Manchester United knocked Middlesbrough out of the League Cup this evening with a team showing just the right combination of youth and experience.
Rodrigo Possebon, a young player United fans already rate extremely highly, played in his useful composed and effective manner.
However, the lad is now in hospital following a disgraceful ‘challenge’ from the Middlesbrough captain, Emanuel Pogatetz, who has already broken a player’s leg in his relatively short career.
“The injury looked really bad and the lad has gone to hospital,” said Ferguson. “The thing that gets me about challenges like that is that the opponent always claims he has done nothing wrong. He (Pogatetz) should have just walked off the field. Then you get their bench screaming that is wasn’t a sending-off and there is nothing wrong with our player. At least Gareth Southgate was very good about it. He apologised and understood the gravity. It was an absolutely terrible tackle.”

Just seen the pics of the tackle. Can’t understand how any football fan can condone that. It was awfull and to then try and pass any comments on other players is beyond me. Yes there have been bad tackles in the past and each one should be condemed. I hope the FA throw the book at him and he gets a lengthy ban. There is no room in football for such a high tackle. Any decent fan should feel the same even if one of there own teams players do such things

Pogatetz lunged in to the tackle, but he got the ball and then sadly hit the player – in no way can it be compared to some of the assaults undetaken by UNnited players over the years
How anyone can even begin to argue that this was not worthy of a red card is beyond me.

I haven’t seen the tackle yet, so I can’t comment on whether or not it was intentional. What I CAN comment on is the fact that sittingbison is a huge twat. They DESERVED it?

Saw the game live and could tell instantly the tackle was a shocker. Having seen replays I can only send my sincerest wishes for Rodrigo to get well asap, it was without doubt one of the worst tackles you will ever see, far worse than Martin Taylor’s on Eduardo of Arsenal. Emmanuel Pogatetz has got to seriously look at himself and consider what the fuck he is doing, potentially ending a young lads career for the sake of his “no nonsense reputation”, fuckin knob ed! Here is to hoping Rodrigo can get himself back in business and be the heart beat of the Man United midfield in years to come.

To those who say that he got the ball first and it was just an accident. I’ve now watched the replay several times, and yes. He gets the ball first.
He gets the ball with his left foot while his right foot goes in studs first on Possebons knee. The tackle in itself isn’t that bad, if he’d left it there, but look at the footage and you will see that he brings his right foot up studs first after the initial tackle. And that my friends, that is intent! It’s no worse, no better than the Keane vs Haaland tackle, but when Keano got 5 matches on top of his initial ban just for mentioning the tackle in his book a year or so later, pogatez will escape with a 3 match ban. It’s a disgrace. For tackles like this, the ban should be way higher!
Oops the angle of the footage I saw made it seem like it was his right foot that made contact. Having now seen it from a different angle again, I see that I was wrong. It’s his left foot. Still does not change the fact that he raises his foot after he hits the ball. Still look very intentional to me, and still a disgrace!

Yes it was a bad tackle, but even as Alex Ferguson said, the game is played at such pace now, Poggi was committed to a 50/50 and got it wrong, deserved a red but it was unintentional unlike the aforementioned Keane and Cantona moments.
