Ryan Giggs is one of ten players who has been nominated for the Golden Foot award which is given to players over the age of 29.
Sports journalists from all over the world have shortlisted the ten players and the winner will leave his footprint on Monaco’s Champions Promenade ‘Walk of Fame’.
The other nominees are Gianluigi Buffon, Iker Casillas, Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Carles Puyol, Raul, Xavi and Javier Zanetti.
Previous winners are Francesco Totti (2010), Ronaldinho (2009), Roberto Carlos (2008), Alessandro Del Piero (2007), Ronaldo (2006), Andriy Shevchenko (2005), Pavel Nedvěd (2004) and Roberto Baggio (2003).

Giggs should win this but in Xavi, & casillas are serious contenders, with Giggsy being 37 years young, 38 appearances and 4 goals he deserves it clearly by playing week in week out in the hardest league at the highest level since he became a veteran and has adapted his game for centre midfield and can still play left wing and destroy and skim defenders like ivanovic, micah richards, bardsley with ease.
Xavi is amazing and deserves recogniton but at 31 its not that impressive when guys like Zidane, Nedved, del piero, totti played much better at that age but struggled when they hit 33/34 and zidane retired at his best, while giggs has continued to be immense and influential at 37 turning 38 in 4 months.
David Beckham is a nominee too but I voted for Giggsy anyway

I would probably give it to Giggs but only because he is the oldest of them all. Xavi is still at the right age to be influencing games. In fact, at his age, if a player of his quality does not run the game like he does, then there is something wrong.
But Giggs has not right in being one of the lynchpins of one of the world’s best footballing sides. The kind of influence Giggs has at his age for this United team is really freakish and he still has at least one year left on him to be able to do that.
It will most probably go to Xavi because he is more important to his team than anybody else on the list. But if age is given consideration, then Giggs deserves it more than anybody else.

Looks like those Glaciers are guarenteed to more than double their profits on the club when they sell Manchester United. In 2005, I was pretty sure that the Glaciers was going to buy the club for £700m (?) pay off the loan by around 2020 and then fuck off by trebeling United’s Value and making a tidy profit on us while the Club itself generated its own revenue to pay off their debts. I never expected them to use their own cash to pay off the debt because when they bought us they was basically owners of Shopping Malls that was on the edge of collapse and a crap sports team in the US of A.
So far they’ve pretty much done that but used publicity about PIK loans, a plan, David Gill, Marketing and Commercial Revenue to cover their own tracks that nothing is coming out of their own pockets yet they can have the authority to sanction the club using its own money because they purchased the club with money they never had in the first place.
Its business yes, but what happened to buying what you can afford and not burdening others with heavy debt. Those greedy fucking, egg farting Public limited shareholders really couldn’t give a shit about United and handed club over to the highest bidder.

The news i got told was a bid went in months ago so Fergie is playing a game. Not sure why he has denied it, it can only be because there is a hitch. United will always come first and all associated with the club will always get my 100% backing. But let us be clear on something here, Fergie has categorically stated that he is on the look out for midfield reinforcements and reading between the lines that reinforcement is focused on replacing the irreplaceable that is Paul Scholes – 3 names have been mentioned, Modric, Nasri and Sneijder, two of which I have no time for. Now let’s go through the process of elimination here. Modric has in no uncertain terms declared his interest in joining Chelsea and has since handed in a written transfer request and despite Beetroot cunt Redknapps shameless begging, he has already made up his mind that he wants to go there, so he is fighting a losing battle there. Mancini distasteful acts of tapping up regarding Nasri tells you that something is in the pipeline and a deal will be probably completed within the next couple of weeks. So after that, we are left with the option of persuing Sneijder. Regardless of what some people say about this player, he is fucking world class and he has delivered in the biggest of games. I have expressed many times of how I appreciate this guys talents and I always felt we should have got him in as part of the Ronaldo deal, keeping in mind what Inter paid for him (£15m). When someone of his quality is a possible acquisition, you have to a total fool to turn your nose up at him.
I know people on here are being dismissive of this signing happening, but I feel that Fergie is playing a clever game here and putting the onus on Inter to play ball. He says “forget about it”, then right away says getting him “won’t be so easy”. My reading of that is the same as yours — the fat lady may be warming her tonsils but she hasn’t sung yet. If it happens, that will be great. If it doesn’t, we’ll still be fine. What Sir Alex did do, though, was make it clear he won’t be chasing anyone just to build up the numbers. He’ll spend money for class, or he won’t spend anything at all (except maybe a youngster here or there). And that’s the right call, imo.

I also said that this close season was all about tweaking and not a revolution as we have a great squad of players. We needed a keeper to replace the departed VDS and a central midfielder and that is the complete jigsaw for me. Fergie certainly pulled a rabbit out of the hat with the Jones signing, but a great signing none the less. I’m pleased with all the signings we have made, but I would definitely welcome that class central midfielder. As I said many times, that is not a slant on the players we have, but if someone of the quality of Sneijder is possibly available then you have to mad to overlook him. He will add quality to an already great squad and you can never have too much quality. If he signs, fantastic, if not then so be it. Nevertheless, I’m really excited about the future as these signings coupled with the retirement of the greats means the average age of our squad is significantly reduced, giving us at least 10 years of domination. The future is bright for United my friend.

I’ll confess that i wasn’t keen on Ashley Young coming over to us, but I am prepared to give anyone a fair chance. If someone puts on our shirt, then the least we can do is give him a fair go. And although he’s only played one preseason warm up so far, I’m already of the opinion that Young will soon prove me wrong! There’ll be no complaints from me! Of course, what we forget sometimes (when judging players from other teams) is that they are often limited by those around them — and therefore shine bright when they take a step up into our squad.

Stateside. Hello mate. Good post about Young and Jones. I wasn’t a fan of Young but I am changing my tune. Reckon he will be a top signing. Seems a great lad too. Understands United and was desperate to sign for us. That’s good enough for me. As for Jones really excited about this kid. I have said countless times its no coincidence he has been given the four number shirt. I know we rotate but that’s not a squad number but a first eleven shirt. As I have also stated before I think he will become our midfield ball winner over time. Great in the tackle, very quick, tough as old boots, reads the game superbly and a good passer of the ball. Cannot wait to see him play.

I think its a combination of making sure he stays on his toes, and also a challenge. Chicharito’s hold up play and general presence on the ball wasn’t that good, and I’m sure Fergie wants him to improve that. Coz in today’s game, being “just a goalscorer” won’t make you a regular first teamer at a big club. You’ll be in the squad coz goalscorers like him are invaluable..but to really establish yourself you need more of an all round game.
If the story about us being in for Sanchez were true, and I think they were….then I think Fergie would’ve been looking for him to replace Chicha. Sanchez in the hole, and Rooney- who has a great all round game AND scores goals- further forward in the Chicha role. In fact, if we get Sneijder, don’t be surprised if we see that as well….4-2-3-1 with Sneijder off Rooney.

@King Eric, I said this when Jones was signed itself that he will play a lot of games in the Roy Keane role. A lot of reasons for that: For one, we have not been linked with any destroyer in mid-field even though Fletcher can be asssumed to be out for a few weeks at the start of the season at least. So, even without cover for Fletch, no destroyers being linked with. With Tunni going out on loan, the main remaining option apart from our regualrs is Phil Jones. I would be very surprised if Jones doesn’t play MF at some point.
I also agree about Barton. He is someone like Paul Gascoigne. Obviously not in terms of being a genius, but in terms of throwing a perfectly decent career down the drain. Had he kept his head up, he could’ve maybe joined an Arsenal who really needed a player like him and really hit off on something big, but his attitude made sure that never happened. People talking as if he is a shit player really are prejudiced. You don’t want him at OT, that’s fine, I don’t either, but he is a perfectly capable player and will do well in that kind of a destryoer role.
Regarding the Sneijder saga, nothing more to say than that I agree with Kings, Stateside and The Fly. There are a lot of complications in any foreign transfer in general with getting a work permit, medical, the player’s family being OK with a move, finding a house and all that jazz. When the player is as high-profile as Sneijder, then they are only compounded.
But one thing I can guarantee, I simply cannot see Sneijder going to City. I would bet my house on it that he is not going to them. If Sneijder leaves on a plane from Milan, it will be to United and no one else.
Interesting comments by Sir Alex on Chicharito and I think I agree with them. They both have worked together well but it’s not like they are telepathic or anything. Their combination works well for the team in general but nothing has really shown that they work well off each other by inter-linking passes and so on. Cedars – Yeah I think any player coming through the youth system you always will have a soft spot for. I’ve been wrong so many times though!! Throughout the years I thought Notman, Rossi, Pique, Bardsley, Eikrem etc were all going to make the grade with the first team.
Gibbo is another example, but I agree a loan spell will do him good….if he’s serious about playing for us long term he’ll have to fight for his place just like Fletcher did – another player who proved me wrong!
Rai – Thing is, the class of 92 set such high standards that it seems almost impossible to copy. We keep trying and hoping and I am sure every now and then we will see a new Ginger Prince come through the ranks…. Best youth set up in the league will guarantee you that.
