Cristiano Ronaldo has taken pretty much every freekick Manchester United have been awarded over the past few years. Whilst plenty would be rifled straight in to the wall, there were some truly sublime goals scored from great distances and seemingly impossible angles.
Ryan Giggs scored a great freekick against Tottenham Hotspur to take it to 1-1 after Jermaine Defoe scored with less than a minute played. After the match, Giggsy admitted he was a bit rusty where freekicks were concerned but that there were other players as well as him eager to take on the freekick duty.
“I’ve been a bit rusty at free kicks,” said Giggs. “We’ve got plenty of players who can take them. “Nani’s already scored one this season, Wayne and myself both can. We’ve got plenty of options, but we didn’t have a look-in for four or five years, obviously with Cristiano! I was just glad to see it go in.”
Fortunately, we had a goal advantage when we went down to ten men, although Wayne Rooney went on to make it 3-1 regardless.
“With 10 men obviously it’s always tough,” he added. “They had a lot of the ball and we had to defend really well, they’ve got a lot of attacking options so we had to try to get men behind the ball and try to get a breakaway goal – and that’s what we got. It was a great goal. When you’re down to 10 men you’re just hanging on really and hoping you get something, a bit of magic, and Wayne’s produced that.”

Hargo is a definite contenders especially infront of the D…and I read sumwer Fabio is also a good freekick taker….For Gibbo n Scholesy somebody need to lay it off for them as they prefer a volley or moving ball rather than dead ball…Wow!! brilliant isn’t it??? When you come to think that the opposing team don’t even have a clue on who will be taking it!! And the possibility of scoring is high!

It was the same when Becks left, and the very first game we had a freekick, and Giggsy scored a stunner versus Bolton. I just hope Giggsy gets to take more, he is a great free kick taker.
Speaking of Ronaldo, it appears his move away has been good for all parties, as he has scored 2 in 2games, he came off the bench to get the 3rd yesterday, and he scored a penalty on his debut.
what i thought was important yesterday was that we had 2 players stood over it and nobody knew who was gona take it. If you watch cudicini, he completely buys rooney’s dummy before giggs beats him. Last year we all knew ronaldo was gona take them all and what he was gona try to do. If hargo comes back the same player then he’s up there, especially from wide areas and very close to the box. Really missed hargo, with him in the team last season, we’d have won it 4 times without killin anyone

I got really fed up with him monopolising free kicks last season – I think 5 of his goals were free kicks (4 penalties) yet surely most games he’d have had at least one attempt.
