Manchester United haven’t featured in the Champions League for the first time in over two decades after David Moyes guided the club to a seventh place finish last season.

Quinton Fortune has claimed that the competition isn’t the same without United in, and criticised Manchester City for wasting their place in Europe. City look to be going out at the group stage this evening for the third time in four years.

This is their fourth straight season in the Champions League and they don’t seem to have learned anything at all. United have not had a great start to the season but in that same group as City they would have done better, for sure. City have enough depth in their squad but they haven’t taken advantage of it. It’s hard to explain. United’s big plus is their experience. Wayne Rooney is a Champions League winner, so is Michael Carrick, so is Angel di Maria. And the manager knows all about winning the Champions League, too. The Champions League just isn’t the same without United. It’s like not having Barcelona or Real Madrid in it.
