From The Stands: Chants vs Arsenal

Old Trafford was extremely lively yesterday, with the competition for loudest fans ending after 20 minutes when United went 2-0 up. At the final whistle, I remarked what a long journey home it was going to be for the Arsenal fans, before looking up and seeing the empty seats, and realising that most of them were on their way back on the M6 already.

Amongst our choice songs for Adebayor and Wenger, we also gave our favourite geordie a rendition of “Cheer up Alan Shearer” as he watched on the with the BBC’s commentary team.

Couldn’t get a ticket? Here’s a view from inside the ground…

Rubbing in our Champions status: “Championees”

2-0 up: “Who the fuck are Man United?”

3-0 up: “Who are ya?”

Following Eboue’s red card: “Cheerio”

Following Adebayor’s shameful dive: “Same old Arsenal, always cheating”

Celebration of the fourth goal

We will show when we come back

  2. ralph says:

what about your disgraceful chants about Wenger being a paedophile? I am all for banter between the teams, but that is a disgrace, and you should be ashamed of yourself…

  3. Fran says:

So deluded i was at the game mate and to be honest many arsenal fans we were chatting to agreed how awful your fans were until it was 3-0. Arsenal fans however we very loud and stayed till final whistle mate i honestly dont know what match ur talking about were u actually there ?????

  4. Kaz says:

Fran, totally agree with you mate. I was there 5 of us gooners were there and once i saw our line up (especially the two full backs) i knew we would struggle. Talking about the fans, us in the arsenal end were terrrfic all game even at 4-0. Someone told me united fans were very loud home and away what a joke. Arsenal fans were by far the loudest and some of the songs united fans actually sung when they eventually did sing made me cringe! so unoriginal.!!!! I was not to bothered on way back home to london as now we can forget those cups and focus on the big ones. Gooners now we have big game on wednesday and every game now is important as its CL and Prem all way. 5 points clear keep winnin and we will be back at old trafford to win title in april.

  5. Scott the Red says:

Yes, I was there, and I didn’t stop singing all game.

Arsenal fans were loud and stayed until the final whistle? Yeh, a few did, but the majority by far had left. The whole top tier of the East Stand was a sea of empty red seats.

Arsenal support started off very well, but unfortunately, went AWOL, just like your players.

  6. GeordieMancunian says:

Cracking game, I lost my voice because I was screaming and shouting and celebrating at the TV when we scored.
I can’t wait to get a ticket next month to see United play.

  7. Terry says:

I am a united fan came up from london as do for all games and to be honest arsenal fans were very good. Our fans were quite subdued till 3-0 nani was immense and destroyed there full backs

  8. fawaz says:

all of the mancs fans are forgetting one thing…our probably two most consistent performers in our team werent there clichy and sagna who could also be arguably the two best wing backs in the league so theyll hoepfully be there at old trafford next time and hopefully our secret weapon will be back. ROBIN VAN PERSIE! all of a sudden everyones forgotten about him but watch everyone awe his performances when hes back. he’ll put all the arsenal players back into their places! come on you gunners! we are top of the league say we are top of the league

  9. Reidish says:

How does your paedophile song go again? Very “brave” of you Salford chaps. Perhaps one of you might care to post a YouTube rendition.

  10. David says:

United season ticket holder nani anderson were amazing and our fans were not bad. Only really started singing once went 2-0 up. Many arsenal fans leaving at 4-0 upper tier but credit given they were singing all game and very loud however lads on park hammered them

  11. Gooner says:

I was at the match yesterday and i have to say that i agree with Fran!!!!
I accept that you outplayed as in the field but on the stands it was a completely different story.
I thought that our fans were quiet, but mate old traford yesterday was like a church!!
Even when you were winning 4-0 you still didn’t sing!!! What you said about some arsenal fans that some of them left a bit earlier than expected is true but at least they had a descent excuse as their team was loosing 4-0 to their main title rivals. What was the excuse for Mn Utd fans leaving the stadium earlier??????
Didn’t they like the quality of football your team produced????

  12. Kaz says:

We had both our full backs out and they are vital for us sagna clichy been awesome. flamini adebayor both rested and they make huge difference too. Gilberto simply cant get around the pitch as flamini does and bendtner and traore are just not ready yet. Hoyte needs to be sold as he will never be arsenal quality.

Onto the United fans they were very subdued i was with a mate and before i could say it he said to me it does not seem like old trafford. Really very quiet. Been there 4 times now and was electric on a few occasions however this time was very subdued. Our fans were brilliant singing non stop and very loud even at 3-0 and 4-0. Was in lower tier and we made a lot of noise.

  13. Tom F says:

It’s not just the United fans who call Arsene a paedo is it? Well to be fair he does really well with the kids doesn’t he? Arsenal are full of young talent and Wenger knows it ;)

    Anyway, Fawaz!

Like your fellow Gooners, there is no place for excuses. BOTH teams had weakend sides yesterday. One team decided to play with passion, the other got taught a lesson. It is clear Arsenal (like United last season) are in a good position at the top of the league table and are suffering injuries. This is exactly what happened to United last season, while still challenging on all 3 fronts. We have not had a proper leader since Neville got injured a YEAR ago but we didn’t make excuses then and don’t now. We were decimated against Milan and got battered, the players who came in to that squad underperformed and unedr prepared according to Sir Alex Ferguson. Again, no excuses.

Arsenal didn’t play against Ronaldo yesterday or Tevez, our 2 top scorers. Did you forget to realise that when we banged 4 goals past Lehmen.

There’s a long way to go and long may Arsenals injuries continue to worsen…

  14. Mark says:

Good to see the Mancs get off their Munich high horses and revert to type with their Wenger song. Is it really a surprise that a team that consistently spends so much on players and can call on several £20m reserves can beat one that doesn’t?

  15. Taehr says:

Neville, hargreaves, ronaldo, tevez, giggs, scholes rested. No complaints lads. Our team is stronger.Enjoy kaka and co.

  16. Kaz says:

Almunia, Sagna, Clichy, Flamini, Rosicky, Diaby, Denilson, Senderos, Adebayor, RVP, Walcott, Song, Djourou all injured. We dont pay 20 million for any player ie nani anderson lol therefore our back ups will take longer to be developed. We are top of the league we are the better side 1st 11 wise son deal with it. We will knock out the side that knocked you out last year watch how it is done. We rested as got bigger fish to fry

  17. Kaz says:

We ll BE BACK TO WIN THE LEAGUE!!!!!

  18. craig mc says:

Hahahahahahaha, those gooners thinking they will thrash AC Milan – well lets wait and see. Your 1st eleven couldn’t beat us at the emirates, a match we nullified your midfield and we deserved to win, thats why your players were delirious with a home drawer at the final whistle. We wouldn’t be going mental about a home drawer. O and get off your high horse about your shouting yesterday, BECAUSE TRAVELLING UNTED FANS ARE MORE THAN YOUR EQUIVELANT. See you in April, and hopefully Chelsea would have stuffed you by then, or shortly thereafter.

  19. ralph says:

when we win the league, I’m sure you will still claim you have the better team…

As for your sick ‘Wenger is a paedophile’ chants… you think it’s an excuse that other teams do it? Were you the same about the monkey chants in the 80′s? ‘everyone does it, so therefore it’s ok’… it’s not ok. Most fans of your rivals have respect for Fergie, we agree that he is a great manager, so why can’t you find it in yourselves to have respect for Wenger? You are pathetic. You are also pretty stupid because I bet your sick chants drive Arsene on even more to win the league and shut you up…

  20. Kaz says:

CRAIG MC – - – - – When you equalised at white hart lane why did you celebrate like you won all 3 points. Clearly the fact is you gained 1 point and it feels like a win obviously. When a last minute equaliser comes against your title rivals then it not only gains ur side a point it also denies your opponents 3 points. Therefore it is even more vital. If you actually have any knowledge about football you will apreciate this fact i rest my case

  21. Kaz says:

All i am going to say to all the man utd fans remember 2002? WILTORDDDDDD!!!!!!! (Martin Tyler). April this year will be ADEBAYOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Martin Tyler). Thank you and goodnight

  22. Tom F says:

Home draw – that’s his point. Arsenal proved that they are happy to settle for a home draw.

The big teams set out at the start of a campaign and would look at all of their home games and hope to count them as 3 pointers, it does go without saying that teams (United last week) drop points where you wouldn’t expect but that doesn’t rule out the fact that a top team should be happy with a home draw, maybe thankful, but certainly not happy.

Ralph. You are just wrong. Your comparison between Football supporters calling Arsene a Paedophile and black players recieving ‘monkey’ chants are both drawn from very different circumstances. Firstly any form of racism, which has been strongly fought against across the world since the 50s is based on fact. The victims of racsim are taunted because of what they are, how they look and where they are from.

Paedophiles are the lowest of all lows and it is the complete insult to call somebody a paedophile. Arsene Wenger may or may not be a paedophile, there’s no way of telling, I’m sure paedophiles come in all shapes, sizes and colours but when you consider the fact that it is very unlikely Wenger is one, the comment becomes nothing more than a playground insult, a way of getting at somebody. Which is happening to all players and managers all over the world.

So there we have it, calling a black person a monkey is a disgusting thing to do, calling a football manager something he is probably not is just tit for tat nonesense, a bit more than light hearted banter but he’s a big lad now he can ignore such taunts.

  23. drew weston says:

regarding the chants. i take it the mancs were not bothered about old heart attack waiting to happen, when he was crying about the abuse he got at the emirates. regarding that game if we had played with two up top we would of buried them, the amount of times we got in behind you. bottom line. in regards to yesterday we would not of one at old trafford twice. bring on april….

  24. Gunner77 says:

The paedohile comments are like you said “playground insults” , however given that they are rom fully grown men really makes them pathetic. We (and all clubs) have the same mindless fans, the shortlieved Diarra song was equally cringeworthy. Just goes to show how many footbal fans are total morons.
As for the game, we done you battered us, o excuses for the payers out as you did too. Our team was just not up for it and some players – Hoytge, Traore, Giberto are just not up to it for one reason or other. Seems to be something affecting our form in the cups.
p.s I don’t know why the press harp on about Rooney so much when it was Anderson who seemed to be the outstanding player on the pitch.

  25. ralph says:

    Tom F

You say Wenger ‘may or may not be a paedophile’… I hope you are proud of your comment… would you be happy if someone called you a paedophile and then when you asked why they said ‘you may or may not be’…it’s a disgrace… to be honest, it’s just another example of united fans being unable to credit anyone other than those wearing a man united shirt… henry, vieira, pires, you didn’t rate any of them… and yet if you speak to most Arsenal fans, they will admit they have the greatest of respect for the likes of cantona and keane… its almost like you have an extreme case of an inferiority complex, as if by accepted that there are those around not linked to united who are world class and deserve to be respected. There are some united fans who clearly think Wenger isn’t a great manager, and thus feel the need to disrepect him. In my view, I’m all for banter, but racist, homophobic or comments like calling someone a paedophile shouldn’t be accepted in a modern football crowd… its surprising that so many seem to be able to condone it.

  26. ralph says:

Just realised I made a typo… I mean’t to say: henry, vieira, pires, you didn’t rate any of them… and yet if you speak to most Arsenal fans, they will admit they have the greatest of respect for the likes of cantona and keane… its almost like you have an extreme case of an inferiority complex, as if by accepting that there are those not linked to united who are world class, it somehow makes you or united seem weaker.

Think about how Wenger must feel getting that abuse every week, think about how you would feel if you were him, it wouldn’t make you feel great… and what has he done to deserve this? He has come to this country and created a football team who play great football and are challenging united at the top. Anyone who sees the guy can tell he is a decent guy, and yet so many feel so jealous/scared of him that they feel the need to spout vicious fiction at him. As I said, I’m all for banter, swear at him, call him anything under the sun, but don’t call him a paedophile… as I said, I think that along with racist and homophobic comments are one step too far…

  27. KingOfZamunda says:

Erm, I agree- it’s a bit crass calling Arsene a paedo, I personally don’t think too much of it, and I’m a United fan.
As for folks like Kaz and all the other gooners out there banging on about there back up players, there first team out injured, us spending money every summer- get a grip, we paid buck load of cash for a couple of players who are clearly worth that and more. You lot are banging on a bout missing Senderos?? Wtf??! Does he even play football?? You’re missing RVP? Erm, that’d hurt any team missing a player of his class but the true tes comes in playing to the best of your abilities without your best players- we did that on saturday and your team didn’t. All of that crap about first 11 v first 11?? Well United were the better team at The Emirates, which is why you lot celebrated your home win like you’d won the title!! And your best player this season played on saturday, not Fabregas, but Hleb- came up with nowt he did. As did Eduardo and the aforementioned fabregas. Adebayor, your other performer, a top class striker, your other big man this seasonn came on to no effect so please wake up to the fact that you got battered beyond compare, with or without your crappy half-backs.
And please, that Senderos comment, the muppet Kaz even dares put in Walcott, Song & Djourou- where the hell did you get that lot as Arsenal first-teamers?????? Where the hell did you get them as being of any quality this season or other???? Poo for brains syndrome I say to Kaz..

  28. Tom F says:

Ralph – you are missing the point.

Firstly, as I pointed out calling Arsene a Paedophile (as tasteless as it is) is a taunt not based on fact. As for my ‘may or may not be’ comment, that is also fair, what do you know about the man? I said it’s fairly safe to say he isn’t but I don’t know the guy personally. Comments based on fact are way over the mark when it comes to chants that are ‘disgusting’. I do not agree with anybody who tells me calling a non-paedophile a paedophile is equally as bad as calling a black player a ‘monkey’ they are totally different. It is not like fans with those chants are going down the local station with an accusation and to fill in a statement.

90% of football chants are ‘playground’ worthy, it’s all a part of the fun of the game. Some comments are obviously below the belt but I think you are getting way too upset for this one.

As for me and many other fellow Reds, take your time to read over some of the other Blogs on this site and you will see that I do rate certain Arsenal players and also Wenger. This, however, is NOT the forum to be discussing how great Viera was, how great it is that a foreign manager has lasted 10 years or there abouts at a top premier division club, this is NOT the time to comment on the hype surrounding Fabregas or how great it would be to have Adebayor at United.

Simply because whatever excuse for a performance you came out with on Saturday, it showed up all of your positives this season for nothing. We didn’t sneak a win yesterday, 2 teams with weakend sides yet you only had 3 shots on goal and not one on target. That is how we kept Arsenals league leaders in our pockets.

  29. Vish says:

I think the Wenger chants from the united fans werent to harsh at all lets remind ourselfs that the gooners like to cheer each pass against the league teams when they run rings round them, where is the respect there i ask?

  30. Salford Red. says:

When i heard the team for saturday i thought on paper you had the strongest team, although there was not a lot in it : both our teams most effective attacking forces were not starting. On paper, as proven on the pitch, our back four was our strongest, you were without your first choice full backs. However i thought that you had potentially the stronger midfield and forward line, being as we started without our first choice left winger and played with a centre mid who has only started a handful of games and reverted to a relatively unfamiliar formation with one up front. The Croatian bloke whose name escapes me has looked quality this season and bendner has also looked a class act.
Quite simply though you were out-fought, with Flecther proving essential to our game plan by incessantly harassing your midfield; out-passed with Carrick and Anderson providing the most notable examples of this fact; and generally out-classed in all departments. You had players missing but so did we. Players arguably more inherently essential to our play than yours. Why just not admit it? We had to last week. As for the crowd, i thought we were quite loud, certainly a lot loader then anything heard at the Emirates. The arsenal fans were quite simply pathetic. The worst away showing for years at OT. What’s worse it that you have the nerve to sprout your tired cliches regarding the OT crowd. Why? At the derby last week we were very quiet, at least we had the burden of tragedy to point to on this matter, but regradless we were quiet. On saturday we were not. As for the Wenger chant, personally i didn’t sing it. And i don’t think it’s right. I will make not attempt to try to make excuses for it. I don’t sing the Park chant because as, Paddy Creland rightly states, he wouldn’t like it. But i also don’t think hissing at Spurs supporters is right either, and in terms of the subject matter a lot worse than the chants aimed at Wegner. Finally the problem with you gooners is that you know that we will destroy your team, like we did to the “invincibles” at OT in 2004. That’s why you hate us.

  31. the little mozart says:

you didnt destroy the invincibles team. you only won that game because of a rooney dive, but hes english so it was ok. he was probably being influenced bey foreigners anyway.

  32. Tom F says:

Out of curiosity regarding all the gooners that come on here, I checked out a few Arsenal Forums. It appears that although most Arsenal fans I know still are making excuses:

“Wenger doesn’t care about the FA Cup”

“We had a weak side out”

    “the pitch was bad”

    …..zzzzzZZZZZ

A highrt percentage of Arsenal fans actually agree that they were totally outclassed in every department. It must be the few that come on here that are always in denial when something goes wrong at their Club. A bit like how whenever there isn’t a great result for them you can always garuntee a red card, a player melee, some shocking fouls and even their own players fighting, that is what makes a team that play great football such a joke. Their players are a spoilt bunch and act like brats who cannot have what they want, very unprofessional.

  33. Vish says:

The biggest mistake the gooners could have made is for Gallas to give an interview before the game saying that United were in danger of blowing there own trumpet and show boating etc… and that will not win them anything and Arsenal will benefit. This comment only inspired Nani to run rings round you gooners at 4-0 down and i think Gallas found that a bit hard to swallow. No doubt Wenger wont be letting any of his players say that stay pre-match as you can see the effect it had.. LOL

And i was at the game aswell – right next to you gooners in fact but you should have seen there faces at 3-0 down at half time..LOL PRICELESS
