Former Manchester United full-back, Denis Irwin, has claimed that Antonio Valencia is a great signing for the club, thanks to the winger’s great pace and work ethic.
“He’s very direct, you can tell he’s a worker and he’s got great pace,” said Irwin. “He’s a good player and he gives us more options up front. I was very impressed with him in the two games I saw him play last season, especially at Old Trafford. I think he’ll be a great signing for us.”

Man Utd News 24/7

If a legend like Irwin says good things about the lad, then i’ll put my belief into him and wish him the best.
Posted this before but will put it again
10 reasons why valencia is a good signing:
1. He is 23
2. Played in the premier league for about 2/3 years
3. Good crosser
4. Tracks back
5. Good goal provider, will assist a lot, not selfish
6. 16 million is a good price for him
7. Can score
8. Shines in the ecuadorian national team
9. Not argentinian
10. Wants to play with us > chose us over RM
i hope we draw real next season and he scores ten
Just heard on sky sports that ronaldo scored 15 goals more than him last seaon but every other sTatic Valencia beat him crosses assits etc were better from a winger and get this he tracks back
Fze123. Your no.10 is perhaps the most important. It means he has a brain and that he will bleed Manchester United Red !!!
Gotta hate tiny tears. Those are some great stats. I was a little skeptical, but thinking it over, there is no doubt he is going to make us a better team.
Things we need:
-Crosses to our strikers and assists from our wings
-Goals/A number 9.
GHTT, if Sky is right, then we have our new right winger.
Wheeeeee, I’m happy we’ve signed *someone*. Aguero next?
Oh wait, Argentina.
Karim Benzema to try and be Cantona II? Number 7 and all.
The lad scored three goals last season. Thats my only concern. Every other aspect I reckon is quite good; pace, can dribble, can put in a good cross, great personality, but he has to step up his goal scoring though. Good Signing.
I’m very happy with this signing. I think Valencia will do great for us, I can see him being our assist king. I also think the price is fair considering we’re United, the transfer market is inflated at the moment so 16 mills is my idea of fair for this player.
If we would sign Benzema for 35-38 million pounds like the rumors state we still have 26-29 million punds left from the 80 mills we got for Ron.
@Eidur Gudjohnsen: Don’t we get it over 4 years or something, in like, 20m installments?
No we dont. Why in the world would Man Utd agree to 20M instalments over four years. We get it all once.
Dont worry about the goalscoring, coz he was in a wigan team, that defended for 80 percent of there season… where as with us… the majority of his game will actually be in the final third of the pitch, so he will get more chances, and if he is accurate then he will get more goals..
Listen, he dicked John Oshea twice last season… espec at OT… Oshea was on his arse all night coz of Valencia… so that shows that this lad aint scared of the big stage either..
Plus this will help Wazza and Berba 10 fold… coz… he is a winger, he creates, he isnt selfish, and is an excellent crosser…. and most of all he aint selfish and thinks of the team rather than his own benefit rather than Ronaldo..
I really think we could have a great team player on our hands here..
The 80m was to be paid all in one go, that was stipulated on agreeing the transfer… it was deposited yesterday… even though Ronaldo isnt officially a Real player until tomorrow, then he is being unveilled next monday… the Portugese Pansy.
FailsworthDevil
the money was put in with a freeze on it
its uniteds at 8 oclock tomorrow morning
are you listenin lyon
valencia reminds me a litle of porborsky
dribbling and pace, and crossing but goal scoring a little suspect
all in all though a relatively good buy fot the balance of the team and not just for his individual skills – a good fit to the team.
if we had not had ronaldo and just got valencia, we wouldnt be that worried and un-excited by valencia, the only reason most people think he may not be that fantastic is because people are comparing him to the “hole” ronaldo has left – lets be real anyone asked to fill that is more probably than not going to have an uphill battle to prove themselves
so lets give him a chance and see how it plays
besieds, we gave carrick a chance, we gave berbs a chance, evra too – lets be patient and see how valencia shines for the team. enough of individual egos for a while – the lad seems a little more level-headed and more a team player
MUCH rather have Antonio than Glen Johnson!!
God speed Antonio. Welcome to the family
All the Wigan fans I work with (and there are a few as I work Just outside of Wigan) have said under Fergie’s Guidance, Valencia will become world class.
They are actually excited about seeing his development under us and are so sure we will grow to love him. So I think we may have just signed another gem.
However we cannot stand still at this and let’s Not forget our rival’s are adding names Arsenal and Liverpool have both added and Chelsea will announce a stunning signing real soon. So we must move fast now to tie up Benzema. Never mind all this he wants Real, he may go to Wenger. We have the cash we have the position and we have the stage for this Lad Right now and if we welcome him he will repay his big fee, Ten fold!
Please Sir Alex lets get in Oh Ah Benzema United’s NEW No 7!
Denis Irwin gave me a tour around Old Trafford one Saturday morning. Surely he can’t be so hard up for cash that he needs the extra tenner it costs to have him show you about. He hadn’t much to say for himself but it was still enjoyable. He gladly took our twenty pound tip.
JimJones- it’s a known fact that Irwin is a tight bastard. As Roy Keane says he still has his confirmation money.
key words: WORK ETHIC. At times hard work can be more important than skill. example – neville, john oshea, park, etc.
I’ve been thinking…. Fze123′s list is spot on, there are not many negatives the only one being that as a lot of you have said his goal scoring is suspect. Everyone is looking for someone to replace ronaldo, but we have scores like rooney and berba (maybe benzema) that can put the ball in the net. As others have brilliantly pointed out, we have been lacking assists from the wings. I would be willing to bet that giggs had more assists last year than ronaldo even though he got less playing time. Also someone a couple of weeks ago showed a link of total shots for the team during the past season. Of roughly 250 shots during the season, ronaldo had about 115 (give or take). With better distribution from him and to him, valencia will shine at united: in SAF we trust.
he will probably increase his goal tally, maybe do 10-15 max a season, but will be the main goal provider. can’t wait to see him play in the red shirt.
For me, after the fact that he wanted to join us rather than RM, the most important fact is that he is a team player, tracks back and puts in his fair share of work..
As good as Ronnie was, I hated his defensive work ethic.. It just annoyed me so much to see him walking around, giving out to people for not being where he passed the ball, while Rooney was busting a gut to get back and defend.
Valencia always tracked back to help out his team… He’s going to be a good signing.
good signing I think, direct and pacy and was happy to work for his wage at Wigan. He adheres to the young player policy and will be hungry to prove himself. Add Valencia to the other young wingers Tosic and Nani as well as Giggs and Park. Our wings are sorted out. Valencia has proven himself at the premier league level and 16 million, while a bit ‘toppy’, is not a complete mugging. The key thing is, of course, pressure but he is not an egotistical player (like Nani) and will be willing to graft for the team. I love his playing style and athleticism and really think he has something to offer United – let’s hope he can have an impact on the Champions League stage as well.
