Ander Herrera has enjoyed a fantastic season for Manchester United after Jose Mourinho has given the Spanish midfielder a new lease of life. Herrera was named Sir Matt Busby player of the year after putting in consistently good performances for United this season, as well as his brilliant performances in the big games.

It’s no surprise that other managers would be interested in signing him as a result. Ernesto Valverde, the new Barcelona manager, is reportedly keen to bring Herrera back to Spain. Valverde worked with Herrera for two years at Athletic Bilbao before the midfielder left for United.

However, reports today claim that Herrera has no intention of joining Spanish giants Barcelona as he sees his long-term future at United.

Herrera’s current deal has just one year remaining, with the option of a further 12 months, but United are reportedly keen to extend his contract over the summer.

It’s usually as this stage that stories appear in the papers, leaked by the players agent, that the player could be tempted to leave. Putting pressure on the club with speculated interest from elsewhere is often used as a way of getting more money in their player’s contract, yet Herrera’s loyalty to the club means he has no intention of playing games.

While Herrera may claim he shouldn’t be captain, it would be hard to find a United fan who would agree with him.
