In 2003, Ryan Giggs was linked with a move away from Manchester United to join Inter Milan. It was rumoured that he would leave in a deal that would see Adriano join United.
Giggs has today reflected on his situation as a local lad and United fan getting to play for the club, insisting he never would have left for Inter.
“I don’t look back and think ‘what if’ when it comes to playing for another club or playing abroad,” said Giggs. “I think I’m in the strange position where I am at a big club, I grew up in the area, I was a United fan and have been successful. All those things have made me want to stay. I don’t think there’s ever been a serious possibility of me leaving this club. I went through a sticky patch around 2002/2003 and there were stories linking me to Inter but it was never close. Certainly not from my point of view anyway.”

I dont Think Ryan Giggs has any problem getting sir before his name
the guy is a legend
Ryan giggs isn’t a United player. Ryan Giggs IS Manchester United
I was lucky enough to see him n get a photo with him at the airport after the Porto fame last year, a fucking legend!!!! We will have to retire the #11 shirt wen he goes, sorry sir alex but u can make an exception here
none better than giggsy.
When Giggsy retires a part of me will die. While he is still playing football I will feel forever young. He was kicking a ball when I was in primary school and he’s still playing now. Until then I refuse to grow up. Go on son break Billy Merediths record.
Whats billy merideths record?
He played till he was about 45.
@ NotoriousRedDevil I know wat u mean!!
Going to be sad to lose such icons like giggsy n sir alex in close proximity. Hopefully giggs is being earmarked to continue that legacy as manager one day…
SIR GIGGSY..U are a LEGEND!!! Nuff Said!!
My all time favourite player..never gave up on him even when he was having a bad spell…always knew he would come back strong..
Ryan Giggs represents everything that’s great about football and about United, and I love it when he speaks like this about the club, and how he’s always been happy to stay – a decision that’s been vindicated so many times over. Just one small point about this, however, it wasn’t only around 2002/03 that there was speculation about him going to Italy, it also happened in the mid-90s, when I can clearly remember the alarm I felt when he said more than once that he’d ultimately like to play abroad, preferably in Italy. He said he wanted to be able to test himself againt the best. I think the real turning point may have come in 1999 when we beat the best that Italy had to offer on the way to the Treble.
Ryan went through his football middle age crisis back in 02-03. And he scored 14 goals in that season regadless! At that time, he and Fergie realised that his pace was going down a notch and they found ways to utilise him differently and more effectively. Adaptation has been a big factor in Ryan’s longevity.
Supposedly, speed is the last thing to go for a professional athlete – reaction times go first but are usually balanced by the knowledge gained from experience. Obviously, Ryan Giggs is not as fast as he was twenty years ago, or fifteen years ago but he is still an excellent player who has been able to re-invent himself as he lost that extra-yard of pace that made him like the spaniel chasing the silver paper on a windy day. He’s never been consistent and isn’t particularly consistent nowadays, either. And it’s still not clear what he does with his right foot BUT when he’s good – he can still be fucking brilliant playing in that withdrawn striker role. He might become less dominating and he won’t be running down the wing, giving defenders “twisted blood” but he will still be a useful player on a championship-winning team. And like the GingerNinja and RedNev, he’s also a role model for the younger players who need to learn that bling and flash are only going to go so far in a professional’s life/career. Paolo Maldini just oozed class and professionalism and he was able to play at the very top club-level until he was forty or forty-one and I dont’ see why Ryan Giggs can’t do the same. I sure hope so – Ryan will never be as good as my memories of Georgie Best in his pomp, but Ryan Giggs has been and still is a TRUE LEGEND, which is a description I reserve for a select few.
I mean no disrespect to Giggsy, but was anyone else questioning the decision yesterday to bring him in on as a sub?? I only say this because he hadn’t played in a number of weeks and so it would be a tough game back for anyone. And, on top of this, we had Berba on the bench who I think we can all agree has been playing very well lately and yet SAF left him on the bench. I just thought it was a strange call. Why not bring off Nani, put Park out on the left wing and bring on Berba to hold the ball up and help us keep possession a little?
But, of course we hung on and won, so F me
There are many marvelous aspects of this Man’s football ability and nature as a person.I think he is just a untouchable Star and appears immensely humble and professional on and off the field of play.Similar to other poster’s what he must bring to the training field for the youngster’s to model themselves on, is priceless.
Because of his apparent clean living why can there not be a place for him and for US in the future of our Club.I am confident as long as SAF is at the Helm he will remain hopefully allowing us all to enjoy his dedication and wonderfull skills on the field, failing this he will do a back room Job and maintain/improve our own version of the Liverpuddle bootroom ploy.
Arise Our new Reserve team coach!
he is the legend already. what else we can say
Sir Ryan Giggs > Beckham
You dont leave your boyhood club, especially when it is the biggest club in the world.
LEGEND!!!!
i just read the story at that time in 2003 and this is what that irresponsible peter kenyon has to say: “It’s too soon to say whether we would even consider a bid,” he said. “All we want to do at the moment is concentrate on this season.” statements like this makes clubs come after our players.
I still remember the cunts who booed him when he had a spot of bad form. still to this day, i never understood it and i’m sure a few of them praise him now. Whoever booed him were not true United fans. He was magic from the moment he pulled on a red shirt and has never done anything bad for the club. A true United legend.
@ NotoriousRedDevil
yes mate, spot on. Giggs is MY player…….i grew up with him (not literally), he’s only 3 years older than me and when I was at school it was fucking awesome that a player practically the same age as us could play for United. I’ve watched him from youth team right through to now and it makes me want to cry when I think of him not playing for United.
TO ALL UNITED FANS , FOR GOD’S SAKE ……….. PLEASE STOP CALLING HIM RYAN GIGGS, JUST PUT THE WORD ” SIR ” BEFORE IT…
SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….
can u imagine………. 20 years becoming first class and always part of the 11 players on the pitch. he kept his place very well. sir Alex Ferguson never tends to put him on the bench. if we win this year’s premier league for a record time 19 and for a 4th successive record breaking , no wonder RYAN GIGGS will be SIR………………
I HOPE WE WILL NEVER STOP SEEING HIM FOR YEARS TO COME. HE DESERVES TO BE WHERE HE IS NOW. all the united players especially the young ones should take heart from him. and should have the eyes to become his successors.
SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….SIR RYAN GIGGS……………….
