Having already played the same number of games as last season, Wayne Rooney has already scored more goals, bringing his total for the season to 20. Given he has spent much of the season out on the left, this is an impressive feat, and another four goals will see him have his most successful goal-scoring season ever for the club.
Sir Alex Ferguson has today sung his praises, claiming that despite Giggsy’s PFA award, nobody could disagree that Rooney is also a worthy winner.
“Rooney keeps on showing things that are special because he has that wonderful appetite for the game,” said Ferguson. “He wants to play all the time. It doesn’t matter where you ask him to play. He keeps saying he’s a better centre-half. But he is capable of playing anywhere in the forward positions. His performance level as a wide player has been eye-catching. He’s never said ‘I’m a centre-forward. I want to be in the box scoring goals’. He is now scoring goals in a different way and is doing it for the team. We have got a lot of candidates for the Footballer of the Year award but no one could argue with Wayne getting it.”

Man Utd News 24/7

As long as he scores goals,i am happy with his position.!
Right now, he is doing the team a favour. But starting with the Shity game, he has to go back to playing as a centre forward. That’s where he is best at.
Rooney is good everywhere but the matter is where is his best?
I’d like him to stay up and score goals…
Wing positions is best suited for ppl like Ronaldo or even good ol’ Giggs
But fergie keeps on leaving Rooney in the left wing and leave the goal-getter position to the ever not reliable Tevez / Berbatov…
WHY???
zhixiang,
Fergie knows best how to use the players at his disposal. Sure Rooney’s best position isn’t on the wide left. But he has the quality, and more importantly the pace, to be devastating even from that position.
And Tevez/Berbatov are much better than you’re implying.
Rooney is a United legend already. The way he plays lifts the whole team.
But his recent heroics won’t stop some individuals from slagging him when he won’t play his normal game.
Legend!
Rooney has been excellent in the advanced left position for us in the past few games.. i felt that he absolutely dominated arsenal on that flank, both sagna and walcott were in his pocket for most of that game.. and when he shifted to the right (when giggs and berba were subbed on) he just seemed less influential
what’s even more amazing is that despite all the criticism last season when fergie played him on the left (some of which actually made sense) recently he’s never looked more at home cutting in from the left, giving the opposing right back a nightmare, coming inside to orchestrate play at will, and tracking back at crucial moments. i think his great footballing brain really allows him to play anywhere. however, as an out-and-out striker he was never in the mould of a poacher and his playmaking talents would go to waste.
bottom line is – trust fergie to field ‘em as best required by the opposition.. i also dream from time to time of a RVN-esque player leading our front line, with Rooney as support striker. rooney >>> steven “i almost signed for chelsea” gerrard
Rooney wants to partner Vida at emirates maybe, lol
thats why fergie is THE manager of all time.because he sees past the thing that people always think, rooney doesnt look like a wide player, his always played as a forward or ‘in the hole’ so that should be his position. in my opinion putting rooney there is genius. as he works like messi able to cut in and bring others into play. also his work rate isnt wasted as he can track troublesome wingers down. i feel playing him wide left is best for him.
How funny would it be if Rooney played centre back with Vida against Hull, provided we have won the league by then? Ferdinand can play up front with Tevez!
I we should try him at centre midfielder. Do the same Liverpool did with Gerrard
Just recently he’s really looked settled out on the left,so I’d leave him there for now. He covers a lot of ground defensively, but he still has the energy to be very dangerous going forward. The lad is a special talent.
Fidlurs: “i think his great footballing brain really allows him to play anywhere.”
He’s a team player, not a prima donna. He just wants to play whenever he can, as much as he can because it’s more important for him to be in the game than to be in a specific position. This is a terrific asset for his manager since it means he can mix-and-match the other forwards to make best use of them knowing that TheBoyWonder will contribute from the place he’s assigned.
And, for the record, I don’t think that Wazza is best at center forward because he tends to drift away into midfield – the attack needs a forward man and from what I’ve seen the best available option is Carlitos who contributes more from defending-from-the-front than as an out-and-out striker. Berbatov doesn’t seem interested in being the point-man in attack and when Ronaldo is used there it’s a waste of his talents.
I think that Rooney’s “best position” would be as a box-to-box midfielder, which is pretty much how he has played the last few games from the left side.
denton davey, in my opinion Wayne would definitely play that role some time in the future.
Rooney’s best position?
On the fucking pitch.
Rooney = Legend… its as simple as that.
He has proven he is the most creative assist provider in the team. No wonder that Fergie now thinks of him as center half. He’s the one that splits the defences with his vision.
its painfully obvious to anyone whos seen him play at everton, united or at the euros that his best position is behind the main forward. thats where he initiates, charges forward, assists, and most importantly BANGS THEM IN. the only reason hes being played left is cos we aint got anyone good/fit enuf to fill in left! plus we’ve got a 30m quid yoyo who wanders into the penalty box once every 180 mins of football who does peanuts when THAT SHOULD BE ROONEY IN THAT HOLE. cmon, you might as well argue that hargreaves best position is rightback just cos he filled in and did well couple of games. geez.
LOL @ Firestarter- I think you’re absolutely spot on 100%. Truer words have never been spoken
Honestly i think Rooney is so much more effective out on the left wheere he’s been playing recently. Mainly because the opposite team’s defensive midfielder can’t easily pick him up, he draws centre back to the area of the pitch he’s at since the right back simply can’t cope with him at all, he’s our team’s BEST crosser of the ball bar none; and he’s allowed to make the run in on the left channel and cut in for shots. Maybe he’s Giggsy’s heir apparent…
RooneEey ‘o Legend!!! lets make the gunners F*ucking Shite
Ideal lineup: Rooney, Rio, Vidic, Rooney, Rooney, Scholes, Giggs, Ronaldo, Rooney, Berba
Firestarter: Great line – definitive!
Thank you all. I would like to partner vida against Hull. I know Rio wants to play centr forward one day so we can switch if the coach is willing.
his best position isnt on the left.he’s a prodigious talent…play him anywhere and he’ll rip you to shreds!!!rooney is a typical number 10.his best position is in the hole, right behind the leading striker.
i see nothing wrong on playing Rooney wide left, Henry used to be at the same position and became the top scorer of EPL . Why can’t Rooney do it the same way …
