God No, Not Michael Owen

1. “In a perfect world I would stay my entire career. I am dreaming about that.” (2 months later)
2. He’s injury-prone (something he has been denying since he was at Liverpool and something Giggsy warned him about years ago)
3. He’ll play for anyone for the money (Newcastle?? Really, Michael?)
4. “The brochure
5. “I believe my ambitions can be fulfilled at Liverpool. I find it a little insulting that, after 12 years’ service, my loyalty is being questioned. I want every supporter to know that I am as committed to Liverpool as any player at the club. I have been the same ever since I first came to Anfield as an 11-year-old.”
6. He ended Ronny Johnsen’s season after sticking his studs in to our defender’s ankle, and was sent off, after already lunging at Peter Schmeichel in a 1-1 draw in the 97/98 season.
7. He’s a whinger
8. He’s a target for Hull.
9. “In an ideal world, and in the long term, I want to help Liverpool become the most successful club in the world again.”
10. This is how happy scoring against us makes him.

Don’t forget the RoM free shirt summer competition!

  1. Carrick's fucking magic says:

oh noooooooo…. no no no no no no no
    no sir i mean no
maybe we’ve got it wrong…maybe he’s gonn abe part of the backroom staff…since he’ll be there all the time

  2. JTrappe says:

no……never…….not in a million years. I’d rather bring Bellion back and miss every shot he took than have Micheal “I’m crocked scouse” Owen. Three words to sum my feelings up – God please NO!!!!!

  3. BEN ARFA says:

Please, bring back MANUCHO from hull
god forbid MICHAEL OWEN EVER joining us!

  4. Jack says:

to be honest im happy with we got now, can anybody name me a poistion that needs filling? put it this way, valenica and nani on the wings..nanis like another ronaldo or can be and fergie will get that out of him, nani has something speical give him time..in the cm we got hargreaves carrick anderson flecther, you choose….in defence brown ferdiand vidic evra, best defence in the world imo and upfront we got rooney and berba who can get loads of goals together next season i reckon and then van der sar or foster in goal and with fergie as manager we cant go wrong.

  5. Linvoy says:

This week has been shit enough now this!

  6. Costas says:

Why? I understand if we have no money to spend and if the 80 million have gone to the Glazer debt. But why sign him? Just give Welbeck, Kiko, Fraizer and Manucho more chances. I agree with Linvoy. Shity week.

  7. CaptainGerrard says:

I thought you official stated that you have a new transfer policy that says you won’t sign anyone above the age of 26, no?

  8. Stephen says:

Not Manucho Costas mate he is awful.

  9. john says:

Jack please do not put nani in the same league as ronaldo they are nothing alike

  10. Scott the Red says:

Captain Gerrard – 1. I think it was The Daily Mail who came up with that story. 2. He’s free.

  11. ChineseElvis says:

Owen was shit even before the scousers got rid of him. Now he’s shitter and older. Hey, why don’t we sign Robbie Fowler too?

  12. Stephen says:

We also don’t spend £18m for rights backs who can’t defend.

  13. rava says:

those of you whinging “shitty week”, you lot are fecking spoilt. we signed valencia couple days ago unless you muppets forgot already.

as for owen – no thanks.

  14. tel says:

fucking get him…hes on a free and give him a pay as you play contract
    what harm can it do

  15. ChineseElvis says:

“nanis like another ronaldo” – please jack, lay off the magic mushrooms

  16. rooneyisclass says:

owen would be a good addition to the squad, its a no lose situation. He`s desperate to show cappello hes good enough to go to the world cup,the only way to do so is by scoring goals and I think utd would create the chances for him.
I dont reckon utd need to buy alot this summer, with welbeck and macheda coming through, get owen in as back up on a pay per play deal.
I still reckon hes got the class to score more goals.

  17. United4eva says:

Why are people believing the media rumours? I’ll be shocked if Sir Alex actually does sign anyone else this summer. I can remember when Ruud left and all the papers linked us to all these different strikers none of whom ended up at Old Trafford. Instead, people moaned for months that we’d ‘wasted’ money on Carrick. Three titles in a row and a Champions League later some people still doubt? Probably Owen’s agent began this rumour to drum up interest. Owen at United? Please!

  18. john says:

rava how are some of the fans spoilt. what also worries more than frustrates us fans is if we cannot attract players last season when we were european and english champions, and cannot attract players when we have won the league 3 times in a row this season then when can we attract players.

  19. jimmy bob says:

Proven goal scorer, used to the prem league,no problm with climate , language etc and no transfer fee

sign him up, and it will piss the dippers off

  20. Anant says:

i have mixed feeling about this to be honest .
my first reaction was not to take this story too seriously . it looked like a shitty piece of journalism .
then i squirmed at the thought of having a born n bred scouser in our team .

but now …thinking about it objectively . these facts are IN favor –
    1) free
2)proven goal scorer – 11 last year , despite being injured n playing for a shit team .
    3) surely better than tevez
    4) wont moan about being on the bench (although having just read scott’s whinger link he seems extremely stupid)
    5) if we hand him a pay as you play contract he wont cost too much
    6) it would be priceless seeing him score against bindippers
    7) following his brochure campaign he has finally realized his true worth n it wont be difficult to negotiate his contract
    8) experience
    9) dont think he will necessarily stand in the way of youth given his injury record

I’m not saying we must sign him . but he does present a decent case and is definitely worth thinking about .

  21. Jack says:

john i said can be, he can do mostly everything ronaldo can do just needs to pass more

  22. Linvoy says:

My thoughts exactly Costas… Iv never known a summer where we,ve had such a kitty to go out & spend… Yet if u believe the papers then it feels nothing like it! I try not to get carried away with paper talk as u never know the real truth… But altho not a massive fan of Benezma I was getting a bit excited at the thought! Plus iv always been keen on Ribery altho again u never know if sir alex rly was! Either way whether it’s true or not being linked with Owen is just depressing!

I can only have faith in Sir Alex that he’ll do something special as he always does! Iv tried not Reading paper & scannning Internet every 5 mins but is a horrid habit! I guess at nearly 30 yrs old I would of grown out of it!!

I guess if RonnIe hadn’t gone I wouldn’t be so anxious! I’ll keep calm & ignore this tripe about Owen!

  23. Stephen says:

United4eva, we did try and sign Benzema so Fergie has obviously targeted a striker.

  24. Jack says:

stephen, how did we try sign benzema? did we put a bid in?

  25. Bealsy says:

Just saw this all over sky sports… It’s their big BREAKING NEWS story. I really am lost for words, if this goes through it will be a little surreal. Who’s gonna sing his name?! Not me lol

  26. hawkeye says:

    how about brining rudd back

  27. denton davey says:

Anant @ 22:26 – you’re right. Free is a good thing; pay-as-you-play is also a huge incentive for him – let’s hope that if he does sign with TheLads that SAF feels he’s under no obligation to play Little Mikey.

Can his mate, Emile Heskey be far behind ?

  28. john says:

Linvoy dont hope to get costa he as a very poor temperment and he is nowhere near ready to be playing in england. he needs 3 years to be ready ronaldo was the latter he was already making some great strides, costa needs to be playing in brazil more before he is ready 2 be playing in the top level.

  29. Stephen says:

    Don’t you believe we didn’t?

  30. Costas says:

@rava: Shitty couple of days. Do you like that more? I am ok with Valencia coming on board, but he is not the answer to the problems we will develop by losing 2 of our highest scorers. And when you go from Benzema to Owen(while you have 80million to spend), i find that shitty. But i may be in the minority.

@Linvoy: The options are running out, that’s the worrying thing. Pretty soon, that money won’t be worth spending.

  31. Jack says:

i dont myself stephen mate, i dont know what to believe really were linked with every player in the world right now like i said im happy with we got , if fergie thinks we need to get someone else then i’ll go along with whatever he does, he always get it right

  32. FailsworthDevil says:

If he can keep fit he is a 1 in 2 goalscorer.

If can score for us against the dippers at the Kop End, then thats gotta be worth sommat aint it???

Might be a piece of magic yet again by SAF, and if it aint then it aint cost us anything…

Its a no lose gamble to us i would say.

  33. Anant says:

Denton – heskey would be a much better option than owen at the moment , if only he fit the free criteria as well . dont want us spending money for players like these . but if they’re being gifted to us , it might be daft on our part to say no

  34. john says:

we have all this money yet we are after rubbish micheal owen and valencia. we already have a poor forward in berbatov yet fergie wants to look to sign a hasbeen in owen. rooney is going to have to carry this side now. makes you wonder we had ronaldo and tevez yet we will have valencia and owen to take their places what a grim prospect. add the garbage we have in anderson nani hargreaves park berbatov, add players coming to the end in scholes giggs yea what a great idea we get owen. another question why are half the players who want to play for united are average, it seems all the top players dream of real madrid very annoying.

  35. HuSsAiN says:

Scott, i’m sorry, but i have to agree with them.

    1) Nearly everyone says they would stay all their life in the club they have settled in, however, he moved, so what? big deal.

    2) he’s injury prone, i agree, but he will get alteast 20 games from the bench. he wouldn’t mind that.

a target for Hull? so what :S?
anyone that scores against any team gets happy, and he’s a striker.. so scoring means alot.

  36. Howfener says:

Jesus, I first read about Owen on a messageboard I read and now here. Where is this rumour coming from? He’d be a decent substitute if he was on a pay to play contract I guess but we need someone who’s healthy and more of a target man.

  37. Stephen says:

Mate I think Fergie is a big fan of his Jack, but fuck knows we probably will be linked to Robbie Fowler tomorrow.

  38. Costas says:

VAssell is free from City, so why not him?Bah.

  39. evras left boot says:

For the love of god no ! Let’s be honest here tho , this deal will never happen in a million years and i think all avid united fans know this ! Do people think fergie has lost it this much that he’s willing to sign a sick note whos probably looking in the region of 60k a week.

Its transfer time , everyone put on their rational hats for a minute and stop believing everything in the rags :)

  40. rossee says:

F@$k me ..i love man utd but Michael Owen?????…….talk about panic buy…Fergie do us a favour and sign Aguero, Sanchez, Yaya Toure (to replace hargreaves the Crock) & Huntelaar……..f@&K it …i reckon we should sign that Royston Drenthe..he’s a hardcore left midfielder and would be available for cheap as !!!

Still gonna do it yet again next year though…….

  41. Jack says:

remember guys were not like madrid, we dont just go buy every world class player about, we buy good players and turn them into world class players.

  42. john says:

hey got some great neews sol campbel is on a free transfer maybe fergie should sign him is well. our transfer plans seem to mirror bolton getting players on the verge of ending their career, why we are at it lets sign paul gasgoine he is a free agent

  43. yohannes says:

Give him a chance since he is for free. I don’t see any harm. It will also open a chance for kiko and welback to play when he get injured. Remember if Owen is fit believe me he still have the good passe and finishing that is better than Berbatove.

  44. Carrick's fucking magic says:

we’re the laughing stock of world football at the moment :( ….ahh i wish the season would start already

they’re making fun of us…check this out :(

    http://clockenders.com/afc/wp-content/uploads/feederclub.jpg

  45. United Rant says:

This isn’t true. It can’t be true. I just don’t want to believe it.

It’s some kind of dystopian nightmare in which every decent player on the planet rejects us, Fergie catches swine flu and on his death bed signs Michael Owen.

But if I don’t wake, and IT happens, I will cut my own heart out with a rusty spoon and walk to Carrington to deliver it still beating to Fergie’s door.

  46. Gudjohnsen says:

He would be ok as a backup striker on a pay-as-you-play contract. But I guess it would seem much more logical to give our youngsters a chance instead of him. Strange though to think of this situation, we try for Benzema around 25-30 million pounds and switch to Owen, a free 29 year old injury prone ex-dipper who’s desperate of injecting some life into his career before the world cup.

I’d rather want us to get someone for the future…or just keep F.Campbell as backup if that’s what we’re looking for. I’d perhaps accept Owen if we were having a really bad injury spell in January or something (similar situation when we got Henrik Larsson on loan) and we were desperate for a proven striker.

  47. john says:

Gudjohnsen exactly we may is well give campbell a go he is a better bet than owen

  48. stretford972 says:

can’t believe the shit we’re bein linked with. Owen is a joke, shows no ambition at all. You lose the best player in the world and replace him with this has-been, hardly gets you excited for the new season. And for the record, huntelaar is shit, would rather have owen on a free. He’s got no pace, poor movement, poor technique, doesn’t contribute outside the box and is a real madrid flop. Fed up of listenin to fans goin on about how we need him when they never seen him play 90mins. Same with douglas costa, we shouldn’t pay big money for him, he’s not even a regular now. Remember, just because someone?s good on championship manager doesn’t mean he’s good enough for a team who’s ment to be challengin for the premier league and european cup in the real world

  49. chris kirk says:

if this does happen… anyone want to buy a season ticket in the north stand next year?

  50. 20LEgend says:

Dosen’t he support Everton? Or I am making that up??!

  51. john says:

stretford972 exactly costa as a poor temperment he is nowhere near ready enough to move from brazil. fergies transfers in general since 2007 have not worked out long term. anderson nani hargreaves tevez berbatov none of them have layed the foundations for future success and we all want new players.

  52. smithy99 says:

I saw earlier that the odds on him joining us have dropped dramatically.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens.

  53. Costas says:

Lets just say that buyin Owen solves the problem with the attack(when you think about it, he will get more league goals than Tevez). What happens to the 80 million then? Saved for next summer?

  54. Red-Manc says:

I have very mixed feelings about this one.

    positives:

    He’s Free
proven goal scorer in the premier league
wont mind being on the bench
    experienced
still hungry for success (he hasnt acheived much)
it will piss the vermin off

    negatives:

he’s way past his best; so he wont sort out our long term lack of a striker
he used to play for the vermin; our supporters wont react well to him if he doesnt give 100%
injury prone; but that would give our youth a chance

If we do bring him to Old Trafford i hope its on a pay as you play deal, I can see him playing a similar role to Larsson when he came.

Whatever people say and feel about us getting Owen, its definatly not a panic buy if Fergie was panicing he would of offered a ridiculous amount of money for some random player, he has a reason for wanting Owen.

Sir Alex is the best manager this league has ever seen hence the fact we are so successfull, a bloody panic buy? dont make me laugh.

  55. Andy says:

Been a season ticket holder for over 15 years. I’ve put up with the Glazers takeover, the stupid cup scheme, most of which I am unable to attend, the continued hike in prices year after year, higher taxes, increased fuel costs to get to games – and now this.

If we sign this washed up, continually injured, money grabbing one legged nag I for one am going to demand my money back and forfeit my season ticket.

I can understand Ronaldo being sold and accept it, I can appreciate the Tevez situation. I don’t mind us having the odd season without a trophy provided the youngsters are given opportunity to be blooded. But this really will be beyond a joke!

Rant over, now to take up the art of devil worshipping

  56. Colbert says:

There’s no way anyone can convince me that Fergie planned for the departures of Ronnie and Tevez with the signing of Owen. Looks like our transfer strategy for this summer – if we had one – has gone well and truly out of the window.

At least, he’d be a free transfer.

  57. Andy says:

Forgot to add I hate the scouse past, present and future!

  58. King Eric says:

I have never liked him, in fact really dislike him but you can’t argue with a 2 in 1 stat. Free. Pay as you play. Nowt to lose. As people have said it would be priceless him scoring at the Kop End. Really can’t see it happening though.

John – Bit negative there mate. “yet we will have valencia and owen to take their places what a grim prospect. add the garbage we have in anderson nani hargreaves park berbatov” What the fuck?

  59. Johnny says:

I hope we’re aiming a bit higher in this window than Michael f*****g Owen

  60. Costas says:

    At least, lets get Silva…

  61. tony singh says:

Excellent move .. he be prepared to sit on the bench and wait his turn and will help macheda and wellbeck .. few on hear will eat there words!!

  62. MUFC the Religion says:

Ruud Van Nistelrooy la la la la la

Ruud Van Nistelrooy la la la la la

Surely we must get him back. Even if it’s for a season. The incentive of adding to his already awesome United goalscoring record would surely be to good to resist. I love the man. The fans would love him. No Ronaldo anymore so there won’t be any arguments or bust-ups. I’m sure he’s retired from the national team so he won’t demand a starting place to prove himself for Holland. He scores goals simple as.

Would only cost £2 million maximum.

  63. ledo says:

Fook me ive read some bollocks on here but ‘laughing stock’ and all the like? FFS, we won a few pots last year and granted we have lost 2 top players but we have got a few more good lads you know! He isnt the answer but on a free with wages tied to incentive deal? There just cannot be any harm in it. He knows how to score and with the worldcup coming up its amazing how a player changes when he is happy at a club and he never has been at sid james’. Some of you people need to calm down with your negative judgements. If Owen does come, then the chances are the gaffer has other plans as well.

  64. Sim_Sima69 says:

look guys..owen is a stop-gap and that is IT. fergie wants to bring through welbeck and macheda but doesnt want to put too much pressure on them so a third choice striker with premiership and champs league experience with a very good goals to games ratio (when fit) is exactly what we need right now..

a lot of people will be pissed that we have so much money but wont spend it like real madrid but do we really need to??? all you have to look at is a few of last seasons games

    our reserve side outplayed hull
our mostly reserve side should have beaten everton
a mixed of youth and experience won the carling cup

i think we can beat any team outside the top 6 with ONLY valencia as our new signing and i dont think we need to spend crazily to put ourselves in a strong position next year. with tosic nani welbeck macheda rafael fabio gibson (and maybe ljiajic) all pushing for starting places im feeling positive about next season. my only doubt is will we have enough fire power against the big boys? i hope so..

  65. United Rant says:

Not the first time a United star was sold for big bucks and then we recruited somebody on a free… Jaap Stam >>> Lauren Blanc. That one worked out well didn’t it! The purse strings must be on tight. Otherwise why back down over an extra £6m for Benzema and then look to ageing, injured, failed Toon washed up striker who’s got no pace, no desire and no bloody quality left.

  66. Johnny says:

http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid={F9E570E6-407E-44BC-800F-4A3110258114}&newsid=6635613 Possebon heading out on loan for a year. Slightly disappointed, i thought he might have been breaking onto the bench this year but at least hes being lined up as one for the future

  67. john says:

King Eric what I mean is hargreaves anderson nani berbatov have not worked out. non of them have have filled the voids in the midfield four or positioned well with rooney. hargreaves and anderson have not establised their roles in midfield. nani as not filled the void on the left and bebatov as been poor upfront alongsode rooney. if these signings have worked out then why in the hell is everyone crapping their pants of losing ronaldo and buying more players

  68. bingo says:

this speaks volumes about our ambitions right now! David Gill has some questions to answer over his ineptitude in the transfer market. I mean micheal owen, is that really the best calibre of player we can attract to our club? Champions of England and the world, runners up in the champions league and apparantly the best we can do with a kitty of 80 million is sign micheal owen. I hope if its true he bangs in 30 goals next season but i just cant see it. I’m lost for words!

  69. wakey says:

We surely shouldn’t be concerned, there is no way Owen could pass a medical right?

Mind you I was expecting Saha to stay last season as I didn’t see him passing a medical and he did.

If we do get Owen we must be signing another striker too. Fergie saw the problem Saha gave us with his never being fit and while he may see a risk worth taking surely its only worth doing with someone else. As good as Welbeck and Kiko may be if Rooney or Berba get injured or suspended we cant be reliant on Owen being fit and Kiko and Welbeck alone.

Perhaps Owen might do a job while someone like Aguero or Huntelaar adjusts to England and Kiko/Welbeck learning their trade with apperances here and there

  70. sean_m11 says:

off topic but possebons gone on loan to sporting braga in portugal for the season.

regarding owen, i’d take the punt on a free transfer, pay as you play deal. back up for rooney and berbatov.

  71. Altonian says:

Wouldn’t be suprising if this was just a load of bullshit.

    Taken from the telegraph story;
“Reliable sources have confirmed to Telegraph Sport that Owen is on the brink of joining the Premier League champions after becoming a free agent when his contract at Newcastle expired on Tuesday.” – So which sources are these exactly?

And from BBC; “We don’t comment on transfer rumours,” a United spokesman told BBC Sport.”

I find it hard to believe that Ferguson would go from being prepared to pay £30m for a top young striker to replacing that target with a 29 year old injury plagued one. Yes he may score a few goals but realistically he isn’t going to fill much of the void left by Ronaldo, Fergie knows this as well. I wouldn’t have a problem with it happening but only if it’s on a pay as you play deal, it’s a win win situation really.

For people who say we are probably not going to sign anyone else, I’m not sure why you’d think that. We need another winger, Nani is simply not good enough and Tosic will probably be played into the team over the season. Central midfield is a problem as well, Fletcher did well last season and got a lot of praise, but still, he isn’t the world class player we need there. I still expect another couple of signings at least.

  72. wakey says:

    @Johnny

I think a year playing first team football in a fairly competitive league will do him good. Then when we find out how Hargo goes and when Giggs and Scholes hand up their boots he will be better positioned to be a contender to play atleast semi regularly

  73. wakey says:

    @Altonian

Perhaps like Valencia Owen was an option whatever happened. Seriously I can only see the value of Owen if its Owen + another younger striker

  74. Pat says:

I don’t get you United fans. Arsenal fan here and I do agree Owen is not worth BUYING, but you’re not buying him. He’s coming on a free and rumors say he’ll be paid 40,000 quid a week. Thats a gamble worth taking considering he scored 11 goals for a shitty Newcastle side. All the Arsenal fans are having a laugh. I would to, but your not wasting much money on him. Worth the gamble as a 4th striker, no?

  75. 20legend says:

This cannot possibly be for real. Besides he wouldn’t survive a gentle prodding in the hammys far less a ‘stringent medical’. calm down fellas this nightmare will not happen.

  76. utd7 says:

Is this a joke? I will always love my team and support them but this is a slap on the face. I would rather we did not sign anyone. Those saying give this a chance get real. This the glazers taking fergies hard work and putting the 80 mil in the debt pool and telling him to operate ona shoe string. Valencia is no better than nanai. What a joke. God help my teanm. Glazers out.

  77. Trevor says:

At first i was christ no! But it may turn out to be good business! We get him on a free, so only have to pay his wages which i am sure he will accept lower than at Hull, or Blackburn because he will be with Us and playing Champions league football!

Fair enough he didnt set the world alight at Newcastle, but look at what he had around him! He didnt have many goals put on a plate for him.

Ive never been a fan of owen as all i see is that he had pace, which he no longer has!

If we gamble on him do we really loose that much if it doesnt work out??? Im sure we could sell him for a couple of mil to pay back any wages we paid him!!

If im honest id rather go for Tuncay of Middlesborough, 5 mil and we would get a more reliable player.

  78. TK99 says:

I think this Move,if it’s happened, reflects how desperate we were for Benzema….for God’s sake how did us let slip out of our hands ????
    shitty week.

  79. Pat says:

Some of you here do not watch football, honestly. You lads are spoiled. Valencia is your best midfielder, trust me. Nani is shit, I agree. Valencia ALWAYS gives us an awful time, be it Clichy playing or Gibbs. He always twists them inside-out.

Have to admit though, comparing everyones midfield, on paper, doesn’t look good for United atm with no Hargreaves.

    Arsenal(most creative midfield)
Rosicky Cesc Song(new signing probably) Arshavin

    Chelsea(most powerful midfield)
    Ballack Essien Lampard Malouda

    United:(most hardworking? exception is Nani)
    Valencia Carrick Fletcher/Anderson Nani/Giggs

    Liverpool:(most defensively stable midfield)
    Kuyt Xabi Mascherano Riera

  80. Pat says:

Valencia will do well for United and it’ll benefit Rooney no doubt.

  81. FusilliJerry says:

34 years supporting United. Have never felt embarrassed the way I do right now, have never known the club to be so pathetically downwardly mobile.

  82. Evratov says:

Jesus christ, please say it ain’t so. Owen is the architype of football mercinaries, looking for his payday and doesn’t care who he shits on whilst doing it.

Here is a perfect example of his personallity and demeanour:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqOxNspUPyE

Now seriously tell me you want that at our club. I’d rather sign Dave Kitson…..

  83. King Eric says:

John – Most sane United fans should NOT “be crapping their pants about losing Ronaldo and buying more players”. Have some faith.

  84. godpye says:

Maybe we should sign the scouse prick on a money per goal basis.

  85. 9jmac says:

    sign him

  86. smithy99 says:

    As i’ve said before fella’s……

Don’t panic….Fergie knows what he’s doing. Trust him!!

  87. KJ says:

Hahahahahaha and its not even April fool’s day yet!

  88. Ohhh_Ahhh says:

    is this fucking 1998?!?!

  89. fuzzy says:

Scott, here is an interesting piece of info that United supporters in the UK may not have come across – The Glazers owned Tampa Bay Buccaneers have spent the least amount of money in the NFL in the last five years(2004-2008 seasons).

    http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/06/26/moneyball-nfl-style/

This is a group of owners which doesn’t really like to spend big which may be the reason somebody like Benzema was not pursued aggressively.

  90. King Eric says:

utd7 – Relax pal. Do you honestly think Sir Alex would be “told to operate on a shoestring ” as you put it , from the Glazers? He would walk. Simple as. Get real. The negativity coming from some people this summer is a piss take.

  91. john says:

valencias goals for record 7 goals in 3 seasons. ronaldos goals record in 3 seasons 91 goals see the difference

  92. john says:

CONGRATS JTrappe you are now a writer for the daily Mail HAHAHA
They are quoting you in the DAILY MAIL
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1197195/Taking-Michael-Manchester-United-set-sign-Owen-free-transfer.html?ITO=1490

  93. King Eric says:

Totally different players John. How much tracking back did Ronnie do last 2 seasons or so.

I can’t be arsed with this tonight. I’m off.

  94. william says:

Owen is more fragile than Saha……enough said!

  95. william says:

Everton’s Cahill would be a good addition to the TEAM.

  96. john says:

FusilliJerry when ronaldo is sold and half the team cant get to doble figures in goals then it is a worry

  97. vishnu1729 says:

hai mates its now clear that we wont sign any strikers….
but fergie will bolster the midfield………we must show respect to berba …as he is one of the best strikers in premiership…we cant annoy him due to his playing style..

  98. vishnu1729 says:

oh my god……..owen will sign today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
one of the freakiest news of this month..it will certainly shock the other teams…bcoz of the superspeciality medical team of manu…..
lets imagine owen with fully fit…scoring goals for fun……
for me after god its saf!!!!!!!!lets hope good.

  99. Costas says:

Huntelaar doesn’t sound so bad now. At least he is a current Real reject, not a 4 year ago Real reject.

  100. johnnycarey'sbaggyshorts says:

Jesus lads, calm down. This could be a very shrewd piece of business. Ten reasons why:

    1. He is free – no financial gamble as there would be be Aguero, Villa etc.
    2.

  101. john says:

this is a joke micheal owen its like they are taking the piss. but you look at this midfield and it is awful signing owen does nothing for me, we are the real madrid of the past 2 seasons signing mediocre rubbish being signed. dont forget people laughing at madrid last year on who they were signing now we are doing the same

  102. Gman says:

hahaha i think its quite funny if its true.. ive been trashing him for so many years.. cant imagine him in the Man Utd shirt.

But i learned many years ago that Ferguson knows what he is doing, so i keep my faith in him.

But seriously Scott you should put a photoshop picture of him wearing the man utd shirt, i just cant imagine it..

  103. Harun says:

    I’m feeling sick.

  104. Red Rupert says:

So this is where Scotty and the children squabble

Grow up mate. Digging old and cheap quotes out of context are the things you probably criticise journalists for

I’m just glad Fergie is in charge instead of disrespectful muppets that drown his end of season speech out with chanting for a 2nd rate money-grabbing, back stabbing Argie.

  105. Pat says:

John, valencia is totally different than CR. He’s a hardworker and it’ll allow Rooney the role he loves and excels in(10 goals in 7 for England). He’s a great crosser and his dribbling is more effective than CR’s. I’m an Arsenal fan and I’m not stupid. United will be a force next season and its stupid to think otherwise.

Big whoop, you lost CR. we lost Henry and Ade replaced him with a tremendous season. I still think he’s capable, but the wages/Milan attention made him a bit of a lazy prick.

Henry was a greater loss for us than CR is for you and we did fine, but the injuries hit, like always.

Just thinking about Henry makes me sad. 02/03: 32 goals and 28 assists. Direct contribution to AT LEAST 60 goals!!!!!!! Never won POY. Fuck Blatter and Platini and whoever rigged the voting. Sorry, rant over =D

  106. kapti14 says:

    so yet again team modification:

    vds

    brown rio vidic evra

    fletcher carrick

    valencia rooney

    berbatov

    owen

well well well if it works it will be the biggest trick ever realised since satan fooled everyone by making us think he does not exist.

  107. Pat says:

Ah yes, forgot that you’re midfield isn’t that great anymore. Ade had goals left and right handed to him by our creative midfield.

  108. Football1st says:

Im kinda split right down the middle on this one.

    1. Maybe SAF can get something out of him, and he would be happy to sit on the bench, sharing some experience to Welbeck and Macheda ect ect………………

    2. Pretty pissed off we havnt secured world class replacements for Tevez and Ronaldo. I think we all wanted to see the likes of Benzema and Ribery ect…………..come in.

It really comes down to the faith i have in SAF and im sticking by him, i think he knows what hes doing.

  109. Pat says:

Rooney should be a CAM a la Totti. Thats what he’s best at and everyone seems to see it, even Rooney, except Ferguson.

Not my problem though. I only have 3 wishes for next season.

    1. Arsenal win the league
2.Chelsea drop out of the top 4
    3. Spuds get relegated

  110. nbfw says:

It won’t be so bad if we bring in Aguero aswell, plus maybe another centre mid, but if we don’t i’ll be so dissapointed

  111. john says:

valencia is another of those average wide players. it is the same with the other areas, like carrick anderson hargreaves nani park valencia berbatov they are not good enough. even scholes and giggs are not good enough now well giggs is stll quiet good enough. would any of those players get into the top sides I dont think so.

  112. Pat says:

john, Hargreaves is great. I’d take him over Denilson/Song any day

  113. Pat says:

Mirror says United are in for Fabiano. I hope you don’t get him. He’s a good striker.

  114. simon says:

The knee jerk reactions are all too predictable and the article is appalling.

Silly fans only appeased by pointless big money spending.

I have two words: Sheringham and Larsson.

Owen can emulate both at Utd. He will be a very good impact player from the bench (more so than Tevez who couldn’t score in a brothel) and more importantly he will be happy to be a part of a squad rotation system. He will also be a valuable mentor to the likes of Wellbeck. As a squad player who has done it at the highest level (please check his record at liverpool and madrid) and won the European Footballer of the year award, he is definitely worth a punt on a pay as you play deal.

Most of the time Utd are going to play 1 up front, two at the most. So this signing makes alot more sense then spending a fortune on a center forward who we can’t guarantee game time too. We already have two 30M strikers in Rooney and Berbatov. We didn’t need another.

Now we can turn our attention to the midfield.

Grow up children, especially the author.

  115. john says:

Pat hargreaves is great at being injured that is his great strength

  116. themarkedman72 says:

    SHIT.

  117. Pat says:

    lol john. He’s great*

    *If player is fit

    Simon, well said.

  118. smithy99 says:

    @john

Christ we’ve not even seen Valencia pull on a United shirt yet….give the lad a chance!!!

  119. john says:

simon sheringham offered more off the ball. plus sheringham was still in his prime the difference is owen is not in his prime he is way past his sell by date. what does owen do off the ball he his awful on the ball anyway and how would playing one upfront help now. we have lost the one player that would do that for us in ronaldo and united must play 2 upfront now

  120. Saad says:

Spot on Scott. Fabiano is a good option if we can get him for the right price which is highly unlikely after his exploits in the confed cup. He is someone who can play in front of rooney cuz berba likes tto drop deep and we can even fit all 3 of them in 4-3-3 also since both valencia and park can play central midfield we can accomodate our wide players behind the trio

  121. MKRed says:

I really am in a state of shock. In the week we officially lose Ronaldo and Tevez, the week we miss out on our No 1 target (who we’ve been trailing for two seasons), we find ourselves going head to head with Stoke City and Hull for a Liverpool, Real Madrid AND England reject.

And we, the fans, are expected to be happy about this?

Think about it: we offloaded Saha because of his fitness record, yet we are trying to sign someone who makes Louis look a picture of health. And the Owen of today, when fit, is nowhere near as good as Saha.

Not just that we’re shunting a striker out the door, Fraizer Campbell, while another promising youngster, Rodrigo Possebon, is being sent to Portugal on loan.

Will someone please tell us what is really going on? Why are so many top-quality players – Ronaldo, Tevez, Benzema, Ribery, Kaka, Villa, etc, that we know of – rejecting us?

We should be shopping at Harrods, not the Oxfam shop, yet that’s what’s happening when we’re linked with the likes of Owen and that other Real cast-off Huntelaar.

At the moment it looks like all the Ronny money will do is ease some of the Glazer-inflicted debt. We, the fans and season ticket holders, are being treated with utter contempt.

  122. john says:

Saad what on eart are you talking about. park and valencia can play central midfield who next john o shea upfront. park is awful on the wings let alone play him in CM

  123. Gudjohnsen says:

I think it will be in our advantage that people write us off next season. When Ruud left many people predicted us 4-5th place in the league.

  124. Ohhh_Ahhh says:

Probably a huge factor in these “big name players” rejecting is that Manchester does not have the WAG appeal, desirable lifestyle of say Barcelona, Madrid, Milan or even London. Im sure if we were a London club then these players would be falling over themselves to sign for us.

  125. john says:

Gudjohnsen yea true but united had ronaldo in his prime scholes giggs rooney saha solkjaer hitting form vds g neville ferdinand vidic evra with backups of brown on fire this current side seems to be heading for mediocrity or the unthinkable decline just like the 03/04 squad.

  126. john says:

united also suffering from players not coming through the academey, fergie no longer finding those certain gems who also had the club at heart.
the 99 squad was infested with proper and real pros who all loved the club and they had long term plans to stay at the club.

  127. HERDINO says:

i believe its true..SAF will bring him along wiv another striker..we know that SAF is huge fan of owens…this rumour has been spread over couple years ago, since owen screwed in madrid..fortunately, newcastle offer more money for him to madrid..now he’s free, thats d point..i hate this summer..why dont we sign obafemi instead of him?or anyone else but not this real madrid reject?????we feed madrid our best player, n they give their carcasses?even bitters dont want him no more..

  128. Dave Mack says:

I agree with @Simon said. We don’t need another 30m striker – we’ve got two already.

It sounds to me like great business. An experinced striker, not concerned if he doesn’t play 90 mins or every game, probabaly on a pay as you play type contract, has a lot he can teach the kids, good mates with Rooney and the English lads, will settle in right away.

Too many posts here trot out the same flawed thinking that says SAF should do something different than he would otherwise do because he’s got an extra 100m+ due to Ronaldo and not signing Tevez. That’s the road to ruin. Cause you’ve got a ton of money in your pocket you don’t stop looking for value.

Far from panic buying this sounds to me like vintage Fergie!

  129. Eric Kantono says:

With all the facts you mentioned above, absolutely big NO lads!
    Enough said!!

  130. Manc4Life says:

I guess you haven’t considered the fact that he is free.

The fact that he is a proven goalscorer and no matter where he plays he scores a goal every other game, or there about.

The fact that he is a proven Premier League performer.

Yes, he is injury prone but he will only be back up. Rooney and Berbatov are still the main men, he just gives us a different option. You don’t think the injury trouble might decrease if he isn’t having to play every single game?

I’m no Owen fan, and I have very mixed feelings, but you can’t just present such a one sided argument and ignore the obvious pros which would go with signing him.

If it doesn’t work out then big deal, we don’t lose much and we still have very talented youngsters in Welbeck and Macheda to rely on.

  131. Gman says:

    tZ thanks

    man it really looks weird…

  132. Adrian says:

i think its alright for us. we need someone who is willing to sit on the bench when needed, with experience to lead the line say for 20 minutes a game, and who wont be too expensive. If he is taking 50k per week, it wouldnt be that bad considering that Macheda will take 40k starting next season.

But SAF need to realize that Owen isnt a solution to anything and our hunt for another striker, be it Aguero or Gignac or whoeverelse, should continue.

  133. john says:

Adrian thats if owen can even get on the bench he is buckeroo owen simple as that

  134. vidicgonnagetye says:

    PLEASE NOT OWEN!!!

  135. Manu says:

We are signing Owen and Possebon is gone on loan. This totally sucks. :(

  136. john says:

hey lets sell vidic and get sol campbell on a free transfer

  137. MUFC the Religion says:

    explain why it sucks then.

  138. Red_Ruth says:

Initial reaction was “this has to be a wind up” but the more you think about it, the more it makes sense. It’ll put the pressure on Rooney and Berba to coe up with the goals. Kiko and Wellbeck will be given more playing time. Who know’s Owen could become our super sub!
    In Fergie We Trust

  139. kapti14 says:

sir ferguson knows what he is doing .

let him run his club you douches.

stop acting like little paris hilton.

  140. satishk says:

United have nothing to lose in this deal. Here’s why

Owen will come on a free transfer
He’ll get paid more if he scores (we don’t mind that)
Won’t crib about being a sub
Is a handful when he’s playing well

Remember Henrik Larsson a couple of seasons agi, this might not be a bad deal after all.

  141. pawaka21 says:

its just stupid, fucking created The Sun story…never gonna believe in million years…fucking tabloid cunts…

  142. john says:

kapti14 true but Cmon micheal owen why dnt we sign col campbel why we are at it and robbie fowler

  143. oohaahcantona says:

yeah let’s trust fergie. there’s no reason why we should.
he won’t be as bad as we think… but it does look like a brown -> saha -> hargreaves -> owen… we’re starting to look like rehab.

so long as he doesn’t take #7.

actually i think ashley young would be a good buy.

  144. Red_Ruth says:

    John, dont forget David Beckham!

  145. rachelreddevil says:

Valencia last year absolutly rang rings round our defence and many others in the prem. Ronaldo had all the skill and no end product at the start what did we do with him…………… i don’t know why everyone keeps going on about benzema he was the top scorer in a mediocre league and apparently hes big headed so i guess he will fit in well at madrid. Tevez was a hard worker yes but i have to say that no one ever believed that he could always change any match at any time with a bit of magic. Ronaldo going was always on the cards ever since the ‘winker’ saga. No one will ever really fill his boots. but this a chance for others to stand up and play a different way.
Another encouraging thing is that not one of our proper rivals are buying either.
i think we will always have promising youngsters but sometimes we need experiance and thats what owen brings. him fully fit is miles better then tevez and most of the strikers in the prem.
This def rooneys year apart from vida he was our best player last year and he can only get better.
I will always have faith in SAF yes hes made mistakes but hes learnt from them.
let the press and other fans say what they want they will be eating their words when we go for the quadruple and win it

    united forever

keep the red flag flying high
coz man united will never die

    Believe

    In fergie we trust

  146. john says:

oh yea and beckham add vierra and vassel he is on a free

  147. Red_Ruth says:

Not even joking about Beckham, why not? He’s still an excellent crosser of the ball. 75 mins gone and in need of a goal, you can rely on him to find a special pass, maybe even a cheeky free kick. Stranger things have happened….RE: Michael Owen!

  148. venu says:

I am not sure this is so bad after all. Considering that we inflated the markets with CR7 sale, I am sure SAF must have known all year long what he wants to do. I would rather we wait till the winter window when the prices are more realistic and we don’t do any panic buys. And the kids need a proper go too, can’t see that happening if we had brought in a young talented striker. The only other option would have been etoo but at his salary, we know which is the cheaper option.

  149. john says:

Red_Ruth no way beckham is also past it

  150. cantona7 says:

Firstly Scott, and JTrappe, congrats for being quoted in a news website.

I cant comment on this. Very mixed feeling. Conclusion: In Fergie we trust.

/ps Pat your most creative midfield can be the most clueless sometimes.

  151. skit160 says:

why is everyone complaining? he will get a pay-as-you play deal, what harm can it do? campbell is leaving and manucho’s rubbish, kiko and welbeck need time… he will be a good backup striker.

  152. pawaka21 says:

if he does sign…rob swire will be tied up…our medical bil will spiraled up and treatment room will always be occupied..shame

  153. Keano Playing Nice says:

Lads, you have to think of team chemistry. Just imagine all the time Owen and Hargo will have together!

  154. tracey says:

Appearing in an anti-United article on the Daily Mail, you must be so proud. What a pathetic article and the responses, hope Owen shoves your comments back down your throats you spoilt brats.

Having said that I don’t think he will as he’s so reliant on pace, but he’s for nowt so so what.

“then i squirmed at the thought of having a born n bred scouser in our team .”

What do you think Rooney is dimwit, Owen’s an Evertonian like him.

  155. spacemanspiff says:

Getting Michael Owen makes sound business sense. According to reports, he will be on 50k per week (half of what he was getting at Newcastle) plus bonuses depending on appearances, goals and trophies.

We got Larsson when he was much older and had recovered from a serious injury and he did the job for the 3 odd months he was here. Laurent Blanc was also old when he came here and he was hugely influential.

Owen is 29, has the knack of scoring goals and can run (at least used to) at defenders. We have Berba and/or Rooney creating chances and Owen finishing them off. I’m pretty sure United can do a better job of keeping Owen fit than Newcastle.

So, all in all, this makes sound business sense and Fergie might have just done it again. The sad part is seeing an ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid man pull on the United shirt, but we will have to make our peace with that. Once the goals start pouring, everything will be forgotten.

  156. kaihnsn says:

if owen can keep himself fit i think that not a problem. just maybe because he’s a scouser eh. remember 99 we got cole and yorkie as a first choice then solskjaer and teddy as supersub. so if owen can play replicate that role is good enough for me.

  157. jcolas says:

    Welbeck or Macheda > Owen

  158. jcolas says:

    oh yeah @ dumbass Tracey

Owen is an evertonian? Really? So Owen would score in the loserpool derby and the everton fans would clap? Has rooney ever ran to the kop kissing a dipper’s badge? DON’T think so.

  159. jespermoses says:

Its a dark day for United evn being linked with that overrated cocksucker!!!

We should start a petition to NOT SIGN MICHEAL OWEN,

  160. AIG Alex is GOD says:

To Carrick’s fucking magic: let them make fun.maybe we need to remind them of the comparision in achievements of both clubs in last 5 years .let the season start and those bastards will realise where they truely belong.barca will whip them in spanish league and we will in the champions league.

  161. HERDINO says:

    CR7 back to DB7?rooney backto 8,owen got 10..

  162. dre says:

u whole lot are talking as if HE would wanna play for US to begin with. desperate yes, over-the-board-looney not yet.

  163. Marq says:

Actually, I think its worth a punt. What have we got to lose? just ask yourself an question. How many goals did Tevez score last year and how many did Owen get?

  164. samm says:

    FAMOUS:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1197195/Taking-Michael-Manchester-United-set-sign-Owen-free-transfer.html

getting owen is okay. as long as its pay as you play deal. he is a proven goal scorer and would be good infoo for youngsters such as welbeck and macheda.

  165. AIG Alex is GOD says:

He may prove to be a good signing.even if he scores 12-15 goals it wnt be bad, plus he wont mind sitting on the bench.Afterall u dont lose your goalscoring touch.just ask van Nistelrooy.plus free transfer ,no probs especially wen u r buying a player desperate to get his England place back

  166. CraigB says:

I havent read all the comments. Has anyone mentioned a minor raid on a few dutchamn? I know the targets for Sir Alex are seemingly going eslewhere or staying put, but the options of quality players are still there. There are bound to be atleast two dutchman not in the starting line up this season at Madrid, and if given the right price would surely leave for a starting place at Old Trafford.
On the Owen issue. If he is free, lets see what he can do? Cant do any harm to have a Liverpool bloke sitting on the bench when taking on the shits at Anfield.

  167. Kevin says:

Recent reports supporting the news from SkySports. I gotta say I think he can still play but as Scott points out he has a lot of downside. His upside is solid but his downside is huge. I just do not see it as a good move. I don’t think it would be the worst signing, as suggested by some, but think better options exist. I would rather see a more in-form player brought in but I won’t be worried or unduly bothered by Owens addition.

  168. knightsmith says:

Fuck me, i’ve had enough of the dippers taking the piss about our failings in the transfer market, and now this! perhaps Hargo needs somenone to keep him company on match days.

We’ll be signing Dean Windass next!

  169. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    he’s old
he’s alot slower than he used to be due to injury
he ,after a big injury, became very injury prone
but he was a one shot needed
    one goal scored player
and his name was henrik larsson
    so who knows about owen

  170. davetian says:

Now, i’m not an I-told-you-so kinda guy, but i fucking told you so!!! You all mocked me months ago when i said this would happen, look who’s right now!!! Never fucking doubt me. He’s free, he can score goals, and he’s probably hungry as fuck. The United player i hold in the highest regard (and my choice for next manager) is Solsjkaer, i love the man and, yeah, i might’ve shed a tear at his testimonial, and i would never ever compare Micheal Owen to him. But if we sign Owen he would be the best goalscoring option from the bench we have had since the days of Ole, and thats the role he will take on. I’d of loved Benzema, and I’d still love Huntelaar, but we suffer as a club from Manchesters reputation as a city when it comes to players so it’s hard as fuck to attract players, so Owen is a cracking option (especially since we’ll probably have his pants down over the contract). Fuck sake, a Serbian who played in Russia has even been known to complain about how shitty Manchester and it’s weather is!!!

And as for all the people complaining the dont want an ex Liverpool player I have 3 words for you – Carlos Fucking Tevez. Never has a player got the backing of the crowd like he did, and quite frankly he’s made us all looks like c*nts. Fucking crying because he didnt wanna leave, then turning down one of the best contract offers in our clubs (and we are a big club, no doubt) history!! Fucking c*nt, i hope he burns in hell now and is forced to rim Bernard Manning on an hourly basis. And it looks like he’s off the Citeh!!! We took his side (actually, i never took his side, most of you c*nts did) against a man who has single handedly taken us from a sleeping giant into the global force we are today in 20+ years of glorious football, and he’s proper thrown it in our faces. Well not just thrown it in our faces, he’s picked up some white dog-shit and slowly smeared it across our faces, and the clubs general existence. Metaphorically speaking, obviously. So dont throw club loyalty at me, fuck that. Give me a professional who will play for the shirt with pride and passion anyday. Smudger was / is a legend in my eyes, and he openly hated United before we signed him. He won us over, let’s give this pint-sized shit a chance to as well. And i dont care if orange gob Phil Brown has publicly been rimming him, or even that Fat Sam claims he’s too injury prone, i’d back the gaffers judgement over these two key-party c*nts anyday. And so what if he’s possibly the most boring twat ever, how fucking great would it be to see him score against the Dippers and celebrate like he’s just been told he’s won a foursome with Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, and Jennifer Aniston. You never know, he may actually score some goals which play a part in us winning something, and i’m down with that. I may even wrench him off.

Of more concern should be the blatant deficiency when it comes to a holding midfielder and a first choice left winger. If Hargreaves is fit then fine, i love him, we dont need to sign a holding midfielder, i want curly hair too, and if i was married he could tool my wife. But if not we need one, and an excellent one. We should’ve bought Diarra, but we fudged that one. I’d eat a shitty cock if we could sign Flamini but we aint that lucky, so maybe it’s time we stopped giving Fletch such a hard time. He may be ugly as sin, but that boy loves this club and I’d play him over the i-hope-no-one-notices-i-disappear-in-big-games-and-cant-dictate-play Carrick anyday. And unless we spend money on a left winger we may be shafted. Park is shit, i cant dress it up any other way. Nani might prove us wrong, but i’m not sure. And Tosic needs time. Personally, i’m amazed Diego Capel isnt house hunting in Manchester as we speak. But i’m no transfer guru, just a guy with too much time and lots of sports channels.

So in summary we need to get over everything that Micheal Owen has previously stood for (the dippers, that mob, and general smug c*nt, my shit doesnt stink behaviour) and realise he’s an excellent pro, a free transfer who will probably be on squad player wages, a genuine goal threat, a poacher like we havent seen at the club since Ruud sold his soul, and a player who will not only be absolutely ecstatic to of joined us (and therefore probably wont cry off to Kia if he’s on the bench 2 games in a row), but one who, when he’s fully fit and firing, is probably in the top 5 natural goal scorers currently playing the game. Yeah, we all wanna see the money that twat went for spent, but aside from the two outstanding candidates to sign up front (Benzema and Huntelaar, i discount Villa on the basis of that ridiculous facial hair) Owen is pretty much as good a option as anyone. Infact, i’ve got 20 quid that says he will score at least 1 goal for every 2 starts should he sign, if anyone fancies it?

Oh yeah, and while i’m having a rant, lets gid rid of some of the youth players that we all know are never gonna make it at this club no matter how promising they are. Campbell, Wellbeck, Possebon, Gibson – i’m looking at you. And lets get Ljajic in now, he’s gonna be sexual. And get Petrucci up in the seniors as well.

I’d like to point out that if Owen doesnt come, i’m a c*nt and shall never show my face round these parts again. Good day.

  171. inmoscowwemadeit3 says:

while i was critical over valencia and the amount we paid , this deal is could be a real coup. Also classic Fergie a deal similar to the Henrik Larsson loan its a win – win situation with experience coming in and someone who at international level formed a very good partnership with Wayne Rooney back in 2006.

  172. Puncher says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Owen can fuck off I don´t won´t to see him at OT…

Fuck of Glazer Owen you scouse bastard….

  173. Henkenbenken says:

    NO NO NO NO.

What the hell are fergie thinking? Which Utd supporter whould get to like this shitthead even if he scores for the club. Not only does he stinks, he is a moneygrabbing whore and a former Liverpool hero.

This summer is rubbish. I am * disappointed. We have prob. £100mp or more to shop with, and we strengthen our squad with OWEN?!?!? It’s like… Even City tries to purchase better and bitter names/players then this

Liverpool and CFC fans must be having a laugh.

  174. Bestie says:

Allright lads, I know hes an ex Liverpool player but our options are a little short at the moment. Perhaps its not all bad if he comes on a free and signs a short term performance related deal the risks are minimal. You never know if he gets fit (I know thats a big if!) with the players he has around him at United he could do a job.

  175. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    he’s old
he’s alot slower than he used to be due to injury
he ,after a big injury, became very injury prone
but he was a one shot needed
    one goal scored player
and his name was henrik larsson
    so who knows about owen

  176. Jack says:

@ChineseElvis, take it you never watched him play a game then..?
    @ john, past it? hahahahahaha

  177. Liverpool One says:

Michael Owen you little fucking whore!

I’ve stuck up for and defended you when those around me were getting on your back…but not anymore. How dare you? You little prick!

Could you imagine David Beckham signing for Liverpool on a free transfer? No, I wouldn’t have throught so!

Because even if Beckham saw a move to Liverpool as a way to salvage his dying England careerI would hope that he couldn’t even contemplate it because of his deep rooted Utd past.

I just hope you fucking fail your bloody medical later today and the fucking Mancs tell you to piss off back to your stables.

I won’t work out son, it didn’t work for Paul Ince and it won’t work for you either, you’ll just end up being hated on both sides of the M62.

  178. RedHarry4Life says:

    For God sake Michael Owen!!!!!!!

And maybe Fabiano. F ck, F-ck, FUCK!!!!!! We are shopping in the bargain basement and 2nd rate striker market.

Yes I know all about Owen’s record and yes I agree he could be a shrewd wonderful signing if we have him on a basic wage/pay as you play. But god does it make you excited, look forward to the season. No!!!!

Fabiano – average sort of hit and miss player, Scores plays well in onwe game and is then shit the next game. Does anyone think that in truly big games next season that either of these 2 twats could do a flash oif brilliance to win it for us? Maybe but I don’t think so.

Why do so call big names don’t want to come to United? Tell you why. They see Real turds go and buy our best player. The WFPOY and these players look and say they aren’t a big club they sell their best players, what chance have they next year, they will lose to Real Turds and Barca beat them easy with CR7 and now they don’t even have CR7 anymore and t6hey have replaced them with Owen (and maybe Fabiano). They are losing some of their best players and who is left? Rooney and ……………………………………………..a good defence.

  179. Duncan says:

Owen will be a success at United, believe me, believe Fergie.

  180. DanS says:

    @davetian love your rant mate

  181. andy says:

Have to say I won’t be unhappy if Owen arrives – he has to worth a punt, certainly as a squad/impact player. Of course his fitness is a concern, but I reckon a lot of the propblems were in his head. Put him at a club like Utd and he’s back in the spotlight and he’ll have a few points to prove. He’s a natural goalscorer and will get all the service he needs. Trust Fergie, he’s no fool and if he thinks it best for the club then he’ll sign him.
I work with a few scousers and they’re absolutely gutted that we may get him, as they desperately wanted him back coz they know he’s a natural goalscorer. How good to see him score against that lot!

  182. gotta hate tiny tears says:

Michael Owen IS HAVING A MEDICAL TODAY WITH UNITED
    ITS HAPPENING

  183. gotta hate tiny tears says:

08.40 Sky Sports News understands that Michael Owen underwent an initial examination on his knee on Thursday and will undergo a full medical later today before completing his surprise free transfer switch to Manchester United.

  184. gotta hate tiny tears says:

Chelsea ‘completely rejecting’ an audacious offer from Manchester City to take England captain John Terry to Eastlands.
SEE TEVEZ IF YOUR A UNITED FAN YOU DONT GO TO CITY

  185. Gary says:

This transfer doesn’t fill me with a great deal of excitement. What kind of reaction is Owen going to get when he runs out at Old Trafford for the first time? I imagine everyone will be looking at eachother as what to do?

Looking at it tho, it’s a no lose situation if we can get him on a pay as you play contract and on a free transfer.

  186. Gary says:

I have to say I’m very concerned about this season. We are seriously lacking goals and creativity from midfield, and Rooney is our only top class front man and he isnt a natural goal scorer anyway.

Dimitar Berbatov is under extreme pressure to actually produce some performances for a change or some just some goals for a change!

  187. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    Gary
What kind of reaction is Owen going to get when scores against liverpool at Old Trafford
What kind of reaction is Owen at Old Trafford if he’s a success and you can hold that aswell over sherrars head cause they guy never gave owen a chance
owen was 100% fit for the end of last season
    as well as rooney
and was out injuried twice last season with a recuring injury
    same as rooney
and eveyone is saying with ronaldo gone rooney can play upfront like he does for england
score loads like he does for england
run a muck like he does for england
who is rooneys best partnership in his england carrer
I dont know about this signing but i am 100% behind it because i believe in sir alex ferguson

  188. Sash Sylvarre says:

    I don’t like this. I don’t like Owen.

But if Sir Alex thinks it’s good, I’m willing to place my faith on his judgment once again.

  189. spanky says:

does anyone know an owen chant
still waiting on a valencia one

  190. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    as for valencia
she knows one a few days now but there wont be any more videos till she’s in her new kit

  191. reyals says:

    @davetian

    lo…that was a good read.

  192. Rite$h says:

Oh no not another Saha! This dude remains injured most of the season, and to make things worst he’s an ex-scouser. Compared to this better we got Saha back on the same pay-as-you-play basis :)
On a serious note SAF should move for Rossi, bring the lad back, and move for alexis sanchez + silva

  193. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    Rite$h
rossi is in the middle of signing a 5 year contract extension

  194. Tufty says:

You cant argue at this signing, Owen hasnt cost a fee, will be on a wage deal that means he has to score goals, he has experience at this level and lives within a short car journey of Old Trafford.
Owen has everything to prove and wants to get back in the England team.
His experience will help the likes of Macheda and Wellbeck and even Rooney.

His presence of the Far East tour will pay for his wages.
He will get more goals coming from the bench than Tevez.

I dont expect Owen to be the only signing before the end of August.

Fergie been tracking Owen for a while and he only went to Newcastle ahead of Utd as Newcastle had screwed Rael Madrid over the sale of woodgate.

  195. JimJones says:

Football365 mention this blog in their article which gives reasons why signing Owen is a good thing. I’d prefer Luis Fabiano myself but Owen on a free can’t be that bad of a signing.

  196. AIG Alex is GOD says:

Believe fergie he will be a success and not the last signing for sure

gotta hate tiny tears u r right and milan and juve are intrested in rossi

  197. AIG Alex is GOD says:

spot on jimjones for free whatever owen gets is a bonus

  198. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    AIG Alex is GOD

    henrik larsson

  199. jonathan Edwards says:

I am missing Tevez even more now. What the hell is all this talk that Utd are interested in Owen. I hated the player when he was at Liverpool as i know most reds did. I will never forget a challenge that Michael Owen once made on Ronny Johnsen in the 97/98 season it was dreadful and i will always hate him for that. We were there and the tackle was that wreckless that it could of ended Ronny Johnsen’s career. It was up there with the challenge that Pogotetz made on Possebon in a Utd Vs Boro game in the carling cup. I will never take to Michael Owen. Bring back Alan Smith. If we are going to sign a player from the relegated geordie side then i would sooner have smudge back.

  200. jespermoses says:

Its not down to the fact that hes ‘worth a punt’.The guys a fucking knobjockey who dosen’t belong at United, plain and simple.

I just can’t get my head around it…..this ,if it goes through will be THE most fucked up transfer of the decade.

  201. Tufty says:

    Why would you prefer Fabiano?
    Both players are 29.
One will cost £20 million and one is free.
One has scored over 400 goals in the prem league, one has scored none.

    Would rather take Owen.

  202. Neil says:

some websites saying that Fergie will sign more after wrapping Owen up….names mentioned as under consideration are Aguero and Fabiano….no clue how believable it is….though if he is going for one of them, I hope its Aguero

  203. Howie says:

well … he is FREE .. and if SAF can offer him like a 1-2 year contract, I think he will sit well as a 3rd choice striker.

Think about it, would 20 or 30 million player want to be a third choice striker ?

I think MU need to sign a midfield player, a playmaker .. and a goalkeeper perhaps.

  204. CraigB says:

As soon as Owen puts on the shirt, he is a red devil. Even if you did not like him before, he becomes one of us as soon as that shirt goes on. So start saying the name, because he is part of us now…..Go M.O.

  205. Howie says:

and I hope he can pass the medical test …. lol

  206. mikeyg2310 says:

Just seen on Sky Sports News that he has played over 30 games for the last 2 seasons. It may not be as big a risk as is being made out, and as CraigB said once he wears that shirt he is a Unitd player and the past becomes the past (unless he is a failure and leaves, he will then be a FSB again)

  207. PG says:

In a twisted way – will this be the year that Michael Owen helps Liverpool win the title ?

  208. RedHarry4Life says:

Owen – god thats strange. I don’t I will be able tro chant his name next year. But what does make me smile is the fact thats its another one in the Scouse bastards eye. Even if he never plays for us. What would make it a priceless/wonderous signing is if he scored the winner at anusfield next season. Now that would be priceless!

If SAF thinks its a good deal then it is, end of. But please Fergie get someone in that will fire our imaginations. Don’t know about you but Owen and Fabiano just don’t make me dream/look forward to next season with anticipation.

  209. trevor says:

we need an experienced striker to help out, what better to get one on a free transfer on a pay as you play deal!

If it doesnt work out we could sell him for a couple of mil in 2 years time and get back most of his wages!!!

  210. cherry says:

I really dont knw what to make of this new…well..SAF knows what is right

  211. CraigB says:

Im just looking at some of the twat comments on pool supporters’ site. They really sound uneducated. Hardly two words can be written without some sort of swear words or abrev. No wonder Owen left. Would you want a bunch of tossers who cant speak english singing your name? Dont worry M.O, utd fans can sing…..SING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  212. Farhan Borst says:

What if he bags loads of goals for United next season? Will our fans sing his name?

  213. Swissdevil says:

    another statement of a scouser:

“Buy him that would be great…

He left in 2004 and in 2005 we’ve won the champions league.

You know what I mean…. The 19th is coming to Merseyside nxt season..”

    i hate scousers…pls not owen @ ot!!!

  214. Sean says:

Anusfield…I think its hilarious. A guy who couldnt get in a relegated Newcastle side is now good enough for you. As for ‘one in teh Scousers eye’ fuck me you lose Tevez and Ronaldo and sign owen. I couldnt be happier. Saha is a better bet and you let him go!

  215. RedMist says:

    Why oh why oh why…..????!!!???

Is this bindipping cunt the best we can do?

Sell the best player in the world and Tevez and replace them with an unproven winger and an over the hill money grabbing scouse cunt, who is made of even more fragile glass than Louis Saha.

    ffs.

  216. Owen Forever says:

why not Owen??!!!!Owen is still one of the best footballers in the world!!Why can u refuse him???That’s what i couldnt bare!!!Are u crazy??!!Think that one day Owen helps u win a Champion,u will not refuse him!!!

I couldnt bare what u say!!!!!Think it over then comment!

  217. SSS says:

Pay all 100m on Newcastle manager Shearer and tell him to play as the striker

  222. Chris20LEGEND says:

why not? just cause he played for the scum, get over yourself scott, why pay 25 million for a sub striker (tevez) when you can get one for free, all for it and have been since newcastle went down

  223. FusilliJerry says:

Anyone understand how the Europa Leaguer works ? We’ll need to know for 2010-2011.

  224. theboogeyman says:

    I’m sorry,but please fuck off,FusilliJerry.
    PS:I don’t like swearing.

  225. King Eric says:

Chill out FusilliJerry. Ye of little faith!

Fucking belting post Davetian, not sure about your views on Wellbeck, Macheda, Gibson etc.

  226. FusilliJerry says:

Boogeyman – I don’t know about you but for me football is emotional, and I was expressing my emotions at this time. If you can’t handle that – if you don’t think anyone should express an opinion – I suggest you would be happier on 606, because I’ve always thought ROM operated at a higher level where dissent and debate were actually welcome and not the reason for a Tiananmen Square clampdown from the likes of you.

  227. CraigB says:

AND FusilliJerry COMES BACK SWINGIING. THE CROWD WAITS FOR theboogeyman TO JUMP OUT THE CLOSET ON THIS ONE. SCARY!!!! LMAO…

  228. theboogeyman says:

And I was expressing mine.Europa League??Surely you have more faith in Sir Alex than that??

    @CraigB:lol

  229. theboogeyman says:

And you telling me to go to 606 is not the same as what I said to do??

I am ending this now because I don’t want to fight, even if it is just with words.

I apologize for what I said and hope you will do the same.

  230. Axeman says:

Why is everyone acting so psycho.. just coz we were targeting Benzema & didnt get him, you dont need to flip out so much. View the signing in context of the team.. Berbatov & Rooney first choice forwards. Kiko & Wellbeck young kids almost ready to step up.. who do we need? A good back up striker who wont bitch & moan about getting enough game time.

If Benzema had come then again we would have 3 first choice strikers with place on the field for only 2. We needed an experienced back up, and though I would have preferred RVN I think Owen can do the job for us.. plus he isnt costing us a transfer fee so we arent losing anything.

Don’t lose sleep over not signing Galacticos, that isn’t the United way anyway. We make stars, only in rare cases do we buy them. There is still plenty of time left in the transfer window.. In Sir Alex we trust!

  231. PabloTM says:

Calm Down you lot.. you think the acquisition of Owen is the end of the World.

He has more talent in his Shinpads than the Argie Mercenary, will score 20 times more goals than him..

Good riddance to Tevez… welcome in Owen

Okay so we have not spent any of the Ronaldo money yet… who would u lot buy?

Fabiano perhaps?, Aguero.. 55 million for a relatively unknown… cop on

Some of you giving back your season tickets because SAF is taking a gamble well send them on if you dont want them!!

Owen coming in might also help the younger strikers at the club, the Machedas of this world could learn from him.

  232. Swissdevil says:

let’s buy owen, give him a place in the stands and just play him against the bindippers… ;-)

  233. ASH says:

i know this is not the best signings but its for free its no harm. but fergi shouldnt stop here he has to huntelaar or fabiano then it will be ok. think if the gamble pays off and owen scores 15-20 goals next season it will be a bonus. but fergi needs to sign huntelaar.
man u 3 liverfool 0 ( owen scores hatrick or even a goal against them)
    long live man u

  234. Swissdevil says:

@ASH: after last season its getting time for beating the shit out of the scouser-scum! but if owen will become man of the match..hm..
totally agree that we need either JKH or Aguero!

  235. jamos9 says:

One of the all time classic posts there Davetian and I agreed with pretty much all of it..Good work fella!!

  236. davetian says:

Cheers DanS and reyals, i actually expected to come back on to a barrage of abuse. I’m just sick of these fairweather, cock sucking fans that unfortunately see a headline saying God No, Not Micheal Owen and follow it just like that Fast Show character who agreed with everything people said at him, with quite often comical results.

And i’m sick of the fans who believe that the summer transfer window is essentially Champ Manager come real. I dont like Real Madrid, i can barely find something about them i like, but the simple fact is that they have some sort of magical draw on players that no other club can compare with. Much like in the way you or i would rather go to a pub with the teenage barmaid with massive tits, thighs that could roll cigars and a penchant for blowing customers who say keep the change, rather than the shit-stained landlords wife who reminds us of Olive from on the buses. They also have a council retarded enough to bail them out of the shit, so good luck to them. But we dont, we have a leprechaun and his brain washed, GM sons. So we have to live with that. We signed a top class winger for a big fee, and we’re about to sign a player who, if we can get the best out of him, will be fantastic for our squad. I support Man United, not other peoples opinions, and i want whats best for the club, and i believe signing MO is one of the best things that the club could do. I said it months ago to anyone bored enough to listen to me, and now it proves that i’m right, so i deserve to be a smug c*unt about it. I swear, some of the Brokeback Mountain fans that come on here would seriously have you believe that we are perfectly capable of signing every player in the world we want, and thats so misguided. Some c*nt even complained about the Fabiano reports (since when has signing Brazils number nine EVER been a bad thing?). yeah, e lost out on Benzema, but such is life. If Owen wants to play for us and he accepts the pecking order than magic, get the litle twat in. I wont sit here claiming a shopping list of Kaka, Eto’o, Messi, Torres, Ronaldinho and Iniesta should be brought in, thats bullshit and aint happening. The people i mention (Capel, Benzema, Huntelaar) are genuine targets that we could get.

My only reservation is if the gaffer trys to fit all 3 players in the first team, which will inevitably result in our Wayne being shunted out wide again which i want less than pretty much anything. If that aint gonna happen, get Owen in and it’ll be sound.

  237. davetian says:

Cheers Jamos9, i’m hoping Scott gives me a job and my own column. I reckon i fucking deserve it. Maybe we can get a petition going?

  238. Alex Craig says:

People on here do make me chuckle, its so good for a laugh.

Anyone that thinks Frazier Campbell has got a future at Old Trafford is a complete plank, seriously he has nothing to offer and getting anything like £5 million for him is a great sale.

Welbeck and Macheda still have a few years to go yet so although hes a dirty scouse we need to bring someone in and he may do the business he may not but its pretty much a free gamble so please stop moaning.

Madrid have fucked the market but thats life.

Long live King Fergie he knows what hes doing and anyone who disagrees with the Godfather is a muppet. Have a good weekend.

  239. Swissdevil says:

    OWN COLUMN for DAVETIAN!!

  240. RedJA says:

I have mixed feelings about it but It could end up being a stroke of genius, Owen wants to go to the World Cup and the only way he’ll do that is by scoring goals, plus if it doesn’t work out it hasn’t cost £30 million.

I think the reason we’re struggling to attract the ‘big names’ from europe is the same reason Chelski, Pool, Arsenal and Citeh haven’t made any big foreign signings yet, 50% tax and weak sterling vs the euro, players earn more on the continent and any that do come will be on crazy money. It’s also partly why the transfer fees have gone crazy. Most of the signings in this country so far have been domestic and it wouldn’t surprise me if it stayed that way.

  241. King Eric says:

Why oh Why Aguero? He is close to fifty million and another Argie. Not worth the risk.

  242. King Eric says:

Another quality post Davetian, keep em coming.

Denton Davey will also be happy with this news. He has been lauding Owen for weeks.

  243. KVN says:

I am shocked by this signing. I’ll be honest, when it comes to signing players SAF generally get’s it right. HOWEVER, he is not always right eg David Bellion, Laurent Blannc, Djemba Djemba, Bosnick, Masimo Tiabi (the gk).

And based on the evidence so far Michael Owen will join this group. The simple reason is that
a – he is far more injury prone than ever before
b – he has lost his acceleration to get away from defenders
c – his game is limited
d – i can’t see what he’ll add to United way of playing

this is not the Michael Owen of the world cup in 98. he doesn’t frighten defenders anymore. nor does he go past players like he used to with ease.
yes michael owen WAS a good player, but not anymore. Yes he’s experienced, but I haven’t seen him add anything to his game, the way that Andrew Cole did when he came to Old Trafford or how Fletcher has developed as a player. Or even how CR7 did when he was with us – from one trick poney to FIFA world player of the year in 6 years.

Michael Owen’s pinnacle came when he won the prestigious Ballon D’or for best player in Europe.

I think that despite the transfer setbacks with Benzema, loosing CR7 and Tevez, there is still time to get QUALITY players in. Especially the midfield area where we need creativity and defensively intelligent midfield player.

yes, Owen will score goals for Man United, but I’m thinking that the season seems one where we may not retain our title or make any real progress in the European Champions League. which would be a real shame.

the only plus side from Owen’s perspective is that
a – he wants to get into the England team and play in the world cup
b – means that every game he plays he’ll want to play well
c – score goals and get noticed for the right reasons

    Owen prove me wrong.

  244. North Stand Tier 2 says:

Why is everyone getting so pissed off?? Why would you want someone like Luis Fabiano to come in when you know he’s a miserable cock. Aguero we’d have to pay through the nose, transfer and wages, and he’ll only fuck us over. Villa isn’t interested in coming to UK. Eto’o we’d have to pay £250k a week. Forlan we dont want. Ribery is over priced and over rated. Gignac is wank. Benzema was the only exciting and realistic target, but he wanted to go to Madrid (he always said that). Does nobody else realise that there is a shortage of top class forwards in the world right now?? Owen is a Teddy Sheringham type move. As long as he’s on the right contract, I think its a decent signing.

Fuck it, Rooney and Berba through the middle. Macheda and Owen as back up. Valencia out wide.

I’d like to see Ashley Young or Sanchez from Udinese on the left, and possibly Cahill from Everton. Arrives late in the box and is strong in the air, defo get 15 goals a season. Only concern is paying over the odds for a what 26-28 yr old (no idea how old he is).

Got to remember, just cos we have £80m in the bank, doesn’t mean we need to piss it away on players we don’t really want just to appease fans.

Oh how we are all chuckling over there on the blue site, keep it up trafford red sox, lose tevez and ronaldo get Valencia and Owen ,I can see the comparisons…………Lol

One bad performance against Barca -and the club goes into panic mode. As things stand -hope I’m wrong -but we are looking at 3rd place next season. Why did we not go for Silva as a wise player -he’s not Ronaldo but he’s Galactico class -whereas it seems Valencia can just “do a job” as a wide player.

The only positive is on the financial side. The Glazers have burdened us -but while they stay -that debt has to be paid off -and at least a slice of it will be this year.

  249. manc4life says:

Hope the bastard never plays for us, he has betrayed every club he has ever played for, Capello has seen through him and hopefully fergie will get rid of him by Christmas, we get rid of our 2 best players and end up with this scouse reject, (he must be bad when they didn’t try and get him back)

    @18:46 :

Veron? Djemba Djemba? Kleberson? Forlan? Just to name a few costly mistakes.

  251. william says:

If Ruud is willing to have a limited role then pay 1.5 Million and sign him. He is still deadly in the box and would provide size.

  252. chris says:

well now that he’s in a team with decent service, there’s every chance he could succeed. and if he doesn’t, utd don’t lose much. and plus, there’s going to be another big signing coming so dont worry too much yet.
