Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for a second yellow card at Wastelands on Sunday after deliberately handling the ball in the box. It was clear Ronaldo thought he had heard a whistle as he patted the ball down to the ground, rather than instinctively going for goal.
Howard Webb didn’t see it that way though and send Ronaldo off. FIFA rules state that a yellow card should only be handed out if the referee deems the player guilty of unsporting behaviour, for example, when a player deliberately and blatantly handles the ball to prevent an opponent gaining possession or attempts to score a goal by deliberately handling the ball. Clearly, Ronaldo was guilty of neither, yet Webb made the moronic decision to dish out a second yellow and send him packing.
Ronaldo has today cleared up his reason for handballing, explaining that he thought Micah Richards had been fouled. Fortunately, Ronaldo will only miss our Carling Cup game against Blackburn.
“Rooney took the corner, I jumped and that was when I heard a shout from Richards and simultaneously the sound of a whistle,” said Ronaldo. “I was convinced that the ref had blown for a foul. I stopped trying to head the ball and score a goal. I grabbed the ball so Richards could get help. It never entered my mind that the referee would show me another yellow card because, for me, I hadn’t done anything wrong. To the contrary, after Richards yelled I thought he was hurt and needed assistance.”

I want to start this by saying I am a die hard United fan and will support Ronaldo as long as he wears the red of United. But he is an idiot. I would respect him a lot more if he answered honestly, I f***ed up, no more no less. Im human, I make mistakes sometimes, I disagree with the call I thought I heard a whistle I was wrong. Instead of blaming the referee for his actions. He will miss the Spurs match up next weekend, with a one game suspension.
Ronaldo, love him or hate him, is a character. A character like T.O. is for the NFL in the U.S. Great for publicity sake, great to keep your team and himself in the news, but not always the best for your team. He hasn’t hurt the locker room yet like T.O. but his attitude is hurting his image and therefore that of United’s. He blames anyone else he can think of instead of admitting I made a mistake, plan and simple. He would not have been sent off if he had decided not to clap at the ref. after his first yellow card. You can not expect after yelling at the ref. all game and publicly humiliating him, that he is going to act with 100% objectivity, I know I would not.
With that said I think Ronaldo’s treatment is unfair at times but sometimes he brings it upon himself. He needs to just get on with the game. He can not change the fact refs don’t seem to like him or respect him and he can not stop players fouling him because they can not keep up with his skill. He needs to just play and forget about the rest.
We can be upset that its unfair and Terry does worse things, but the buck stops with him. If he would stop acting like a 5 year old who got his lollipop taking away every time things go against him, he might receive more respect from players and referees alike. With that said I can not say for certain I would act differently if each day, i got my legs chopped down when I attempted to do anything and no one protected me, I might act like a 5 year old too. Its a two way street, I think he needs to control his own side, and try and put the other side out of his mind.
