Hargreaves: Roll On Next Season

At the weekend, Owen Hargreaves made his first appearance for the first team since September 2008. Whilst he was only on for a few seconds, he is happy to have made his return and hopes to get some more playing time this weekend against Stoke.

“I’ve missed two seasons and I’m disappointed about that,” said Hargreaves. “But I’m 29 and hopefully I’ve got another six to eight years left in me. Being out for so long is obviously not something I would have envisaged myself going through. It’s been a learning experience and I try and take the positives from it. It was short but obviously I’m looking forward to next season. We’ve got our last game this weekend and hopefully I’ll play a bit again, and then hopefully get ready to attack next season.”

  1. yooney says:

    We missed you too hargo

  2. Xeno says:

Missed him badly this year, especially in Europe.

  3. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    Our new midfield signing

i hear he’s good ,looking forward to seeing what he can do next year for united

but on the sunderland match what a header by hargreaves , world class

  4. mhihrh says:

Its still a mystrey whether he has fully recovered from the discomfort that led him to having that knee surgery. I heard a few months back he still has to take injections and has the occasional niggle. If he still cant play regularly we should just use him in the big games like in his first season. His versatility is an asset too.

  5. admanutd says:

one of my favourite players at united.. hope he does reallly mwell next season.. i’ll be keeping my fingers crossed hoping he doesnt get injured again..
if he does get a long term injury it’ll be really sad and also it might mean the end of the road at united for him.

  6. zain man red says:

good 2 c hargo back out of topic silva is really flirting with united fergie sign him up before the fascist pop up

  7. Colbert says:

One of my very favourite players at United. He has huge potential when fit. Awesome in 07/08 and hopefully he can play 25-35 games next season and I’ll be very happy.

But what’s with the beard Hargo? You look like a bum now:p

  8. denton davey says:

Why no mention of two new knees ?

This guy would be better than a new signing ! If – and it’s a huge question-mark – he is finally recovering his fitness and confidence then he/Fletcherinho will form a fantastic duo in the middle of the park.

BUT – much as people hate to hear it – apart from its nomenclature, what’s the difference between the formation that UTD seem to be using and the one that RafaelBeneathUs employs with two sitting midfielders (or whatever you call those guys ?). It would seem that the 4-4-2 is dead as a door knocker but lots of people still cling to the now-romantic notion that it’s the norm; it’s not.

Assuming that Hargreaves can return to full fitness and that Anderson can too, then the big “hole” in UTD’s team is the middle-man in the 4-3-3 (or 4-2-3-1, depending on what you call it). Perhaps Anderson can be that guy, perhaps – surprise to those who write me off as a dyed-in-the-wood, BerbaSceptic – there might be a way to make use of Dimmy’s sublime skills in this position. Or, maybe it’s where Nani will end up since he is now showing off a new, more mature composure and no one can question his talent/skill.

Strange – isn’t it ? – that the return of Owen Hargreaves could be so pivotal. I suppose that even Michael Carrick’s UTD-career might a new lease on life.

  9. Redrose says:

Hargo can keep fit while doing his day job – starring in the tv series “Numbers”, under his pseudonym David Krumholtz.
    He’s got curly hair too.

  10. Costas says:

He got the loudest pop at the Stadium of Light despite the fact that there were only 1000+ United fans in there. I hope he will play a bit this Sunday!

  11. Antipod says:

C`mon Hargry, we need you !
have a hell of a summer and get back 100% ready

  12. Marq says:

Lets start with playing for more than 2 mins the next game shall we? =)

  13. bchilds says:

Hopefully he has a good pre-season and is able to feature on a regular basis next term.

  14. Xyth says:

It will be like a new signing! We surely mist him this season.

  15. DEVILisRED says:

poor chap to have gone through the terrible injury ordeal. agreed he’ll be like a new signing for us next season. Welcome back curly hair.

  16. trevor says:

Over the past couple of years i have been conciderably dissapointed in the way some of our fans reacted to Hargreaves and his Injury.

Some were hammering Fergie for signing him, some were labeling Hargreaves a waste of Money, Wanting him to Retire. … Just a bit disapointing really.

With regards to Hargreaves he will offer us quite a lot in comparison to Carrick whom i think will be bit part next season. He jus hasnt managed to step up to the plate and take his chance! Scholes will be bit part next season so someone of the combativness of Hargreaves & also goal threat from set peices will be gladly welcomed!

Lads lets all remember that when players are out injured for conciderable time their first few months is often hampered with other injuries & Strains as their bodies get back into shape.. No matter how much training you do in the gym it takes matches to get to where they need to be!

Some fans have forgotten just how good hargreaves is, i just cant wait! on saturday i hope he gets at least 20 mins!

  17. trevor says:

Also forgot to add…… if the title hadnt of been going down to the last game, he would have played a couple of matches.!!

Bit irrelevant i know, but some people dont take this into concideration and just blame the fact he isnt playing to him still being injured!!

  18. trevor says:

    @Gotta hate tiny tears

Hargreaves produced the move of the match with that header, i beleive ROoney was waiting 2 years for that flick on! HAHAHA

  19. trevor says:

    Question to everyone!!

Did fergie hold hargreaves back from playing much in the last month or 2 in order to ensure he doesnt go to the world cup?

I honestly think so, i think fergie wants hargreaves to have a bit of rest and get ready for united with a good pre season!

Remember ferige will do what ever is right for Manchester United, Not the player or their country!

  20. trevor says:

    Back to work!! hahaha

  21. willierednut says:

I was surprised the boss didn’t bring Hargo on, instead of Rio on Sunday, still big doubts over his long term future, but a big bonus, if he comes back next season and plays 20 plus games.

  22. trevor says:

There always will be doubts due to the injury he had, I have simular doubts with Rio!

I know magrath couldnt train evry week simularly with leadley King, I dont see this as an option for united! We need consistancy at the back. you can swap midfielders but no club has the luxury of doing this with the Back four, it just doesnt work! In my opinion!

  23. 20legend99 says:

In case someone hasn’t seen it yet, certainly worth a laugh.

  24. Gudjohnsen says:

Hahaha yeah it was a world class header by Hargreaves.

But with all joking aside, I’m really happy for Hargo. He’ll be a big boost for our midfield next season. Can’t wait to see him in action. And now we finally got our free kick and corner taker. His set pieces are excellent.

  25. Schmuck says:

our new signing, he’s a CASTAWAY ! hahah

  26. elvido says:

@trevor, you may not be far from the truth, it certainly sounds like Hargo was held back for the last two months!! I think we are preparing for Rio’s iffy physiology. Evans, Brown, OShea and Smalling should provide enough depth.

  27. Peter says:

Looking forward to showing our boys on how to take a free kick.

  28. Marq says:

Our medical team have always had problems bringing people back to full fitness after bad injury spells. Neville took years to be back playing, Solskjear disappeared quite a while, Brown also had a long time out, as with Saha. And now its Hargreaves. I’m not sure it is the problem with our medical team or the player themselves…..

  29. MG says:

We love to have you back man

Get the tissues out it’s emotional : )

  30. redscot says:

Possibly I think a little too deep into these issues,I hope its not a little smokescreen to passify the fans that “our new signing” some Wino looking character has solved our midfield problem of an attacking threat. What I am suggesting yes welcome back of course, but lets not use this an excuse for not to spend in the Summer and deal with that Issue, over to you Mr Glazer.

  31. andykong says:

really really pleased to see him back and it was encouraging to see him on the pitch and the reception we gave him. hope he gets a few more minutes on sunday then dominates next season :)

glad i can wear my no 4 shirt with pride and no longer feel like its a jinx :)

  32. possepossebon says:

I pinched myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming when he came on as a sub.

  33. ManCanChestHair says:

  34. Sam says:

Seeing him back is my championship this year

  35. Yaman says:

Welcom back hargry,it has really been a tough season 4 united bt we hope u can put some changes in to thd midfield especially in the defencive midfield.
