Fergie: Rooney Could Be On The Bench For Bayern Or Blackburn

Sir Alex Ferguson appears to be in two minds ahead of our clash with Bayern Munich tomorrow, first claiming Wayne Rooney has no chance of playing on Wednesday, before conceding our striker might talk him in to putting him on the bench.

“The lad has no chance,” said Ferguson. “We’ve made good progress and the medical team have done some fantastic work, but I’m not prepared to take a risk on a player that’s not 100 per cent fit. We’re looking more at the Manchester City game, or maybe Blackburn as a sub. The boy always wants to play. Maybe he’ll talk me into [putting him on the bench]. It’s a difficult one.”

Two minds are better than none.

    Remember that.

  2. Costas says:

I think the Blackburn game is more likely.

Fergie was also right about this. I hope the atmosphere is electric tomorrow:

I noticed there’s been some discussion of Hargreaves being absent from today’s training session. Something fishy going on here I think. Fergie claimed that he has been training with the first team but if you type his name into Getty Images’ search facility, the latest pictures of him you’ll find are from his reserve team outing against Burnley. I suppose it could be that Hargreaves doesn’t participate in training sessions which are open to the media but why would that be?

  4. Costas says:

    @Fred

I don’t know how many training sessions we are doing in public, but I think that he didn’t take part in today’s session because it involved only those who are eligible for the Champions’ League. The general idea I have is that he is training with the first team, but not full time. Fergie said that he could be on the subs bench for Chelsea, but I had my doubts about that. I don’t see him playing for us before the Stoke game.

  5. Sayyid says:

I have completely erased Hargreaves from my mind

He wont play this season unless we are definetely out of the Premiership or Champions

If he’s fit enough for the bench (wazza) then he is fit enough to play. I would wait for the Blackburn game

  6. Fze123 says:

I think the Blackburn game is a realistic target for Wayne. What a pity he gets injured at the most crucial stage of the season, but it happens.

  7. Fred says:

@Sayyid – “He wont play this season unless we are definetely out of the Premiership or Champions”

I guess we’ll see him on Sunday then. :-(

    Hi,
I originally said twisted ankle = 10 days out and I stick with that. I reckon he plays against Blackburn or is on the bench at least. I also commented our run in was very tough indeed. After the last week nothing has changed my mind. But I also believed that if any club is capable of overcoming this then MANCHESTER UNITED is that club. I STILL believe that.

COME ON YOU MIGHTY REDS UNITED UNITED UNITED

  9. Fze123 says:

After thinking it over; Hargo should be kept sealed and not be used at all this season. It is too much if a risk; every game from now on will be more physical and competitive. For now he can keep on training with the first team. He will have a full pre-season under his belt presuming he doesn’t get niggles in the summer. Then he will be ready to compete for a place in the first team in September. His involvement in the upcoming games is not ideal, given the fact that he is still not 100% fit.

  10. suhayl says:

bench…if he couldnt walk fair enough…but he’s trained a little bit and could play a little bit…IF he can talk SAF into putting him on the bench…means he can contribute something…

Bollocks to average joes on the bench…who are there just to make up the numbers…who’ll never get on, who fergie wouldnt trust and whom will offer nowt.

A 5% rooney for 5 mins at end of game to win us the game is better than a 100% gibson etc ect..

Him being there would have a psychological effect both on us and bayern..thats a fact..ala doggy on bench for chelski…..cos you know you have a trump card up ur sleeve.

Risk him for 5 mins at end…if we need why not….

Whats the point waiting until the city game…our seasons crucial results and games could be over by then

    Attack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kushy, 1 defender and fill the rest of the bench up with risk taking players…macheda, diouf, oby van kanobe, will keane, ajose..etc etc..

time to ditch the cautious bollocks…4-5-1 etc….time to gamble and play fire with fire

  11. Gudjohnsen says:

I think Rooney will not participate against Bayern. But I have a feeling he’ll be on the bench against Blackburn.

Regarding Hargreaves, I hope to see him in a game with the reserve team this week. So far he’s only played 45 mins with them, he needs more minutes before we can talk about giving him minutes on the pitch with the first team.

  12. TonyBee says:

Fucking hell Suhayl…(WHERE YOU BEEN) you certainly haven’t changed your tune after all these months away have you lol
    ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK….!!!

  13. suhayl says:

TonyBee…how are u mate…yep been along time since ive been on rom…..hence leaving everything and getting everything off my chest the past few days on the last 4-5 threads, you may want to have a quick gander…upset alot of the internet politically correct utd police though…

plenty more dont upset the apple cart on here these days then there used to be…

oh well good to see..some of the old guard are still about..even though many have gone

  14. Giles Oakley says:

Hey good to see you back Suhayl. Missed your attack, attack, attack mentality. Never a better time to see you. Spread the word!

  15. Corea says:

Just feel he will return for the shity game, not earlier. Fergie is matser of the mind games but sometimes he plays them with us.

  16. RedHarry4Life says:

never mind having Rooney on the Bench, I want Miike Dean as ref!

May sound strange but if he was guarnateed Olson would be sent off for diving, Blackburn wouild not get anythingt ands United almost guarnateed a penalaty or 10.

After what Olson. Big Sam and Blackburn said in the papers about Dean giving easy pens etc.

    Plese please MikeDean as Ref

  17. suhayl says:

Hey Giles…how are you? i went through some old threads and comments i have obviously missed in the time i have been away.

Saw that youve not been well……did leave a get well soon message on yesterdays threads…dont know whether you caught em.

But get well soon…you along with some our old guard on here , have my utmost respect.

So my thoughts are with you.

So make sure you look after yourself

  18. King Eric says:

Suhayl – hello mate. Have to disagree. The likes of Obertan, Keane and Ajose are nowhere near options for a game of this magnitude. Gibson may not be everyones cup of tea but he is more realistic than those three aforementioned. Don’t get me wrong fella I am a big fan especially Will Keane.

  19. willierednut says:

I think he’ll be on the bench at Blackburn and start against the Berties.

  20. suhayl says:

you’re right K Eric, they’re not ready and mature and dont have that game experience at all…not by a country mile

But it was me trying to say in a subtle way…that i want us to attack and have all the attacking options possible…just attack…just go for it…..,do or die….the utd way…the utd philosophy.

Instead of the chess manoeveures and very turgid rigid play.

leave on the line i say…gamble, risk take with tactics and formations etc

  21. redscot says:

Have him on the Bench YES as an Insurance policy only, we have enough ammunition elswhere to deal with Blackburn comfortably.
Have him fresh and more eager than ever to skin shitty, lets just hope that big cunt De Jong doesna crunch that ankle because i would put nothing beyond that miserable pile of shit.

  22. King Eric says:

Suhayl – I agree. None of this shit first half performance bollocks. Out of the blocks and attack them with the pace we are used to. Not that pedestrian slow shite we saw on Saturday

  23. Bobkoh says:

I’ll be perfectly satisfied with a 1-0 win to get us into the semis against Lyon/Bordeau.
But, as mentioned above let’s…..ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK!!!
