Fergie: Jones could become United’s best ever

After a brilliant start to his Manchester United’s career, Phil Jones’ development seemed to slow down for a while as he was hampered by injuries and didn’t get a regular run in the team.

However, he has gone from strength to strength this season, starting with a fantastic display at the Bernabeu when he did a great job marking Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manchester City fans, for whatever reason, took to mocking Jones though. “You signed Phil Jones, we signed Kun Aguero” goes their chant. That chant came back to haunt them when in the summer we signed Robin van Persie and they signed the likes of Scott Sinclair and Jack Rodwell.

Last night, Jones won his first title with the club and Sir Alex Ferguson reckons he could go on to be one of our best ever players.

“Jones, arguably the way he is looking, could be our best ever player,” he said. “I think Jones may be one of the best players we have ever had, not matter where we play him. At 21 years of age, he is going to be a phenomenal player. I think he can play anywhere on the pitch. He has such a massive influence, with his instinct and reading of the game. He has a drive about him.”

Ferguson also feels United’s other young players offer great encouragement for the future.

“Rafa is incredible,” he added. “That impetuosity has left him playing with greater maturity now, as the season has progressed. David de Gea has developed fantastically well. I think we have a nucleus of players who are young enough we expect them to improve. It’s not asking too much of players to improve.”

Seriously, I don’t understand this. Maybe Jones is different on the training ground, so SAF saw something different?

Jones is very good. But I don’t see Jones ever becoming our best player ever. I just don’t see that kind of potential in him.

Would be very glad when he proves me wrong.

  2. dazbomber says:

We should make him captain next season and for the next ten years

  3. Paul Cornelius says:

    Mr Incredible Jones.

  4. Red1990 says:

Jones 1, Gerrard 0. The latter will stay that way until he retires.

  5. Marq says:

He certainly shows that he cares, hope he can grow into what Sir Alex expects of him

  6. Jay says:

I don’t see it either, there are players right now in our team who are far more talented than he is. I would say Rafael looks more likely than him to be honest.

This kid will become a all time great!
If you don’t know that. You don’t know football.

  8. Joffrey Baratheon says:

A lot it depends on Fergie playing him as a centre back from now and that only. I fear he’ll turn into Alan Smith we continue to use him as utility man any longer! Evans, Jones and De Gea can form the back bone of United’s future.

  9. Eric Kantono says:

Fergie, please give Fabio a chance as well.

  10. Marq says:

Keane wasn’t exactly ‘talented’, didn’t stop people from recognising him as one of the best

  11. wayne says:

Sir Alex doesn’t throw that kind of praise out lightly, incredible compliment,he was superb last night didn’t put a foot wrong.

  12. King Eric says:

Those that don’t rate Jones are mental. He is a fucking beast and only 21. Already bollocking players around him. Love the kid.

  13. Raizzen says:

    Marq,

Second that. Interesting to see if he can grow into a Keane mould type player for us.

  14. domunited says:

gonna change my RoM handle to “I Saw Phil Jones Play”

    ;)

I am not sure what people “dont” see in jones. We all have opinions, so here is mine.

Name me one other centreback that has the strength, pace, bravey and touch that jones has at 21! Rio matured later in his career, as most defenders do. To play at centreback or Def CM and really be effective takes experience. Positioning, reading the game, instnct for danger etc. I honestly canno think of another player at 21 who plays in these positions that has Jones skill set.

I am going to lay my cards on the table. Jones (baring injury) will go on to reach 100 england caps and be rated as one of the greatest defensive players ever.

    My reasons:

Most defenders are very good in certain areas of the game. Terry / Vidic in the air and bravery, Rio reading he game and going forward etc. Jones can do i all and the scary thing is, he will improve season on season.

Lads we have a real gem on our hands.

  16. Bobby Charlton's combover says:

Fergie sees Jones at United for the rest of his career and amassing a huge number of appearances and he’ll almost certainly be captain. Apart from his footballing abilities his drive and ambition will make him the backbone of the team for years to come.

  17. Ruks says:

Pple dont get it wen SAF speaks about some1. Jones has got an incredible future ahead of him n SAF knows dat n comments lyk dt are only intent on motivation. SAF said Rvp’s goal was of the century, are u gonna take dt out of context 2? Wazza’s derby goal beat dt dt anyday but fergie know just d ryt choice of word 4 d occasion.
