After a few good weeks for Jesse Lingard, including Manchester United’s opening goal against West Brom last weekend, Louis van Gaal was quick to dismiss the likelihood of an England call up for the youngster.
I would say it is much too early. We have to wait to see if he is consistent because he is more or less the same age as Memphis Depay. We have to wait but I am very happy with his contribution up until now.
However, following Michael Carrick’s injury, Roy Hodgson has brought Lingard in to the England squad to face France at Wembley.
Lingard has played just 193 minutes of Premer League football, but took to Instagram to celebrate the call up.
“Delighted to be called up to the England senior squad. It’s always an honour to wear the shirt.”
