Gary Neville, who has spent the summer with the England squad during their Euro 2012 campaign, has reflected on his first pre-season with the club when he was 20-years-old.
“My first trip to Asia with United was in 1995,” he told the official site. “We went to Malaysia for two weeks and I had a brilliant time. We played in front of big crowds and saw a lot of interesting sights. It was the first tour for quite a lot of us young lads from the class of ’92 and it was brilliant to spend time with the first-team players and coaching staff. I also remember the heat and humidity. I couldn’t understand how it was possible to play football in those conditions. I remember coming back to play in England and thinking, ‘This is easy’. But that’s part of pre-season: if you can run in that heat then it’s going to bring on your fitness an awful lot.”

GNEV – Pre-season’s critical. From an individual player perspective, you never feel quite right if you’re not fit in pre-season. I missed pre-season tours once or twice or picked up little injuries in July and it really affected me. It can take you two or three months to get into the groove. You always feel like those lads who have gone on tour and done that intensive fitness training have a head start. The month before the season – the time spent at Carrington and the time spent on tour – is of huge benefit to a player. It can help the team, too, to get wins under the belt and build a bit of momentum.

I also tink he deserves a break. I’m in no way disputing that. However, I think he needs to work very hard to be in the team this coming season. His early performances last season were very good, but I was not too impressed with his performances as the season went on if I am to be honest with you guys. Of our 3 summer signings, Young, De Gea and Jones, I would say that Jones had the worst season though his season wasn’t that bad. With no serious injuries, Jones wouldn’t be in the team so he needs to work harder to impress Sir Alex and perhaps he could cement the right back spot a his own in the short term and then maybe displace Evans as the partner to Vida in the coming season. My fair take.

Absolutely. Even if he didn’t play one single minute, Jones has to take time off just like the rest of the England players. Like you said, Jones spent the days of his original vacation training with England. He wasn’t resting and recharging his batteries. So that’s what he’s doing now. If he joined the United squad as soon as his Euro obligations were over, then there’s a very good chance he would have been burnt out by December.
If rafael stays fit and improves then he’ll cement the right back spot, he’s better than jones in that position because he’s an expert and adds quality.
Again, jones is being touted for a position that will never show his full potential. He’s a centre back but even at centre half, he still needs massive improvements. Getting moved randomly across the pitch in order to do a job will hamper him in the long term.

Looking at the schedule, the final of the tournament is on August 11th and we face Everton 9 days later. So barring injuries, hopefully all of them will be back in time for Goodison Park. Especially if their countries get knocked out before the final.
Jones had a mixed season. Impressive at the start but then his flaws started to come to the fore as the season moved onwards, pointing to the fact he’s no where near a finished article and isn’t proven yet. He needs to settle at centre back but then improve. He needs to learn from the experienced defenders and add it to his game. He in my opinion was rushed into a first team starting place due to injuries Last season.

Looks like cole and lingard may be sent out on loan. Immense talents both of them are, i hope that they join a side that actually plays good football. Ah, I see. Sounds a bit like our desire to use buy Nasri and use him in a similar role last year. Like you said, it could work out in some games, but it doesn’t solve the problem. Our other options would still be the golden oldies, Carrick at 31 now and TC23.
I fully agree on Park. I’ll be sad to see him go, but the last season was evidence that maybe his time at United was running out. Maybe we could still get a few more good performances out of him in 12-13, but in United’s current environment, 5 mil sounds too good to pass up.

Kagawa in a 4-4-2 will mean united have not learnt again. He’s an attacking playmaker, in a flexible and interchangeable formation (4-2-3-1 or whatever). Best to play footballers in positions that bring the best out of them. I’d imagine kagawa signed the new deal with an assurance that he won’t be farmed out to the wing or in a two man midfield that will expose his defensive flaws.

Good shout. It’s like the Ando/Cleverley partnership. Both essentially attacking players, but formed a fantastic MF two at the start of the season, either at OT or away at weaker teams.
I think against teams where the pattern of attack -vs- defence is pre-ordained, Kagawa could find himself alongside Anderson (if fit and still a Utd player) or Carrick in a MF two.

Kagawa has never played in a two man midfield yet he’s been put up to play in it. He’s never going to be a midfielder that controls the tempo of a game, he’s a creative playmaker that floats between the defensive lines. He picks up the ball, links up play in the final third. He produces assists or scores. He’ll never be a carrick or a scholes who now plays deeper. United can’t afford to stifle kagawa’s creativity because they want to fit him in a pre-historic 4-4-2.

Kagawa has never played in a two man midfield and i may not be totally accurate with this but he also claimed he’s better as a number 10, as the playmaker. He excelled with dortmund in that position and yet you want him to play in a two man midfield that requires an all round central midfield skill. Kagawa has many qualities but he doesn’t control the tempo of a game, deep lying midfielders do (xavi, pirlo, carrick, a veteran scholes e.t.c).
All i’m saying is, united should play to his strength, united shouldn’t be scared of coming out with a different idea that has no similarity with the flat, predictable 4-4-2…..

The departure of park wouldn’t be felt as much as nani leaving. Park’s game has always been based on his energy, i think a deterioration in his game was visible last season, this season would have been a hill too high to climb. Nani however is near his peak, gotta keep him.

Good to be excited about Kagawa, but I cannot see him fixing United and turning a poor season into a good one. Our most important players are a year older and one of them comming off a really bad injury. Scholes and Giggs close to 40, Rio well into 30′s and Carrick and Vidic into 30′s. Fletcher will most likely never play again our only true box-to-box midfielder.
Don’t mean to be a party pooper, but unless SAF buys at least another true midfielder, we will have to lean on luck next year. If Carrick and/or Scholes goes out with a bad injury, we are in trouble.
Kagawa will help in attack, but remember we have Young, Nani and Valencia already in our club feeding Rooney and the strikers.
