“I’ve been a United fan all my life and fulfilled every dream I’ve ever had”

Gary Neville has announced today that he is retiring from football with immediate effect.

“I have been a Manchester United fan all my life and fulfilled every dream I’ve ever had,” he said. “Obviously I am disappointed that my playing days are at an end, however it comes to us all, and it’s knowing when that time is and for me that time is now. I have played in the most incredible football teams, playing with some of the best players in the world as well as against them and I have been lucky to have been part of the team’s achievements and the club’s great success. There are so many people I want to thank and, of course, top of that list is Sir Alex. He has given me so many opportunities and countless support over the last 20 years – he is truly one of the greatest managers – and I have to thank him for that. There have also been so many great players that I have had the privilege to train and play alongside. The experiences we’ve shared will be with me for the rest of my life. Also, I’d like to thank all the coaches I have played under from youth level right through to now, who have guided me through my playing days. And finally, the fans, who have always shown me unbelievable support. They know how special they are to me and this club. I am looking forward to new experiences and the club will always be a part of my life going forward. However, the most important thing now is for the club to continue with the success that is synonymous with Manchester United and I will be supporting them all the way, as a fan.”

Surely he has to be there at the end of the season lifting number 19?

  8. Vidic Is Titanium says:

what a great player he was. remember him linking with beckham up and down that right wing?
or taking over the reins as the leader after keane?
or taking jose antonio reyes to the cleaners?

    Solid.

  14. willierednut says:

I’d been expecting this, maybe in the summer, but not a huge surprise. I’ll stick my neck out and say, he was under rated, especially, by other fans, but a top red IMO. So, the process has started. Red Nev, then Edwin in the summer, who’s next, the ginger prince?

  15. smartalex says:

  32. The Shankill Skinhead says:

Sad news. Fantastic player with United in his blood. Will be missed. Legend.

  33. Dec the red says:

And so the demise of the class of ’92 begins, it was time for him to go though. You’ll be missed Nev, i wish everyone shared your hatred for the scousers.

  34. Dicko says:

Great timing GNev – certainly better than most of your tackles of late ;-)

Joking aside – thank you! A loyal servant of the club who worked hard to make the best of his talents. Looking forward to seeing you work at the club in some other capacity.

  35. the scottish wonder says:

@Saad well Vida is our captain.. this is something a fan should know hehe

Gary Neville has been just amazing for the club

    truly a legend

  36. R3D says:

    RedNev = United

  37. Jeet says:

WOW – dont know what to say. Tear in my eye. One of the very best and a living example of what it means to be a Red. Hammering the scouse in their backyard would be the most apprpriate farewell gift .

  38. Gopher Brown says:

I don’t know the ins and outs, but couldn’t he have waited until the end of the season. I mean, I presume he’s still counted as one of the 25 man squad, and we’ve had to let Diouf out on loan to free up squad space. Although he probably wouldn’t have played, if we have another defensive crisis like last year, I’d rather have Nev at centre-back than Michael Carrick.

  39. manchesterism says:

i feel sick already. just wait until scholes ang giggs both retires. man, i hate this feeling.

  40. Mikael says:

A true great… will miss his passion for the club, he’s a dying breed.

    Be well RedNev!

  41. bigphil2003 says:

Saddening news but fair play to RedNev as it was the right time and it takes guts to admit that. Wouldnt have minded seeing him get one more goal for us though! As passe said, surely he will be there in May if we clinch number 19.

  42. red_october says:

This made me shed tears. We all knew it was coming soon. Gary Neville is a true RED.

    Forever United.

  43. Dave Malaysia says:

Legend, thank you for everything,God bless you and your family, good luck.

    Love and respect.

Coach at United or if u go to skysports ,hammer the abus for us.most of the regulars here will call up and say something.

Lastly, it shows how the networks perceive him, sky have a pic of him looking down.

Why not something neutral or better.

  44. obertanthenewstar says:

    LEGEND!! WILL BE MISSED

  45. MG says:

    Lost for words : (

  46. King Eric says:

A sad day for United. The first of the three legends to call it a day. Fergie will phase the 3 out seperately I reckon. This season Gaz, next perhaps and hopefully another season for Scholes followed by Ryan in 2020!

Well done Gary lad. A proper United player and a fucking good right back. He will be at United for years to come. Cheers for the last 15 years plus Gaz.

  47. Balaji Sivaraman says:

BTW, it will be awesome if he goes to Sky Sports. Will show those set of fuckers what discipline (in terms of actual life of course) and show them what it means to be an ex-Manchester United player. Currently, there is an over-population of ABU cunts, rent boys and scouse bastards on that roster. But if Neville does go there (unlikely though as it seems), they are in for a rude awakening.

  48. manutdisadream says:

fuck sake nev. i love you, your passion on the field, your winner mentality. im in tears now, sorrow has struck united. however, its not only that, this is truely an eyeopener that the LEGENDS that is scholes and giggs will hang up their boots too, scholes maybe do it sooner then later. giggs will take another year, but it is realy scary, the class of 92 is coming to its end.

Gary Neville is a red is a red……

    HE HATES SCOUSERS!!!!!!!

  49. bchilds says:

Very sad news, inevitable but still sad. Only Giggs and Scholes left now that were at United when I started supporting them as a kid.

  50. Dr. Mico says:

Y didn’t he wait for the end of the season??? Still he’s a true legend!

  51. King Eric says:

Also thanks alot for proper winding the Scousers and Citeh up Gary son.

  52. King Eric says:

Sorry for multiple posts but I bet Talkshite when announcing this will be mocking him, calling him over rated and all that shite. They truly don’t know their arse from their elbow.

  53. Robert S says:

A legend who lived the dream!!!

Hopefully we’ll keep him at the club. Nobody else is better suited to show the youth team players that hard work will eventually pay off …

    Thanks Gary!!!!

  54. King Eric says:

Yeah reckon he will team up with Warren Joyce for the reserve job. This bloke has the passion, desire, drive and mentality to really make his mark as a manager. Who knows 5 years down the line he may be taking over Sir Alex!!

  55. loughie21 says:

Wow, with the way it was talked about last week and now this sudden retirement mid season, maybe he is off to Sky Sports! As long as he comes back as a coach in a few years, we could always use that passion!

  56. C.Hughesmufc says:

Thanks for everything gary true red legend. . . The mufc bush to annoy the neighbours pure class. . . . Forever red forever hates scousers gone but not forgoting. .. . New reserve team coach now lads

  57. ayla says:

He is an example of what most players are getting wrong today…….You Have to love your club during ups and downs…………………GAV…….a LEGEND

  58. mattos000 says:

shattered. always love gnev. he fucken loved united and it loved him back. thanks for everthing mate.

i hope he joins the coaching ranks.

  59. willierednut says:

I heard he turned Sky down? My guess is, he’ll work with the reserves. It’s important, that when the manager leaves, we still have the core of United at the club, with Giggs and RedNev.

  60. shabadu84 says:

Classy finish to an undeniably memorable career for a true one-off. Look forward to seeing what he does next. Cheers for everything…

  61. FletchTHEMAN says:

    Legend

  62. FletchTHEMAN says:

    No questions

  63. manchesterism says:

guys, will he get a medal if we do win our 19th ? really want him to lift that trophy too.

  64. roadkill4u says:

A true team player who always played with passion and wore his heart on his sleeve. He will be missed as all United legends are missed.

On a brighter note, SAF has made sure that coverage was brought in at the right time and the DaSilva’s and others have had time to get into the squad and get acclimated. No knee jerk reactions here like the Scousers and Rent Boys!

    United > Everyone

  65. FletchTHEMAN says:

  66. NorwichRed says:

Gary was an awesome player in his prime. Him and Becks ruled the right side both for us and england. His heart will never be questioned and if you cut him he will bleed red devils!

He has left the pitch at the right time but I hope he carries on in the dressing room as he always has done. Its people like this that cement a team together into a band of brothers that will fight for each other which is important in this age of renegades.

Nice one Nev. Put your feet up and enjoy life!

  67. manchesterism says:

i am actually crying right now. fucking sad.

  68. codezero says:

The best English right back ever. Good luck matey – thanks for the memories.

  69. us says:

couldn’t he have stuck around and made an appearance in the fa cup home tie in order to get a proper send off from the old trafford faithful?

  70. Red Ben says:

This has really hit home that nothing in the game last forever.

    All the best Gary!

  72. MUFCMANC says:

Obviously gutted, Im 18 and every season ive ever known United Gary Neville has been in the team, gutted to see his time has come to an end,he’s a born and bred red and there wont be many like him again. probably the right choice for him to retire now with Rafael and Brown in his place, wish him all the best with whatever he goes on to do.

GARY NEVILLE IS A RED HE HATES SCOUSERS!

Great guy and I wish him all the best. Thanks for years of service.

  76. RojoDiablo says:

Good on ya Gary. True Red Devil…for life

  77. StatesideAussie says:

Great player, not in skills and achievement but in attitude too. The timing seems odd. I am not totally surprised he’s retiring, but thought he would wait until the end of the season. Seems odd to retire only a day or two after the window closed for us to change our 25-man squad, but then again, I don’t think we have any other senior players to put in there anyway.

  78. reddevil2823 says:

gary neville is a true united legend…he has done so much for the club and i wish him all the best in the future(hopefully as a coach/consultant for the team)

  79. MrKirie says:

    Thank you Neville!

  82. rubito says:

The epitomy of what Manchester United are all about. A lesson to the youngsters and hence should be retained at the club as a coach.
Thanks, Gary, for every ounce you have given to Manchester United.
    We are grateful.

    COME ON YOU MIGHTY REDS

    LUHG

  83. Rob(son) says:

Class to the end. Follow that.

  84. 90+Until We Score says:

Fkin gutted……I had booze over this after about 10 years….will miss you Nev..my Hero

  85. Karandravs says:

Even though I knew that was on the cards, but somehow it really pinches me never to see GNev in the dugout .. A true United legend .. First Ole, then Vds, now GNev .. Start of the end of a special era at United .. God knows how gutted I will be when Giggsy and Scholes put their feet up …

  86. Drew Vader says:

    Thanks for the effort Gary

  87. willierednut says:

Lou Maccari on Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, there are dying breed, we’ll never see there likes again. I concur 100%. Legends

  88. United1990 says:

LEGEND and will always be a big part of our club

  89. thisistheone says:

I fucking love gary neville, utd through and through, he would of died for us on the pitch, my best gary neville moment was when he ran up to the scouse bastards and kissed the badge while all the players celebrated rio’s last minute winner, what a guy, took a fine but he didnt care, also can you name me a better right back in the last 15 years? young rafael is going to be just as good though if he stays with us for the next 10 years so we are in good hands with the fantastic brazilian :)

  90. Sir Ryan Giggs says:

Legend. G. Nev will be sorely missed. United thru and thru. Thanks for the memories, the fondest one being you kissing our badge infront of them scouse cunts. I am really sad to see you go but best of luck in your future. Hopefully G.Nev will be still play a part in the club.

  91. Sir Ryan Giggs says:

G.Nev is a TRUE RED. WE LOVE YOU.

  92. Mannings says:

Although Gary Neville’s performances weren’t his best this season, I’m still sad to see him go. Gary Neville is United to the core, he is like having a fan on the pitch.

At his best he was solid in defence, but a demon going forward with his legendary overlapping runs and the only man who could cross better than him was his right hand partner, Beckham.

Everyone will remember him for his public dislike for scousers, most notably shown after Rio’s late winner against the scum!

    Gary Neville. Red Legend!

  93. Utdforever says:

Miss him already… that’s pretty sad news. Why wouldn’t he wait till the end of the season? Well, good luck Gary, you will be missed! Cheers for so many good memories pal. Hopefully one day you’ll be in the hot-seat leading us to more years of glory!!

  94. The United Way says:

Gary Neville you are a legend.

His talent and ability is underlined by his appearance record for United and England.

In his peak he was nailed on starting XI and one of the best in the business.

    What a legend.

  95. redroy says:

My first born is named Ryan. My second born is named Gary. No prizes for guessing whom they are named after. It is a shame that you have to retire now moreso because many people might only remain with the memories of your erratic performances towards the end. But enjoy the retirement. You will be remembered as the one and only GNEV.

  96. gus says:

Gary. A wizard, a true star.

  97. Manchuchu says:

    Best rightback for two decades.

    Thanks Nev.

  98. keano86 says:

    FUCKING LEGEND

  99. Saad says:

    @the Scottish wonder

Vida is our on-field captain. Up until his retirement, GNev was still the official club captain. That is why I raised the question.

Don’t know how others feel about it but I personally think the club captain of Manchester United should be someone from Great Britain or Ireland.

  100. scan74 says:

Fantastic player for us all the best Red Nev

  103. Balaji says:

Thank you Gary Neville…..You will forever remain in our hearts! Now sit with us and watch us win the 19th! Legend!

  104. SteveG says:

i heard hes going to be a TV pundit

good luck in your retirement, if you dont end up coaching the youth or something

  105. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

Love you GNev, he’s exactly what epitomizes a true red. When we lift 19th, i honestly hope he’ll be there, he should right? He still played a part this season. Damn, i feel sad. With VDS and GNev. Its what Scholesy always says i guess, when you find that you don’t have much to offer it’s time to go. And that was probably the case with Nev. Top lad, massive guy. And boy, i won’t forget THAT kiss. Haha.

If he’s going to SkySports- rejoice cos YES! there’s finally going to be an NBU on TV!

  106. Lovely.United says:

I got teary when I heard the news like 1hr ago. Been @ beach all day.

What a shame. What a legend, he was the people’s leader. A true Mancunian.
He will be missed, his passion, his love for the club & his will to stand up for the club.

    Never will be forgotten Gaz.

Thanks for the memories & the passionate celebrations against the dippers + Scousers.

  108. Sir Ryan Giggs says:

    He hates scousers.
Hopefully we could sing his song atleast 10- 20 times this weekend. Fuckin gutted.

  109. catotraa says:

A true legend. Too often players are all about money, as proven in the last week. That is why Neville is so special, he is United through and through, and never dreamt of ending up anywhere else than here.

Celebrations shows that, I’ll never forget him showing the argie troll the finger, or passionately kissing Scholes. Gary Neville is a red, yesterday, today, and forever more!

  110. anderson08 says:

You will be missed, hopefully we will see you on Stretford End with our fans booing opposition and singing our songs, Gary Neville, you are true United LEGEND!

  113. Ellinor says:

You’re truly a legend! We will miss you so much . I appreciate everything you have done for the club.

    NEVER FORGOTTEN

  114. jay says:
