Fergie: I Wanted To Leave Sleepy Rooney On The Bench

Wayne Rooney became a dad to baby Kai this week and was a surprise inclusion on the bench last night.

Rooney came on with over half an hour to play with the scoreline at 3-1.

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he didn’t want to bring Rooney on last night but was left with little choice.

“Wayne hadn’t had much sleep,” said Ferguson. “I would have preferred to leave him on the bench. He was a safety player that we knew we could have played if we needed him – he was there. I think his energy and confidence was very high. He makes an impact. He is such a good player and is always capable of scoring. He was a wee bit unlucky.”

How good was it that he was on the bench and not totally left out.once he came on we started to create chance after chance and the mood inside the stadium completely changed.Rooney should have got a few though.

    Wayne Rooney for Ballon D’or.

  4. HARGREAVES' CURLY HAIR says:

Yeah definetly agree wazza provided to be the catalyst and will be very important throughout the season. must’ve been dead tired after the birth of Kai. hope to see him score this weekend against chelski and does the baby celebration!:-)

If wayne rooney had 1 leg and 1 arm he wud still be the best player on the pitch.

Sorry if this is old news but Platini has a point:

Where were UEFA when United fans were campigning against the Glazer takeover though.

  9. islandred says:

Here’s something I think the Old Trafford ‘faithful’ should be made aware of:

Definition of ‘FAN’: A fan, aficionado, or supporter is someone who has an intense, occasionally overwhelming liking of a sporting club, person, group of persons or product.
In a few cases, individual fans may become so obsessed with the objects of their infatuation that they become obsessive. These fans engage in behaviors that are considered extreme or abnormal. This includes idolatry or other forms of worship.

I think Rooney was probably ‘sleepy’ due to the lack of atmosphere at the Theatre of Prawn sandwich munching glory hunters – the ‘support’ for the team last night was a fucking disgrace – absolute fucking joke.

I know not all the fans were in the same boat – some sang and got behind the team, but the rest were nothing short of a bunch of voiceless twats.

It’s getting worse. Maybe if we go a few years without winning anything (God forbid), these glory hunting class of ’99 people – let’s not hide behind it, that’s what they are – will fuck off and start SUPPORTING someone else.

They turn up expecting the team to win at a canter – and when the performance isn’t up to the usual standards, the hunters start to pish and moan – and wanking like twats over Ronaldo.

Even when the Russians were winning 3-1, there was nothing from the fans – you know who you are and you should be fucking ashamed of yourselves.

  10. willierednut says:

Spot on islandred thats the modern football fan for ya.

A performance fit for Kai, I say! Wazza!

as a man from Ireland with a family I tryto get over to watch united as much as i can
and if i lived in manchester Id be there to watch everygame i could reserves included and I sing I love it as you can see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLf3Un6qc9U
but just because people dont cheer and sing doesnt make them glory hunters, not too many glory hunter go to watch a match on a wet november tuesday night to wank over ronaldo
You cant pigionhole every fan for not singing. Id say there is loads of “glory hunters” around the world with Ronaldo Jerseys but thats the mark of a sucessfulk team isnt it. Id say Chelsea have a good few glory hunters aswell remember after Jose left and Chelsea were centre stage in the media. You remember on Grand-Slam Sunday at the Bridge when Arsenal scored first ? The crowd were chanting ‘You dont know what you are doing !’. Thats not the chants you want at a home game. What does Grant do ? Bring on Balleti and Anelka…. Two long balls and Chelsea have won ! All is well again ? Grant has 2 cups rather silverware in sight , and Chelsea fans want him sacked ? Semi-Finals of CL and you sack a manager ? Just cos he’s not open in Media ? Not flamboyant or do they want a new manager …. with new buys ? Glory Hunters eh ? At the home game Versus Boro’ I saw a woman sleeping ? These a re chelsea fans ? Hmm…. not true fans

  13. AlphaRS says:

Spot on Islandred. I was there last night and is was fcukin terrible.
I think there is also a problem now that United are finding it hard to attract the fans to the game for a few reasons. The group stages are seen to be a formality and the rising costs of ticket prices. The VAT cut of 2.5% was not passed on to the fans this season and there was a rise of £1 per game.
I sit at Old Trafford and for me having to sit down kills the atmosphere.
I am also sat round people who don’t really care. I have been a season ticket holder at United for 4 years now and it has just been getting worse and worse. I know we can make a noise because we bloody did so against Man City when everyone went crazy when Owen scored. What’s wrong with singing all the while. Fcuking plastic United fans fcuk me off. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

  14. willierednut says:

I dont think he was talking about you ghtt.

  15. cantona7 says:

@islandred you reminded me of something.. i was in a meeting today, had to present something but when i opened my laptop (in sleep mode), there was picture of Wayne and Colleen bringing Kai out of the hospital. so they asked, what’s with the pic? i told them it’s Rooney’s newborn, the whole room shooked their head, all muttering “obsessed” hahaha i said i take that as a compliment

Anyway on Rooney coming on as our safety player yesterday.. well.. talk about changing the game with heart alone. And Rooney’s a braveheart.

  16. King Eric says:

islandRed – Well said pal. Absolutely bang on. Fucking disgraceful last night till the last fifteen minutes then the volume went up. By that time though hundreds had ALREADY left. Fucking jokers.

  17. islandred says:

    Gotta hate tiny tears

I’m not talking about you in any way whatsoever – I appreciate that it’s difficult – I’m from the North of Ireland, so know what it’s like.

And I know how expensive tickets, flights, accomodation etc is and with the current situation it’s even worse, but that doesn’t mean fans shouldn’t get behind the team even when they aren’t performing to an acceptable standard.

Andy Gray and Martin Tyler both commented on the lack of atmosphere, and said they got the feeling that there was an air of complaceny around the place.

It had the feel of an league cup game they said.

You said yourself you would be at every game if you could be – and I don’t doubt you wouldn’t be getting behind the team 110pc no matter who the opposistion is.

I was at the match on Saturday, and was unfortunately sat beside a ‘fan’ who spent 75 mins (he left well before the 90 mins) looking at his watch, complaining about Rooney (or shrek as he called him) being shite, whinging about missing ronaldo etc etc he never once stood to applaud the teams coming out, yawned at the top of his voice constantly – this was all within the first half an hour.

So I’m talking about him and his fellow fans who sit on their hands in the cold waiting on something happening – EXPECTING something to happen. I’ve heard Sir Alex talking about the fans willing the team to victory in the past ( a recent example being Blackburn in ’07).

A lot of these fans today will say United didn’t turn up last night – but neither did a lot of these fans.

It’s just extremely frustrating that these people come out expecting and demanding this and that, and have the gall to whinge about not being 4-0 up after 20 mins.

Roy Keane was spot on when he said what he said.

  18. islandred says:

    cantona7

Fair play to you for that, I’d take it as a compliment too!

  19. HARGREAVES' CURLY HAIR says:

    Yeah King Eric
i heard the commentator said that last night. Glory hunters make me sick especially one’s i know they act as if they know something about the club when they don’t worse part is when we’re losing or not playing well they bring up the ronaldo crap. hope they’d fuck off. they’ve become selfish.
    @islandred
    spot on mate.

  20. Xyth says:

Obertain looks like a class act. The sooner he becomes a regular the better!

  21. Hargreaves - u r the luv of my life says:

Islandred – good point well made mate.

I was at Saturday’s and last night’s matches and the people around me where a joke.
On Saturday a guy a few rows behind slept through most of the match, another one a few seats down didn’t celebrate the first goal becoz Berba scored it and last night when I was trying to get some singing going – the bloke beside me told me to shut up and give over!

If these people don’t want to participate and get behind their team then they should just stay in and watch it on the bloody tv. It’s not the fucking opera where you just sit and watch – it’s a football match where you go to “support” your team.

  22. theboogeyman says:

islandred- I insult all our players when they miss a hard chance just for fun.

I insult Rooney for being Shrek-like,Giggs,Scholes and Neville for being old,Berba for his “languidness”(God,I hate that word.).

It’s all just for laughs though,no one here should get angry.I never grumble because I know it could always be worse.

  23. sam the kenyan red says:

    @islandred
spot on mate…..why the heck do you buy the tickets when you compleately know all you are going to do is complain??
some guys dont actually know how lucky they are,i sometimes imagine myself at OT and i swear i would be singing topless and if it means to remove my trouser then let it be….

  24. sam the kenyan red says:

boogeyman do you mean islandred was talking about you???……god forbid it can’t be….

  25. islandred says:

    theboogeyman

That may well be, and I accept that – I do the same, but not 3 mins into a kick off.

You mentioned Berbatov’s style – this guy made him look like a work horse.

He gave me the feeling he didn’t want to be there, and seemed to be more worried about missing his bus judging by the amount of times he checked his watch.

He looked all around him, everywhere but the pitch for the most part, and as he walked down the steps, decided he’d give the wanker sign to the players as they walked off the pitch.

    Classy

  26. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

I understand what your saying mate
I went to the united city game last season and a guy wanted to know what my tshirt ment ,WHICH SAID LAW ON IT WITH A CROWN OVER IT, i said its for denis law the king and he said “who’s that?? I taught Cantona was the king”
anyway hears a new E ily chant about Cantona that we just did we’ve to go out in the rain now
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_wxZbJONGI
    @Xyth
as i said during the live blog on the 78 minute Nani did a backheel in 60 minutes and Obertan created 8 openings in 6 minutes

  27. islandred says:

    sam the kenyan

What annoyed me most is that this muppet’s ticket could have went to someone who would have enjoyed the experience – maybe someone who’d never been before and who would have actually shown an interest in what was happening on the pitch.

  28. sam the kenyan red says:

    @islandred
mate i bet you should organize a trip from ireland down here to kenya and watch a united game in a video hall or pub you will be amaized with how passionate we are unlike some wankers at OT….. by the way can someone give me a clue about those bearded asian guys who never misses united games at OT??

  29. islandred says:

    sam the kenyan red

    I wouldn’t doubt it mate!

  30. theboogeyman says:

islandred-I do it for fun, just to have a laugh with my brother or my friends, just to be sarcastic to the cunts that actually mean this shit.

Don’t mention his/her name,he/she will take that as provocation.

  34. willierednut says:

I always remember the sik’s wen we destroyed roma 7 1 going crazy as we all were, dont think they ever miss a home game.

  35. dubred says:

    obertan looks promising

  36. Jack says:

He said: “The goalkeeper was fantastic. He’s athletic and powerfully built. His distribution was good. He was excellent. He had a great game.”

Pressed again Ferguson added: “First of all I’m not showing any interest in a goalkeeper. I’m very happy with my goalkeeping situation at the club. We won’t be interested in any other goalkeeper, no matter where it is – but I have to say the goalkeeper was fantastic. He’s a very good goalkeeper.”

thank fuck for that, fosters the future………

obertan looks quality, i would start him v chelsea if fergie aint planning to use 3 in the middle

  37. joe_MUFC says:

What a player its a honour to have him on our team only had a child and he wants to play, shows how much he loves the club..he is the white pele

  38. AlphaRS says:

    @Sam The Kenyan

The Salford Sikhs. Great thing about the fans who watch United at OT.
No matter who you are or where you’re from the only colour anyone is bothered about is the red of United.

  39. theres only one Keano says:

Anyone find the irony of this article sleepy Rooney I thought the whole team was sleepy especially the defence. but my views have not changed oberton should be starting well ahead of nani who obertan has shown in 2 games what nani the ronaldo wannabee has failed to do in 2 years, well nani had 1 great game against arsenal when we won 4 0 thats it. The team for sunday should be.

    vds
    o shea evans vidic evra
    fletcher anderson
    obertan rooney berbatov giggs

does anyone feel obertan seems a bit like zinedine zidane in the way he is built, his height and his style reminds me a lot of zizou, that maybe going overboard but what I have seen he looks simuler to zizou, and he does what nani never does carry the ball at pace and is direct and he has got the football intelligence unlike nani always making the right decisions, evra and obertan seem to have that understanding beckham and neville had in their playing days together, its going overboard but that’s my two sense on that.

  40. trevor says:

With regards to the old trafford crowd i really dont think its like having an 11th man.

What you have is fans going to 1 or 2 games a season, not though choice but because they cant get tickets for any other. 3 seasons ago i tried to go to every home match until the end of November and didnt get accepted for 1 ticket!…….. One membership was canceled & i now only have the intension of watching them on telly or at the pub!

How much i would love Old Trafford to have an atmosphere of Besiktas….I think their home support were like a 11th, 12th, 13th and 15th man!… Awsome!

  41. theboogeyman says:

trevor-Not to doubt your football knowledge or anything, but we already have a 11th man. He’s on the pitch, with the other 10 players.

  42. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

Besiktas fans dont even watch the fuckin match people go to old trafford to watch united not to bounce in circles and turn there back on the game linking arms with whoever is beside them jumping up and down
Besiktas fans are fantastic with the loud singing and john and edward dance moves but they dont watch the game or there team… I learn united chants and i sing united chants i learn united facts and speak united facts i learn united history and respect united history
but i dont want to learn the man united tango

  43. King Eric says:

islandRed – Your story of that twat last night has actually made me feel sick. Giving a wankers sign to the players as he left well early. Fucking cunts. Do us all a favour and don’t bother buying tickets then proper fans may be able to get them. I was astonished that some pricks in the corporates were entertaining Russians last night and actually let them celebrate their goal infront of the North Stand!

As for Obertan I think he looks the business, I really mean that. However I think playing at the bridge on Sunday may be a step too far. Could fuck his confidence for good………………………..but then again!

  44. willierednut says:

    @boogeyman lol

Andrain durham say’s were the luckiest team in the world, hmm has he forgot about the dippers.

  45. King Eric says:

gotta hate and theboogeyman – ha ha nice one lads.

  46. theres only one Keano says:

    King Eric
I would start obertan than play the useless nani who lives in this fantasy land that he will be the next ronaldo. one thing obertan does is he has this ability to make these decisive short passes that go behind the full back Playing full backs like evra in, which helps us on the wings and obertan offers this creative spark I think we have been missing. obertan is better than what we have got at this moment of time on the wings. Valencia needs to add more variety in his game and drive at defences cut inside and shoot more because he has the ability to do that because of his pace andphysique, nani needs to stop living in fantasy land and start playing has a united player, park offers very little when he is fit giggs is class.

but what really pisses me off so much is the sky panel when we were losing at half time they were a joke and a disgrace knowing very little about football, them saying how we miss ronaldo we were awful at the back, Richard keys and selgado were a joke last night how can salgado sit there and say we played better last year than this year we were awful at times last year with ronaldo having so many hissy fits it was beyond a joke, how about they look at ronaldos performances last year and see how average they were at times, oh have people who hate united like to forget that to try and justify their claims that we miss ronaldo which we dont. We may miss the ronaldo between aug 2006 to may 2008 and oh yea ronaldo is injured he is useless to anyone because he is unavailable idiots.

  47. five says:

Sloppy defending but the teams character was there to see, they never gave up…Kiko looked rough around the edges but worked tirelessly.

I love Nani, I always back him up and think hes fantastic but even I have to admit with Obertan,Tosic chomping at the bits, his time is running out.

    Hope he turns it around.

I agree with the poster above who suggested we go for another VDS, an established veteran keeper…theres too much hype around these “next Buffon” or “next cassilas” goalies which tends to fuck them up mentally.

Buffon wouldnt come, someone like Brad Fridel or Jussi Jaskelainen?(not saying them just in the same mould)

  48. Geotaz says:

Was at the game last night, the stretford end was amazing!!! Great game really loved it, amazing comeback, obertan, rooney and evra changed the game.

Keep up the good work with this site i love it, nice banner at the game aswell :)

  49. King Eric says:

theres only one keano – Yeah I agree with most of your points mate. This “United miss Ronaldo” shit is taking the piss. When we win and play well a la Spurs and Citeh second half the papers are all screaming “Ronaldo who” yet when we play relatively poor it is all “United are missing Ronaldo”. Like you say you can count the top games Ronnie had on one hand last season. Spurs at home, Porto, Arsenal champions league semi away and one or two others are the only games that spring to mind. The rest of the time he was moaning, kicking out at players , self substituting and throwing his fucking tracky top about. When will the media get over him? United fans have. As for Obertan like I said it could ruin his confidence if he has a stinker but by the same token it could boost his confidence no end if he plays a blinder. Love the look of him. Great pace, loves running at players but more importantly he looks an intelligent player. Those reverse balls to Pat last night were fucking blinding. He already looks to be forming a partnership with both Pat and Wazza. I just don’t thing Fergie will risk it at the bridge. Perhaps if it were at Old Trafford he maybe would but it will be Giggs that starts on Sunday without a doubt. Albeit he could be in central midfield again like back in January. I have real high hopes for Gabby.

As for that twat Salgado I caught his comments after the game as I sky plused it. He didn’t even know what Keys was talking about. When Keys asked him about the game on Sunday at the bridge he started banging on about the rentboys against Athletico. Get a grip you poncy cunt.

  50. United4eva says:

  51. Always Be Closing says:

This fucking riles me, you cunts moaning that there was no support last night – I sang my lungs out when my throat wasn’t killing me and was urging them on all the way, especially when we were two down, getting behind them like any decent fan. You’re a fucking idiot if you think that the atmosphere was quiet last night, the whole second half was immense, right at the end it was a wall of sound and gave me shivers, not just because it was cold.

So fuck off with your petty bickering about the fans, ta.

  52. Vasuma says:

I can’t understand why people go to the games and not be passionate and cheering our team!? I live in sweden and would give a lot to go and watch every possible game! Fuckin spoilt wankers! Real fans support the team in thick and thin. Yawning at the game?!? You should have put him to sleep… Even though i follow must of the games on the telly, i sing, scream, chear as one would at a game. I even fuckin cried at the cl final in 99. United is in my blood, as i reckon for most of you guys here!! A true red forever!

Keep up the good work scott!

  53. theres only one Keano says:

    King Eric
like I said we may miss the ronaldo of 2 or 3 years ago between aug 2006 to may 2008 not last year, and we got off lucky we got 80 million for him because he was woeful last year ashley young who I think is a cracking player I prefured young last year to ronaldo from last year. has for obertan I have always saidgiggs really makes players like nani look average obertan has shown he is better than what we have out wide because at times we looked short of talent on the wings. nani I have no time for.

  54. King Eric says:

Always be Closing – I would say the last fifteen minutes were the loudest mate. It WAS loud as well for that 15 minutes. Take me home United road continuous.

  55. AlphaRS says:

    @Always Be Closing

You were in the minority if you were doing that at the game.
I will moan and bicker about piss poor support cos I sit around it every game.

  56. IdRatherWalkAlone says:

I was at the blackburn match on halloween, after having to give up my season ticket (worst day of the year), i get to every other home game on average. Now on this particular night i’d bought my seat off a season ticket holding freind of a friend. I was delighted with it, north stand first tier, slightly towards the stretford end than central, but a cracking view of the game end to end. But 10 minutes into the match i was struck by the lack of passion amongst theese fans, season ticket holters nonetheless. most of them didnt even cheer when the announcer read out uniteds starting 11, i felt like a right cunt shouting “Whey!” after every name, because i was the only person within a 20 seat radius doin so. Even when my beloved Stretford End brethren began chantin “Ander son son son” NOBODY around me sang. i thought fuck it. I took a chance. Stood up and sang “…Hes better than Kleberson…” as loud as i could. What a fucking idiot i must have looked. I dont think half of them even knew the words, and NOBODY who could hear me joined in. i remember seeing the stoke away lot at old trafford and bein blown away by their passion and support of their club. I dont think it will ever be the same as it was.
