Phil Jones put in a good performance at right back in United’s 1-0 win over Everton today. The young defender claims that getting the win shows the character of the club after last weekend’s horrible result.
“Everyone showed today what Manchester United are about,” Jones told MUTV. “It was a bad day at the office last week but we’ve shown fantastic team spirit in training, got our heads up and picked ourselves up quickly. This is a massive win for us today and we’re delighted in the changing room. It was tough and we expected it from Everton because of previous years of coming here. It was mad [at the end] and we had to defend it but we did that and, thankfully, got the three points. It’s very nice as a defender [to get a clean sheet]. Defensively as a unit, I thought 11 players defended and not just four. 11 players defended terrifically well. They were throwing the kitchen sink at us today and I thought we stood strong as a unit and held together.”

future captain!!!!
Feeling quite happy out here as well
Vidic did a great, captains job today.
1-0 win over Everton… I still haven’t come down yet. What a day!
Everton had a platry 82.1% passing succes rate compared to our 82.3%
I’d eight two (point three) be an Everton fan right now!
paltry
Am i the only one dismayed at the sight of United hanging on to dear life at Everton for the whole of 2nd half as if we are up against the likes of Barcelona??
hanging on for dear life*
Sort of, but the three points and the clean sheet were the most important things today.
This reminds me of a 2-1 win we had over Chelsea the week after we’d lost 6-3 to Southampton, and 5-0 to Newcastle the week previous. I seem to recall that we were hanging on at the end of that one too, and there was a tangible feeling of relief at the final whistle. It was just a psychological thing; we had to get a win under our belts to exorcise the demons of the previous two weeks.
Besides, Everton at Goodison is always a tough fixture, so a 1-0 win there is a good result any day.
After last week’s hidding, I will be ok to hang on dear life and three points; we can build on that….was today VDS birthday because Tiny Tears slipped again
Put your hands up if you’re a scouse buster!
well it’s been long since we win at the Goodison Park, in 2007. so, a 1-0 win is a great thing. after our heavy lost last week, this is a great result. another 3 points for us. keeping pressure with our noisy neighbour which looks like going to lose their great form soon
yes, we got 3 points but it does not mean that the job is done! Some changes are required…. urgently…our mid-field is still not up to the standard of those days when we had Roy Keane and Paul Scholes…every top team has world class playmker except from us….we just cannot reply upon the like of Fletcher and Andersen….whether Cleverley and Pogba are the special ones for us remain to be seen … maybe in future…but we really can’t wait….
@lununcle
Totally agree with the MF situation. I was on ths Sneijder bandwagon because of this reason. Cleverly WILL be our CMF in years to come and now but when he is injured or rested there needs to be more quality.
Yes our midfield is our weak spot anderson is a gr8 sub not more that that we need world class players in the middle we cant compete with this midfield atleast one or two midfielders not more cleverly is the future but it the end for carrick and fletcher.. It would be nice to hv and expiernced mdf and a young one like cleverly… Plus ppl who agress that evans doesnt belong in our team he sucks like shit he’s a bad player?!
win against everton was a big boost.
@lununcle @robbo @rehimi
All bollocks, the lot of yer.
Sneijder would solve nothing. Fletcher is coming back to his best, slowly but surely. If he stays fit between now and the rest of the season let’s get to May and i’ll let you tell me I if i’m wrong, yeah?
Carrick is a far better and more important player than most people on here will give him credit for. Just because he isn’t dancing around players like Messi does, or knocking through them like Keano used to, doesn’t mean he is ineffective. If you watch him play for 90 you’ll understand how the things he does (and doesn’t do) benefit the rest of the team.
Anderson, the jury is still out I guess but you can’t deny how glorious is partnership with Cleverley was in the beginning of the season.
I hope Rooney plays more of this deeper role because I truly believe it suits him, he’s involved in the game all the time, everything goes through him, he doesn’t get marked out, he doesn’t get isolated, in the absence of our Ginger Prince, it’s the future.
Ji Sung Park has nothing to prove for me either. Again, he’s another player who benefits from what TC brings to the table.
Sir Giggs will still have some important cameos to play yet this season, don’t dare underestimate his importance to this side because of his advancing years.
That’s 7 central midfielders. I already feel like there’s just a little too much rotating going on, that for that very reason we haven’t quite got comfortable. Players like Carrick and Fletcher need a run games to dust off their A-game, it’s still there and it will happen this season, for one or the other.
Fuck Sneijder, we don’t need him, the players we have are good enough and want it more than money.
Evans is a fantastic defender going through a tough spell. Again, maybe you have forgotten the qualities he brought with him before he ‘sucked like shit’.
Maybe you might want to fire up that other brain cell before you start calling players who have been here, done it and got the medals to prove it.
great post @Fibes
Fibes gives a good balance to the ongoing discussion surrounding our midfield, and the players mentioned do indeed deserve our backing as they have delivered us trophies in recent years and are better than most midfielders in the league.
However, the point I think most people are trying to make is: are fletcher, carrick, Anderson Et al good enough to beat the best? And by the best I mean Barcelona. I think not.
Are they even better than the midfielders of our closest rivals, man city? I believe they are better than the likes of Gareth Barry, James Milner, Walcott, ramires, Lucas etc over the course of the season. But they aren’t the special goals scoring or goal creating midfielder we need from that central position.
That is the point fibes, are they good enough to beat Barcelona? The European cup remains a top priority for a club like ours, and it is the catalonians who stand in our way…
Trouble is –Evans’s “tough spells” last ten times longer than his good ones. Hope SAF persists with Rooney in MF and leaves Welbeck and Chica up front.
I dont know why people think it is a taboo to criticise our players. If a player is shit, just call it as it is. For example, Evans sucks big time. And our midfield, forget barcelona, they can’t beat City if we met in a final. We are the fucking manchester united, we deserve better technical players.
