Phil Jones played at right-back for England at the weekend against Ireland, having previously playing in the centre of defence and midfield for his country.

Paul Scholes said that Jones wasn’t clever enough to play in the centre, but Jones has claimed he’s not bothered what other people say about him.

I’ve played in all three positions now and sometimes it can be difficult going from one position to the next but I feel more comfortable at right-back than midfield, although centre-back is where I really want to play. I read after the Italy game that I was no Pirlo – but then I could have told you that before the game started! You can laugh about it now. But I try to do the job the best I can. I know I’m not an out-and-out midfielder who is going to get on the ball and start spraying it about. I know what I am good at and I try to stick with that. I just take it on the chin and play where I am asked to play. I know I can play in those positions. Some people think it is easy to slot in there and you should be up to speed straight away but I was just happy to play. People comment all the time about individuals and long gone are the days when I used to take notice of what people are saying and react to it. It doesn’t bother me one bit.
