Wayne Rooney’s teammates have been singing his praises over recent weeks, particularly following the inspirational speech he gave to them ahead of the fantastic display against Spurs a few weeks ago.

Phil Jones has joined in with claim Rooney is a fantastic captain, pointing to his talk ahead of the victory over Villa.

Wayne’s a leader and everybody follows him. He leads by example and doesn’t just say things [to the other players in the dressing room] for the sake of it, it really means something. He made a comment before the game saying it’s no good beating Liverpool if you can’t beat Aston Villa at Old Trafford and he was bang on. Thankfully we’ve done that.

Rooney scored a fantastic goal to put United 2-0 up yesterday but Jones is more impressed with the first touch he took to control the ball.

I think the touch was actually better than the strike. He plucked it out of the air with his weaker foot, swivelled on the half-volley and smacked it into the top corner. I’m delighted for him, he does that week in, week out.
