Get Better Soon Robbo

A Manchester United club statement has today revealed that former captain and current ambassador, Bryan Robson, has throat cancer.

“Bryan Robson underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his throat on March 3, 2011 in a hospital in Bangkok. The laboratory report revealed a cancerous tumour, which will need further treatment. The oncologist is confident that the condition is treatable.”

Robson is currently in Thailand as coach of the national team.

Gary Pallister, standing in for Robbo in his column, said our former captain is famed for going into challenges head on and he’ll be no different here.

Robson was recently at the Masters Asia tour with David May and others from MUTV. He played for the United Legends team and was also commentating. He appeared fit and healthy and hadn’t let on to anyone about his condition.

Get well soon Captain Marvel.

  25. Giles Oakley says:

Robbo was one of the greatest players United have ever had, possibly under-rated because he was at his peak when United were not a great side. He could lift the team through sheer guts, determination and will-to-win, tremendous qualities in a skipper. I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about him and he’ll always be one of my all-time favourite players. All my very best wishes go to him now, especially as I have cancer myself. Being generally fit and healthy will certainly help him enormously now. Rock on Robbo!

  26. MIDDYRED says:

Fckin ell , i’;m sick of that C… word. Remember Robbo, Sparky and the team in the 80.s training on Heaton Park and joining in with us on the Pitch and Putt. Then years later being breathalysed and having to appear in our local court lol Sincerely hope and pray he beats the bastard

    Bryan Robson, get well soon.

A fearful time, even for a brave man. Our prayers are with you.

Our Captain Marvel carried United to victory time after time. He never let us down.

  67. Red Simmo says:

This guy actually signed for United on the pitch (new perm and all) such was the aura surrounding the pretender to being the best midfield player of his generation and his joining United.

As a then British transfer record of c.£1.5M – Uniteds manager Ron Atkinson famously said “this is not even a gamble, he is pure gold” – how right was he?

You cannot pick another player in United’s squad today who, if was unavailable to play, had such a demoralising effect on the crowd – he simply was that good!

In my view, possibly the only ever player who was deserving of the title “The King” alongside Denis and Eric – perhaps this title remains exclusive to strikers.

One point of note – Bryan did have his head turned by the Italian league when at his prime, he did later admit to almost leaving United but opted to stay and sign an improved contract – Rooney bashers take note – agents and sky TV were not invented then to manipulate players minds and what they say to the public so Bryan was forever worshipped.

“there’s only one Bryan Robson” – Pure Gold

  68. MG says:

It’s a lot to ask sometimes for people to stand by you when you need them most

In this family we stand by everyone

To Giles as always – to Captain Marvel and to everyone else who suffers in whatever way – we won’t forget.

If you ever need us we are here.

The true measure of anyone is knowing that their is a hand behind your shoulder and many hands behind that.

    For United.

  69. Orez says:

I hope he gets well soon.

  72. King Eric says:

As sad as it may be for some for Nate Dog to have passed away do we have to pollute a Robbo thread with it?

  73. FletchTHEMAN says:

    Get well Robbo.
What can you lads do? Neck cancers are dramatically promoted by smoking and second hand smoke. As are virtually every other cancer (Lung, Colon, Breast, Prostate).
All reds should stop supporting that morally bankrupt industry and join anti smoking campaigns. It is only March and there are already over 200,000 smoking associated deaths combining European statistics. The final tally for 2011 will top 1 million. I know it is virtually impossible to quit, but just tell yourself you refuse to support an industry that has killed over 1 billion fathers since the 1950s. Sobering that.

  74. Injury Time says:

I feel sorry for this Cancer guy

  78. bryanrobson's my hereo says:

so sad- just started reading his autobiography on the weekend and seeing those pics of him in his prime brought a ton of warm boyhood memories flooding back. remember when i was a nine year old, i sent him a letter and thought he might like some pictures of himself in action I had torn out from soccer annuals, so I incuded those as well! My boyhood hero- I was utterly in awe of him and even as a young teenage would get all excited when he would appear on its a question of all sport.
luv the guy to bits and rer, ally hoping he pulls through. Come on Robbo- you have millions of adoring fans rooting for you.

  79. smartalex says:

Met him a couple of years ago when his autobiography was out, I was last in line and got to speak with him for ages, he was an absolute gentleman and happy to listen to me babbling on and on on about how much I wanted to be like him was I was a young lad.
