Fergie: Players Have Made United A Special Club

At the Ballon d’Or ceremony last night, Sir Alex Ferguson was presented with the FIFA presidential award for services to football.

Ferguson claimed he was lucky to have managed so many great players who have helped him achieve the success he’s had.

“It is an honour for me in the twilight of my life and very, very much appreciated,” said Ferguson. “I have been a very, very lucky manager to have had so many good players who have shared my vision and passion, and that’s what makes Manchester United such a special club. They retain the courage to play, the courage to try and win. You don’t always win in football – sometimes you lose but we always try to win.”

Anyone think that might be a message to all the mercenaries out there? It’s about the club and commitment, not the money. Not just anybody pulls on the red shirt. Take note Wesley and Sami!!!

  4. gora says:

Great man indeed. Mankini, kk, avb can only dream about such a recognition

  6. smartalex says:

Congratulations and well done Sir Alex!

Tremendous recognition of quite possibly the greatest manager in the World, ever!
    Well done Sir!

Thanks and credit also to all at United for supporting and trusting Sir Alex for 25 years.
Well done Manchester United, and thank you!

SAF knows what Manchester United is all about. A shared vision and passion to play attacking football. The courage to dare all. Whatever else happens I hope this spirit is infused in future generations not as a team ethic but a club one. SAF has clearly done this, that’s his legacy.

I think it gets harder as greed, agents, player egos, commercialism, scandal etc make up the DNA of a club rather than what brings fans and players together on a pitch on a wet saturday afternoon: play your heart out with joy and win with skill to awe the many who applaud talent and team effort.

SAF fully deserved all accolades he gets.

  8. Red Devil says:

He’s also had players like Eric Cantona…Who want to become president of the country!
King Eric for President of France….Viva la France — just like Joan the Maid, France needs a new king to raise the country from its slumber…

  9. oh danny bhoy... says:

Q: What’s the difference between Alex Ferguson and God?
    A: God doesn’t think he’s Alex Ferguson.

i suppose when you give gobbies to the FA, they will give you what you want hey…

Tremendous achievement for Sir Alex, and his words struck an eloquent note. One thing he said really stood out and that was his referenece to his ‘twilight years’, which had a faintly wistful quality, which I’ve never seen in him before, as though it’s really beginning to dawn on him that his time is not unlimited. He never usually refers to getting older, unless he’s having to answer questions about when he might retire, or when he needs to stabilise things by indicating he’s gonna be around for years to come. Intimations of mortality come to us all and I’m hoping his perhaps new-found sense of the transience of all things will be his own unique motivational force. Come on you Reds! Do it one, two , three more times for Sir Alex!

Very moving Giles Oakley, very moving.

    brilliantly put giles….

  13. Saad says:

I’m waiting for Xavi and the lot to retire to see how good a manger Pep Guardiola really is. Aside from Porto, Jose’s always had unnaturally large transfer budgets to work with so again, no real measure of how good he is.

Only SAF has achieved everything the pure way. And that is why he’s the best.

    The discussion ends there.

The sentiment that Fergie expressed there is key to everything that we are, which is why I was actually annoyed at him earlier in the season when he said we should’ve settled at 1-3 against City instead of chasing it. We’re Man Utd, 11 men, 10 men, 9 men we never give up and we always have the courage to play. Thats the defining feature of the club. So we lost 6-1. So what its only 3 points. Better to get knocked out on your feet than lay down and be stomped into the dust.

  15. Costas says:

    “Twilight of my life?”

What the hell is he talking about? He drank from the Holy Grail along with Indiana Jones. ;)

  16. Gandalf says:

Congratulations SAF. twilight of your career? bollocks that – you are immortal or didn’t you know that?

  17. FletchTHEMAN says:

Fantastic for Sir Alex. First Coach to win it. As Seth Blatter said, his career is credit to patience and stable considered football management.

Pep Guardiola also mentioned Sir Alex and Mourinho in his speech, indicating that he views his award as shared. Not really I imagine, but a nice gesture in the main.

Good night for United. Roo and Vida the only non spanish awardees in the World 11.

I wonder what Tommy Smyth thinks about leaving United out of this top 10 teams now. Cittay were 3rd because they are such a massive club.

  18. LUHG says:

UTD and football legend. Thank you sir.

  19. King Eric says:

Giles. Hello my friend. Hope you are keeping well. The good news is Fergie said in an interview the other day, health permitting he wants to stay at least another three years.

Oh dannybhoy. Fuck off you bitter cunt. You would give your right bollock to have him as your manager. Infact which team do you support? Celtic or summat. Neil Lennon? Ha. Quality.

  20. MadMan says:

    At least we used to….

  21. smartalex says:

Q: What’s the difference between Sir Alex Ferguson and God?
A: God doesn’t think he’s Alex Ferguson, whereas Fergie KNOWS he’s Sir Alex Ferguson.

Why would God think he’s Sir Alex? Does he perhaps love Sir Alex?

oh danny bhoy… your sad lament stirs our emotions. Well, one emotion: Pity.

    Sorry for you!

  22. utd_fc says:

Long may he continue taking this club to even greater heights! Congrats Fergiee!

  23. Red Letter says:

I knew an ex professional footballer in Scotland (with Hibs) who was active in the Players Union
in Scotland when SAF was Aberdeen manager. He had to deal with him as regards players contracts
etc. When SAF came to United I ask him what he thought of him and what his chances of success with United were. His opinions were he was very honest and fair as regards Union matters, a fantastic
manager in Scotland, but whether he would have success in England he could not predict as the pressure at United would be different to Aberdeen. Well now we know, he has given us United
supporters success beyond our wildest dreams with great players and thrilling attacking football.
Everyone of us United supporters are eternally grateful to him for what he has given us.
I hate to think of him going.

  24. Diablored says:

Dnt kn if u guys noticed Neymar sitn next to Rooney n behind SAF. Seriously hope they wer selln United 2him, hehehe! He’d b a perfèct new nö.7

  25. King Eric says:

Neymar is a fucking little ponce who is NEVER a United player. Over rated to fuck. Anyway word is Barca have agreed terms.

  26. torontored says:

    There’s only one United!

There’s only one Sir Alex Ferguson!

Just about to raise a glass to the man – words cannot describe him.

Visionary/Organised/Succesion Planning/Belief in youth/Leads by example/Never forgot where he came from.

Wish we would have brought him on board twenty five years earlier than we did.

Hope he stays for another 25 years.

    Truly magnificant.

UNITED 20/12 – 2012 – (and maybe The Europa Cup)
