Andy Murray won his first Grand Slam last night after beating Novak Djokovic over five sets in New York. After winning the first two sets, he was pegged back to 2-2, only to go on to win the fifth and beat the defending champions.

Sir Alex Ferguson was in the crowd and said he found the match more nerve racking than watching United because he had no control over what happened.

“That was far more nerve racking than a Premier League match,” said Ferguson. “I am usually in control of things but I wasn’t tonight! I am very proud for the boy because he puts in a lot of hard work and showed what a top player he is against Djokovic. When he really needed to produce the goods he did and that is the real test of a champion. It was an absolute privilege to be at the final and see Andy win the title and I love tennis. It was a really special moment.”
