my fault.I’ve always walked away not a scratch, freaky really i guess i’m destined to live a long and miserable life.lol
@Dave hi mate don’t have a chain 1 store in Calgary,1 in Edmonton, and i supply alot of small rural stores with DVD’s 4 sale and rent, that’s the reason i spend alot of time driving.Darkness and winter rds just increase the risk.

  208. onside says:

Er, I don’t think Ajax are the champions of Holland. They finished runners-up to Steve McLaren’s old team, Twente.

However, they remain one of the top 3 teams in Europe for producing homegrown greats, along with Manchester United, of course, and Barcelona.

Examples include: Cruyff, Van Basten, Bergkamp, Sneijder, Ibrahimovic, Van der vaart, Van der sar!

  209. North Stand Tier 2 says:

If you want to get stoned in Amsterdam on the away trip then you need to sort out a registration, new laws coming in January… Prostitutes are still kosher though.

  210. smartalex says:

    Where’s my kippah! (skull-cap)

  211. smartalex says:

I answered a radio advert for a quadruple peel at an Isreali clinic. Worst mistake ever.
Turns out the advert wasn’t “Four skins painlessly removed”

  212. phildo79 says:

I’m glad we’ve been drawn against a team with a great history. Didn’t really fancy watching us play Locamotive Whatstheirname. Hopefully SAF will take this cup seriously. Ok, it’s not the comp we want to be in but silverwear is still silverwear at the end of the day and that’s what it’s all about, trophies! I’d rather win this and come 5th than come 2nd with fuck all.

  213. Dakduivel says:

You don’t have to worry about those new laws (yet). These laws will first be implemented in the south of Holland (and even that isn’t a closed deal yet). So don’t worry you can still get your weed in Amsterdam come january. Mushrooms are banned though thanks to some fucking tourists who jumped either jumped of a building or fucked up their hotel room while tripping crazy.

As far as Ajax goes this is their strongest line-up:

    —————————–Vermeer—————————–

    –Vd Wiel—-Alderweireld—Vertonghen—-Boilesen–

    ——————————–Enoh———————————

    ——————Eriksen————–Janssen—————–

    –Sulejmani————Sigthursson————Boerigter–

    - Vermeer is a good goalkeeper who’s not the tallest you’ve seen but his catlike reactions on the line are very good and he’s also pretty good at one on ones. Does make the occassional blooper though.

    - Vd Wiel is a really talented RB but most of the time he’s far better when playing for the national side. Sometimes he’s great sometimes he’s awful, he’s like the Nani of Ajax when it comes to consistently performing. Likes to cross the ball and picks up quite a few goals during the season. Will have a game on his hand covering Nani/Young/Valencia though.

    - Aldeweireld is a solid center back with a very powerful shot and a great aerial threat during set pieces. If it wasn’t for Shitty’s Kompany he would be in the starting every game in the Belgian national side.

    - Vertonghen is Ajax’s captain and like Alderweireld capable of producing powerfull long range strikes and a weapon during corners and such. Very stylish leftfooted centerback. He also likes to make runs with or without the ball all the way into the opposition’s half. Plays more like a libero. Though probably he’ll play a bit more defensifly minded against a side like United. One of Ajax’s best without a doubt.

    - Boilesen is a young (19) Danish left back with lots of energy and always willing to make runs forward. Crossing and setting up attacks. Defenisfly he could be better but nevertheless a great player to have for years to come.

    - Enoh is our African powerhouse. Shamefully not the most gifted player but he makes a lot up with his energy and drive. Likes to pick up bookings though, mostly due to silly tackles but if he can leave that out he’ll be able to put up a good fight against United’s midfield. In short; a defensive midfielder who’ll always give it a good go but never breaks a game open with a decisive pass.

    - Janssen: A fairly experienced midfielder with a platinum plus left food. His freekicks and corners are deadly and he also likes to take his shot on. Also a great passer of the ball. He works tirelesly but he isn’t the best when it comes to defensive duties. Has been in the national side now and then but given Van der Vaart/Sneijder/Affellay presence he’s never had a proper go during tournaments or qualification rounds. He’s someone who can dominate any game as was shown last year when he was at Twente and had 2 great games against Internationale Milan.

    - Eriksen: You guys probably heard of this fella. The most talented player in the side but given his age you can imagine he isn’t always performing at the level he could but when he does you really have a player on the field who could hurt United. Great passer of the ball, doesn’t score as much as he would like to but nevertheless picks up the occasional goal. Great player and a even better prospect.

    - Sulejmani: Was picked up at SC Heerenveen some 4 seasons ago but given his 16,5 million euro price tag that came along never really made up to his hype. He’s fairly quick on the wing and has a great connection with Eriksen. Likes to cut inside and take his shot on which often annoys the fans because he does it to much and fairly unsuccessful. He’s able trick and run past players but will have to be at his best to score against a defense like United’s.

    - Sigtursson: Picked up at AZ last summer and had a really good beginning with some great goals. Sadly he sustained an broken ankle after a while and at the moment he’s still recovering. He’s likely to be back in time for the United game and could be able to hurt United’s defense. Got a great shot in him and has good technical ability and most importantly he’s that goal-scoring instinct that every good striker has. Pretty good in the air as well but with Rio or Smalling marking him he’ll has to be at his best.

    - Boerigter: Arrived from RKC Waalwijk (champions in the Jupiler League, the second division of Holland, last season) last summer. Showed to be a far better buy than anyone suspected. A classic leftwinger with a good shot. Likes to run ap at defenders and cross the ball at the backline of the opposition. Will have a game on is hand to against the likes of the Da Silva’s/Smalling or Jones.

With Bulykin on the bench Ajax also got a player who can come on for the final 10 minutes of the game and score a goal. Siem de Jong will be playing when Sigthursson is still not able to play. He’s a midfielder who has discovered his talent as a striker during last season and played a great part in that championship winning side. Other than that there are quite a few talented young players coming through like Serero, Aisatti, Lukoki and Lodeiro. As a backup center back Ajax’s got the experience of Andre Ooijer and if the midfield doesn’t ad up there’s the terrier like approach of Anita (who could also be starting as left back if Frank de Boer feels like he needs a more experienced player covering that position).

An interesting side note is that Ajax like United won a record breaking title last season. For AFC Ajax it was their 30 th (!) title in the highest football division of Holland. That’s nine championships more than runners up PSV Eindhoven.

Cheers, and may the best team win! :D

  214. Captain Park says:

Dave Malaysia, nice to have met you here on these boards and it looks like you’re no stranger to my homeland as wall. I’m quite sure you know it better than I know KL, having worked here before.

I’m no real captain at all. I took the screen name ‘captain park’ because of what Park Ji-Sung did some years back when he come on as a very late substitute and took on the captain’s armband (can’t remember the match though). I was really amused with that particular incident and hence the screen name.

By the looks of it, you’re very much at home here (going by your regular posts) and I reckon you definitely have been here much longer than I, cheers!!
