Ferguson Recommends Hull To Campbell

After Manchester United accepted a £6m bid from Hull for Frazier Campbell, the young striker has attracted a lot more attention, particularly after scoring against Spain in the U-21 European Championships.

However, manager Phil Brown has echoed the opinion of chairman Paul Duffen, claiming that Hull is the best destination for Campbell and that it’s a move Sir Alex Ferguson supports.

“Sometimes a young lad’s head can get turned by interest from other clubs and I’m convinced that other clubs will be interested in Fraizer,” said Brown. “But the beauty of the whole deal is that I firmly believe Sir Alex Ferguson has the lad’s best interests at heart with regards to his future. For him to recommend to Fraizer that Hull City is the best move for him speaks volumes for us. Hopefully he’ll take a lot of notice of that advice.”

  1. Macheda is GOD says:

He’s no good for the united squad anyway.

  2. Emmjayy says:

Still not convinced we should be getting rid of him in the first place.

  3. dan_utd says:

I hate Phil Brown with a passion and hope that he gets the sack fairly soon. Send Campbell anywhere else please.

  4. mauly says:

I think he looks good from what I’ve seen of him, I guess tho the fact he’s 21 is the factor, and theirs no way he will be a regular football at United in the near future…. Sell him, develop his football and buy him back with a buy back clause..

  5. venu says:

we don’t exactly do buy backs do we? Rossi would definitely be up there if that were the case!

  6. Costas says:

Lets recommend Kiko and Danny as well. Strikers are lining up to come to Old Trafford anyway right? That’s why we haven’t bought anyone yet.

  7. Gudjohnsen says:

Even though Tevez has left Fergie still wants to get rid of Campbell but he probably has Campbell’s best interests in mind. This must mean that he plans to add a striker to the squad after Tevez’s departure….

  8. AlphaRS says:

    This happens too much.

Promising youngsters leave United because of the lack of first team opportunities.

    Rossi, Pique, and now Campbell!

  9. Scott the Red says:

Venu – we bought back Hughes… but look how he ended up!

  10. FailsworthDevil says:

I know what i would do… and that would be loan Welbeck to Wigan as a sweetener in the Valencia deal, that way Welbeck will get footie week in week out…

Keep Campbell in the United squad for a year, and see what he does…. after all we will still get £6m for him in another season… maybe more… he is English and that creates a premium straight away….. and the more 1st team opportunities u can give Campbell next season at United will only enhance his transfer fee…

If Campbell proves his worth, then we aint lost now… plus we can see how Welbeck is getting on and should bring him on better.

This option is a no loser if you ask me.

  11. james f says:

Young and promising strikers will always leave United as long as we keep buying Benzemas for 40 mil.
    Fergie knows best, anyway.

  12. I Am Not A Man says:

£6m would be good business for us

  13. BlackBabyJesus says:

    what FailsworthDevil said.
No reason to be selling him now when he will be worth more in a year.
Send him out on loan to a club where he will be a regular starter and let’s see how he does. Utd have no need of immediate cash anyway.

  14. Howie says:

MU can’t afford to spend the time to develop average youth talents anymore.

If they do, they’ll become like another Arsenal team, which I reckon we do not want.

Rossi is good, but he just doesn’t suit the English game. Similar case with Diego Forlan, who was top scorer before MU bought him, and was top scorer last season.

Pique wants first team football, and he’s always behind Vidic, Ferdinand and had Evans to compete with. So Barcelona comes along promising first team football and you don’t really say no to that.

Anyway, sell him for good money. Hull City is good as it’ll give him first team football.

  15. Costas says:

Howie you are not wrong about developing average youngsters(although the jury is still out on Fraizer), but i don’t see us buying anyone either. It’s been 2 weeks since Ronaldo was sold and we still haven’t even made an enquiry for anyone.Never mind.It might be my pessimism getting the best of me, but i have a bad feeling about the destination of the 80 million.

  16. King Eric says:

Morning Costas, relax mate the transfer window is not even formally open yet. The £80 million will not have been received. Do you think the Glazers would risk the wrath of the fans by ploughing the funds straight into the debt? I am sure in the next week or two a couple of new signings will be unveiled. I know what you mean though, first thing I do when I get up is check transfer news. To find out nothing happened yet. It will do though mate.

  17. FailsworthDevil says:

I agree with Costa’s and King Eric on both comments… I do get a little worried as to who and if we are gonna get… and do agree with King that the Glazers dare not give SAF that money to spend, otherwise there will be anarchy next season…

  18. Stephen says:

The issue is simply what game time would he get at our club, we already have Rooney, Berbatov, Welbeck an Macheda and have been liked to every striker in Europe and South America. If we bring in another striker how many opportunities will he get?
The simple and sensible option would to cash in, get £6m he would get regular premiership football and everyone is happy.

  19. Manutd forever says:

@costas- agree with you mate. Campbell hasn’t reached his full potential and might be a very good striker in a few years time. I just don’t understand how these guys can say campbell is not united quality. Having seen him play for england u-21′s i’m sure he can be a very good player and if given the opportunity he will be a valuable asset to any club he plays for.

  20. FailsworthDevil says:

Told ya what i would do, and thats loan Welbeck to Wigan or even Burnley for a season, and give Campbell a chance at OT with Macheda… that way he cannot say he hasnt been given a chance…

  21. Vishnu says:

Bit harsh to immediately deem him not good enough, especially given that he’s scoring record quite good:
    Years Club Apps (Gls)
    2006– Manchester United 2 (0)
    2006–2007 → Royal Antwerp 33 (21) [A goal every 1.57 games]
    2007–2008 → Hull City 34 (15) [A goal every 2.26 games]
    2008–2009 → Tottenham 9 (1)
    2008– England U21 12 (4) [A goal every 3 games]

REMEMBER, this doesn’t include Cup goals, which he scored two against Liverpool, and preseason goals on tour with United!

    Compared to Rooney
    Years Club Apps (Gls)
    2002–2004 Everton 067 (15) [A goal every 4.46 games]
    2004– Manchester United 157 (65) [A goal every 2.41 games]
    National team
    2003– England 52 (24) [A goal every 2.16 games ]

This shows that with consistant appearances, Frazier can knock them in at a decent rate, its still questionable whether or not he’d cope in the PL, but he looked quite threatening in the opening game against Newcastle, where he hit the post some 4 times!
I say give him a chance, for all we know, he could’ve scored the goals that Macheda scored if he were at the club at the time, His time at Spurs was without doubt adisaster, as ‘Arry was determined to bring and use only the players that he brought to the club, so i don’t think Frazier should be judged by the limited game time he had there.

He’s got a better scoring record than Manucho, a better record than Forlan had in his early career, and he’ll probably go on to become a great player, maybe not world- class, but why is it we can accept that “imports” like Rooney, Roaldo, Anderson and Nani need time to “settle into the 1st team”, and not afford the same coutousy to home-grown youngsters, who’ll no doubt find the 1st team environment/culture, different to that previously experienced in the reserves/U’18s. The double-standard is completely hypocritical, we shouldn’t be selling strikers, until they turn 25.
Imagine if we had kept Forlan and Rossi on the books, out on a 2/3 season long loan at spanish clubs to get some serious game time, we wouldn’t be in this situation, that’s what Real do, if and when they need their strikers back, the bring them back to the club, otherwise, they sell them, making a healthy profit by selling a player who’s gotten a lot better over their Loan-spell!

  22. Anant says:

i dont want any new signings . there isnt any player good enough too play for united . the ones that are ,are far too overpriced . keep the same squad . give youth a chance . it wont be too bad if we dont win much next year (i wouldnt be to disheartened by just an FA cup). let the rebuilding phase begin . keep hold of the cash . reassess at the end of next season . if major signings are required make them at that time – when the market has regained structure and stability and madrid are bankrupt . if the kids do well regarless we have another of fergie’s fledglings on our hands – not bad , eh?

  23. FailsworthDevil says:

The signing i would like… Arshavin from Arsenal, he would fit our team perfectly…. and could Arsenal turn down 30 million for him?? I dont know.

  24. Axeman says:

The fact of the matter is that we need to start servicing that debt. We dont need to spend 100 million just because we have it from the Ronaldo transfer + the amount earmarked for Tevez. The squad is large enough already with a lot of exciting prospects coming through the ranks. We should be fine with 1 winger (Valencia/ Silva) + 1 striker (Benzema?)

The sooner we wipe off the debt, the better it will be for everyone involved with the club. Maybe even Platini & Blatter will shut their gobs!

  25. FailsworthDevil says:

I disagree in a sense mate, coz if we are managing the debts well now, and we have money to play with then we should use it…

After all when the debt is gone then the glaziers are gonna keep the profits for themselves or sell the club on… so i would rather us continue to purchase players good ones… and still manage the debt properly.

  26. ibrza says:

hi guys… i ev been reading this blog for a while now but this is my first post. i see some issues that need to be addressed with our squad for next season. firstly where have all the tall fwds that can head the ball gone? with ronaldo gone Vidic is the only one that is a good header of the ball in our squad. such a fed can b useful in close games where a goal that could win the game could come from a set piece. i dnt rmb hw many goals we scored from set pieces last season but i bet Ronaldo converted more that 65% of them.. so instead of fergie goin for a pacy/skillful fwd. id say he should go for an old fashioned bully of a fwd with arial prowess.( weather or not there are any available is another discussion)

  27. Corea says:

    @ FailsworthDevil

it’s Fraizer’s final year of the contract. So we have to give him another one.

  28. Stephen says:

I do feel that Welbeck could do with a season on loan, it will toughen him up and give him a regular run ideally in a Premierhip side, I am not sure about him so this would do us as much good so we can truly judge the lad.

  29. Corea says:

    Yeah! Loan him to Tottenham!

  30. Stephen says:

I suppose, did Campbell the er World of good………….

  31. davetian says:

We need 2 wingers, and first choice wingers at that. And a line-leading strike. Campbell barely got a game at Spurs, is he gonna at United? No, put simply. While we can get 6m for essentially a youth team player we should hop on it.

  32. manufan32 says:

all i get upset about the pique sale is that we just got something like 3-4 mill for him… the way he played we should have at least asked for 10….
