First Keano, Now Bruce… Good Luck!

“Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be,” said chairman Niall Quinn. “He knows more than anyone what football means to people of this region and I’m confident that he will be able to instil into our players exactly what it means to play for this football club.”

    Another step up the chain to leading United in a few years time.

  2. costas says:

    I was a bit surprised by this move.I thought that Wigan were the better prospect for Brucey.Next year he could have had a go at a European spot with Wigan.Now,at least for the forthcoming season,he will fight to avoid relegation.

  3. NorwegianDevil says:

    Costas: It’s probably all about money. Sunderland have it, Wigan don’t.

  4. Anant says:

    super…all the good young talent from sunderland gets a one way ticket to old trafford! n we get a decent club to send our players on loan to…doesnt that mean – FEEDER CLUB ?

  5. corea says:

    NorwegianDevil, exactly. Good luck, Brucey. Success with Wigan was noticed, who doubted that ?

  6. Red-Manc says:

    Good luck to him.

    Wigan did well this season thanks to him and he built a great team, only for people to swoop in and buy his key players (heskey/placios/Valencia is on his way) so i think it was right for him to move on from Wigan.

    I predict Sunderland with a few players brought in will finish 10th next season, watch this space ;)

  7. john ferry says:

    @Red-Manc, this is very true. This is the reason he is leaving.

  8. Stephen says:

    Brucey what a loyal manager he is, great for us, but fuck me is that 7 clubs in 10 years.

  9. wazza says:

    @costas : Sund have apparently set aside 50 M for transfers this summer for Brucey. Wigan with their new boss will probably be in relegation battle next season rather than Sund.

    Because my housemate is a Sunderland fan and half the club is ex-United I have a strong affection for them. My housemate tells me that the club has a solid foundation for future success:

    - a successful history (Sunderland have won the league six times as well as a fair few trophies);
    - a great stadium which sells out regularly and has room for expansion;
    - a large local fanbase;
    - good training facilities;
    - a very good youth setup;
    - a competent and intelligent chairman;

    So combine this potential with the big money that Ellis Short has brought to the club and you can see why it would be a tempting offer for a manager.

    I hope that Brucey will at least avoid a relegation scrap with Sunderland, and at best have them in the top half of the table.

    brucey was in a rut at wigan, he was going nowhere. he’d sold palacios and valencia is leaving shortly, wherever remains to be seen, but he won’t stick around. good call to go to sunderland, decent players in all positions, just underperforming. if he can maximise jones ability, richardsons, gordons, ferdinands, hes got a quality packed team.

  12. costas says:

    @wazza:You are right.I forgot the financial situation at Wigan.They will struggle without Bruce.

    @Stephen:It’s Birmingham,Wigan and now Sunderland in the last 10 years.I think he hasn’t gone to any other clubs has he?

  13. Stephen says:

    Not quite.

    1998–1999 Sheffield United
    1999–2000 Huddersfield Town
    2001 Wigan Athletic
    2001 Crystal Palace
    2001–2007 Birmingham City
    2007–2009 Wigan Athletic
    2009- Sunderland

    Costas,

    Chrystal Palace and huddersfield, twice with wigan, B’mingham and Sheffield United and now S’derland think thats about it. But good luck to him anyway.

  15. costas says:

    Sorry Stephen.You were right.Wow,he moved around a lot at the beginning.But it’s good to see that he settled down after that.

  16. Stephen says:

    And good for him Costas, I wish him the best.

  17. costas says:

    Me too.I have immense respect for him.In my opinion, his best piece of work have been the last 2 years at Wigan.And that shows that he is improving with time.

  18. Stephen says:

    Well signing Palacious and Valencia were masters trokes, and probably generate £35m for the club, smart man.

  19. King Eric says:

    Stephen and Costas – Must admit I had forgot he had been at Huddersfield and Palace.

  20. costas says:

    That’s what made his Wigan tenure a big success.He did a fantastic scouting job.The bloke who scored against us at the JJB could also be a hit for them.And lets not forget that under Brucey’s management Heskey played for England again!I think Bruce helped revive his career and he deserves a manager of the year award just for that!

  21. costas says:

    It’s ok King Eric.I thought he retired at Birmingham and immediately became their manager.Didn’t know he experimented as much at the beginning.Roy Keane should take notes of the way Steve Bruce has come along as a manager.

  22. Stephen says:

    Lets not get carried away, don’t forget mate he played for THEM!

  23. costas says:

    I know Stephen.I never rated Heskey too highly. And just when we thought that he was in a rut for good,Bruce managed to make him a credible player.
