This time last year, it seemed almost inevitable that Nemanja Vidic was going to leave Manchester United. Whilst the player had repeatedly claimed he was going to see out his contract, his agent seemed less certain.

However, out of the blue, Vidic went on to sign a new four year deal with the club and was named captain for the 2010-2011 season.

Silvano Martina has today reaffirmed Vidic’s commitment to the club, revealing a conversation he had with him over the possibility of moving elsewhere.

“Vidic is a player that everyone wants,” he told Radio Sportiva. “I talked to him about a hypothetical transfer and he said ‘I am the captain of Manchester United, I’ve won almost everything. ‘Why should I go to Italy right now that Italian football is going through such a turbulent moment?’. This response removes any doubt about his future – he stays where he is.”
