Evra: Truly Very Proud To Wear Captain’s Armband

Patrice Evra has been chosen as Manchester United captain in the absence of Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand.

Unsurprisingly, he doesn’t take the responsibility lightly.

“I do what I have to on the pitch. I’m not like Ferguson’s son. But as soon as I’m not good, Ferguson will give me the ‘hairdryer’,” said Evra. “That he gave me the captain’s armband is enormous. I am truly very proud to wear it. I didn’t want to let him down.”

Apologise if i am the first to comment on this one.

Surprised that he got the armband,he deserves it.It seems SAF dosent really bother much about captaincy nowadays. He wants leaders all over the pitch and in Evra, fletcher,Rooney and Van Der Sar we have leaders in every department on the field.

Got to love Evra though. Along with Rooney and Fletcher one of our players of the season

  2. Taper Jean Girl says:

    Good on you Evra.

  3. Xusen says:

One of my favourite players….Viva Evra , he is the best…better than the rest.

  4. Costas says:

Future United club captain? It’s either him or Rooney.

  5. Corea says:

One of the other candidates would have been Hargo..

  6. philco says:

Consistantly one of our best players. He loves the club and never lets us down. Recognition where its due!!!

  7. aig alex is god says:

    Costas

why not fletcher?. i love fletch. Rooney may get in the future but consdering the pressure he is under for club and country this season he should not be made the captain of either.

think it will be rooney or fletch. Evra is 29 now. Fletch is 26 and rooney 24.Personally want to see Fletcher made the captain. Just love his attitude and agression.

  8. mikekelly12 says:

He’s a legend already and I agree, one of our most consistant performers over the last couple of seasons. However, is it just me or does anyone agree that during our mini revival we have seen his least effective games for us?

  9. The black Rooney says:

Evra alongside Fletcher,VALENCIA n Rooney hav been the most consistent playas n he deserves that armband bcoz he is a tru leader

  10. aig alex is god says:

    mikekelly12

i agree. when we were poor or losing games he was best of all the players. However against City in the 2nd leg and Arsenal he was okay, not that good but was excellent in the first leg when we lost 2-1 at the wastelands. Apart from the away game at Hull where he had an off day i cant remember him having a bad game this season

  11. Costas says:

    @AIG

I would love Fletch to get the nod. I even thought that he should get the number 7 shirt after Ronaldo left. I think he sees himself more as a trooper than a leader. That could change in 2-3 years, but for now he probably doesn’t want it. There have been games where he and Rooney could have got the armband(against Brum for example), but Evra wore it in the end.

  12. yooney says:

Very few great french players at united after King Eric..(i guess the rest would prefer french speaking dressing room at arse) but evra is up there with the greatest that we had , iam sure

  13. Bealsy says:

would have been Hargo, if he could get past his mental block. He’s been removed from the Champs League squad as well now. Sorry, off topic.

Evra = awesome. The guy is red through and through, you can always rely on him to say the right thing.

  14. aig alex is god says:

    Costas

That was a surprise because i expected it to be Rooney.Fletch has never got the armband, has he? but he is a natural leader with or without the armband. Same for Rooney. These guys dont need the captain’s armband to motivate themselves but are natural leaders and fortunate to have quite a few of them

  15. Vass says:

What did he mean by that “I’m not like Ferguson’s son” bit?

  16. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

there are more people on the pitch for united able to wear the arm band than not the days which not to many other teams in football can say, love paddy

  17. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    @Costa
its not jumping on any band wagon or caught up in the hype but if owen is here for a one season trip(ha ha ha number 19 with there own ryan giggs) and Nani keeps it up then the 7 is his

  18. Red Devil says:

    @ AIG

No need to apologise for being the first mate :) …..I thought that argument was over yesterday!

As for the captaincy decision, I think Sir Alex prefers Evra at the moment simply because he is almost guaranteed to play if fit in his current form. Fletcher for all his great performances isn’t going to play every game because his all action approach means that he is going to exhaust himself more and is more likely to be rotated more often than Evra. And a settled back four isnt likely to be rotated much in any case as compared to the central midfield position where we have a lot of contenders at the moment

Scholes, Carrick, Fletcher, Anderson, Gibson, Giggs, Hargreaves!?

I think it was after our midfield was over-run in the Milan Semi-final at san Siro a few years ago where Sir Alex finally accepted the principle of rotation, especially the midfield. Which is what he was trying to say yesterday when speaking about Murray, that every loss makes him better manager the next day. I think he realised the dangers of over-exerting the midfield by playing the same players every game. Now he tinkers even more than the original Tinkerman Claudio Ranieri with the principle exception that he likes to keep the back five settled!

So Evra wins over Fletcher as the likelier man to play week-in week-out!

  19. 20legend99 says:

Has Pat had a bad match all season?

  20. Evra's biggest fan says:

I just get the impression this guy has taken united to his heart! Fully Committed. love him!

  21. aig alex is god says:

    @Red Devil

Fletcher is 26 mate and has a brilliant engine and great stamina. Is looking more and more like Keano as the days go by.Sure you will agree he is an indispensible member of the team now.Evra is 29 and i agree that his fitness levels are brilliant but i want to have a midfielder as my captain so i would go for Fletch. Also he is likely to be the captain of Scotland too under their new manager.

Anyways i dont care whether its him or evra or rooney. i love all of them and all are natural leaders irrespective of whether they have the armband.

  22. schmadmir says:

20legend99: I think he’s had an odd blip or two, but only for 45 minutes or so, never a whole game.

Back to the topic, I’ve alvays prefered Ferdinand and Rooney for the armband, bu the most important thing is that everyone takes responsibility and that we win. As long as that continues and the team looks motivated and hungry that’s more than enough for me :)

  23. McQueen says:

Gotta love Evra! I think he is a good choice for captain, he is passionate and you sense he is well respected within the squad. I don’t think Rooney is the right choice at the moment, he is a force on the pitch but off the pitch seems quite reserved, almost shy, and is still quite a junior member of the squad. Almost seems to have the kind of ‘kid brother’ relationship with some of the more senior members if you know what i mean? Wouldn’t seem natural for him to be their captain. One for the future though.

  24. 0161-Jon says:

Kenny Evra is off his head and I LOVE him! Well worthy of the armband.

  25. afromanc says:

One of the best players to ever wear a United shirt. If you think about what he’s done for the team this season. Our back four has been under so much pressure and Pat has stood strong through out all of it..
    LEGEND!

  26. Red Devil says:

    AIG

I think you missed my point there :)

I was just trying to explain what I believe is Sir Alex’s thinking behind Evra being given the armband.

Personally even I would love to have a mid-fielder as Captain and the person most likely to play more games than not at the moment is Fletcher (although I dont think he even comes close to Keano — he was different class in that the way he could make not only inspire his own team but also make the opposition shit in their pants, sometimes the opposition was defeated in their minds even before the game had begun, I dont think Fletcher has that aura about him.)

  27. READ CAREFULLY WHAT I says:

I defy anyone to say why Patrice Evra does NOT make a great Captain.

Consistently performing, all the experience of big games, both winning them and losing them and a lead by example style of playing.

Most importantly of all though he is the only player at the entire club who trusts Ji-Sung Park to wark his dog and we all know how tasty poodles are.

Patrice le Capitain – Moi, je n`ai pas de probleme avec ca mon ami.
    Allez les Rouges.

  28. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    red devil
that makes alot of sence when its broke down like that

  29. Costas says:

    @GHTT

I agree that the natural succesor to the number 7 shirt might be Nani. Or Valencia. At the moment, they are both starting to stand up and be counted.

Fletcher would have also been a good choice. But he seems to like 24.

  30. Jig3000 says:

Agree with Red Devil, Fletch isn’t going to play every game so can’t be relied-upon as captain. Also, he’s a bit of whinge-bag when it comes to the refs: throwing up his arms, badgering them continuously. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy but he’s probably not the most diplomatic rep for the team.

One of the gobshites on MOTD, surprisingly, made a good point, that Rooney should be left to play football and not worry about captaincy. It was in relation to Engurland but the same probably applies to Utd. Having said that, I’m sure he would adore the captaincy and would understand the gravity of the honour.

Evra, for me, is a great choice. A fantastic player with an incredible attitude. In an era of preening, spoiled footballers, this guy is not only honorable but comes across as a gentleman. He’s aggressive in the tackle but seems very level-headed and calm. A true role model for any young player and a leader by example.

  31. Red Devil says:

    @ Thank you :)

  32. aig alex is god says:

    Red devil

i am not sayin he is keano mate but since keane left fletch is the closest we have to him.i know you were trying reason why evra must have been made captain ahead of fletch but i disagree on the point that fletch wont play every game.he may be skinny but is a beast and has amazing fitness levels

  33. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    @jig3000
Robbie Keane had a huge blip as Irelands striker when he got the arm band, as you say its adding pressure to one of the most high pressured possitions on the pitch, thou if anyone can handle pressure its our wayne

  34. kinkyp says:

e been some great performers this season notabally Rooney to a lesser extent Fletcher, valencia and Nani of late..but for me week in week out Evra as been truly outstanding.Yet to miss a league game and at times being the only defender on the is all round defending and attacking capabilities get better and better.
The best accolade i can give him is that he would have got in to all our great teams of the last 20 years.
My Player of the season so far…

  35. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

has evra played in every top flight game

  36. aig alex is god says:

    Costas

    nani should get 7.
    Fletch should get 16.sorry carrick.

  37. aig alex is god says:

    Ghtt

hope you dont mind me answering your question and lets forget the silly arguement yesterday.apologise if i said anything wrong.

He has started every league game

  38. kinkyp says:

By the way here is my team of the last 20 years

    Schmiecal

    Irwin Rio Stam Evra

    Ronaldo Keane Scholes Giggs

    Cantona Rooney

  39. Red Devil says:

    AIG

Yeah, he is the closest we have had since Keane, although I think Hargreaves may have taken that honour if he had been sufficiently fit. I dont think Keane is given enough credit for the quality of his passing. Besides all the aggro, he was a very shrewd passer of the ball and weighed in with some crucial goals as well.

Fletcher is very fit and strong and has a fantastic attitude no doubt, which is why I love him! But as for him playing every game, maybe …..But I still think he is going to be rotated more than Evra for two reasons, 1) Midfielders are supposed to get more tired and hence needing of a rest, 2) More competition in the midfielders dept as compared to Evra who realistically only has Fabio for competition.

  40. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    aig
    i emailed you yesterday mate

  41. aig alex is god says:

    ghtt

    where?.i havent got it.

  42. Tony Starks says:

as people are talking about future captains, I think Jonathan Evans must be a candidate, but Evra is a great choice – a captain with a cool head is important, Fletch argues with refs too much and would probable end up getting sent off a few times…

  43. Paul Parker says:

lol, some of you are crazy.

Evra has been our most consistant player for a very long time.
he is the best left back in the world, never mind the country.

we should all be glad to have him, and glad his commitment to UNTIED is so strong and unreserved.

    his attitude…
his ability to contain opposition bombing for our byline…
his marauding runs down opposition flanks…
his accurate delivery into the box…

he’s different class, easily our best player of the season thus far along with Rooney and Valencia. I can’t think of a single bad performance all season, yet he’s played in EVERY league game. He knows when to push on, when to knock a diagonal ball, when to sit deep and defend. He’s not a bit player, and he’s too valuable to be rotated. he’s pure class. Once Fabio gains more experience we can save Evra for PL/CL and let Fabio handle the FA/Carling Cup runs.

    the futures bright.

I remember having a convo/argument with my mate early on in Evra’s career when we still had Heinze. My attitude was FUCK HEINZE if he wants to go let him go, I always felt his attitude on the pitch wasn’t all it could be, and his decision making, final ball, temperament and fitness were too poor for us even tho he clearly had talent. In my opinion EVRA was by far a better player/prospect and deserved a permanant place in the team. My mate thought the opposite and thought Heinze was a better player….

Of course we now all know who the better player is now right ? Lest we forget what Alec said about Heinze and Real Madrid ? Evra is the best left back in the world right now, hands down.

    WHO IS ASHLY COLE ???
    WHO IS CLICHY ???
THERE IS ONLY ONE EVRA !!!!!

  44. King Eric says:

aig – You fucking attention seeker. Always first!! Only joking mate. How are you?

Love Evra. United to the core.

  45. King Eric says:

Red Devil – Fletch WON’T exhaust himself. According to the fitness coaches he is the fittest player at United by some distance. A great engine.

Have not read all the comments . Will do so at dinner time.

  46. aig alex is god says:

    King Eric

    hi mate.

    i am good.

agree with you. i myself have read he is the fittest and i expect him to play atleast 50 games a season if fit.

  47. Paul Parker says:

    Also,
who was Evra before we signed him ? He was as obscure as Vidic was before we signed him. Obviously they both had talent before we came along, but we saw the potential early on and snapped them up to develop them fully with United. Alec and the entire united scouting team (and youth system) are the best in their field hands down. Nobody finds stars like we do.
How many gems have we unearthed over the years ? As long as UNITED continue this tradition above all others after Alec leaves, I’ll be happy. Both Evra and Vidic could walk into any club in europe and we didn’t pay the earth for them. the Da Silva Boys are next, followed by Macheda and Welbeck and all our other young prospects. DIOUF !!! DIOUF !!! DIOUF !!!

  48. welbz19 says:

just popped up on SSN that Hargreaves has been removed from the champions league squad.

  49. Rollins says:

My first choice would be rio, but in his absence I would have loved to see fletcher wear the captain’s band but i have to agree with Red devil on the fact that paddy is more likely to play most matches.

  50. Rollins says:

Just like welbz19, i too read the stuff about hargo being removed from the champions league squad. Dont mean to start some shit but if its true, then aig was right about his comments yesterday.

  51. sahahaha says:

Have to say I thought he started pretty awful when he captained the side against Arsenal, kept losing the ball but he grew into the game, and he has the mental attributes and personality to be a good captain.

  52. welbz19 says:

    Rollins
hahaha was gonna mention that myself but after yesterday thought i would just leave it at that!

  54. Colbert says:

Certainly looks like Hargreaves is finished. Gutted.

  55. kel says:

I don’t think Rooney should be given the armband. We should just let him concentrate on scoring and don’t put more weight on his shoulder. Evra for me is the best candidate now. He is the best and most consistent player and having played most league game in the team.

  56. mikekelly12 says:

    Paul Parker

What’s your point EVERYONE on here thinks he’s the best left back in the world and has been one of our best players. He has had a few shakey moments, he started the second leg of the derby a bit shakey but that is by his high standards and not at all saying he had a poor game. He is pure class!

  57. mikekelly12 says:

    Doesn’t Fletch captain Scotland anymore?

  58. Corea says:

Colbert – just hope Owen himself reads this and becomes even stronger. Not the way to treat your fucking player.
Scott, please, no more Hargreaves related topics, what purpose ?

  59. aig alex is god says:

    @mikekelly12

George Burley the permanent captain but they lost his first game 3-0 against Wales and Burley was sacked as manager. The new manager hasnt made his decision as they havent played under their new manager. IMO he will remain the Scottish captain

  60. Colbert says:

    Corea

Fergie said he would be back in september and now he won’t feature in a tournament that could potentially go on till May for us. I love him and would be thrilled to see him back, but it I no longer have much faith in seeing the old Hargreaves return for us. Which is a shame (i.e. “gutted”).

  61. The Big Red says:

    @ Paul Parker

i was one of many utd fans who thought heinze was much better defensively and i remember tht fergie used to play heinze against better teams like arsenal when more defensive organisation was reqd.heinze offered nothing going fwd, he wud just lump it fwd.
evra has been nothing short of a revelation considering the way he’s cemented his place in the team and in hte hearts of Utd supporters. still remember the CL final where his surging run down the left flank and pass to giggs that almost resulted in a goal had it not been for terry heading it away.
    love evra, love Utd

  62. mikekelly12 says:

    AIG

Cheers mate….I must admit I haven’t followed any Scotland news for a while but couldn’t for the life of me think who was leading the side at the moment, just assumed it was still Fletch.

  63. aig alex is god says:

    @mikekelly12

    welcome mate.

he actually did captain them when they got that famous 1-0 win in France 3 years back.Ferguson was their captain but was sacked after his boozy antics along with Mcgregor. Then Burley said fletch was a natural leader and hence he wanted to make him the permanent captain and had told mcmanus who was captaining the side after ferguson about it who agreed that fletcher would be the best person to lead Scotland

  64. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

fletcher is the captain of scotland after ferguson turned out to be a plank

  65. mikekelly12 says:

Completely off topic here but wondering if anyone can help. Im taking a friend away to watch Real Mallorca v Barcelona in Mallorca. The tickets I’ve seen online are £150 each!!! Does anyone know where I can get any tickets cheaper?

  66. Swissdevil says:

    good choice!! congrats pat!

  67. King Eric says:

Cannot understand why people are saying Fletch won’t play all the time. I think it is evident this season that when he is fit he WILL play every game.

  68. 4 Weeks Till Emily Best Gets To Old Trafford says:

Evra is a fantastic captain with fletcher as vice
Wayne is just gonna play full speed for 90 minutes if he wears an arm band or not so whats the harm in 2 captains on the pitch

  69. Wilton says:

    Always says the right things

  70. Costas says:

As far as Hargreaves goes, I will say it again. Lets leave Owen alone to do things on his own terms. This is not something the club has faced for the first time. Solskjaer was out for almost 2 years and Blomqvist was out for 2 years before we decided not to renew his contract. Hopefully, he will continue his training sessions for the rest of the season and try to make his comeback next season. We can’t force the issue and it was a mistake to start raising fans’ hopes by talking about a September or a November return.

  71. Xyth says:

    You can’t praise Evra enough.
I am very sorry for Hargreaves, I think he is a top player and we do miss him.

  72. 4 Weeks Till Emily Best Gets To Old Trafford says:

I look at The Red Nev and Look At Ole and echo Costas words
we need to just sit back wait it out and enjoy the midfield we have
by the by Anderson is playing against city tonight

  73. Red Devil says:

    King Eric

I am not for one moment implying that Fletcher cant play every game because he is a supremely fit player. Just that he is more likely to be rotated than Patrice Evra given he plays in Central midfield and his performance level is likely to dip if played non-stop.

    http://www.premierleague.com/page/Players/0,,12306,00.html

The stats bear that out as I dont think Fletch has been injured at all this season. the above page gives the stats for appearances this term with figures in brackets being substitute appearnces and the figures outside bracket being total appearances.

And further evidence is the fact that in a few games such as Sunderland, Fletcher has not been at his usual level of efficiency and energy…..I dont think it is humanly possible to play 3 games a week continuously for weeks on end for a central midfielder no matter how fit he is. Look at Essien, even he is given a rest now and then even though arguably he is even more of a beast than Fletcher.

  74. keano86 says:

one of the most important qualities evra has is that most players and teams are too intimidated by him to stand up to him. not as much as keano maybe, but along the same lines. not many pick a war with evra and come out on top. how reassured do you feel knowing he is starting a game, that says it all for me really.

he shoots his fucking mouth off off the pitch too :D

  75. rubito says:

    Mr Evra. Nicely put.
    You have my respect.

  76. Colbert says:

I just read that Evra said that the thinks Fergie will be United manager until he dies. From your mouth to god’s ears, Pat.

  77. united84 says:

He will be a future legend of the club!

Did anyone else see his reaction after shaking hands against Arsenal?
You could see how much winning that game meant to him!

  78. King Eric says:

Red Devil – Fair enough mate. I have to correct you on one thing though. Fletch has been injured. He was out a while with his foot or ankle.

gotta hate – Is Anderson playing tonight. How do you know that mate? What about Diouf?

  79. King Eric says:

As for Essien am I the only one who thinks he is over rated? Good player but not what people think. He has been owned everytime by Fletch or Ando.

  80. rooney the new king says:

Red Devil – fletcher does not get rotated much and he is a regular fixture like evra and rooney.

well it shows there is hope that the foregn player is just as loyal has players like scholes and giggs what a legend he is now. I was still laughing when ronaldo got a phew pencils and had evras face and ronaldos face and had evra look so small

  81. rooney the new king says:

King Eric – I agree he is overated if you mean can he can become a match winner for chelsea like gerrard is but he would still get into the united 11. a patnership of essien and fletcher would match the patnership vierra and pettit done for arsenal

  82. Kings says:

Without jinxing things, if we haven’t lost a game with him wearing it, then let him keep it. Suits him. Twat Merson eulogising about Cashley Cole saying he is without doubt the best left-back in the world. Bollocks, we have the best left-back in the world. Mind you, Merson said that Arsenal would turn us over last weekend – I think he’s been snorting a lot more coke than usual, which explains the countless empty polythene bags on his table in the Soccer Saturday studio!

  83. Gandalf says:

Paul Parker – if I remember correctly, before joining Utd Evra played with Monaco and I watched him in the CL matches, he was really very good… pacy, attacking with intent and more. I’m sure he must have been in the radar for many teams – so we can fairly say he wasn’t obscure.

On this thread – Every team needs an Evra who still shows child-like enthusiasm and can say what he thinks in this world of PR controlled footballers.

Who can forget him praying during 2008 CL penalty shootout… he wears his heart in his sleeves, which every football fan loves about him.

He has always featured, he has always said the right things. If we win a record fourth title, I’ll always remember it as a season that another legend began to cement his name alongside other club greats.
